It is the purpose of this note to call attention to the circumstance complicating the attainment of uniform gas-liquid distributions in multi-phase flow systems, and especially in those of the so-called Hassler type.' Although the complication arises directly as a consequence of gas compressibility and the dependence of fluid distributions on interfacial curvature phenomena, little reference to the problem has yet appeared in the literature.' In fact, it is only the paper of Geffen et al.3 which gives any experimental evidence that a problem exists. On the other hand, previous authorsl,4,5 have made the tacit, albeit fallaceous assumption that uniform gas-liquid distributions automatically are established in linear flow systems by the expedient of maintaining the pressure gradients equal in the flowing gas and liquid phases. Such a device, it can be shown, will succeed only if the immiscible fluids are both equally compressible or both essentially non-compressible. Another necessary condition required before uniform fluid-fluid distributions can be achieved is that the porous matrix is isotropic. Uniform fluid saturation distribution conditions obtain in isotropic media only when the curvature of each interface of contact between wetting and non-wetting fluids is everywhere the same throughout the interspaces. This is a necessary condition which follows from the consideration that variation in interfacial curvature gives rise to finite capillary pressure gradients and therefore to variation in the saturation distribution. That this is not a sufficient condition follows from the consideration that hysteric possibilities allow for different saturations even though the capillary pressure gradient is zero. In any event, it will- be recalled that it is the intent in the Hassler scheme of relative permeability determination' to obtain initially (by the capillary pressure drainage or imhibition process) uniform conditions of fluid distribution in the core sample, and then to maintain this uniformity during mixture flow so that the resultant fluid mobilities which are calculated will refer to steady-state transfer under fixed conditions of uniform saturation. If the flowing fluids are incompressible, it is recognized that employment of the same value of the pressure gradient in each fluid will result in maintenance of the initially obtained condition of zero capillary pressure gradient. On the other hand, the consequence of gas compressibility is that the gradient in the gas pressure varies from point to point in the flowing stream. and since the pressure gradient in an incompressible liquid is constant it is thus impossible to maintain zero capillary pressure gradient during the simultaneous flow of gas-liquid mixtures. Therefore, one would expect to observe a variation in the gas-liquid saturation in the directions of the capillary pressure gradients, depending in magnitude on the particular way saturation changed with capillary pressure. In order to formulate the manner gas compressibility effects prevent the attainment of uniform gas-liquid distributions during mixture flow, consider a linear flow system of unit length. For the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wet-table plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to re-treat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both byproduct coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to 100 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands I in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within +0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the he sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to o. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼-in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

Engineering education for the mining industry has been undergoing a gradual change in recent years, to an extent that many employers may not realize. The result of this change is that the new graduate comes to his first employment with very little knowledge that is immediately valuable in operations. He is in fact, simply "half-baked" and needs much education on the job before his schooling will pay out in any significant way. To the employer who fails to recognize this, and fails to give the necessary training to finish the educational job, the modern graduate is likely to be unsatisfying. Moreover, the young fellow's future competence will be impaired. However, to the employer who assumes the educational burden, the effort should pay out as the half-baked products, after a few years, ought to be more useful than their predecessors and should have a greater potential to solve problems or cope with change. The reasons for this development are given below in the foreword to a questionnaire survey circulated by the SME Committee for On-the-Job Training.

Shales containing "kerogen," or bituminous matter, which on destructive distillation yield oily and tarry matters resembling petroleum are here designated as oil-shales. They differ from oil-bearing shales from which petroleum may be obtained by so-called mechanical means. The educts obtained by the destructive distillation resemble some or all the varieties of petroleum, depending on the character of the shale and the mode of treatment. Some shale oils have a paraffin base, some an asphaltic base, or a combination; some run high in sulfur compounds. The methods of refining and cracking, therefore, are essentially the same as are used in refining petroleums. In 1860, in this country, over fifty companies were successfully distilling various natural bituminous materials for the production of " coal oil," used for illuminating purposes. The discovery of petroleum and the failure of these companies to save and utilize the valuable byproduct, ammonia, brought about their inevitable doom. Prior to that time, more or less successful efforts were made to produce from the shales of Scotland oils for illuminating and heating purposes. Competition of native petroleum from the United States early eliminated some of these companies and with the entrance of oil from the Russian and other fields into the world's markets, the Scottish oil-shale industry underwent serious and trying experiences until, in 1916, only four (Scottish) were paying concerns. These survived only through energy and the application of skill in saving valuable byproducts. A few companies have successfully operated in France and New Zealand. The Canadian Government showed active interest in the New Brunswick shales, which exist in quantity and are more valuable than the Scottish shales. The retarded development of that valuable asset of the Province of New Brunswick was most unfortunate, especially when the product was so much needed in the prosecution of the war. PRACTICALLY all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatisfaction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage. It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called." contract" system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists.

