In a previous paper,1 the occurrence of (0001) and (0111) twins was reported for compression tests of 60-deg-oriented sapphire rods in the temperature range from 1100° to 1300° C. Subsequent to this initial work, additional tests have been conducted, and twinning has been found to occur at temperatures as high as 1500° C. Also, the temperature and strain-rate conditions for the two types of twins and for slip have been established in more detail. The present note covers this more recent work. During the nineteen months in which our country was actively engaged in the war, the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corpn. expanded the shipbuilding capacity of the United States from an unimportant position among the world's producers of ocean-going tonnage to first place. At the same time it increased the overseas merchant fleet of the United States from a negligible quantity to second place. The shipbuilding program has been greatly reduced since the signing of the armistice. There have been suspended or canceled contracts for 754 ships aggregating 3,797,825 deadweight tons, which would have cost $797,564,276 to complete. The cost of canceling these contracts will be about $202,853,456, and the saving effected by cancelations will approximate $594,710,820.

Mineral pigments give color, opacity, or body to paint, stucco, plaster, mortar, cement, linoleum, rubber, and similar materials. They must be finely divided, substantially insoluble, and generally inert for such uses. Inorganic pigments may be grouped somewhat arbitrarily as follows: A. Natural mineral pigments dug from the earth. 1. Those consisting mostly of iron oxides, such as hematite and limonite. 2. Those containing large amounts of clay or noncoloring matter, such as ocher, sienna, umber, and colored shales. 3. Those whose color is not due to iron oxide, such as Vandyke brown (including sap brown, an alkali extract of Vandyke brown), graphite, and terre verte. B. Synthetic pigments. 1. Those containing iron oxide as the essential coloring matter, such as "pure" reds, yellows, and blacks, and Venetian reds. 2. Those not containing iron oxide, but rather such compounds as lithopone, zinc white, titanium white, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and the like. Only groups A and B-1 are discussed here. All the pigments in those two categories, except Vandyke brown, sap brown, and some of the carbonaceous slates, contain, as their essential color constituents, one or more compounds of iron; namely, an oxide-limonite (2Fe2O3.H2O to Fe2O3.4H20), hematite (Fe2O3), or magnetite (Fe2O3.FeO). Man's first permanent coloring materials were earth pigments-the ochers, iron oxides, and various iron-stained clays. The caves occupied by prehistoric man and the arts of the ancient Chaldean, Egyptian, and Cretan civilizations bear mute witness to this and also testify to the beauty and permanence of earth colors. As the Roman era developed, earth pigments were pushed from their pre-eminent position by white lead and red lead and in the Middle Ages by zinc oxide. Today, of course, the number of acceptable pigments is very large and on a value basis the group of natural and synthetic earth pigments stands forth with $16,000,000 per year; it is surpassed by titanium, lead and zinc pigments. Of this sum,21 natural pigments supplied 31 pct of the tonnage and 16 pct of the value of the total finished pigment in 1957, the remainder representing the tonnage and value of sales of the synthetic iron oxide colors. The average value of finished natural pigments in 1958 was $80.62 per ton. The average value of manufactured pigments in the same year was $202 per ton. Of the 60,000 tons of manufactured colored pigments sold in 1958, the reds comprised 76 pct of the market and the yellows 20 pct. The reds furnished 68 pct of the value and the yellows 24 pct. Of the finished iron oxide pigments (natural and manufactured) sold in 1958, the reds dominated the market with 66 pct of the quantity and 63 pct of the value; yellows supplied 17 pct of the quantity and 20 pct of the value, and browns furnished 11 pct of the quantity and 10 pct of the value. The average value of the reds was approximately $152, and the average value of the yellows $190 per ton. The highest valued pigment in 1958, with almost 12 pct of the total tonnage and 21 pct of the value of the iron oxide pigment market, was manufactured red from calcined copperas valued at $286 per ton.

RESERVE Mining Co., owned jointly, by Armco Steel Corp. and Republic Steel Corp., controls 9% miles of magnetic taconite ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range lying between Mesaba and Birch Lake. The ore reserve which can be mined by open pit methods is conservatively estimated at 1.5 billion tons under a shallow, loose overburden requiring no rock stripping. Taconite now being mined is in the upper cherty horizon. It has been metamorphosed by the intrusion of gabbro and most of the iron oxide is altered to magnetite. The nonmagnetic portion of the iron is practically all in the form of silicate. The magnetic iron is finely disseminated through the rock and requires grinding -150 mesh for clean liberation of the iron oxide from the gangue.

