D. C. Ralston (U. S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—Flake mica can be beneficiated by a wider variety of methods than almost any known mineral. However, most of these methods are not recorded. It is therefore a pleasure to find a written record of another application of a new method of beneficiation. The fact that the Humphries spiral gives a concentrate containing the mica flake mixed with the slime and small grit has forced a further separation by screening, in which the finest of the flake will pass through. Fine flake has its uses and if mixed with slimes or clay is recoverable reliably only by flotation. This loss must be charged against the spiral. On the other hand, the new muscovite mica paper recently brought out by General Electric Co., can be made only with grit free flake larger than 50 mesh. It is of interest to learn from the authors whether the washing of the flake on a 50 mesh screen can take the grit content below 1 pct, to meet this new demand. Must another degritting process be used on the flake, like electrostatic treatment of the dried material? H. D. Snedden (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—When recovering mica in the spiral, gangue particles coarser than 16 mesh can be rejected more readily when operating at a high pulp density (35 pct solids) or a low volume rate (—15 gpm). A launder screen as used by Lehigh Coal Co. has proved very satisfactory to partially dewater the mica concentrate and to reject any gangue slimes it may contain. Under certain conditions mica cleaning in the spiral can be improved by reagentizing the spiral feed, the object being to insure wetting of the gangue minerals and to agglomerate or prevent wetting of the mica particles. R. B. Adair (authors' reply)—The grit content of the mica recovered on Humphreys Spirals varies with the fineness of the launder screen used to clean the mica product. Normal practice has been the use of 80 mesh screen, which will produce a mica product of acceptable grit content for most purposes. By using a 50 mesh screen, and increasing the screen area per ton of feed, it is felt by the authors that a mica of 99 pct plus purity could be obtained. This statement would hold only in the case of mica feed which was well de-laminated, and free from "clay balls," (semikaclinized feldspar), which tends to follow the mica through the process.

The methods of mining talc are simple, and in western North Carolina are almost entirely by open cut and quarry. The larger part of the talc of this section lies in various-sized "veins''. inclosed in quartzitic walls, the majority of which have by folding been thrown into a perpendicular position, or nearly so, and the exposed edges of which have been covered by debris from erosion of the mountain above. This covering of loose rocks and earth is from 5 to 25 ft. thick, and in most cases has to be removed because it is difficult to support. Sometimes the covering is heavy enough to "catch" and timber successfully, and in this case the talc can be worked out by the usual method of following the "vein," using stulls for holding up the walk until the vein is worked out, and then allowing the cut or drift to fall in. In some cases it proves more convenient to sink shafts and run drifts, following the talc "veins" until exhausted. The talc deposits of this section are badly broken and faulted both laterally and perpendicularly, and in some cases are found many feet below the level of drainage, necessitating pumping at considerable expense. My own experience in mining talc has been that the chief point is to get a reliable "vein," and that then the mining is not as difficult, or any more so at least, than that of any common ore. If the "veins" are pure talc it is simple; if the talc is admixed with foreign matter, such as tre-molite in excess, or stains of iron or manganese, as is often the case, one had better abandon the deposit. Methods of Manufacture Talc, being a soft mineral, is not difficult to reduce to the condition desired by the trade. Powdered talc is admitted under low duty from France, Italy and Austria, and some is being imported from Asiatic points. Talc is usually ground and bolted in any simple reduction mill. That mined in this section is hand-sorted and the quality that will make good powdered talc is ground for use in the manufacture of talcum powder, cosmetics, etc., while all that is hard enough and has sufficient strength is used for crayons and blanks for gas burners and electrical work, being sawed into the shapes desired. RESIDENTS of many urban centers are becoming increasingly aware of the obscuring effect of fume and smoke discharge from power, metallurgical, chemical, and other industries; and they, as well as the legislatures of these affected cities, are agitating for cleaner air. Management's most pressing problem is to find an economical way to reduce process effluents in response to the growing pressure from population and legislative demands. The removal must be done, if possible, without handicap to the current operation, since the costs of relocating are often excessive or prohibitive. In fume recovery or disposal, an important item to consider