I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. A recent survey of existing analytical results, and an attempt to correlate them with each other and with the known history and behavior of the samples, indicated that none of the commonly applied methods could be considered established as intrinsically reliable. It was. therefore, desired to attempt to establish the reliahility of some one method by external evidence. If this were to be accomplished, other methods could then be evaluated in terms of the method establibhed. The correct method was accordingly to be chosen without regard for cost, speed, or convenience; with the requirements for routine application to be reserved for 1ater consideration. The method of total combustion was chosen and submitted to a limited number of tests against primary standard samples. Considerable experimental difficulty was encountered, indicating that additional work on the experimental arrangements is desirable. While the work to (late by no means represents a completed investigation, it is helieved that the combustion method is basically sound and that its development should be continued. Choice of Method Of the several available methods, mechanical disintegration. electrochemical methods'2'3 modifications of the Sieverts experiment,% and vacuum fusion, were all judged to contain one or more factors of un- certainty not at present completely cvaluated or suhject to complete control. These methods, therefore, were considered currently unsuitable for referee purposes. Solid evolution was considered to be of doubtful significance when conducted in the alpha range. A reasonable chance for a true analysis was found for evolution in the gamma range. Preliminary tests have indicated a very slow rate for evolutioll from gamma iron. indicating a running time of possibly 100 hr. for a one-centimeter sample. Difliculty in distinguishing such slow. evolution from blank gas was anticipated, hence the method was not consitlerctl the most suitable for the present purpose. The combustion method was evaluated as being most sound on fundamental principles. The only important unknown would be to determine that the iron oxide formed did not occlude water at the tcmperaturv of the combustion.with the odvious precautions of using a sound and clean specimen, providing a system sufficiently tight to give acceptable blanks in longtime runs, and providing a suficicntly sensitive measuring system, reasonable, precise, and truthful analytical results could be logically expected. Apparatus The equipment as originally operated is shown in Fig. I, and the glassw-are in its latest modification in Fig. 2. The theory is developed that the tons ground through a given mesh per day in a wet ball mill is proportional to the percent plus that mesh in contact with the balls and the net power applied to the balls at this point. A grindability test is described. DURING the course of a study of the fundamentals of classification in 1937, the need for a more basic understanding of the action of a ball mill became acute. Unless one knows how classification affects grinding, one cannot hope to effectively improve on classification. The methods of evaluating grinding efficiency that depend on surface developed were studied but soon discarded for two reasons: 1. There was no apparent method which could be generally used to give a reliable figure for the actual new surface developed as a result of grinding. Subsequent papers have not changed this conclusion. 2. The practical evaluation of grinding in the main ore dressing applications was in terms of the percentage retained on a screen which passes 90 to 99 pct of the material and not in terms of surface area. The Probability Theory With the background of our experience in the field of closed-circuit grinding, together with the papers of Lennox,1 Gow,2 Gaudin,8 Fahrenwald,4 Coghill, and others, the approach of the theoretical physicist was then tried. The thought was somewhat as follows: When one grinds in a ball mill, a given expenditure of power leads either to a certain number of point to point blows per hp-hr or to a certain distance of line contact per hp-hr, depending on whether the action of the balls is considered to be cascading or rolling. It is also assumed that the balls actually come together on each blow or during the roll. Then a volume of slurry will be covered per minute which is some function of the size of the particle being considered (see fig. 1). All particles coarser than this size will be reduced through this size. This volume of slurry contains a certain weight of ore, depending on the percent solids and the density of the solids. If we fix the percent solids and the density of the solids and let w be this certain weight of ore in the volume covered, then, in mathematical terms, what we have just postulated is, w —— 8 hp (a) dt If W is the total weight of ore present in the mill, then we can write. A crude analogy would be to picture a 1-ft-wide steam roller going down the road at 1 ft per sec. If we place one egg on the road per square foot, one egg will be smashed per second. If we place a dozen eggs per square foot, a dozen eggs will be crushed per second. Similarly, if all the particles in w are plus the mesh, i.e., C=100, we should have a maximum rate of reduction. If only 10 pct of them are plus the mesh (C=10), we would have only one tenth the maximum rate; if only 1 pct are plus the mesh, the balls have a hard time finding anything to work on. This is where the term "probability theory" comes from. The chances of the balls crushing a particle through a given mesh depends directly on the concentration of particles coarser than this mesh in the general pulp in the mill. Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 19, January, 1908, pp. 1 to 31. BERNARD MACDONALD, Guanajuato, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Keyes's paper is very interesting to me because of my personal experience with the development of the ore-deposits of Lake Valley. Seeing that many of the important facts connected with the early history of the development of these mines are either now unknown, or have become more or less distorted, and thinking that it would be interesting as well as valuable to have these recorded as a historical supplement to Mr. Keyes's elaborate paper, I present the following narrative: In February, 1881, soon after the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé railroad made connection with the Southern Pacific at Denting, N. M., the Lake Valley properties were brought to the attention of New York and Philadelphia capitalists by John A. Miller, of Silver City, N. M. At that time silver was $1.10 all ounce and silver-mining was very attractive. Vast fortunes were being made in Leadville and other Colorado camps, and Tombstone was pouring out its millions. Lake Valley, like all' other mining-camps in their early history, had its drawbacks, but the railroad, then passing within 14 miles of it, mitigated many of these. The camp lay in the foot-hills of the Black range, in which the Apaches had their stronghold, and raided, when it suited their convenience, the surrounding country, killing the prospectors and pioneer settlers and stealing their cattle. This band of Indians was joined by the outlaws and desperadoes from the frontiers of Texas, Arizona, and Mexico, who collectively defied the United States soldiers, restrained, as the latter were, by the mollycoddles from the East. In the present work, experiments determined the effect of the order-disorder reaction near the Fe,Al composition on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction of single crystals: A material which is more difficult to magnetize in one direction than in another is anisotropic, that is, the ease with which ferromagnetic materials may be magnetized in different crystallographic directions determines the anisotropy. Two investigators have estimated the anisotropy of the aluminum iron alloys from poly-crystalline data;1,2 however, these estimates should not be considered to be reliable. Siege1 made two accurate measurements of the first anisotropy constant* from single crystals of 4.0 wt pct aluminum sotropy throughout the ferromagnetic aluminum iron system have been described. These results were obtained from single crystals which were slowly cooled and, hence, ordered near the Fe3Al composition.4 Magnetostriction is the change in length per unit length resulting from applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material. For the purpose of this report, the saturation magnetostriction was measured. This is the maximum change in length per unit length resulting from an applied magnetic field large enough to saturate the material in a given direction. This magnetostriction has been determined for single crystals of the ferromagnetic aluminum-iron system.' The crystals near Fe3Al were also ordered. PREPARATION AND TREATMENT OF SINGLE CRYSTALS Single crystal bars were grown from the melt.' The raw materials for these crystals were iron and aluminum of 99.9 and 99.99 pct purity, respectively. A quadratic formalism is developed lor the representation of the excess free energy, and of the activity coefficients of each component of a ternary system in the vicinity of a single component selected as solvent. This formalism, in contrast to the e formalism, is thermodynamically consistent at .finite concentrations. Numerous specific systems are used as illustrations, with cross checks where possible; these systems are Fe-C-X systems in the vicinity of 1600°C and include practically all those for which reliable data are available. It is shown that this formalism is usually quite adequate to rebresent available data up to a solute concentration of 20 to 30 at. pet. It is hoped that the formalism here presented may prove useful for the treatment and tabulation of data on ternary and multi-component solutions. SINCE, as discussed in a prior paper,' we do not as yet have an adequate basic understanding of the nature of binary metallic solutions, we cannot hope to be in better position for ternary and multicomponent systems. However, the accumulation of thermodynamic data on ternary and multicomponent metallic solutions has led to an urgent need for a rational formalism for the presentation and use of such data. Notable attempts to represent the isothermal isobaric thermodynamics of ternary solutions were made by Benedict et 01.' and by Wohl.3 These attempts were directed toward developing an analytic expression adequate to encompass the entire ternary triangle, primarily for organic systems; they generally involve the power-series approach, which has been shown' to be inappropriate, in general, even for binary metallic systems. On the other hand, interest in the thermodynamics of ternary and multicomponent metallic solutions has tended to focus either on general thermodynamic relations4-10 over wide compositional ranges, or on cases where one or more components have been at rather low concentration. This latter approach has been followed by Wagner,= by chipman,11 and by Alcock and Richardson,12 and more recently in many publications by the same and other authors. It has already been shown' that the thermodynamic behavior of binary metallic systems is, in general, relatively simple only in the terminal regions. Hence, it would appear that any approach, at this time, to a simple formalism for ternary and multicomponent systems must, a fortiori, be limited to the vicinity of the major component or solvent. The present treatment is aimed to be useful for a given solvent with moderate solute concentrations ranging up to 20 or 25 at. pet and in exceptional