THROUGH circumstances connected with the war, the senior author lost his records, therefore it has been impossible to include numerical data in this paper. The arsenical quicksilver ore investigated had been roasted, with poor metallurgical results. The vapor-tension temperature curves of mercury and arsenious trioxide are similar, and the arsenical compound hampers the coalescence of mercury drops in the condenser and is the cause of large stack losses. The ore was a gray limestone carrying small amounts of carbon and mineralized with cinnabar and two arsenic minerals, realgar (As2S2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). The proportion of realgar often exceeded that of cinnabar; the proportion of arsenopyrite was smaller. The grade of the ore varied between 0.8 and 4 per cent Hg. The problem was to make a high-grade mercury concentrate, as free from arsenic as possible. The water used throughout the testing was hard, having a pH of about 8. FLOTATION OF REALGAR Realgar showed a very strong tendency to float. It formed a film at the surface of the pulp and floated in abundance with only pine oil. Therefore an attempt was made to float the realgar before the cinnabar, but this was not very successful; the percentage of mercury in the realgar concentrate could never be brought below 2 or 3 per cent. Cinnabar slimed easily and floated with pine oil, so that some of it always accompanied the realgar. There was also the question of the cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. On further investigation it was found that realgar can be floated not only with pine oil but even better with a combination of hydrocarbons and pine oil. Washing the ore with ether revealed that it contained hydrocarbons, which helped to float the realgar. In this connection it belongs to the same class as carbon, sulphur and talc. It can be floated also with a xanthate, when activated by a heavy-metal salt. The conditions favoring the two types of flotation are opposed, as activation by a copper salt facilitates xanthate flotation (in fact, is even necessary to it), whereas it hinders pine oil and petroleum flotation. One type of flotation can be termed nonpolar and the other polar, a distinction that has been stressed in a previous paper.1 DEPRESSION OF REALGAR AND FLOTATION OF CINNABAR 'Many chemicals were tested in an attempt to float the cinnabar and depress the realgar. Finally starch rendered soluble with caustic soda was tried, also several grades of commercial soluble starch, and dextrin was found to be the best and the most convenient reagent. Several of these starch preparations have a strong flocculating effect on the pulp, which is a distinct disadvantage. Dextrin, with its low flocculating power, is excellent. Research pertaining to flow of solutions in leach dumps has generally been neglected. This technical note proposes a method for evaluating the flow patterns and incorporating the results into dump-leaching models. Three dump-leaching models1-3 have been proposed to scale up laboratory test data to expected field results. These models are based on the same physical picture in a dump and differ only in the importance of diffusion or surface chemical reaction rate. Selection of this rate-controlling phenomemon is based on type of ore (sulfide or oxide), physical dimensions of the particles being leached, and the leach heap itself. All three models are applicable to specific types of operations. The models are similar in the use of a size distribution analysis for the dump material and the assumption that the leach solution flows around each particle. Transport of the leaching agent to the interior of the particle takes place by diffusion [(Fig. 1)]. However, normal dumps are of a higher bulk density than the material in a laboratory column used to generate the scale up data. How does this difference in bulk density affect the scale up equations? Increasing the bulk density can be expected to give more particle-to-particle contact; therefore, individual particles will be blinded by each other. As blinding increases with bulk density increase, the particles will behave like larger particles with a coarser apparent size distribution. The extreme will occur when the bulk density reaches that of the undisturbed rock, the entire dump behaving as a single particle with the dimensions of the heap itself. Harris4 alluded to this phenomenon in his paper. An alternative method of describing the same phenomemon is to consider the flow paths of the solution. At high bulk densities leach solution no longer surrounds each particle, but flow paths are separated by several particles and channeling is said to take place. Instead of the particle radius being the maximum distance through which the leaching agent must diffuse, the maximum distance is half the separation distance of the solution flow path. Particle size distribution must then be replaced in the models by the concept of channel separation distribution. Like size distribution, channel separation distribution specifies the cumulative percentage of the rock in the dump situated less than a specified distance from a solution channel. Thus, [ ] Distribution of the solution channels is a function of how the dump was built (among other things), and therefore it cannot be determined in the laboratory. Accordingly, it becomes necessary to determine a range for d and a in existing operations or measuring these parameters before leaching starts. Howard5 gives a clue to one possible technique of measuring solution channel distributions. The distortion of crystal