IN recent years the use of high sulphur fuels and charges in steelmaking has necessitated rapid methods of slag control in order to insure the production of high quality steel. Several systems of control have been discussed in the literature, and of these the method described by Philbrook, Jolly, and Henry' has received the most attention recently. In their process the hydrogen ion concentration of an aqueous slag suspension is determined under controlled, but arbitrary conditions. The basicity of the slag may then be derived from a previously established pH-V ratio curve. Thus, by measuring the pH, some indication of the V ratio is gained, from which significant properties of the slag may be deduced. Philbrook et al. made no claims as to the theoretical justification of their treatment, but simply offered it as a rapid means of slag control. Encouraging results caused others to study the method and publish their findings.2-5 Although there was fair agreement on the efficacy of the method, no common parameter was evolved against which pH readings could be plotted. The results of the various determinations were related to such V ratios as CaO/SiO2 and CaO/ SiO2 + P2O5 by some,'-3 while others" plotted against "excess lime." Rivet,' however, found a simple proportionality between the hydrogen ion concentration and the sulphur content of the molten steel beneath the slag. Since slag control in North American practice is largely directed toward the efficient removal of sulphur from steel, Rivet's approach to the problem had the advantage of connecting directly a property of the slag with the impurity being removed. In view of the diversity of parameters used it seemed probable that some fundamental point was being overlooked in seeking a relationship. Examination of the literature revealed that much emphasis had been laid on experimental detail but scant attention paid to the fundamental aspects of the hydrolysis of the aqueous slag suspension. Consequently the present investigation was undertaken with the object of rectifying this deficiency and deriving, if possible, a parameter of general application. Petrographic studies on several matured Canadian open-hearth steel slags have shown that their major constituents are dicalcium and tricalcium silicates set in a complex matrix of iron oxides and ferrites. These phases are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Free lime is frequently encountered in slags, but is not an equilibrium phase since on continued heating it dissolves forming silicates or ferrites. Thus, it appeared that a study of the hydrolysis of the major phases in steel slags would be profitable. The experimental technique used in the present work was a modification of that described by the other workers.'- Electrical conductivity measurements were also made on the suspensions, since Smith et al." had claimed advantages for this method in their paper on slag control. WE vote this month without knowledge of either major presidential candidates' position on mineral problems. Too long have we kept our own counsel, turned our backs on the public. Certainly we must formulate policies upon which we may unite in industry council, but implementation of these by legislative bodies requires popular understanding, if not support. The earth and its resources are the province of the miner and the farmer but beyond this, and the basic need of the economy for both, the similarity ends. In this election year the disparity between the poll strength of these two fundamental callings is apparent. While both candidates have found it essential to incorporate a farm plank in their platforms, mining has been neglected as not being a basic issue. If this gives the mining fraternity the advantage of voting objectively, it also leaves the general public in the dark as to the attitude of the candidate on a basic issue. It is an issue on which depends the future of the nation, but, unfortunately, the public is not aware of its own vital stake in mining. Thus election time brings with it a fresh example of the evils of automatic lawn sprinkling-a long standing peeve of ours. Back in the days of the hand-held sprinkling hose in the intimacy of the twilight the mining man had the opportunity to unburden himself on the problems of mining to his neighbor who might be a doctor, lawyer, or accountant. With the encroachment of mechanized sprinkling, yet another forum for the indoctrination of the layman into the significance of mining has disappeared. Familiarizing your neighbors with mining in the lawn sprinkling societies of yesteryear was the individual's contribution to public relations for mining. The corporations can use educational advertising in popular magazines as is practiced by such companies as Kennecott. The AIME can play an important part by providing career guidance information on the mineral industries. We offer the suggestion to the American Min¬ing Congress, that the splendid exhibitions of mining machinery featured in alternate years for metal and coal mining, respectively, might be opened to the general public one night during the week of the show. Newspaper publicity would add greatly to the public's interest in such an opportunity. Power for the public is considered a vote-getter and no candidate has neglected to make his stand on this subject. Is the price of the kilowatt in the home of greater importance to the voter than the price of the metal durable goods which he purchases every year? Not really, but the voter thinks so. Mining has as much sales appeal as 'potatoes or kilowatts if presented in the proper way. We suggest that a little hand lawn sprinkling by the right people in the right places would produce an abundance of publicity which would give Mr. and Mrs. American something new to expect from their representatives-a vigilance over the flowering of their mining industry.