cases to considerably higher concentrations. In order to achieve even this modest objective, it is necessary that any appropriate formalism have built into it 1) a thermodynamic consistency (at least within the desired degree of approximation), and 2) an approach at infinite dilution to Raoult's law for the solvent and to Henry's law for each solute. Let us first formulate the condition of thermodynamic consistency for a ternary system. Under isothermal isobaric conditions, we may write for the molal value G of any extensive function dG - C1 dN1 + G2 dN2 + G3 dN3 [l] where the G's are the corresponding partial molal quantities and the N's are the atom fractions. Theories correlating the formation of u and related intermetallic compounds to the electron-per-atom density of binary and ternary alloys have appeared regularly in recent technical literature. These same principles can be modified and applied to complex precipitation-strengthened alloys such as the iron-, cobalt-, and nickel-base superalloys and the stainless steels. Since these complex alloys contain carbides and other phases that normally precipitate before the U-type phases, the nature and amount of the precipitated phases must be calculated first. The following general formula is then applied to the residual matrix composition of the alloy: element. The magnitude of the resulting number is indicative of whether the alloy will form a a -type phase. When these calculations (which are computerized) are systematically applied to alloys of knoun phase analysis, a breakoff in average electron-vacancy number is noted between U-free and U-prone alloys. Alloys with an average electron-vacancy number higher than the breakoff form a-type phases, while those with lower ones do not form these phases. This method could then be used to eliminate from consideration all experimental compositions that would precipitate undesirable phases. It also is useful in evaluating analyzed heats of alloys where minor heat-to-heat variations determine whether the alloy is o-free or o-prone. THE highly significant development of strong, ductile superalloys to provide reliable construction materials in the 1000" to 2500° F temperature range has been due principally to unremitting application of Edisonian techniques and logic by the dedicated physical metallurgists who have shouldered this responsibility. Tools such as the electron microscope, phase analysis, and computers to accomplish regression analyses have been used heavily, but the effort has been essentially practice of an art, rather than a science. The objective of this paper is to describe and illustrate application of some relatively fundamental principles to certain of these alloy systems in an attempt to remove some of the empiricism from the technology. Specifically, the work presented here deals with the use of periodic-group relationships to predict the formation of intermetallic phases which can occur in primarily austenitic (fcc) structures. Calculations that have been developed might be applied in the design of new alloys and the evaluation of known alloys, and thus have the potential of eliminating vast areas of unnecessary alloy preparation and evaluation. ALLOYING CONCEPTS AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF SUPERALLOYS Strength is produced in austenitic superalloys by three principle mechanisms: 1) precipitation of y'; 2) formation of carbides; 3) solid-solution hardening by soluble refractory metals. The first mechanism requires the addition of aluminum and titanium, the second requires carbon and carbide-forming elements, while the third calls for the addition of molybdenum and/or tungsten. A considerable concentration of chromium is usually maintained to resist oxidation/corrosion, but it is also an important carbide-forming element. THE main value of earth magnetic measurements, outside of certain mining problems, resides in the study of deeply buried tectonic phe-nomena related to regional and local geology. Magnetic surveys are a necessary complement of gravimetric measurements, especially of pen-dulum surveys. To date, magnetometer, prospecting has been used chiefly in the study of sedimentary basins where petroleum structures are associated with the uplifted basement rocks. There are, in the literature, innumerable articles dealing with such surveys as applied to oil geology but few treat of broad geological features related to regional magnetic disturbances of the earth field. An important piece of coordina-tion work has been made by Jean Jung1 for the magnetic and gravimetric measurements made in France and their geologic significance. A similar attempt at correlation of the known geology with the anomalies of the vertical component of the earth magnetic field has been made for the United States by George B. Somers2. Taking the magnetic vector as a whole, W. P. Jenny' made a coordination of magnetism and geology for the main producing oil states of the United States. A more detailed study along the same lines is published by A. Van Weelden4 for southern Oklahoma and northern Texas; in this work magnetic and gravimetric measurements taken at stations as close as one mile apart are compiled and compared to the regional geology of the Ouachita-Amarillo uplifted area. From the literature mentioned, it is evident that reliable interpretation of magnetic anomalies can be arrived at only when the magnetic stations are numerous and cover the area in a close net of measurements, therefore the works of Somers and Jenny, based on sparsely distributed Government measurements, can be regarded only as preliminary programs indicating lines along which further work should be done, whereas the coordination made by Van Weelden is an example of the contribution to the knowledge of regional geology that can be arrived at by the use of applied geophysics.