is whether or not the material being discharged has any value. If it has commercial value, the cost of its recovery may offset or aid amortization. For this reason, in making a study of the specific problem in hand, a major factor was the nature of the material emanating from the stack: in particular, its particle size, size range, and its chemical and physical composition, as well as its potential value and utility when recovered (in either a wet or dry state). Should the product have no commercial value, it must be disposed of at minimum cost in a way to prevent recontamination. Initial studies were therefore made to determine stack concentrations and volumes of material evolved from the operations. The next phase of the study concerned the physical and chemical nature of the collected fume. The third portion of this paper describes the wet and dry collector studies undertaken to recover the fume. Cleaning Requirements for Ferroalloy Furnace Operation The basic need for any effluent collection equipment is the highest possible efficiency and the lowest tolerable resistance when the power consumption involved is considered. Since the electric furnace effluent is largely composed of fume of small size (less than 0.5u), it has high light obscuring properties, and even low concentrations will cause some loss of visibility and be evident to nearby residents. The permissible limit for fly ash emission in many cities is based on a weight value (viz, approximately 0.4 grains per cu ft), but the smoke density values are dependent upon a shade of color. In the case of the Los Angeles County code, emission is restricted to pounds per pound of material processed per hour basis (but not exceeding 40 lb per hr for any one given plant operation). If an average particle size of the fume from ferro-silicon alloy electric furnaces is assumed to be 0.4u (as shown later, this is the approximate mean size) and an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft (stp), each cubic foot of stack gas will contain approximately 75x10 10 particles (based on assumed, and confirmed, spherical shape and a standard deviation of unity). When it is realized that the air in metropolitan areas, which are also general industrial areas, contains approximately 5x108 particles, the tremendous light scattering effect of this concentration becomes apparent. Consequently, nearly 100 pct collection would be necessary to equal the average concentration. Fortunately, however, discharge from a high point above ground (50 to 100 ft) will result in at least a thousandfold dilution, or the stack concentration reaching the ground in the foregoing case might result in a ground concentration of ' particles. If the concentration at the source could be reduced by a factor of 100 (99 pct efficiency of collection), then a concentration of 75x10" particles would be diluted to 7.5x10' which would be very satisfactory. An efficiency of 90 pct (factor of 10 decontamination) at the source would result in a discharge of 75x109 articles which upon dilution yields 75x10 which is still 15 times the general air value. Another approach to this consideration is to use the value of concentration of 0.005 grains per cu ft for the value of a visible effluent as cited by Kayse.1 To attain this value with an average loading of 1 grain per cu ft would require an efficiency of 99.5 pct. Since the foregoing value is not based on any reported size of fume particles, it is felt that the numbers' approach given previously is more reliable. These calculations serve to indicate the desirability of thorough cleaning, preferably at the source, and with efficiencies well above 90 pct, preferably above 95 pct (dilution 1:20). One of the most important items in any control program is to reduce the concentrations as close to their sources as possible. The use of better furnace design, deeper coverage over the electrodes, and the prevention of blows or breaks in the surface all help to reduce dissemination; consequently, all of these improvements should be made, if possible, to cut down the effluent load. In addition, in order to minimize the volume of contaminated air that has to be cleaned, the furnace should be enclosed as much as possible. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Miller's improved method of the cyanide-assay for copper will, without doubt, be much appreciated by assayers and chemists who are engaged at copper mines and works. The writer, as one who, at one time, had much work of that kind to do, entertains no doubt of its practical value. In enumerating the factors which affect the accuracy of cyanide-titration, Mr. Miller omits to mention time. This I have always considered an essential one; i.e., in order to secure accuracy, I have believed it to be necessary to run the cyanidesolution at the same rate of speed in standardizing as in the titration of the samples. I have accomplished this, without the use of a time-keeper and without noticing the volume of the solution, in the following simple manner: In running the cyanide-solution from the burette, the stream was so regulated, by manipulation of the cock, that it retained its continuity for a distance of about one