Since the entry of the United States into global war, virtually all data and information necessary for compiling figures on world petroleum consumption have become unavailable. This situation undoubtedly will continue until the world petroleum industry can return to a peacetime basis. During the past 10 years, the authors, by publishing annual estimates of .world consumption, have attempted to emphasize the importance of a yearly world-wide survey of petroleum supply and demand. It is beconling more and more evident that statistics for the United States alone can no longer give a comprehensive idea of the state of the petroleum industry, even within the United States itself. Therefore, when conditions in the industry again become normal, it is the hope of the authors that those bureaus equipped to do so will carry forward the study of petroleum supply and demand on a world-wide basis. Enough data and information are available, however, to attempt a rough estimate of world output of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942, which to some extent may reflect the trend of world consumption. This estimate by countries, as compared with the output in 1941, is shown in Table I. The world production of crude petroleum and petroleum substitutes for 1942 is estimated at 2,208,000,000 bbl., or a decrease of 171,000,000 bbl. under 1941. Crude production is believed to have decreased by about 200,000,000 bbl., (about 9 per cent); while petroleum substitutes increased by 28,500,000 bbl., (nearly 20 per cent). The decline of crude output in the United States is estimated at 19,000,000 bb1.—less than 2 per cent; while that in foreign countries is estimated at 180,000,000 bbl., or more than 20 per cent. The marked decline abroad is due largely to losses in Venezuela and Colombia, where the lack of ocean transportation became the controlling factor, and in the East Indies and Burma, where military invasion brought about the destruction of the fields. The production of petroleum substitutes in 1942 apparently reached a new high figure of 7.5 per cent of the total world petroleum output. The important features of petroleum production outside of the United States are the changes that have taken place during the year in the supply of the Axis countries. In Japan the output for 1941 was estimated at 8,800,000 bbl., 5,500,000 of which were petroleum substitutes. It is believed that the output of synthetic oils during 1942 substantially increased, raising the total interior production of Japan to nearly 10,-ooo,ooo bbl. Also, during 1942 Japanese armed forces gained possession of oil fields having a normal peacetime output of about 78,000,000 bbl. per year. The production of these areas for 1942 is estimated at some 23,000,000 bbl., which indicates that Japan is now getting at least 33,000,000 bbl. a year, which exceeds by 8,000,000 bbl. Its

THE oxidation of titanium has been studied in recent years by a number of investigators.'-W ne of the most important aspects of the reaction of titanium with oxygen, which has been observed by several of the investigators, is the extremely high solubility of oxygen in the metal. A detailed study of the Ti-0 systeml% as shown that the solubility limit of oxygen in a-titanium is approximately 14.5 wt pct 0 from 800" to 1700°C. The unusual oxidation behavior of titanium may be ascribed to this phenomenon, since part of the oxygen uptake enters into solid solution in the metal and only a part is available for scale formation. A more complete study of the kinetics of oxidation of titanium would require information on the influence of oxygen in solution in the metal upon the oxidation rate. Such information would also be of interest in regard to the theory of oxidation of metals. The authors have measured the oxidation rates of oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free titanium between 800" and 1200°C and have found appreciable differences in their rates of oxygen uptake and in the activation energies. The experimental set-up was similar to that described in a previous paper.u The course of oxida-dation was followed continously by attaching the specimen to a sensitive spring balance and observing the extension of the spring with time of oxidation. High purity electrolytic oxygen was used and precautions were taken to purify the gases employed. The specimens were prepared from iodide titanium and were ground on metallographic polishing papers to a fineness of 4/0. The furnace was first evacuated and filled with argon; the specimen was lowered into the furnace, which was then evacuated and filled with oxygen, after the specimen had reached the oxidation temperature in argon. The samples were presaturated with oxygen by means of the following procedure: Each specimen was first heated in oxygen at 1200°C until its increase in weight indicated 13.8 pct by weight uptake of oxygen. The furnace was then immediately evacuated and filled with purified argon five times. The specimen was heated in the argon atmosphere for a period of 72 hr at 1200°C in order to saturate the metal with oxygen by complete absorption of the scale. The temperature was lowered to the oxidation temperature, the furnace was evacuated and filled with oxygen, and the oxidation rate was followed by noting the extension of the spring balance. No oxide film was visible on these specimens at the start of the oxidation experiments. Titanium samples in the oxygen-free as-received condition were also oxidized and their oxidation rates measured. The results are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which indicate that the initial rates of uptake of oxygen by both the oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free specimens are parabolic at these temperatures. A method is described for measuring two- and three-phase relative permeabilities in sandstones or sand packs using a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to determine fluid saturations. Two- and three-phase relative permeabilities have been determined on Boise sandstone using the NMR technique of saturation measurement. Three-phase relative permeability to water was found to depend only on the water saturation, whereas three-phase permeability to oil depended on both the water and oil saturations. Relative