It is shown that equations for grain-boundary migrntion given by Gordon and Vandermeer, based on a theory first advanced quantitatively by Lucke and Detert, satisfactorily explain recent data on both GRAIN boundary migration in recrystallization and in postrecrystallization grain growth has been the subject of extensive studies for many years. Only solute-independent and solute-dependent boundary migration during recrystallization in zone-refined, poly crystalline aluminum, and during grain growth in zone-refined tin. with the advent of zone-refining, however, has it been possible to carry out such studies on high-purity metals, and thus to delineate quantitatively the major effect On the migration rates of very small percentages of dissolved imPurities. The high-temperature oxidation of Pt metals results' in the formation of volatile oxides. The evaporation of which considerably increases the metal losses in oxygen-containing atmospheres when compared with high-vacuum or inert-atomosphere conditions. The paper describes gravimetric investigations carried out to determine the metal losses of polycrystalline samples of Ru, together with earlier studies on Ir and Pt at oxygen pressures of 10-3 to 1000 mbar and temperatures > 1000 °C. A strong pressure and temperature dependence is noted. Preliminary results of the oxidation of Pd are reported, too (665 mbar 02, 1100-1300 °C). The oxidation mechanism is discussed and the oxidation rates of Ru, Pd, Ir and Pt are compared with those of the other Pt metals Rh and 0s and of refractory metals.

The paper outlines the parameters required for an estimation of the size of chain pillars for longwall coal mining. The principal parameters are: stress distribution around the edge of the extracted coal panel, strength properties and geometry of the pillars. The principal thrust of the paper is directed toward correlating the chain pillar strength to the magnitude and direction of strata load expected to act on the pillars. A brief review of the pillar strength formulae pertinent to chain pillar stability is given. The chain pillars are categorized as 'yielding' or 'stiff', depending on the duty required of them. The coal measure strata is classified as 'soft' or 'hard' conditions, the degree of competence of the roof and floor greatly influencing the caving characteristics of the gob and the stability of the roof chain pillars.

AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. The opening of a new large-scale beneficiation plant is always news, but the start-up of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Eagle Mills near Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula early in October is of particular interest because of the completely different type of operation being carried on at this plant. The ore boat which left Marquette, Mich. on the 3rd of October bound for the plant of Wisconsin Steel Division of International Harvester, not only carried the first output of this new mill, but also carried the first agglomerate made from the Upper Peninsula's jasper ore, the first commercial output from an updraft traveling-grate furnace, and the first large-scale commercial application of the balling disk, also called the flying saucer, to the agglomeration of an iron flotation concentrate.

Wrought iron and steel have been prepared from limonite, hematite, and magnetite ores by gaseous reduction, compacting and squeezing the resulting product at high temperature and finally melting the wrought iron so formed. The structure, analyses, mechanical and magnetic properties of the products are given. It is found that the structure of iron ores is best studied by subjecting them to gaseous reduction and using metallographic technique on the resulting sponge iron. In this way the cell structure of iron ore is clearly shown. The wrought iron made by heating compacted sponge iron to 1450" C., and forging, shows a cell structure inherited from the ore. This cell structure is further preserved in melting and casting the wrought iron. The probable relation of the properties of the materials to this inherited cell structure is discussed.

The fall meeting of the. Institute of Metals Division will be held in Philadelphia on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. All meetings will be held in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Broad and Walnut Streets, which is also the hotel headquarters. As this meeting is being held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Foundrymen's Association, the members of the Institute will have the privileges of the exhibit of the Foundrymen's Association. This, it is expected, will be one of the largest exhibits made in this country. On Monday evening, Sept. 29, there will be a meeting, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, of former officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Institute. It is requested that all officers and Committee members, the present as well as the past, will arrange to be present.

The desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications—exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. I) has been found very convenient for this purpose. (communication to the Secretary*).-In that hart of Mr. Wilson's paper describing the Gilman cut-and-fill system, a few features do not appear to be fully explained. In what way is the waste used for filling obtained? The text mentions that, if waste is encountered when driving the filling raises, these raises are stopped until the fill is needed; that seems to suggest mining the capping for fill, which might make the backs of the stopes had as the stopes approach the top of the ore. If, on the other hand, the fill is brought to the raises in cars, are the crosscuts that are necessary in ore or waste? Is the cost of this fill included in the stoping costs given?

"The Great Falls of the Missouri are situated about 12 miles below the City of Great Falls and development work for the utilization of the power which they afford is now in progress. The natural fall is about 77 feet.The development will consist of a concrete dam 1,000 feet long on the crest line, and 73 feet high. The power house will be set below the present falls near the north end and the tailrace will be cut below an island which is situated just below the falls. The maximum head will be 153 feet. The power house will contain six units of 15,000 horse power each. The construction as contemplated will comprise about 180,000 cubic yards of concrete work, using 200,000 barrels of cement."

Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.