structures referred to as "biege gleitung",1 "local curvature"2-4 and "deformation bands"5,6 is believed to be an unavoidable characteristic of deformed single crystals. The presence of asterism on Laue photograms of Al single crystals either deformed by pure shear7 or extended in a condition relatively free from the grip effect2 indicates strong evidence substantiating this point of view. The type of localized bending described in connection with the bending test of Al single crystals by Yen and Hibbard8 could conceivably exist either microscopically or submicroscopically in all types of deformation. The purpose of this note is to extend this idea to the postulate of a hypothetical "microbending site," as applied to the mechanism of slip in a general sense. The mosiac structure, as postulated by Darwin,9 is that crystals were actually composed of small blocks which have a linear dimension 10—4to 10-6 cm on the edge and deviate from each other by an angle of about one-tenth of a degree. The following discussion is based on the assumption that when slip is propagated from one mosaic block to the adjacent one, bending of the lattice at the region of their boundary is produced in order to maintain the continuity of the gliding process along a certain slip plane. Consider a two-dimensional diagram of two ideal mosiac blocks on the cross-section perpendicular to the slip plane and containing the active direction of slip. When an external force is applied, the localized bending or "microbending site," would be generated at the region as illustrated in Fig 1A at point B. A schematic diagram of a "microbending site," generated at a mosaic boundary, is illustrated in Fig IB. It may be seen that once the curvature of the bending site reaches sufficient magnitude, the interaction force encountered by pairs of atoms symmetrical with respect to the center of the bending is equal but opposite in sign. Consequently, the overall energy required to displace the atoms near the center is approximately zero.10"12 Based upon the finding that the misalignment between two mosaics is 0.1 degree,9 the assumption is made that "microbending sites" may possibly exist in the region where one plane will have one more row of atoms than an adjacent plane. It is probable that the origin of the bending site will be where the distance between two mosaic boundaries is "2d" as shown in Fig 1A at point B, where " d" is the interatomic distance. Thus, the distance between two "microbending sites" is in the range of about 600 interplanar spacings. In the case of aluminum, the spacing between two octahedral planes is about 2.33 A. The distance between two bending sites will be approximately 2.5 X 10"5 cm. During the past 60 or 90 days, the metropolitan newspapers have published much concerning unemployment throughout the nation and the efforts of the Army and various other bureaus for finding work for the returning soldiers. The United States Employment Service has 2000 bureaus throughout the country, which Nathan A. Smyth, Assistant Federal Director, states have placed more than 2,400,000 persons in employment. The Engineering Societies Employment Bureau, which, since December, 1918, has been endeavoring to put all returning engineers in touch with employers who need efficient men, has produced results that are very gratifying to the Secretaries of the four Founder Societies under whose direct management the Bureau operates. During this period, 1615 men have registered at the Bureau's office in the Engineering Societies Building; not all of these, however, are unemployed. Many are ex-army and navy men, who in passing through New York on their way home, look over the field in the hope of making a change for their own benefit before returning to their former positions. During this period, 427 positions vacant have been filed, 2300 of which positions have been filled from the men registered. The letters mailed by this Bureau amount to about 1000 a month and the number of personal calls at the office, 1600. The lowest number of positions filled has been in mining, but the lowest number of registrations is also from mining men. While in February idleness throughout the nation was increasing at the rate of 35,000 a week, under date of Mar. 7, Arthur Woods, a special assistant to Secretary of War Baker, states that there is a material improvement in the unemployment situation and that the problem is no longer a serious one. It is recognized that' the improvement wrought in each individual by his military training and experience has so increased his value that it is 'not only unfair, to ask these men to accept their old jobs at the old wages, but it is probably very unlikely that they will be willing to do so. This plain statement of improvement may not carry conviction to everyone but a concrete example will show its validity. Take the example of a young man under 21, bright and intelligent, with only a high-school education who was employed, before being drafted, on purely manual labor. He shows up well under military training and is made a corporal; he makes good and is appointed a sergeant; and finally becomes top sergeant, which requires him in many ways to handle the entire company of 250 men. The result is; even if he has not been tried by the fire of battle, he comes out of the army with a feeling of self-confidence and capacity that was entirely lacking when he went in and he has had actual experience in handling a larger body of men than the average mine foreman at twice his age, and he has had twice the average amount of detail work to take care of.