The magnetic after-effect, in the form of time decay of permeability (l/µ), has been used to obtain independent data on the solubility of' carbon in pure iron. The results differ slightly from the solubilities obtained through internal -friction experiments. The mechanism of the time decay being the magnetic analogue of internal friction, it appears necessary to explain the observed discrepancies, and some suggestions are made. THE purpose of this work was to establish the reliability of the time decay of permeability as a measure of dissolved interstitial in the body-centered-cubic lattice, and further, to establish techniques suitable for such measurements with samples of a form convenient for various other measurements. This particular sample form was the "epstein" strip, i.e., 25 cm by 3 cm by 0.035 cms. While the general conclusions are not limited by this geometry, there are two aspects of the samples that may be relevant: a) texture, and b) grain size, which ranged generally from 1 to 10 mm. Effects due to these two possible parameters were thought to be small and were not investigated. Calibrating the time decay technique and the other experimental procedures by measuring the solubility of carbon in pure iron suggested itself because of the accumulation of data on this subject through the related technique of the internal friction'; The essentials of this report have been published in a somewhat condensed form.5 Since then some additional data have been taken. It is the purpose of this paper to add these data and to provide more complete description of the experimental techniques than was possible then. The time decay of permeability is a form of the magnetic after-effect.6,7 Permeability is measured immediately after demagnetization (µº) and also long after (µ8). The time decay, ?(l/µ), is the difference 1/µ8 - 1/µ0 and has been considered to be proportional to the concentration of a dissolved interstitial6,8,9,12 The relaxation time! 7, is characteristic of a particular diffusion, and affects the permeability as follows: where he being the activation energy for diffusion of the interstitial. Reference is made to the works of snoek6 and Neel7 for a complete discussion. A brief exposition of the principal ideas may be in order here, as follows. On the basis of the simplest model, resistance against domain wall motion increases with time after demagnetization due to the diffusion of interstitials to preferred sites created by the magnetostrictive tetragonolization under the strong magnetic field. Thus permeability, measured with a small field after the abrupt removal of the large field, will continuously fall with the process of diffusion of the interstitials, and the total "time decay" (or "time decrease") should be proportional to the amount of interstitial in solid solution. In the present report, use is made only of the total time decay rather than of the nature of the progress of the decay; the only problem involved in this approach is the need for assurance that only one interstitial is contributing to the effect as used. It is felt that the special use made here of the total time decay warrants the conclusions. Other work has been going on elsewhere on the detailed study of the nature of the time decay.8'9 EXPERIMENTAL A) Materials—12-lb ingots were made in a vacuum furnace from high-purity iron and by a series of hot and warm reductions were brought down to 14-mil strip. This was cut into 25-cm epsteins. The pure iron was decarburized at 750 °C by hydrogen. The time decay measurement for the decarburized iron (see below) indicated a satisfactorily low starting level of interstitials. Grain growth to grain sizes of 1 to 10 mm was produced in the pure iron by a 700" anneal in hydrogen after a critical reduction of about 7 pct as suggested by previous trials. No measurement of texture in the pure iron was made. The grain size was taken to be large enough to be beyond any sharply critical size regarding solubility. B) Infusion of Carbon—Since the permeability measurement required about two dozen epsteins, a special method of carbon infusion had to be developed to ensure homogeneity of infused carbon. INTRODUCTION Underground fires continue to be one of the most serious hazards to life and property in the mining industry. Although underground mines are analogous to high-rise buildings where persons are isolated from immediate escape or rescue, application of technology to locate and control fire hazards while still in their controllable state is slow to be implemented in underground mines. Even in large surface structures such as hotels, often only fire protection systems which meet minimal laws are implemented due to the high cost of adding extensive extinguishing systems, isolation barriers, alternate ventilation, escape routes and alarm systems. Incomplete and ineffective protection occasionally is evidenced where costs would not seem to be a factor, such as the $211 million MGM Grand Hotel fire November 21, 19801. Paramount in increasing fire safety and decreasing the threat of serious fire is early warning followed by proper decision analysis to perform the correct action. However, very complex fire situations can be produced in structures such as high-rise buildings and underground mines simply