This paper aims to characterise the forms of slope instability incident in surface coal mines in Britain. These are related to observed controlling factors, with particular reference being given to slope geometry and structure. The work is based on specific data collection programmes considering actual stable and unstable mine slopes. Reference is made to field examples.

Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, acid the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

IN smelting copper, lead, and silver ores, it is scarcely possible in every case to make analyses of the various parcels of ore, with the view of combining these and the fluxes so accurately as to yield, in the furnace, slags of exactly the most favorable composition. This is even more difficult with ores which require previous calcination, or with mattes which have been roasted in heaps. Even in cases where the greatest pains have been taken and the most elaborate calculations made beforehand, it frequently happens that variations in the working of the furnace interfere with the result so much desired. Generally, the practical metallurgist must be content with ascertaining the average composition of his ores and fluxes, making a calculation once for all as to the most advantageous mixture, and leaving slight changes in its composition to be taken care of as it is passing through the furnace. The various products then afford him the best material whereon to base his judgment as to the manner in which his smelting mixture is working. Of course the character of the slag is one of his chief guides, but it is not always possible from its outward characters alone to form a correct judgment as to its composition. Neither would it be possible or practicable to apply chemical analysis for this purpose, as it would be impossible to wait for its results while working a furnace. Abich was, I believe, the first to point out the relation existing between the composition of volcanic rocks and their densities, and to show that, the latter being ascertained, very correct conclusions

None of the industry submissions could persuade the Canadian Tax Reform draftsmen that the rate of return has had as much bearing on investors' decisions to invest in Canada as the success records of Canadian ore findings. The goverment opted for the position that mining capital goes where the ore can be found. Many tax incentives which were available until the end of 1971 have been greatly reduced. However, it is still recognized that new ventures in exploration and development of natural resources deserve a break even if there is reduced recognition of the established and highly successful members of the industry unless they continue to search and develop. The latter will also get some breaks for processing beyond the prime metal stage.

No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

The title of my talk, "What Happened to the Uranium Boom?" is old news. Certainly it is for this group. All of us that make our living in uranium know that the boom of the last half of the 1970's is over. U.S. production has been exceeding consumption by more than two to one. Mines and mills are closing and yellowcake prices have been dropping for over 20 months. The gloomy outlook for the industry in the near term has been well documented by soothsayers of various descriptions, your daily newspapers, and in the Nuexco Monthly Reports. I'd like to attempt to describe the next upturn in the market (speculate, really) based upon the clues we're seeing now. In order to do that, I'd first like to go over briefly, some of the market factors that contributed to the recent price drop and resultant production cutbacks, and then hypothesize on the way these factors are changing and will change. Market prices are greatly affected (maybe even entirely determined) by buyer perceptions. This is particularly true with uranium, because of the long lead times associated with nuclear plant construction and also with conventional mine/mill development. Before the price rise (say, 1975) utility uranium buyers believed that: 1) U.S. producers would have difficulty expanding to meet U.S. demand. 2) Australian and Canadian production was essential to avoid shortages in the early 1980's. 3) Uranlum prices would continue to rise as demand exceeded supply. 4) Enrichment capacity would become inadequate. It was thought necessary, therefore, to build enriched inventory in the early 1980's for use in the late 1980's. Artificially accelerated expansion of the uranium producer industry was necessary to accommodate anticipated enrichment demand. Current perceptions are largely the opposite. These are the beliefs that were held most of this year and late last year as prices dropped. 1) U.S. production is far in excess of domestic need. Contraction of the U.S. production lndustry is necessary. 2) Canadian and Australian supply is optional and not essential. Producers in those countries are expanding mainly by displacing higher cost production and not because they fill a void, 3) Prices may be essentially stable for some time. 4) Enriched uranium is in excess supply. That is 1981. 1982 is shaping up to look like this: 1) Prices will have bottomed out. (That is not Nuexco's opinion necessarily, by the way, but it is my opinion.) 2) There will still be substantial utility inventories, but fewer spot sales. 3) Canadian and perhaps Australian sellers will have made substantial sales in the U.S. and will be aggressively seeking more. 4) U.S. production will have been dramatically curtailed. U.S. utilities that wish to con- tract long term will have difficulty in finding domestic sellers. Concern will develop about the availability of U.S. production capability. Virtually all long term con- tracts signed will be with non-U.S. sellers. 5) An awareness will begin to develop among U.S. buyers that we are approaching a period of dependence upon foreign uranium (which will be true). The history of the uranium market has been one of dramatic changes and overreaction to those changes. The rapid price rise of a few years ago generated excess U.S. production capacity and the rapid price drop of the last two years will almost certainly result in too little capacity. It will soon be difficult for U.S. buyers to buy domestic material except on the spot market. The question is, "will they care?" The lack of demand, of course, is the underlying reason for the current poor health of the uranium industry. In 1972, 1973 and 1974 collectively, there were 105 nuclear reactors ordered in the U.S. That ordering rate was expected to continue and accelerate throughout this century. In 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1980 altogether, there were 56 more reactors cancelled than ordered. The net growth of our only customer since 1974 has been a negative 56. TO put this in perspective, if these 56 reactors were operating now it would more than double present U.S. uranium consumption. Underlying lack of demand is something that is simply not going to change in this decade. Time is going to be required. The NRC indicates that the maximum feasible number of new reactors that can be licensed each year is six. That would increase uranium consumption by only 10% per year. New reactors, if ordered tomorrow, would not generate new uranium demand until after 1990. Even so, United States' consumption of uranium will rise from the 1980 level of 18 million pounds per year, to