permeability to gas in three-phase flow was found to depend only on the total liquid saturation. INTRODUCTION Three-phase relative permeabilities are extremely useful in calculating field performance for reservoirs being produced by simultaneous water and gas drives. Three-phase relative permeability data are also needed for analyzing solution gas-drive reservoirs which are partially depleted and are being produced by water drive. Some thermal recovery processes involve three-phase flow which require three-phase relative permeability data for predicting reservoir behavior. Unfortunately, three-phase relative permeability measurements have rarely been made. Also, because of the scarcity of three-phase data, it has not been possible to date to relate other measured rock characteristics to the relative permeabilities with a great certainty. Leverett and Lewis,l Reid2 and Snell3 have reported three-phase relative permeability data on unconsolidated sands. Leverett and Lewis used ring electrodes spaced along the length of the sand sample to measure the resistivity of the sample which was assumed to be monotonically related to brine saturation. Gas saturation was determined from pressure-volume measurements. Oil saturation was obtained by material balance on the cell containing the sand sample. This method is involved and time consuming. Another difficulty arises from the fact that the resistivity of the sand is a function not only of saturation of brine but also of the distribution and saturation history of the brine in the pore spaces. Reid2 used a gamma ray absorption technique for measuring liquid saturation. This method has the disadvantage that total liquid saturation rather than oil or brine saturation is all that can be measured and still another method is required to determine the saturations of individual components. snel13 used a neutron bombardment method which also required a separate determination of the individual component saturations. Caudle et al.4 measured three-phase relative permeability on consolidated sandstones using vacuum distillation for determining fluid saturations. Distillation after each reading makes this technique very lengthy and time consuming. Corey et a1. 5 and Naar and Wygal 6 measured three-phase relative permeability on sandstones by the capillary-pressure method. Semipermeable diaphragm assemblies were used at each end of the core specimen to keep the water phase in the core. Gravimetric methods were used to determine fluid saturations. Sarem7 recently reported an unsteady-state method for measuring three-phase relative permeability on sandstones. This method is an extension of Welge's method8 for measuring two-phase relative permeability. Although Sarem's method is simple and comparatively fast, the assumptions involved may oversimplify the problem. Sarem's assumption, that in all rocks relative permeability to each fluid will depend only on the saturation of that fluid, seems to be rather unrealistic. Neglecting capillary effects at the end of the core is also a weak assumption. Donaldson and dean9 measured three-phase relative permeability using a method similar to Sarem's.

RECENTLY the "oriented growth" hypothesis of recrystallization textures has been receiving considerable attention. According to this view, "whenever a new generation of grains is growing in a highly oriented matrix . . . one may assume . . . that from among available nuclei of a great variety of orientations those with suitable orientation relationship with respect to the matrix have by far the highest rate of growth (oriented growth) and will, therefore, predominate."' This statement includes primary recrystallization of single crystals and of polycrystalline materials showing strong deformation textures as particular cases. While the phenomenon of oriented growth undoubtedly does operate, and may be of importance in coarsening or secondary recrystallization, the writer feels that its extension to primary recrystallization is a different matter. Several aspects of this phenomenon may be pointed out which are difficult to rationalize on the basis of oriented growth. In recrystallizing deformed single crystals of alpha brass, Maddin, Mathewson, and Hibbard2 found that the twin composition planes of the recrystallized grains were parallel to the three operative slip planes they observed, and not to the fourth octahedral plane. The writer's current work seems to indicate further that when only one or two slip systems can be seen to operate, the recrystallized grains are aligned only with those slip planes actually observed. This behavior could hardly be accounted for by oriented growth, because on the latter basis the recrystallized texture of a deformed single crystal should certainly have the same symmetry as the crystal itself. Growth rates could not be expected to distinguish between crystallogra- phically equivalent directions, unless the presence of a visible slip system vastly increases the growth rate in the appropriate direction. This seems unlikely. These relationships were observed by the writer only when considerable care had been exercised before annealing to etch away the effects of cutting out the centers of tensile specimens with a jeweler's saw and to etch off the ends of compression specimens. When these.precautions were not taken, nu-cleation inevitably appeared to occur at the saw cuts or at the ends, and the resulting orientations never showed a [111] rotation but appeared quite random. The provision of many nuclei of many orientations did not enhance the correlation, but destroyed it. Recrystallization textures are sometimes strongly dependent on annealing temperature, which would imply that the anisotropy of growth rates is a suddenly varying function of temperature. This might be regarded as unlikely. Recrystallization textures can be strongly dependent on the degree of deformation. If textures are to be explained by selective growth from among nuclei of all orientations, it is difficult to see how the recrystallization process could have any dependence whatever on the manner or degree of deformation. It is felt that the above points should be considered before the oriented growth hypothesis is applied to primary recrystallization, with the necessary