because of the distances between the numerous fire-potential locations and fire safe areas. Other complexities arise when normal activities occur that emit products of combustion signaling a fire condition to a sensitive fire/smoke sensor. For example, the operation of diesel equipment or the performance of regular blasting can produce combustion products that reach the sensitive alarm points of many sensors2. Smoke detectors for surface installations provide fire warning when occupants are at a distant location or when sleeping, thus greatly reducing injuries and property damage. However, when installed in the harsh environments of underground mines, fire and smoke detection equipment soon becomes inoperative, unreliable, or requires excessive maintenance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has performed many studies and tests to improve fire and smoke protection for underground mine workers3. This paper describes several USBM safety programs which included in-mine testing with mine fire and smoke sensors, telemetry and instrumentation to develop recommendations for improving mine fire safety. It is hoped that the technology developed during these programs can be added to other programs to provide the mining industry with the necessary fire safety facts. By recognizing fire potentials and being provided with cost-effective, proven components that will perform reliably under the poor environmental conditions of mining, mine operators can provide protection for their working life and property equal to that which they provide for themselves and their families at home. The basis of this report is two USBM programs for fire protection in metal and nonmetal mines4,5 and one coal program6. The data was collected beginning in May 1974 and continuing through the present with underground tests of a South African fire system installed at Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and a computer-assisted, experimental system at Peabody Coal Mine in Pawnee, Illinois. The conduct of each program was as follows: • Define the problem and its magnitude in the industry • Develop concepts to solve or diminish the problem • Review available hardware or systems approaches to fit the concepts • Install and demonstrate the performance of a prototype system through fire tests in an operating mine. MINE FIRE FACTS Whether in coal or metal and nonmetal mines, the potential severity of fire hazard is directly related to location. As shown in Figure 1, fire in intake air at zones A, B, C or D can cause contamined air to route throughout the mine quickly if not detected, isolated or rerouted. Causes and location of former metal and nonmetal fires are represented in Table 1; the cause and location of fatalities and injuries is shown in Table 2. Coal-related fires and their impact on deaths and injuries are graphed in Figure 2; their locations are described in Table 37. Significantly the table shows that the hazard to personnel was three times greater for fires occurring in shaft or slope areas, and the percentage of deaths and injuries was four times that of other areas. Number of Persons Affected A 129-mine sample indicated that from 8 to 479 employees per shift work in underground metal and nonmetal mines, and that deeper mines have larger populations, as shown in Figure 3. Coal mining relates similar employment, and a 16-state sample of 670 mines employing at least 25 persons shows the distribution in Figure 4. Drift mines accounted for 58 percent of the sample but employ only 45 percent of the underground workers.

The activity of sulfur was determined as a function of composition of ferrous sulfide by equilibrating with hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures at 670° , 800°, and 900". The present results supplement the available data over the composition range from 36.6 to 39.5 pct S. The X-ray lattice spacing measurements made are in accord with the available data and indicate that the limiting composition FeSl.008 may be taken for the iron-iron sulfide equilibrium. The growth rate of ferrous sulfide on iron was measured by reacting iron strips or blocks in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. Owing to the slow approach to equilibrium between the gas phase and the surface of the sulfide layer, The sulfidation experiments were carried out for several days. It is shown that the growth rate ullimately proceeds in accordance wilh the parabolic rate law. From the parabolic rate constants and the thermodynamic data on iron sulfide the self-difiusivity and chemical diffusivity of iron in ferrous bisulfide are evalualed. The self-diffusivity of iron thus derived zs found to increase with increasing sulfur content. THE ferrous sulfide known as "pyrrhotite" is a non-stoichiometric phase having a wide composition range from about 50 to about 58 or 60 at. pct, depending on the sulfur activity. RosenQvistl studied the thermodynamics of this phase over wide ranges of temperature and composition. Hauffe and Rahmel' and Meussner and ~irchenall~ studied the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron in sulfur vapor. By using markers, these investigators showed that the iron cations were the predominant diffusing species in iron sulfide. This is confirmed decisively by the self-diffusivity