inch below the orifice, and, below that, broke into individual drops. This means that a constant pressure is maintained at the orifice of the burette, so that, during equal intervals of time, equal volumes of the solution pass through. The stream of cyanide-solution was left to flow in the manner indicated until the blue ammoniacal copper-solution began to show a distinct change in color, after which the cyanide was added by drops at regular intervals until the desired end-reaction. When several burettes are used they should have orifices of equal diameter; otherwise, the timefactor must be considered separately for each. In accordance with Mr. Miller's views, I have always considered the cyanide-method as of very satisfactory accuracy for all copper-assaying in which I did not employ the electrolytic method. It is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling muds to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2-3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable extent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the ['tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata. Quantitative relations of filter-cake permeability, filtrate viscosity, and rate of filtration have been developed for filtration in the simple laboratory filter.4a,11,12,13 It is obvious, however, that the conditions

mountain region to M tht Coast points for domestic consumption and for export are shown in Table 11. There is considerable disparity in rates from both Rock Springs, Wyo., and Castle Gate, Utah, to the four coast cities where the slack coal is to be used for purposes other than export. The rate on coal to be exported is the same from either starting point to any of the four coast cities even though there is a difference of as much as 341 miles in the shipping distance. It is interesting to note that the freight rate between Sunnyside, Utah, and Fontana, Calif., on coking coal is $5.05 per ton and that coal up to 8 in. can be moved on this rate if it is suitable for coking. This rate was published late in 1942 on a contemplated annual movement of more than 500,000 tons. There have been decreases in freight rates since 1923 on movements of slack coal from Utah into Seattle and Portland due to pressure on the railroads and to greater. quantity of coal shipped. It is the author,', opinion that a movement of slack coal in excess of 3 million tons of coal per year from Utah to any point in central California would justify a freight rate equal to that puhlished for Fontana, Calif.. or $5.05 per ton. The movement of 3 1/2 million tons of coal per year on the basis of 240 mine working days per year would require that 14,600 tons be handled each mine working day. If it is assumed that shipments could be arranged for a 6-day week, the average railway movement would he 11,200 tons, or approximately 3 trains containing fifty-five 70-ton coal cars per day. Such movements of coal would require railroad equipment represented by the investment amounts stated in Table 12 and entail the services of 250 men. Table 12 ... It also appears that the lowest freight rate that could be expecled between intermountain points and the central California area would be $5.05 per ton, making a total cost of coal delivered at a plant site of $9.65 per ton. Conelusions The following are the author's conclusions: 1. Coal mines in Utah and in the Kemmerer and Rock Springs districts of Wyoming could increase annual production by 6 1/2 million tons per year. 2. Under present conditions coal could probably be delivered to any steam electric plant in central California at a price not to exceed $9.65 per ton. 3. The use of coal at such a price, while higher than the equivalent present price of fuel oil, is entirely feasible. 4. There are adequate railroad facilities for movements of large quantities of coal from the intermountain region to the Rest Coast. 5. In a national emergency it probably would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to obtain sufficient oil to meet requirements of the greatly expanded West Coast steam electric generatsing capacity. 6. The intermountain region contains ample coal reserves to supply all conceivable demands for West Coast power generation for a number of generations. 7. Increasing demands of labor threaten to lessen, if not eliminate, savings in cost of coal production through the use of new mining machinery. 8. Continuation of experiments in socialism by the Federal Government through construction of hydroelectric generating plants, particularly those unrelated to land-use reclamation, defies justification. Rates under this concept of a governmental function are subsidized through greater taxation of its people. Private capital is available to construct steam plants, or hydro plants where feasible, and should be permitted to continue in order to preserve the principles of our free enterprise system. DISCUSSION (L. C. McCabe and Robert P. Koenig, presiding) C. C;. BALl*—I was asked to lead off the discussion, but it is not with the thought that I might be able to add anything to the paper. The thoroughness with which it was prepared rather forestalls the asking of many questions. Your treatment, Mr. Heiner, is