complete divorce of the mechanism of recrystallization from the details of the deformation process. THE mining engineer is being more generally called on to examine and report on properties where the introduction of mechanical loaders is proposed, and as the use of these labor-saving devices presents an entirely different problem from that of hand-loading, an outline of procedure is herewith pre¬sented based on five years of intensive field experience in making such studies. It is impossible to outline an examination which will cover every condition but the most important variables are noted and the re¬port may be amplified or abridged to suit individual mine requirements. There are, of course, exceptional cases in which a single minor variable will determine the final conclusion; the result of mechanical loader application can be, estimated within close limits by considering all variables listed and taking into account the sum of all those found to be applicable to the property under examination. It is necessary that a high degree of accuracy be exercised in the analysis of conditions, and that a relatively narrow margin be figured on all estimates of tonnage outputs and costs. In making an examination for this purpose the data as to company name, business address, name of mine, geographical location, rail or water connections, type of mine (whether shaft, slope, or drift), and the name of seam should, of course, be included, to be followed by the minimum, maximum, and average thickness of seam, a brief description of the charac¬teristics of the coal, the impurities contained, location of regular impurities or partings, together with nota¬tion as to quality, uses, and-markets for the coal. It is also necessary to make cross-sections of the seam so that face preparation may be studied in an effort to eliminate all regularly-occurring impurities at the working place. The possibilities for further cost re¬ductions by the removal and gobbling of partings under¬ground before mechanically ? loading out a face are sufficiently great to warrant careful study and analysis. The classification of the mine from the standpoint of gaseous or non-gaseous operation will determine the general type of electrical equipment needed. A notation regarding the power whether generated at the mine or purchased, together with the amount, voltage, and type of current available is necessary since these matters determine the exact type of elec¬trical equipment to be used. A brief description of the ventilating system, giving type of fan, amount. of air delivered, water gage, and whether force or ex¬haust type, will enable the engineer' to figure venti¬lating requirements per man under mechanical loading practices. The pitch of seam in degrees, the pitch of working faces, and a brief description of rolls or horsebacks should be included, as these affect the efficiency of mechanical loading and, therefore, the economic re¬sults obtainable. -Notations should be made as to the amount of water found in working faces, and whether pumping, sprinkling or rock-dusting methods should be considered. As the character of the floor affects the operation of the machine at the face if a cater¬pillar-tread type, its hardness should be determined, and also whether impurities consisting of floor ma¬terial are likely to be loaded with the coal. The char¬acter of the roof and overlying stratification determine the mining system and width of roof span at work¬ing faces. It therefore directly regulates the amount of tonnage to be loaded by machines without a move from one place to another.

It is well-established that hydrostatic pressure distribution is hardly achieved during uniaxial compaction of powders. All the previous investigations1-4 give consistent results and this variation is attributed to the die-wall friction. The conclusions are based on measurements of the density of very small portions of the compact. Although the analysis of the density or the strain distribution in the compact is very helpful in obtaining information about the stress distribution within a powder compact, it does not describe the problem from a more fundamental point of view. The densification in metal powder compacts takes place chiefly by plastic deformation (ignoring particle rearrangement) at the points of contact of the powder particles. The onset of yielding and subsequent growth of the contact areas (for spherical powders) take place fixed by a constant stress equal to three times the yield stress in tension or compression,5-7 assuming little or no work hardening. Therefore, by deforming spherical powders in the die and measuring the contact areas on each particle, the load at each contact point can be determined. In the present investigation, this was done by hot-pressing uniform spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The details of the experiment have been described elsewhere.' The spheres were studied for the size and the number of contact points on each particle using a specially designed goniometer. It was found that the deformed faces that were approximately normal to the direction of pressing were about 2.2 times larger than those parallel to the direction of pressing. Fig. 1 shows the typical deformed sphere. A detailed study showed that the mean value of the contact areas on each sphere was within 5 pct for all the spheres in the die (ignoring those touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die).' The spheres touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die were found to have larger contact areas (8 to 10 pct) which indicates higher pressures in these regions of the compact and thus higher compact densities in these regions. These results show that density distribution calculated from such an experiment will give results consistent with the previous investigators. The temperature coefficients of electrical resistance of 31 alloys in the nickel-rich corner of the Ni-Cr-Fe system were determined. The results indicate that a range of binary Ni-Cr alloys has lower temperature coefficients than a specific region of Ni-Cr-Fe alloys which has been reported and quoted by others as providing the lowest coefficients in the ternary system. DESIRABLE properties of resistivity and temperature coefficients of