A modelfor dilute quasi-regular interstitial solid solutions is proposed in which the solute atoms can occupy both the octahedral and tetrahedral interstices in the bee solvent lattice. The distribution function, according to which the solute atoms are apportioned between the two kinds of sites, is calculated. The partial thermodynamic functions of the solution are calculated from the distribution function. It is shown that such a solution model can explain the deviation from linearity of the Arrhenius plot of the temperature variation of the diffusivity of carbon through a iron. The published difiusivity data is analyzed to obtain numerical values for the distribution function. Finally it is shown from the numerical values of the distribution function that the possibility of dual-site occupancy will have a negligible effect on the solution thermodynamics for this system. DeSPITE the large amount of experimental data available on the thermodynamics and diffusion kinetics of dilute solid solutions of carbon in a iron, many of the elementary properties of these solutions are not understood due to real or apparent discrepancies in the experimental data. Basically there is a lack of agreement between the solubility and diffusion data obtained by anelastic damping techniques and by bulk chemical thermodynamic methods. SPecifically the heat of solution of cementite in ferrite estimated from thermodynamic measurement1, 2 is about twice as high as that determined from anelastic damping measurements.3 Furthermore the diffusion coefficient D of carbon in a iron in the range -40" to about 150°C (covering about ten orders of magnitude) determined from anelastic damping techniques is such that an Arrhenius plot of In D vs 1/T is linear. However in the range of about 300o to 850°C where mass flow measurements of D have been made (covering about four orders of magnitude), although the data merges with the low-temperature data, the Arrhenius plot departs from linearity. The object of this paper is to present a more refined model of dilute ferrite solutions in which the solute atoms can occupy two kinds of interstitial sites. The experimental data is analyzed in the light of this model and it is believed that thereby some of the anomalies can be resolved. snoek4 explained the room-temperature internal-friction peak (usually referred to as the Snoek peak) in iron as the stress-induced ordering of interstitial carbon and nitrogen atoms occupying the octahedral (0, 0, 1/2) interstices in the bee lattice. From the consideration of a hard-sphere lattice model the (0, 1/4, 1/4) tetrahedral interstices are larger than the octahedrons but their symmetry would not produce the strain dipole necessary to give rise to the Snoek peak. Thus the presence of the Snoek peak is direct evidence that the octahedrons are occupied. Since the publication of Snoek's explanation, most workers have assumed that all of the carbon and nitrogen in the a solid solution was located in the octahedral sites. A number of papers have appeared in the past several years concerning the nature of the fatigue limit. The hypotheses presented in those papers fall into three groups. Some authors attribute the fatigue limit to the distribution of interstitials prior to testing (static group). Others consider the fatigue limit to be due to dislocation-interstitial reactions during testing (dynamic group). Still other propose that the fatigue limit results from a characteristic peculiar to the iron (bee) lattice (inherent group). This communication is an attempt to digest the salient features of each of the hypotheses, discuss them, and present some constructive criticism. It is shown that each of the extant ideas has some merit, and that each of the mechanisms thus far proposed is necessary, but individually insufficient, to provide the desired level of understanding of the fatigue-limit behavior of metals. Static Group. The data of Oates and wilson1 on finegrained (=0.022 mm diam) low-carbon steel indicate that the fatigue limit exists in the absence of sufficient plastic deformation for any dynamic strain-aging mechanism to be operative. Specimens tested just below the fatigue limit showed yield-point behavior typical for unstrained material when removed from the fatigue machine and tested in tension. These results led them to the conclusion that initial dislocation locking controls the fatigue limit in this material, which has a yield stress higher than the fatigue-limit stress. Prestraining this material just prior to fatigue testing would be expected to lower the fatigue-limit stress; this they observed experimentally. THE thermal expansion characteristics of aluminum alloys have been examined by several investigators, among whom may be mentioned Shakespear,1 Schulz,2 Hidnert,3 Hidnert and Sweeney4 and McCullough.5 Shakespear compared the expansion of a series of aluminum alloys containing 14 per cent copper, with separate additions of about 1 per cent each of manganese, tin and zinc with that of pure copper. Schulz examined the expansion of aluminum and zinc and some aluminum-zinc alloys. Hidnert determined with a high degree of precision the expansion characteristics of pure aluminum, some aluminum-copper, aluminum-zinc, aluminum-silicon and some commercial alloys. Hidnert and Sweeney examined the expansion characteristics of aluminum-beryllium alloys. McCullough, by an interferometer method, determined the expansivity of some aluminum-copper, aluminum-magnesium, aluminum-iron, aluminum-nickel, aluminum-silicon and aluminum-manganese alloys. Incidental to an investigation carried out during the past six years and leading to the development and exploitation of an aluminum piston alloy of relatively low thermal expansivity, the expansion characteristics of a wide variety of alloys were examined. Some of the data which might be of general interest are gathered in this paper.