This paper is a resume of a study undertaken by the West Virginia Department of Mines. The underlying and direct causes of accidents are determined in each occupational group. Then from this study, accident prevention courses, visual and written, are to be taken to the various working groups in the mines. THE causes of accidents in West Virginia mines follow the main pattern of coal industry accidents in the United States—falls of roof, ribs and face, 56 pct; from haulage, 25 to 30 pet; blasting, 3 pet; electrocutions, 3 pct; explosions, 2 pct; and other causes, about 10 pct. To arrive at some satisfactory conclusions regarding causes and prevention of mine accidents, the Department of Mines has made a study of all mine accidents, from 1945 to 1948, inclusive. During the last two years of this period, we did not have a major explosion, one that took the lives of as many as five men. The direct cause of these accidents is apparent in the reports but we who are making a close study into their frequency think that the virus lies much deeper, and we want to suggest an underlying cause. The rapid growth of the coal industry in West Virginia, the largest producer of bituminous coal, has resulted in a demand for manpower which probably has never been equaled in mining history. At the turn of the century, West Virginia had 24,635 men employed in and about her mines, and they produced 21,153,341 tons of coal a year. In 1948, there were 125,669 men employed, and coal production for the year was 168,589,033 tons, an average increase of 35 pct for each year since 1900. Over 100,000,000 tons of this increase were mined in the southern counties of the state. A safety analyst might read into the history of this development an underlying cause for accident occurrence. He might say that in such a vast, rapid development the available supply of trained miners became exhausted and that young, inexperienced men were employed in the mines by the thousands. Being unacquainted with the hazards of mining, it would be only natural for these young men to be injured or killed in too great a number. This assumption would not be borne out by the records. Men were not injured or killed in disproportionate numbers during their first years in a mine. The only reason we can give is that, during these years, they possessed an attribute of safety—CAUTION—to a much greater degree than in the years following. The coal companies in West Virginia that have been operating over a number of years have a nucleus of employees who have been with them ten, twenty, thirty, and forty years; many of them having gained all of their mining experience with one company. IN his excellent book on the Principles of Flotation, Wark' makes the following significant statement concerning the theory of flotation: Two questions of first-rate importance must be considered . . . First, it must be decided whether the sulfide minerals require a collector in order that they may float, or whether as has been claimed, they possess an inherent floatability and need no collector. Second, it must be decided whether the xanthate type of collector can react with or be adsorbed by the unchanged sulfide minerals themselves, or whether, as many claim, reaction with the collector is dependent upon initial oxidation of the mineral surface. In the theory of flotation there are no two questions of greater importance than these. Ravitz and Porter' presented evidence that galena can be floated without a collector, and even without any reagent, provided oxidation products are thoroughly removed from its surface. They found also that thoroughly cleaned galena floated faster when xanthate was used than when a frother alone or no reagent was used, and that, without a collector, the recovery decreased gradually upon exposure of the mineral to air. Their work, however, has met with considerable criticism. I(127).3-6 This paper is presented to answer the objections that have been raised, and to present additional data that confirm their results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used to provide oxygen-free conditions for flotation has been described in detail by Ravitz and Porter. An atmosphere of purified nitrogen was maintained within the apparatus; all water and solutions used were freed of dissolved air, and could be transferred where desired by the use of nitrogen pressure; nitrogen was used as the gaseous medium for flotation. The flotation cell was essentially a glass cylinder 15 cm. long and 4.6 cm. in diameter. Near the bottom was sealed a fritted glass filter, which broke up the gas into small bubbles, and 6 cm. above this filter was a side arm through which the froth overflowed. The pulp was agitated by a glass impeller, which entered the cell through a mercury seal. For each test 17 grams of galena and 75 ml. of water were placed in the cell, after which the speed of the impeller and the rate of gas flow were adjusted. Water was added gradually during the test to keep the froth level at the proper height. The mineral was prepared and cleaned in the following manner. Exceptionally pure galena was crushed by hand on a clean bucking board, screened to - 150+ 200 mesh, and deslimed on a zoo-mesh sieve with a fine spray of water. It was then boiled on a hot plate for a number of hours with several changes of the desired cleaning solution, after which both the solution and the mineral were placed in the "mineral flask" of the apparatus. The cleaning solution was drained off, and the mineral was boiled with oxygen-free water