resistance have been the basis for the successful commercial application of various Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Fe alloys. In particular, low or negligible temperature coefficients of resistance are necessary for wire used in precision wire wound resistors and potentiometers involved in closely controlled electrical and electronic circuitry. Alloys most successfully applied to this purpose basically have not been ternary Ni-Cr-Fe alloys but rather heat-treated Ni-Cr alloys in the region of approximately 73 to 79 pct Ni and 20 pct Cr with significant additions of other elements such as aluminum, silicon, iron, copper, manganese, and cobalt. While the addition elements play a vital role in the nature and control of the temperature-resistance curve of any one of these alloys, the inherent relatively low temperature coefficient of the binary Ni-Cr base composition itself in the approximate region of 80 pct Ni and 20 pct Cr contributes fundamentally to the eventual negligible temperature coefficient obtained with the applied alloys. W. A. Dean 1 has reported mean temperature coefficients (20' to 100oC) of as-cast samples for the Ni-Cr-Fe system, the nickel corner of which is given in Fig. 1. Dean had to use as-cast samples because alloys from a considerable region of the system were unworkable. Dean refers to the work of Hunter and sebast2 who used annealed wire samples to show that, for chromium contents of 10 to 25 pct, the temperature coefficient increases as the iron content is increased at the expense of nickel. Although the data of Hunter and Sebast were limited in the nickel-rich areas to eight samples of 60 to 91 pct Ni with only four samples containing iron, the possibility that no Ni-Cr-Fe alloy has a lower temperature coefficient than certain binary Ni-Cr alloys should have been given serious consideration. However, Dean's work has been referred to by J. S. Marsh,3 who, quoting Dean, states that for the temperature coefficients "the smallest values-about 0.0001 per oC (100 ppm)—were found for alloys containing about 55 pct Ni and 20 pct Cr" (balance iron). A region such as that reported by Dean would be significant to those trying to develop alloys for the applications described. Therefore, a series of three-pound laboratory open-air induction melts of Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Fe alloys were melted, conventionally processed to 0.005 in. diam wire, and continuously strand annealed at 1900° F. The basic Ni-Cr compositions, with balances essentially iron other than usual minor impurities, and the corresponding temperature coefficients of resistance and resistivities are given in Table I. The resistivities are approximate and are not to be considered as a basis for relating them to their position of composition in the ternary system. The wire diameters were determined with a micrometer, and not by weight and density measurements which would be required for accurate resistivity values. However,

In the selective flocculation of iron ores, the concentration of alkaline earth ions in pulp solutions plays a critical role. Sodium silicate, alone or with sodium tripolyphosphate, has been used as a dispersant. When Ca+ + concentration exceeds 15 to 20 ppm, however, only a strong complexing agent, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was found to be effective (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). Some iron ores release Ca+ + in excess of 20 ppm. With ores that contain gypsum, the Ca+ + concentration may reach several hundred ppm. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effectiveness of EDTA with nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in countering the adverse effects of Ca+ +, particularly at high Ca+ + concentrations. Emphasis was placed on the use of NTA since it is more cost-effective than EDTA. It is also used in detergents in some countries (Malaiyandi, Williams, and O'Grady, 1979). NTA, like EDTA, forms a soluble complex with Ca+ + with a 1:1 molar ratio. Its structure and the value of log Kca are given below together with EDTA (Shibata, 1963). [ ] For experimental materials, an equal weight mixture of Lac Jeannine hematite and a high-purity quartzite from Thompson, MN, both ground to - 30 µm (- 560 mesh) was used. Selective flocculation test conditions and procedures were identical to those used in previous investigations (Heerema, Lipp, and Iwasaki, 1979). The optimum level of starch addition for the above mixture was determined to be at 300 g/t (0.6 lb per st). Initially, a series of selective flocculation tests were performed on the mixture pulped with 10-3M CaC12 (40 ppm Ca + +) at pH 11. With no NTA present, flocculation of the entire suspension resulted. The selectivities achieved in tests with 90, 100, and 150% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA were virtually identical to each other and also to the selectivity of separation obtained in the absence of Ca+ + Such an observation could have been expected since Ca+ + concentrations up to a few ppm may be tolerated in selective flocculation (Krishnan and Iwasaki, 1982). A similar series of tests were performed at 10-2M CaC12 (400 ppm Ca+ +). The results are shown in Fig. 1 as grade¬recovery curves. For comparison, the results obtained in the absence of Ca++ are included. At 90% of the stoichiometric amount of NTA, a large enough concentration of uncomplexed Ca+ + was left in solution to cause indiscriminate flocculation. Note in this figure that NTA is capable of countering the adverse effect of Ca+ + even at this high concentration when it is used in excess of stoichiometric amounts. The free Ca+ + concentrations at 100 and 150% are calculated to be 2.5 and 0 ppm, respectively. [ ] The relative effectiveness of NTA and EDTA was then compared at 100% of the stoichiometric amount using 10-2M and 10-3M CaCI2 (Fig. 2). EDTA appears to be slightly more effective than NTA. The free Ca++ of 0.02 ppm in 10-2M CaC12 with EDTA compared to 2.5 ppm free Ca+ + with NTA might account for the difference. As evident, prohibitively high additions of EDTA and NTA were required to complex high concentrations of calcium ion. The use of both of these agents would result in the accumulation of complexed Ca+ + in recycle water.