measurements of condit4 who showed that the self-diffusivity of sulfur in ferrous sulfide is several orders of magnitude lower than the self-diffusivity of iron. Although much has been learned from these studies about the Fe-S system, further research on this subject was considered desirable for better understanding of the physical chemistry of iron sulfide. This work was confined to the study of the kinetics of sulfidation of iron in hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen gas mixtures. The results of this study are given in two consecutive parts. Part I, the present paper, is on the parabolic rate of sulfidation of iron and the diffusivity of iron in ferrous sulfide. The second paper, Part 11, is on the kinetics of the surface reaction between hydrogen sulfide and ferrous sulfide. About 1 g of iron powder or foil. contained in a small recrystallized alumina crucible ind suspended from a calibrated silica spring, was reacted with a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known ratio until no further change in weight was observed. %hen the gas composition was changed and the new state of equilibrium was established after several hours of reaction time. The composition of the sulfide was obtained from the initial weight of the sample and the weight after equilibration. X-Ray Studies. The lattice parameters of some of the equilibrated samples were determined using the General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer with a cobalt tube (no filter) set at 40 kv apd 10 ma; the CoK, radiation was taken as 1.79020A. Observed 220 and 311 diffraction peaks of silicon served as an internal comparison standard to correct for possible misalignment of the goniometer. The lattice parameters of the sulfide phase were calculated from the corrected Bragg angles of the 110 and 102 peaks. Rate Studies. In the initial experiments attempts were made to measure the parabolic rate of sulfidation by measuring the gain in weight of a thin iron strip, -0.05 cm thick, suspended from a silica spring in the reacting atmosphere. The preliminary experiments showed that this technique was not reliable for the measurement of the parabolic growth rate of the iron sulfide layer. In the subsequent experiments the data on growth rate were obtained by measuring, on a microscope stage, change in the thickness of the sample after reaction for a specified time in a hydrogen sulfide-hydrogen mixture of known sulfur activity. For each reaction time a new sample was used. Precision-machined iron blocks, 0.5 by 2 by 5 cu cm, were de-greased and annealed in hydrogen for several hours prior to the sulfidation rate measurements. The experiments were carried out at 670°, 800°, and 900°C in gas mixtures having the ratios, and 1.0 for periods of times from a few hours up to 8 days. Apparatus and Materials. A vertical globar tube furnace with a 3-in.-long uniform temperature zone was used. The glass tube fittings were fused on the zircon reaction tube, 1.5 in. diam. The temperature was measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh/Pt thermocouple placed in the hot zone of the furnace inside the reaction tube (an alumina thermocouple sheath was used). A separate thermocouple was used for the temperature controller which maintained the furnace temperature constant within about 2°C. Anhydrous liquid hydrogen sulfide and oxygen-free dry hydrogen from gas tanks were used in preparing the gas mixtures by the constant head capillary flow-meters. In all cases volume flow rate was 1000 cu cm per min at stp, corresponding to a linear velocity of about 6 cm per sec at 800°C; under these conditions

A comparison is made between the amount of interstitial water found by analysis in cores and that estimated from the resistivity curve of the electric log for the corresponding strata of producing reservoirs. It is shown that while the determined and the estimated water saturations are in good agreement in some cases, this agreement may be due to a fortuitous compensation of errors. Estimates of water saturations made from the electric 1og by use of existing relations should, therefore, be employed with caution. Also presented are data on the variation of salinity of interstitial waters in reservoir sands, and on the effect of variation of salinity and porosity on the validity of estimates of water content made from the electric log. INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of electric logging there have been recurrent cycles of optimism and pessimism as to the value of the electric log in the quantitative estimation of reservoir fluid content. The very early days of electric logging were an optimistic period, in which there was widespread faith in the ability of the resistivity curve to reflect fluid content, and in the ability of the potential curve to indicate textural characteristics. In time the accumulation of exceptions to this idealistic behavior brought about a general disillusionment, and caused the more pessimistic of those dealing with electric logs to believe that the sole importance of the log lay in stratigraphic correlation. Within the last several years optimism as to the quantitative use of the electric log has been revived, primarily as the result of the stimulating work of C. E. Archie' on