a very valuable contribution. I do want to suggest—that although you have limited your study to this specific question, with certain geographic limitations, many of the things in your paper apply just as well to the eastern coals. I want to agree 100 pct with your final conclusion concerning government-subsidized construction. Id. C. McCabe*—It is certainly worthwhile to take stock occasionally to see where we are going in problems of this nature. I agree with Mr. Heiner that ultimately the only reliable source of fuel that the West Coast has is coal hut the time factor is the difficult element to evaluate. Just before I came here I discussed this subject with N. B. Hinson, Vice President and Executixe Engineer of the Southern California Edison Company, and Chairman of the West Coast Inter-Power Exchange Committee. He has given much thought to utilities' fuel supply and it was very helpful to me in preparing a discussion of the paper to talk with him beforehand. Stock taking and forecasting of future development are essential to the continuing success of any enterprise. Mr. Heiner has called attention to the unprecedented growth of central and southern California and to the increased demands for fuel and power which have accompanied it. He discusses the increased fuel oil and natural gas requirements and the probable limits on the future use of these fuels and of hydroelectric power. In contrast to the calculable limits of these sources of electric energy, the author points to the availability of enormous reserves of coal in the Rocky Mountain States adjacent to the Pacific Coast which can be utilized for power generation. That there will be increased use of coal for power generation in the area under discussion is generally accepted hut it is in the timetable of such development that there is not complete agreement. In a recent report, Mr. Hinson reviewed the future power outlook for the Pacific southwest area. He pointed out that the use of steam plants in connection with water power plants in this region has made the maximum use of hydroelectric energy possible, and that the correct balance between hydro and steam generating plants produces the most economical overall system. The rates of solution (of hydrogen in liquid pure iron and in several liquid binary iron alloys were meas-ured using a constant volume technique. The rates of absorption and desorption were found to be equal un-der all experimental conditions. increasing concen-trations of S, Si, or Te decrease the rate of hydrogen uptake but additions of Al, B, Cr, Cu, or Ni have no measurable effect up to concentrations normally en-countered in steelmaking practice. No relation ship was found between the effect of an alloying element on the equilibrium solubility of hydrogen in liquid iron and its effect on the solution rate constant. Mathe-rnatical analysis of the data indicates that under the present experimental conditions the rate of reaction of hydrogen with liquid iron is controlled by transport of gas solute atoms in the metal phase. Comparison of the present resuts with data on nitrogen taken un der similar conditions establishes that the hydrody-nurnic conditions which exist near the surface of a metal bath are best approximated mathematically by a surface renewal model for the case of rapid in-ductive stirring and by a boundary layer model for more quiescent melts. HYDROGEN has long been recognized as being a detrimental constituent in steel. If dissolved in the molten metal in excess of its solid solubility, hydro-gen can be evolved during solidification and cause bleeding or porosity in ingots and castings. In the solid metal, lesser amounts play a definite role in causing other defects such as hairline cracks, blisters, and embrittlement. For significant refinements to be made in metallurgical procedures designed to control or eliminate hydrogen from liquid iron or steel dur-ing processing, available equilibrium solubility data must be supplemented with reliable fundamental in-formation pertaining to the kinetic factors involved in the transfer of hydrogen to or from the metal. The scarcity of such information in the literature prompted the present investigation. PREVIOUS RESEARCH Whereas much of the existing data on the solution kinetics of gases such as nitrogen were obtained during the course of thermodynamic investigations, the solu-tion rate of hydrogen has been found too rapid to be accurately determined by conventional solubility meas-urement techniques. Consequently, little work on hy-drogen solution kinetics has been reported in the lit-erature. Carney, Chipman, and crant1 attempted to study the rate of solution and evolution of hydrogen from liquid iron by employing a newly devised sampling method. Although no significant quantitative data could be obtained, it was observed that the rate of solution was approximately equal to the rate of evolution of hy-drogen from the melt. Karnaukov and Morozov2 stud-ied the rate of absorption and Knuppel and Oeters3 the rate of desorption of hydrogen from molten iron by measuring pressure changes with time in a constant volume system. Karnaukov and Morozov determined the hydrogen pressures