The performance of laboratory water floods is compared with the flooding behavior calculated by the Buckley-Leverett techniques from steady-state relative permeability-saturation relations. Both the steady-state and unsteady-state experiments were conducted on the same sand-packed column. Relative permeabilities were calculated by the Welge technique from the unsteady-state waterflooding displacement experiments and compared with those measured by steady-state techniques. An evaluation of the various calculation procedures was made. It was demonstrated that steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to calczcJate waterflood performance. INTRODUCTION To calculate the waterflooding behavior of a given reservoir, relative permeability-saturation relations of the reservoir rock are required. These relative permeabilities are commonly measured on core samples by steady-state experiments such as the Penn State technique.' The relative permeabilities obtained in steady-state experiments are calculated from oil and gas flow rates and pressure drops measured under conditions of equilibrium distribution of oil and water in the pore spaces with slow approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, in water floods the water saturation at a given point changes rapidly with time as the flood front passes. Extensive research2 has shown that the steady-state relative permeabilities to oil and water are independent of the rate of flow and the fluid viscosities. Research has also demonstrated that the waterflooding performance of homogeneous sands uniformly contacted by water is independent of rate when capillary pressure gradients, which are important in short laboratory columns, are made negligible. However, there is little experimental data in the literature comparing relative permeabilities calculated from steady-state flow experiments with those calculated from flooding experiments. In this paper, the production data of two water floods and the relative permeabilities calculated from a series of steady-state experiments on an unconsolidated sand column are presented along with the comparisons calculated by the Buckley-Leverett and by the Welge techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine if steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to predict the waterflooding performance. This study also permitted an evaluation of the Buckley-Leverett and Welge calculation procedures and allowed an insight into the nature of microscopic displacement of oil by water. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus used in this investigation was a Lucite column 1 ft long and 11/2 in. in diameter. A drawing of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Six pressure taps were evenly spaced along the top of the column to measure the oil pressures. Three pressure taps fitted with small porous disks were spaced along the side of the column to measure water pressure. Water was admitted to the inflow face of the sand through a porous disk while oil was admitted through a hole in the porous disk and distributed to the face of the sand by grooves machined in the porous disk. Retainer screens of 325-mesh stainless steel were cemented over the inlet and outlet ports and the pressure taps to prevent loss of sand. The column was packed with a clean dry sand all of which was finer than 200 mesh. Next, the sand was saturated with a solution of 150,000 ppm sodium chloride solution. The column was weighed dry and water-saturated to obtain data for the calculation of the pore volume. A 151-cp oil was then injected into

THE existence of v phase in the Mn-Mo system was discovered in this laboratory several years ago,' but neither the conditions of its formation nor its composition were known, and preliminary attempts to reproduce the phase were unsuccessful. We wish now to specify the information appropriate to phase formation on the basis of experiments performed since that time. The starting materials were in every case electrolytic manganese and high purity molybdenum. Two methods of preparation were employed: l—arc-melting varying combinations of the elements in an inert atmosphere and subsequent heat treating, and 2—sintering compressed mixtures of finely divided powders of the elements. In the latter method, the powders were first passed through 200 mesh screen and then compressed into cylinders of % in. diameter and % in. length, which were sintered at elevated temperatures in an atmosphere of dry hydrogen. For some samples, the sintering temperature was 1200°C (for 1 hr), and these were then heat- treated at lower temperatures for times up to 24 hr. Eventually it was found, for the proper composition, that essentially pure a phase could be produced by sintering at 1125°C for 3 hr. Quenching to room temperature was effected by means of a stream of cold, dry hydrogen in a water-cooled chamber. The arc-melting procedure was found to be unsatisfactory after an investigation of many samples at different compositions and temperatures. Large quantities of manganese were vaporized during melting and none of the products were homogeneous or contained extended regions of pure phase. Nonetheless, these experiments established