the estimation of interstitial water in sands from resistivity data. Even though the general trend of thought on the quantitative value of the electric log reflects optimism, it is inevitable that there are some widely divergent opinions of the validity of quantitative estimates based on the electric log. A valid method of estimation of fluid content by means of the electric log and a general knowledge of the textural character of the reservoir rock would be of signal importance, not only in that it would save time and money in securing information on reservoirs now being drilled, but also because it would permit the evaluation of reserves in many fields drilled without adequate core data subsequent to the advent of electric logging. Because of this importance, Humble's Production Research Division, in cooperation with various other company divisions, initiated several years ago series of tests designed to evaluate the reliability of estimates of fluid content made from the electric log. The investigation was limited at the outset to sand reservoirs, since it was felt that the inclusion of limestone reservoirs would entail needless complications. In devising these tests it was immediately apparent that the chief difficulty in evaluating the worth of any method of estimation lay in establishing the true value of fluid content. The results of direct analyses of cores cut with ordinary mud were not sufficient, because of the probability of contamination of the fluids by filtrate from the drilling mud; the results of restored state tests on cores were deemed unsuitable because these results can hardly be said to furnish a primary standard. The method adopted was the direct analysis of cores cut with an oil-base drilling fluid. Such cores, when properly handled, are believed to afford the most precise determination of water content available at the present, and, in addition, lend themselves readily to the determination of various other properties which are pertinent to the estimation of fluid content from the electric log. Since it was desired to compare the fluid contents estimated from the electric log run in ordinary mud with cores cut in the same hole, the use of oil-base fluid necessitated the changing over, after all cores were cut, to a conventional mud. This procedure presented several advantages, one of which was that the use of oil-base fluid permitted

Preferred orientation, particularly in irons and low-carbon steel, is a phenomenon that is both of considerable importance and theoretical interest. At times it is a liability and at other times an asset. In deep-drawing operations, preferred orientation is extremely undesirable because it necessitates trimming operations and increases scrap loss. Furthermore, oriented metals are likely to crack more easily than randomly oriented material because the forming of symmetrical and unsymmetrical shapes out of preferentially oriented metals and alloys increases the probability of rupture in regions of high stress, owing to differential ductility.' In the electrical industry, on the other hand, preferentially oriented silicon irons are in demand for transformer application because of the improved magnetic permeabilities in the rolling direction.2 This phenomenon of preferred orientation in soft magnetic materials has been responsible for the tremendous improvement in transformer design and construction in recent years. Directional properties in metals have received a great deal of attention in the metallurnical -literature,3-9 in which much of the information reported about orientation has been obtained by conventional methods, mechanicai properties and X-rays. A wealth of data has been obtained and often at a great expenditure of time. The recent introduction of the magnetic torque measurements on ferromagnetic materials provides a very simple and rapid method of evaluating orientation. The judicious use of the method can supply important information, but it should be borne in mind that such studies must be supplemented by X-rays, optical methods,10 and etch and pressure figures" to get a rational understanding of the orientation phenomena. No claims are made that the magnetic torque of evaluating orientation will reveal the behavior of the metal in deep drawing. For this purpose the accepted tests for deep-drawing quality must be used. For a good drawing stock, which must have low impurities, desirable grain size, ductility, strength, hardness, good surface, random orientation, and good recrystallization behavior, it cannot be expected that any simple test will be satisfactory for appraising all the factors. The only factor on which the magnetic method can be used is orientation, which is, of course, of considerable importance. When directionality can cause a 10 to 15 per cent change in tensile strength and a IOO to 300 per cent change in tear length,12 it goes without saying that a reliable as well as rapid method for detecting these changes would be desirable. There are certain inherent advantages in testing orientation by the torque method: The method is rapid with the proper type of equipment; no elaborate preparation of specimens is required—it is only necessary to punch or machine a I-in. disk of the sheet material and insert it into the testing device.