over their inductively stirred melts with the aid of a McLeod gage and therefore, were forced to work at pressures not in excess of 40 mm of Hg. Their experimental data conformed to a mathematical correlation based on diffusion control: and the rate coefficients calculated on this basis were shown to be independent of the initial absorption pres-sure. These authors reported the solution rate of hy-drogen to be eight-to-ten times higher than they had found for nitrogen in a previous study. They also re-ported that under identical conditions, hydrogen dis-solves somewhat more slowly in iron-columbium alloys than in pure iron. Knuppel and Oeters found that the desorption of hydrogen from pure iron at 1600°C was controlled in all cases investigated by diffusion in the metal bath as long as bubble formation was sup-pressed. This was substantiated by Levin, Kurochkin, and umrikhin4 who studied the kinetics of hydrogen evolution from liquid (technical) iron while applying a vacuum. Salter5 measured the rate of hydrogen ab-sorbed by iron buttons, arc-melted by direct current, as a function of hydrogen partial pressure in a hy-drogen-argon atmosphere. A carrier gas technique was used for analysis of the hydrogen absorbed. The initial rate of absorption was found to increase di-rectly with the square root of the partial pressure of hydrogen. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Because of the rapid uptake and evolution of hydro-gen by iron-base melts, a constant volume technique was devised in order to obtain meaningful kinetic data over the entire course of the solution process. Apparatus. A schematic view of the experimental apparatus is given in Fig. 1. The hydrogen-liquid iron reaction system consisted of a gas storage bulb con-nected to a meltcontaining reaction chamber through a normally-closed solenoid valve. The gas storage bulb, an inverted 250 ml round-bottomed Pyrex flask was joined to the inlet port of the solenoid valve by a glass-to-metal seal. A more detailed illustration of the reaction chamber is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the Vycor reaction bulb was essentially that de-scribed by Weinstein and Elliott6 with the exception of a shorter, larger diameter gas inlet for this kinetic study. In position, the reaction bulb was closely by an eight-turn coil of water-cooled copper tubing which, when energized by a 400-kc oscillator, provided the inductive heating source. THE accuracy with which grade and tonnage of a mineral deposit may be calculated from diamond-drill assays is dependent upon: (I) the reliability of core and sludge samples and (2) the validity of methods used in grade and tonnage calculations. Limitations imposed by drilling and sampling preclude elaborate methods of computation. In adjusting core and sludge assays the importance assigned the core and sludge samples may be based on either the respective weights recovered or the respective volumes represented by each. Only when core and sludge recoveries are poor do discrepancies between adjusted assays calculated by these two methods develop, in which case the "weight" method gives emphasis to the core sample and the "volume" method gives emphasis to the sludge sample. When the sludge suffers classification within the drill hole, the weight method gives more accurate results; when the sludge sample suffers no classification, the volume method gives more accurate results. Any drilling campaign offers a compromise between desired accuracy on the one hand and expediency, limited time, money, or facilities on the other. Since the determination of grade and tonnage is an approximation at best, a proper basis for their computation requires a knowledge of the limitations imposed by all phases of work upon which the calculations depend. A rational basis for coordination of these phases of work requires determination of: (I) the degree of accuracy desired, as a function of the object of examination; (2) the degree of accuracy attainable, as a function of the limitations imposed in the drilling and sampling program; and (3) the validity of method to be used in calculating grade and tonnage from core and sludge assays. This paper presents results of a comparison made between two commonly used methods of adjusting core and sludge assays, the assumptions upon which these methods are based, and the interrelationship of the phases of work upon which these calculations are dependent. OBJECT OF EXAMINATION The purpose of prospecting any mineral deposit is to secure sufficient samples from which ore grade and tonnage may be calculated. Any mine examination, preliminary or formal, has a definite purpose, although its scope may be limited or broad. The type of examination to be conducted is dependent, therefore, upon the reason for instituting the investigation; its scope and thoroughness are directly related to economic considerations. WHEN F. Heusler1 found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.3 All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys" the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intelligently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. PREVIOUS WORK In the original work of F. Heusler1 and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for Cu2MnA1 of I = 443 was early measured. Ross and Grays found a second maximum at the composition Cu2MnSn, which was much more magnetic than Heusler's original alloy. F. Heusler6 then reinvestigated the system, confirmed their results,