THE second part of the mould for making guns is the core. Without this the space could not be made where the powder is to be and through which the ball, impelled by the fire, can pass and take flight. To make this it is necessary to take two things into consideration, because they are very important. One is what you are to make it on so that it may be supported and kept true. The other is what composition of clay will stand up during casting and yet not be very difficult to extract from the body of the finished gun. For the first, it is found that only an iron spindle of a suitable thickness is able to support the weight of the clay without bending under the heat of the fire or wobbling as it is turned on its journals or when handled. This should be a braccio or more longer than the mould of the gun and worked exactly round, straight, and well tapered like a spindle; above all every one of its joints should be well secured and solid. At the upper end a per-orated heel should be made, and lower down, exactly at the point corresponding to the length of the mould, are one or two other holes through which the little crossbars can be passed that fasten the core to the outer mould and also serve for constructing the disc. Now this iron is to be arranged on two trestles, pivoted so that it may turn truly when rotated. In order that it may not run up and down, make a little iron fork which engages a notch made with a file at the foot, and another at the head. After this, you must prepare clay for the core which is well made and tenacious ,enough not to crack. Fint take care that there are no pebbles in it and that it is composed of a small amount of cloth clippings and much sifted horse dung and some washed and clean wash ashes so that it may be of a tender and crumbly consistency in order that it may later be more easily extracted from the space inside the gun. In the same way, in order that you may be able to take out the iron piece at the same time, first cover it with ashes, and then wrap it all over with a rope of ordinary thickness, leaving a dito of the iron uncovered in every palmo length. John M. Sharp, Jr. (Assistant Professor of Geology, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.)-Geothermal gradient and surface temperature data anomalies are potentially useful tools in mineral exploration, These data, however, may reflect a number of geologic and hydrologic processes as well as the thermophysical properties of the geologic materials. The author presents a relatively simple model which may be of value in mineral exploration. The lack of consideration of other processes, however, limits its usefulness. For instance, because of erosion or sediment deposition over geologic time the land surface must be considered a moving boundary in such a model. Evaluation of this effect coupled with annual surface temperature and thermal conductivity variations can result in temperature profiles such as shown in [Figs. 4 to 7]. These effects and others, such as ground-water movement," must be considered and filtered from the data before proper interpretation is possible. Another assumption which should have been discussed is, why were the observed mean surface temperatures not used for extrapolation of the gradients in [Figs. 4, 6, and 7?] Conductive heat transport responds to the actual boundary (land surface) temperature, not to theoretical temperatures in the absence of perturbations. Benfield presents a theoretical model for calculating perturbations in the geothermal gradient for erosion and sedimentation. The temperature (T) at any time (t) and any depth below the surface (x) is given by [ ] where T is the mean surface temperature, G, the geothermal gradient, v, the rate of erosion (or sedimentation),[ ], the long-term rate of change of T0, and k is the thermal diffusivity of the rock. Using the author's values and a rate of erosion of 1.54 cm per yr for a period of 10,000 yr, a thermal profile as shown in [Fig. 10] will be generated. A thermal diffusivity of 0.0164 sq cm per sec was used, corresponding to a thermal conductivity of 0.0082 cal per cm per sec per C. In [Fig. 11], a sediment deposition rate of 3.0 cm per yr for a period of 1000 yr was used to generate the subsurface temperature profile. A surface temperature of 24.3°C was used, as specified in [Fig. 9, 7], was set equal to zero for both cases. Superposition on the generated profiles in [Figs. 10 and 11] of the annual surface temperature variation perturbation (which may be calculated in a number of ways) will yield profiles similar to those in [Figs. 4 and 7]. Similar profiles can also be produced by regional ground-water flow. Models like the author's can be of value in mineral exploration. Other processes, however, which affect surface temperatures and gradients must first be considered, calculated, and filtered from the data if anything but the crudest qualitative interpretation is to be made. Robert C. Edmiston (Author's reply)-Professor Sharp has raised three objections to my interpretation of the subsurface temperature data I collected at Silver Bell. LEAD is a dull and sober metal, and in times of economic stress it en- joys, or at least occupies, a position which partakes somewhat of its physical lethargy and stability. The past ten years have witnessed in this country a decline in the production of lead, and a shrinkage of ore reserves, following closely the general economic situation. Metal prices have not justified exploration and development of new sources. Momentary rallies in industry have brought no response from lead.