A prototype equipment has been designed and built for the digital recording of well logs on magnetic tape at the same time that the regular film recording is made. The format of the digital tape produced is such that it can be used directly at the input of the ZBM 704, 7090 or other models of ZBM computers which accept digital magnetic tape. This apparatus has been used for the experimental field recording of dipmeter tape logs which were subsequently computed by means of an ZBM 704 or 7090. In this paper the equipment and the digital tape are described briefly, and their application to the computer-interpretation of dipmeter data is discussed. A principal element in the interpretation of the dipmeter log is the correlation of the three microresirtivity dipmeter curves to determine the depth displacements between them. Several correlation methods for computer use are considered, with particular attention to their sensitivity to error and their consumption of computer time. The tape data were used to compute information content of the dipmeter microresistivity curves in terms of their frequency spectra. The results show that the sampling rate used in recording the digital information is quite adequate and illustrate a use of the digital tape in evaluating the characteristics of new tools. Some examples of field results are shown. It can be foreseen that, when digital tape recording becomes available for general field use, a whole new realm of possibilities will be opened up for the processing of other well logs through computations, which hitherto were not feasible because they were too laborious and time-con.sunzing. INTRODUCTION The last few years have seen a revolution in the design and production of data-processing equipment. Stored-pro-gram digital computers have progressed from a research curiosity to the basis of a major industry. There are now hundreds of such machines in daily use in the United States. With the acceptance of a technique that was, in fact, already clearly described by John von Neumann in 1945, the last decade has seen great strides in the development'of components, reliability, programming systems and, most spectacularly, in the sheer number of machines built and in use. In 1957 there were enough digital computers available to the oil industry to justify the suggestion that it would be worthwhile to investigate the possibility of using these machines in processing well log data.' The first result of this investigation was the appearance of what may be referred to as the input-output bottleneck. Well logs are customarily recorded on film. To get these data into a machine required then (and still does): a time-consuming semi-automatic reading of the film; conversion of the log data to digital form; and recording these digital data in some medium acceptable for computer input, such as cards, magnetic tape, or punched paper tape. However, the recording, reading, and re-recording could only result in deterioration of the data. Therefore, it was concluded that the fist step should be the development of a new, more direct recording technique supplemental to the film recording, which would provide easy access to the digital computer. There are many solutions to the problem of recording log data in an easily recoverable form. After careful consideration it was decided to adopt the boldest solution which, it was felt, was also the most elegant. It was decided to record well logs directly, in the field, on magnetic tape in such a way that this tape could be used without further modification as an input to the IBM 704 or 7090 computer. To realize practical field recording of magnetic tape logs, it became necessary to develop in a rather small package, an analog-to-digital converter, a tape recorder, and the necessary multiplexing and control circuits to allow the simultaneous recording of a multiplicity of logging signals. The magnetic tape recording was to be made simultaneously with the conventional logging operation in such a way as not to interfere with it. Along with the development of hardware, it was necessary to begin development of interpretation techniques and machine programs that would exploit the power of the digital computer. Here, again, there is a long list of possible applications. After much consideration it was decided to concentrate on the interpretation of the dipmeter log as a first application. It is the object of this paper to describe in some detail the developments sketched in the last three paragraphs.

There are three things that all coal consumers look for when they burn coal: (1) suitability for their particular requirements and burning equipment, (2) uniformity of shipments, and (3) quality as expressed by heating value and other chemical and physical tests. Suitability, or proper application, is determined generally from previous buying experience. It is a function of (1) the reliability and integrity of the shipper and distributor, (2) of a certain coal field or seam and of (3) uniformity and quality. Quality is limited by the location and geology of the seam and mine, the mining and preparation methods and equipment and the knowledge and ability of the personnel. Uniformity of shipments is in many ways the most important factor in coal selection. Lack of uniformity in chemical quality, size consist and treatment cause most of the customer complaints that arise from faults of the coal shipper. Lack of uniformity destroys suitability and quality standards, causing a large customer turnover, and greatly increases sales expense and reduces the net return to the operator. Oil and gas fuels are more uniform in quality than solid fuels, and there will be more gas and oil competition for coal markets after this war than before, because the size of their market is a direct function of the dimensions of their pipe lines, which have been greatly increased during the war. Present mechanical coal-cleaning equipment based upon gravity concentration has gone a long way toward giving us a coal of uniform ash content. The chart in Fig. I, by Hebley,1 shows the greater uniformity of the ash content of washed coal as compared with that of raw coal. Wide variation in the nature and amount of ash in the coal feed to the washer leads to a coal of non-uniform ash content. Mechanica1 cleaning equipment does not understand such terms as ash-softening temperature, coking properties, size consist and sulphur content. Unless the feed to the washer is uniform, the washed coal probably will not be uniform. Table I shows the ash, sulphur and ash-softening temperature of two mines in the Pittsburgh bed, both raw and washed, loaded over the same tipple; also No. 3 and No. 4 Pocahontas seams, both raw and washed, loaded from the same preparation plant. It is obvious that they must be blended or loaded separately if a uniform product is to be obtained. Why Is Blending Necessary? It was natural for the operators of captive mines producing by-product coals to recognize the necessity for blending raw coals of different quality and coking characteristics. They have had many years of experience with blending high, low and medium volatile coals at their oven plants.