Discussion of the paper of GRAFTON M. THRASHER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2129 to 2138. RICHARD MOLDENKE, Watchung, N. J.-Mr. Thrasher is to be commended for developing a very interesting comparison between high- and low-carbon and silicon malleable cast irons for an equal degree of chill. His deductions are unquestionably correct, though the application to daily practice is open to serious criticism, from the standpoint of the man who receives the castings, as will be shown later on. Running over some of the points which affect the tests in question: Mr. Thrasher admits that the temperature of pouring has a serious influence on the degree of chill shown in the test plugs he made. This is a well-known fact, and I would like to add that another serious trouble comes from oxidized iron when the heats have been unduly prolonged. Such metal always shows more chilling action for a given silicon and carbon content than normally melted iron. Indeed, the test piece quoted giving the extreme of the chill line (1.07 per cent. Si and 2.47 per cent. total carbon) was such a poor heat, a ferro-silicon addition never "doctoring" up the metal sufficiently to show normal good strength. In spite of these irregularities, which would simply change the curve slightly, I take it that Mr. Thrasher's results can be accepted as reliable enough to establish the relationship of silicon and total carbon as shown. When, however, the claim is made that silicon and carbon can be substituted for each other in mixture-making (a claim which may be perfectly correct metallurgically), a very important factor is forgotten, causing the purchaser of the castings much annoyance. This is the contraction (erroneously called shrinkage) of the castings. They will no longer be true to pattern. The lower the total carbon is allowed to drop, the greater the contraction, and increasing the silicon correspondingly will not correct this trouble. No wonder that recently, in revising the Standard Specifications for Malleable Castings it was necessary to increase the variation of castings from requirements considerably over what was formerly found sufficient. The habit of running up the proportion of silicon and escaping danger from grayness of the metal by copious steel additions was evidently too tempting to manufacturers, as their molding losses were thus kept down and a very soft malleable iron resulted. The customer, however, got serious variations in his work, which was not the case when the total carbon was kept between 3.25 and 2.75, and the silicon held as low as possible without undue cracking of the hard castings.

In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

The simultaneous solution of the volumerric balance and the unsteady-state equation has been used for several years to make performance calculations for combination drive reservoirs. This method makes possible the calculation of volumetric changes of fluids in the gas cap, oil zone, and aquifer which occur as a result of withdrawals and reservoir pressure changes. It does not provide a means for the determination of reservoir fluid distribution changes corresponding to these vollrmetric changes. A knowledge of the fluid saturation distribution in the reservoir at various stages of depletion is important for the determination of the efficiency of gas and water as oil-displacement media and, therefore, for the reliable predicrion of ultimate oil recovery. To provide this knowledge, the displacement equations are solved simultaneously with the volumetric balance and unsteady-state equations. The described calculation procedure has been used satisfactorily to analyze the past performance and to predict the future behavior of combination drive reservoirs under both primary and pressure-maintenance operations. INTRODUCTION The three basic mechanisms by which oil is displaced from a reservoir are: (1) dissolved gas drive—the displacement of oil by the expansion of liberated solution gas, (2) water drive—the displacement of oil by water which enters the oil zone from the aquifer, and (3) gas cap drive—the displacement of oil by gas which ex- pands into the oil zone from the gas cap. The action of gravitational forces may be effective in increasing the efficiency of the basic drive mechanisms. Gravitational forces favor the segregation both of gas and oil and of oil and water, thus tending to shorten the transition zone between oil and displacing fluids. Most reservoirs produce under the influence of a combination of these drives and are designated "combination drive reservoirs". Fig. 1 is a cross section of a typical combination drive reservoir. A calculation procedure for analyzing the performance of combination drive reservoirs has been developed by combining the displacement equations' with the volumetric balance equation' and the unsteady-state equations. The pressure-production performance and the positions of the gas-oil and oil-water contacts are calculated for several stages of reservoir depletion by solving these equations simultaneously, thus affording a basis for: 1. Determining instantaneous and ultimate oil, gas, and water production under various operating conditions. 