that no formation occurs in the Mn-Mo system below 1115oC, and indicated, at least roughly, the composition range of interest for further exploration. The more definite results obtained from samples produced by the second method are given in Table I. A portion of sample 2 heated for 16 hr at 1000°C in a Vycor tube transformed to molybdenum plus unidentified phases of complex X-ray pattern. From these few results it appears that the region of phase is quite narrow in composition. It is of interest that the composition is such as to make for difficulties in correlating this structure on an electron atom basis with other a structures of iron, cobalt, and nickel. In that respect Mn-Mo shows the same anomaly as Mn-Cr and Mn-V systems.' A second feature is that in common with the two other known molybdenum (Fe-Mo and Co-Mo), Mn-Mo v exists only at elevated temperatures. The X-ray powder pattern of the pure a phase of Mn-Mo is given in Table 11. It agrees well with the patterns established for other structures, especially with that for Fe-Mo as given by Goldschmidt.An attempt is being made to establish whether an ordering of the respective atoms occurs and such information will be reported in a future publication. In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

Dilute Fe-Si alloys (0 to 5 wt pet Si) were cold-worked by making filings at room temperatuve. The analysis of the broadening of the X-vay powdev pattern peaks yields anisotropic particle sizes normal to the (110), (100), and (112) planes which are a consequence of deformation faults (probability a) and twin faults (probability p). The combined fault probability (1.5a +ß) increases from 0.01 in pure iron to 0.02 in Fe-5 pct Si. The root mean square stvains vary with crystallographic ovientation due to elastic anisotropy of the alloys, and increase from about 0.0035 in pure iron to 0.005 in Fe-5 pct Si measured in the [100] direction. Assuming that deformation and twin faults occur with equal probability, the X-ray data would imply that the stacking-fault energy does not change upon alloying. THE crystallographic aspects of the plastic deformation of dilute Fe-Si alloys has been studied many times since the observation of glide band structures by Barrett et a1.l These glide bands were much straighter than the wavy bands observed by Gough2 in unalloyed iron nearly 40 years ago. This difference in the morphology of the slip band structure has been verified many times, most recently by replication electron microscopy3 and dislocation etch-pitting methods.4,5 These observed differences in deformation behavior have been considered to result from the degree of cross slip that occurs in pure iron and in the Si-Fe alloys. The lowered tendency for cross slip would result from a lowering of the stacking-fault energy of iron by the silicon alloying addition. Experimental evidence for this lowered stacking-fault energy in the Si-Fe alloys, obtained with transmission electron microscopy, is the observation of dissociated dislocations in Fe-6 pct si6 and Fe-3 pct Si alloys,7 and the observation of sharply defined cellular substructures in Fe-3 pct si6,7 compared to the more diffuse substructure in zone-refined iron.' The activation energy for recovery of cold work is greater in the Si-Fe alloys than it is in pure iron, indicating that cross slip has become a more difficult process.9 The purpose of this investigation is to determine the change in stacking-fault probability from the broadening of powder pattern peaks in dilute silicon-in-iron solid solutions, when cold-worked at room temperature. The knowledge of the stacking-fault probability and the dislocation density, both of which can be deduced from line-broadening analysis of two orders of reflections from (110), (200), and (112) planes, will permit us to calculate the change in stacking-fault energy upon alloying silicon into iron. Previous X-ray investigation of cold-rolled Fe-5 wt pct Si (100)[001 ] single crystals did not reveal any line broadening, whereas cold-rolled Fe-3.1 wt pct Si (001) [110] and (001)[100] single crystals10 showed line bro2dening as a consequence of small particle sizes (-200A) and root mean square strains (-0.25 pct), which are comparable to those found in cold-worked iron filings.11 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of five Fe-Si alloys containing nominally 1 to 5 wt pct Si and pure iron were cold-worked by making filings at room temperature. The actual silicon content deviated at the most by +0.1 pct which is of no significance in the present study. The carbon contents of these materials were less than 0.02 pct. The X-ray diffraction patterns were measured with molybdenum, cobalt, and iron radiation using a GE and a Philips diffractometer. A graphic solution of Kutter's formula for the flow of water has been worked out by Dr. L. I. Hewes in connection with his course in Graphic Computations, given in the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, which may be of interest to those who deal with canals, flumes and streams. 