Fertilizer normally is spoken of as having three main components: nitrogen, phosphorus and pot- ash. Certainly, however sulfur must also be considered a basic component of fertilizers, even though in many instances it does not end up as a part of the end product. In addition, with heavier cropping and the resultant drain of plant foods from the soil, we have now reached a point where the minor elements necessary for plant growth have become a major factor in the fertilizer industry.

A petition was received for new requirements for membership in the Institute and was ordered to take the statutory course. A petition was received for the establishment of a Tulsa Section of the Institute and was referred to a committee to report on the territory. Thirty-six Members, two Associates, and two Junior Members were elected. The status of two Junior Members was changed to Member.

The Midvale Plant of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company, situated twelve miles south of Salt Lake City, consists of mills for concentrating lead-zinc ores and a custom lead smelter. The milling department includes a 475-ton gravity mill for ores from the United States Mines at Bingham, a 100-ton Huff electrostatic zinc plant and a 60-ton pilot flotation mill for differential separation of lead and zinc. The gravity mill and electro- static plant are being replaced by a 600-ton differential flotation plant, now under construction, for differential separation of lead, zinc and iron. This new mill will have capacity for treating custom ores in addition to ores from the company's mines at Bingham.

How do you make a mine out of 500 000 kg (1.1 million lb) of uranium oxide contained in a low-grade deposit with high clay content? Confronted with these limited reserves and mineralogical problems at France's St. Pierre du Cantal uranium deposit, engineers adopted a rather unusual mill process to keep capital costs to a minimum. Crushing and grinding were eliminated by using a high pressure monitor to slurry ore directly from stockpiles. After mechanical separation of the high-grade fines from low-grade sand, the sand fraction is washed of clay to increase permeability and then it is heap leached. Fines are sent to agitated vessels for acid leaching, and the pulp from this operation is diluted by pregnant solution from the heap leaching.

The scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given' of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores.

The mineral garnet, while ordinarily considered a semiprecious gem stone or a second-grade industrial gem, has also proved itself in the field of industrial abrasives. Its use is well known as a sand-paper grain, and as a sandblasting sand its qualities are rapidly becoming recognized in more and more industries. Production of garnet as an abrasive is confined chiefly to two areas in the United States, North Creek, N. Y., where the Barton Mines Corp. operates, and Emerald Creek, Benewah County, Idaho, where the Garnet Mines, Inc., and the Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co. with mills at Fernwood, Idaho, operate. This paper is confined to a discussion of production and marketing of garnet sand by Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co.

for use in describing combined first- and second-stage creep data. In the above ?o represents the instantaneous strain on loading, ?t the limit of transient creep, ?S the steady-state creep rate, t the time, and ? a constant leading to the exhaustion rate of transient creep. It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. While not leading to a least-squares evaluation the approach is accurate and is recom-

Feasibility studies for mining projects traditionally involve in their final stages a lengthy process of repetitive trial and error discounting, in calculating the discounted cash flow rate of return resulting from the respective yearly after-tax cash flows. Also, probability analysis and sensitivity analysis (in particular) require extensive additional calculations with each change of any project parameter . These inefficient repetitive procedures have two unacceptable results: 1. they are not flexible enough to allow ready analysis of dependent parameters , and 2. they require resort to high-capacity centralised computing facilities with their inherent impersonality, rather than a convenient and available desk calculator - a factor of particular importance to top mining management. Such problems can be overcome if the mining project can be represented by a reasonable straightforward mathematical economic model. The most flexible and appropriate model has been found to be one in which a maximum and minimum value for each of n parameters are supplied to a program which determines a large number of systematic combinations of parameter events and then statistically analyses them to determine the resulting coefficients of the model. In this paper the authors discuss the selection of the most appropriate type of model and outline the steps followed in its development and application.

In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."