2. 'Establishing a maximum efficient rate of production, 3. Determining the advantages of pressure maintenance and unitization, and 4. Designing surface installations necessary for primarv and pressure-maintenance operations. SEVERAL techniques have been evaluated for cooling the throat area of rocket-nozzle inserts to prevent erosion or fracture of the inserts during exposure to high operating temperatures and pressures. Self-cooled composites, such as infiltrated tungsten, have shown considerable promise for these applications. These composites can be fabricated by infiltrating the refractory matrix with a lower-melting metal or non-metal which is insoluable in tungsten. During firing, the lower-melting substance undergoes a series of continuous endothermic phase changes which absorb sufficient heat to maintain the nozzle matrix material at or below a safe operating temperature. At present, the state-of-the-art has reached a point where the refractory matrix density and microstruc-ture have been established as the critical parameters to be controlled for optimum self-cooled performance.'" Nondestructive testing has been utilized to ensure that porous tungsten billets were of uniform density and free from cracks or other defects prior to fabrication into rocket nozzle inserts. Ultrasonic-velocity techniques have been employed because of their reliability and reproducibility. The purpose of this note is to present and interpret the test data developed for porous tungsten matrices. For evaluation purposes, tungsten powders with Fisher subsieve sizes of approximately 4 and 18 p have been obtained for study from four commercial sources: the General Electric Co., Wah Chang Corp., Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., and Kennametal, Inc. Porous tungsten matrices were fabricated from the powders by hot pressing in induction-heated graphite die assemblies. Typical billets ranged from 3 in. diam, 2 in, high to 5 in. diam, 5 in. high. The ultrasonic-velocity measurement technique employed was through transmission, pulse echo at a frequency of 1.0 mc using matched barium titanate crystal transducers. The testing equipment included a pulsed ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, a specimen holder, and an oscilloscope, as shown in Fig. 1. The porous tungsten thickness was measured to i 0.0005 in, with precision micrometers while the oscilloscope achieved 0.02 psec time measurement accuracy. The time for a sound wave to pass through the billet, the bulk wave velocity, was calculated to 0.5 pct using Eq. [l]: V-} where V = bulk wave velocity, in. per psec, T = specimen thickness, in., and / = time, psec. To develop inspection standards, the bulk density of a porous tungsten billet was determined by the ASTM water-immersion technique.3 The ultrasonic-velocity measurements were completed at seventeen positions for each billet and averaged to develop a characteristic standard velocity for a particular tungsten powder at several density levels. INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications—those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicatlng and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement Co. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible. The original Houston plant, built in 1937 by Gulf Portland Cement Co., consisted of only one 8 x 220-ft kiln and the necessary grinding mills and accessory equipment and had a capacity of 900 bbl per day (300,000 bbl annually). Ideal Cement Co. purchased this plant in 1940 and almost immediately started plans to increase its production. In 1941 a 9 x 220-ft kiln was installed and grinding and storage capacity were increased. The growing demand for cement in the Houston area necessitated a third kiln (9 ft 6 in. x 250 ft) in 1947. This brought the plant up to its present capacity of about 1.3 million bbl per year. Calcium silicates in cement are produced in a burning operation at high temperatures from raw mix of argillaceous and calcareous materials that have been crushed, mixed, and ground to a fine powder. The composition of this mixture must be kept consistent within narrow limits. Raw mixing and grinding may be done either wet or dry, but in both instances the materials must be correctly proportioned, finely ground, and thoroughly intermixed before entering the kiln. entirely suitable for certain uses and even possess advantages over present solders at high temperatures, but they are certainly not suitable for all uses. However, it is conceivable that their use in many places will effect a material conservation of tin. It will probably be wiser to use cadmium in solders where good results have been obtained than in brass where this element will be a source of possible trouble. F. F. Colcord,* New York, N. Y.