1.811 0.002811 , 41.66+ -n+-S- I Kutter's formula, V= - n 0 .00281 78- 1+(41.66 + 0.00281)7B781 is probably the most accurate of those proposed determining the flow of water. But it is extremely cumbersome, and if many calculations are to be made their solution becomes drudgery. The purpose of this chart, Fig. 1, is to furnish a rapid solution, sufficiently accurate to be well within the limits of the observed data. WHEN the War Production Board issued its order which will end the use of iron and steel in more than 400 familiar civilian articles, the list of those products formed a fascinating and homeric catalogue of the things we use. Articles for which iron and steel may not be used after a 90-day "tapering-off" period are as workaday as office machinery and as frivolous as cocktail shakers. Mostly they are smaller items-the smallest probably are phonograph needles but in the aggregate they will save tremendous quantities of the metal most needed to win the war. In total war there are no trifles. Interesting proof of this lies in the fact that by eliminating manufacture of blackhead squeezers we shall save 110,000 lb. of steel a year. Out of this steel we might have made four 155-mm. field pieces. We might have made a thousand 3-in. trench mortars, 4400 0.30-caliber machine guns, 55 16-in. shells, 110 200-lb. aerial bombs, or three 15-ton tanks with something left over to arm them.

The crystal geometry of the cubic-tetragonal interface after partial transformation of an indium-thallium alloy single crystal is described and a general theory is presented. The effects of applied stresses on this transformation are interpreted and the latent heat of transformation is obtained from observations of transformation under stress. A DIFFUSIONLESS phase transformation between face-centered cubic and face-centered tetragonal structures has been reported for the indium-thallium system by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman1, 2 The transformation takes place at approximately 105 "C at 18 atomic pct Tl and 25°C at 23 pct Tl. In their study, Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman used poly-crystalline samples whereas in the present study single crystals were used to eliminate the transformation constraints imposed by adjoining grains. The use of single crystals made possible a comprehensive study of the effect of stress on the transformation. In the course of the work, it was possible to formulate a new method of analyzing dif-fusionless transformations (presented in this paper) which permits calculation of the geometry of the interphase interface from a knowledge of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases. The specimens were prepared from chemically pure thallium and 99.97 pct In which were weighed out to produce 3 to 4 grams of alloy of the desired concentration. The metal was placed in clean fused silica tubing, then melted, degassed and sealed under vacuum. (To obtain single crystals, it was found that both degassing and extreme cleanliness were essential.) Single-crystal specimens were grown by a modified Bridgman technique.8 pecimens were removed from the tube by dissolving the quartz in concentrated hydrofluoric acid which attacks the specimen very slowly. The specimen then was polished mechanically to produce four flat surfaces, electropolished, and annealed at 140°C for 48 hr. The electropolishing solution used was that described by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman and the polishing was carried out on both the high and low temperature phases of the alloy. The high temperature polishing was done at 110°C with a stainless steel cathode. Visual Observation of the Transformation in Single Crystals A visual study of the transformation was made on specimens which had been electropolished in the high temperature phase. The specimens were supported on the stage of a metallograph by an electrically heated holder which contained an opening for observing the specimen. Visual evidence of transformation was found in the presence of an interface which separated the two phases. The interface plane defines the boundary of the phase undergoing transformation and manifests itself by the sharp change in angle between the surface of the specimen and the incident light at the juncture of the two phases. On slow cooling, well-annealed specimens transformed from the face-centered cubic structure to the face-centered tetragonal structure by the motion of a single plane interface which traversed the specimen from one end to the other. Upon heating, the interface moved back in the reverse direction. The interface could be started, stopped, or reversed at will. A temperature hysteresis of about 31/2oC was observed in the reversal of the interface. Holding an interface stationary caused it to disappear completely in most cases, whereas in other instances the interface became less distinct depending upon its orientation. The interface could be made to reappear by changing the temperature of the specimen. The low temperature tetragonal structure exhibits only the fine markings or subbands reported by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman and is illustrated in Fig. 1. These subbands are twin-related. Back-reflection Laue patterns show the breakup of the cubic spots into pairs of spots corresponding to the twin orientations of the tetragonal phase.