H. A. BUEHLER, Rolla, Mo. -I consider the lead .and zinc deposits of the Mississippi Valley to be the result of descending waters. There are many features that we have not determined and yet when you see the general field relations, it seems to me that the cause and effect can be well explained by descending circulation. In the Joplin-Miami district, for instance, the ore deposits are connected with openings or with old cavity fillings which have a direct connection downward from the surface to practically 300 ft. In the Miami camp, in the western part of the field, some of the deepest orebodies are directly connected with water, channels; the same condition has been obvious and always present with the shallower ores. I speak of one deposit that I have examined more thoroughly than any other in that district, the Admiralty property, which contains large openings or caves at the deepest levels. It seems to me that waters which would pass upward through 1800 ft. of dolomite would be saturated with lime and magnesia so far as the carbon dioxide of those waters would dissolve them, and therefore, on

INTRODUCTION Rock mechanics engineers are seldom concerned with obtaining the tensile or fracture strength of brittle rock at low mean stresses. The reason for this is two fold. Firstly, the behavior of many excavations in brittle rock is controlled by the inherent discontinuities in the rock mass. Because of the jointing and faulting, tensile strength is usually taken to be negligible. The second reason that tensile strength is seldom obtained in the laboratory is that the technology of utilizing this strength measure in design is undeveloped. Despite the fact that tensile strength of brittle rock is often ignored, there are a number of applications in rock mechanics wherein the knowledge of tensile strength is of fundamental importance. The apparent tensile strength must be known in a hydraulic fracture experiment if the state of in situ stress is to be determined from the initiation of the hydraulically induced fracture. In certain underground situations, the apparent tensile strength of intact rock beams defined by jointing or bedding planes is important in determining required rock bolting. Numerous other situations require a knowledge of apparent tensile strength including such high technology uses of underground space as geothermal energy extraction and LPG storage. Three observations are invariably made when intact rock samples are taken into the laboratory and tested to determine tensile strength. The terms asphalt and bitumen have been applied interchangeably, although incorrectly on occasion, for centuries to various bituminous materials that were found in nature. Native bituminous materials of only the solid types, deposits of which are found on or near the surface of the ground, together with the principal asphaltic type petroleum bitumens will be considered in this chapter. The international dictionary compiled by the "Permanent International Association of Road Congresses" still gives the full name as "Asphaltic Bitumen" but of recent years the word "Bitumen" has been recognized as most appropriate and is defined by the American Society for Testing Materials as follows: "Mixtures of hydrocarbons of natural or pyrogenous origin, or combinations of both, frequently accompanied by their nonmetallic derivatives, which may be gaseous, liquid, semisolid or solid and which are completely soluble in carbon disulfide." Asphaltic pyrobitumens, as defined by Abraham,2 is a species of pyrobitumen, including dark-colored, comparatively hard and nonvolatile solids; composed of hydrocarbons, substantially free from oxygenated bodies; sometimes associated with mineral matter, the nonmineral constituents being infusible and largely insoluble in carbon disulfide. Deposits of native bituminous materials are found scattered over the entire world, but many are relatively unimportant as far as commerce is concerned. No attempt has been made to cover all of the known deposits. The principal bituminous materials of commercial interest are: 1. Native asphalts, solid or semisolid, associated with mineral matter such as Trinidad Lake asphalt, Rock asphalt and Selenitza, Boeton and Iraq asphalts. 