-—The cadmium-lead solder has a higher conductivity than the lead-tin alloy, which ought to make it advantageous in the manufacture of electrical machinery. In the case of solder for tin-can work, one of the high officials of the American Can Co. said that he fully intended to .give it a good trial, and I do not believe they are going to reach hasty conclusions and run the risk of poisoning the public. Solder, Its Use and Abuse Milton L. LissbeRgeR,† New York, N. Y.—Solder is a mechanical mixture of tin and lead, a fact which is susceptible of very simple demonstration. A bar of solder of a grade even as low as 30 per cent. tin and 70 per cent. lead, passed through a buffing machine, will show a surface practically identical with that of a bar of second-quality or reclaimed tin. The buffings, on chemical analysis, will prove to be almost pure lead. According to the best practice, solder is made in the following manner. Virgin pig lead is first melted, and when it is thoroughly liquefied, virgin pig tin is added, together with a small amount of flux; the latter is for the purpose of bringing to the surface the so-called "liver," consisting of impurities that may have remained in either the lead or the tin as a result of incomplete refining. The combined material, when completely liquid, is thoroughly stirred for some hours, and is then cast into small pigs. Just before casting, and continuously during this operation, the molten metal yields dross, consisting largely of the oxides of lead and tin; this should be carefully skimmed off. After the pigs have cooled, they are taken to a smaller kettle, re-melted, and cast into the desired shape for use; or if wires, ribbons, etc., are to be made, the solder is cast into slugs suitable for extrusion and rolling. During this second operation, the skimming of dross should be even more carefully done than at first. Hand mixing has proved to be the only reliable method for the production of the best quality of solder, irrespective of its percentages of lead and tin. The best quality of solder is not necessarily that which contains the highest percentage of tin, but rather is that composition which performs best on the required piece of work. In order to produce

• A new curriculum for combined liberal arts-engineering education has been announced by 6 middle western colleges. The plan involves three years of ;study at one of the 5 liberal arts colleges and two years and a summer of 'engineering work at Case; graduates receive both the A.B. and B.S. degrees. * A new kind of mining is being pioneered by a pest Virginia coal operator which enables four men to produce 800 tons of coal a day. The machine that makes this possible is a giant auger, 5 ft in diam and 100 ft long. Together with the carriage in which it is moved about, it weighs 60 tons. A mobile, but separate power plant of 1000 hp drives it. ' * The Sorel smelter, which will reduce Allard Lake titanium ores, will utilize five 6-electrode rectangular electric furnaces. Furnace hearth size will be about 18x50 ft, and the furnace will smelt about 300 tons of ore per day, producing 100 tons of iron and 130 tons of 70 pct Ti02 slag. The furnaces will be fed continuously by gravity from charge bins, and tap at intervals of 4 hr or more. Slag will be transferred to a high speed casting machine, using cast iron molds, then crushed for shipment to pigment producers. The iron will be treated to reduce its sulphur content to 0.03 to 0.05 pct, and then cast into small pigs or ingots for shipment to steel mills. • Flying of North Africa's first airborne mangetometer survey was completed this month, covering approximately 20,000 sq km in north central Tunisia for Gulf Exploration Co.'s program there. Mapping was completed in less than 30 days. •Yore than 9000 employees of 11 electric companies are enrolled in a 6-hr program that successfully informs workers on the principles of the American economic system. The course is given by the Middle West Service Co. which claims that before and after employee opinion polls show that the course instilled a better understanding of free enterprise and consequently a favorable response to it. •According to a report issued by the American Geological Institute there will be 2865 graduates in geology, including advanced degrees from U.S. colleges in 1950. This supply of geologists compares with requirements for 1278 at the professional and subprofessional levels. The report contains a detailed statistical study of the supply and demand situation for geologists in the 1949-50 period. •The dark cloud of over-production in the bituminous coal industry has a silver lining, according to Natural Resources Notes. Closing marginal mines, mostly strip and truck mines, will result in lower average costs and higher quality of the coal still produced. The producers that will then constitute the industry will be properly equipped and adequately financed to carry forward an intensive campaign to holdd and increase the markets for bituminous coal. •A light, compact, highly reliable blasting machine which does not rely for its effectiveness on the operator's skill is being tested by the Army Engineers. Operating under all climatic conditions from -65 to 125F, the 50-cap machine consists of a springwound do generator and is waterproof.