2. Native Asphaltites, such as gilsonite, grahamite and glance pitch, conspicuous by their hardness, brittleness and comparatively high softening point. 3. Asphaltic bitumens obtained from nonasphaltic, semi-asphaltic and asphaltic crude petroleum by distillation, blowing with air and the cracking of residual oils. 4. Asphaltic pyrobitumens of which wurtzilite and elaterite are of chief interest industrially as they depolymerize upon heating, becoming fusible and soluble in contrast to their original properties in these respects.2 5. Mineral waxes, such as ozokerite, characterized by their high crystallizable paraffine content. Native Lake Asphalt At Brighton situated in the southwestern part of the Island of Trinidad is one of the largest deposits of native asphalt in the world.3 The lake is oval in shape, covering an area of 114 acres and having a depth of 285 ft at its center. The material forming this deposit is an emulsion of water and bitumen with a suspension of mineral matter consisting of impalpably fine clay dispersed by nature in the asphalt, and small quantities of silica and vegetable matter. This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling, and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environ¬mental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projections can then be made that will assist in the design of the toxic spoil package to limit the amount of ground water flowing through them.

The basalt in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, and augite to chorite. The most important host minerals for gold are the tellurides sylvanite and hessite. Next in importance the sulphide s, pyrite, marcasite and arseno-pyrite. A small amount of free gold also occurs. ACCORDING to statements by Guertler,1 Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the copper-titanium alloys, but owing to the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. M. A. Hunter and I. W. Bacon later investigated the electrical conductivity and the temperature coefficients at room temperature. The present writers reported their results2 in November, 1930. Recently Droll published data on copper-titanium alloys3 which agree closely with those obtained by the authors. MATERIAL TESTED The titanium used was in the form of square sintered rods, the analysis of which runs as follows: titanium, 95.4 per cent; silicon, 0.7; iron,1.8; aluminum, 1.4; copper, 0.1; manganese, 0.05. . The ingots were prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace in air atmosphere. Their analyses are given in Table 1. Up to 5 percent titanium the alloys could be forged. Above that amount they were red short and broke up easily. Owing to their rapid absorption of nitrogen and oxygen from the air, the alloys with the higher amounts of titanium tend to form surface films which greatly increase the casting difficulties, especially when small masses of metal are handled. It was, however, possible to prepare sound ingots up to 25 per cent titanium.

10.4-1. Load Design and Construction. Surface mine haulage roads are used for transporting raw products to the mine site, preparation plant, or loading facilities, and to provide personnel and equipment an access to the pits and mine area. All of the aspects of highway engineering, including minimum slope inclines, properly banked curves, and adequate drainage, must be followed to facilitate construction of safe and efficient haulage roads for fast and economical transportation of the mined product to its destination. By maintaining good haulage roads, both truck and equipment maintenance will be kept to a minimum, resulting in reduced mining costs and subsequently higher profits. [ ] There are several basic considerations in haulage road planning. Most important, one must follow all safety procedures in both design and construction of the roadway. A maximum effort should be made to follow current mining plans when laying out and planning haulage roads (aerial photographs can be extremely useful in planning and routing of roadways). Grades, road widths, and curves must be maintained within limits of present and/or planned haulage equipment specifications, since all these factors can limit speed, and hence production (Table 10.4-1).