There are two topics which may be considered as opening gambits in any conversation in any part of the world, weather and health. Nothing much can be done about the former, and it would appear that no great changes can be anticipated in the immediate future. With respect to health, a great deal has been achieved in the past 150 years, curiously enough not all of it by medical men. It would appear that the time is now appropriate for geologists to come to the assistance of medical men. During the past few decades, medical science has mastered many of the diseases commonly associated with childhood. As a man tends to live longer, those diseases usually associated with middle and old age become more prominent. Thus we must realize when we say that today more people are dying of cancer and coronary disease, absolutely and relatively to other diseases, this should not suggest that these diseases did not exist a hundred years ago; it does suggest that more people are living to an age where death from these diseases is apt to become more common.

The suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material. Adventitious Mineral Matter When a determination of calorific value, for example, is made upon a coal, it is customary to correct the measured value with respect to the ash left by the coal on incineration, recording the result as being on an "ash-free basis." It is desirable, before discussing the adequacy of the correction thus made, to demonstrate its validity, which turns on whether the ash is present as an adventitious impurity in the coal and forms no part of the coal substance itself. The inorganic matter associated with coal has originated in several ways1: 1. The "inherent" inorganic materials, occurring as constituents of the plants from which the coal-forming deposits were derived.

The scaling laws as formulated by Rapoport relate dynamically similar flow systems in porous media each involving two immiscible, incompressible fluids. A two-dimensional numerical technique for solving the differential equations describing systems of this type has been employed to assess the practical value of the scaling laws in light of the virtually unscalable nature of relative permeability and capillary pressure curves and boundary conditions. Two hypothetical systems — a gas reservoir subject to water drive and the laboratory scaled model of that reservoir — were investigated with emphasis placed on water coning near a production well. Comparison of the computed behavior of these par ticular systems shows that water coning in the reservoir would be more severe than one would expect from an experimental study of a laboratory model scaled within practical limits to the reservoir system. This paper also presents modifications of the scaling laws which are available for systems that can be described adequately in two-dimensional Cartesian coordinates. INTRODUCTION Present day digital computing equipment and methods of numerical analysis allow realistic and quantitative studies to be carried out for many two-phase flow systems in porous media. Before these tools became available the anticipated behavior of systems of this type could be inferred only from analytical solutions of simplified mathematical models or from experimental studies performed on laboratory models. To reproduce the behavior of a reservoir system on the laboratory scale, certain relationships must be satisfied between physical and geometric properties of the reservoir and laboratory systems. Where the reservoir fluids may be considered as two immiscible and incompressible phases, the necessary relationships have been formulated by Rapoportl and others.2-5 Rapoport's scaling laws follow from inspectional analysis of the differential equation describing phase saturation distribution in such systems. It will be recalled that these scaling laws presuppose three conditions: (1) the relative permeability curves must be identical for the model and prototype; (2) the capillary pressure curve (function of phase saturation) for the model must be linearly related to that of the prototype; and (3) boundary conditions imposed on the model must duplicate those existing at the boundaries of the prototype. These three requirements seldom if ever can be satisfied in scaling an actual reservoir to the laboratory system because: (1) The laboratory medium normally will be unconsolidated (glass beads or sand) while the reservoir usually is consolidated. Relative permeability and capillary pressure curves are usually quite different for consolidated and unconsolidated porous media. (2) The reservoir usually will be surrounded by a large aquifer which could be simulated in the laboratory only to a limited extent. (3) Wells present in the reservoir would scale to microscopic dimensions in the laboratory if geometric similarity is to be maintained. In view of these considerations, rigorous scaling of even a totally defined reservoir probably would never be possible. The purpose of this paper is to assess the practical value of the scaling laws in the light of the unscalable variables. This has been done by carrying out numerical solutions in two dimensions to the differential equations describing the flow of two immiscible, incompressible fluids in porous media for a field scale reservoir and a laboratory model of that reservoir. While both the reservoir and the laboratory model were purely fictional, each has been made as realistic and representative as possible. The field problem selected as the basis for the investigation was an inhomogeneous, layered gas reservoir initially at capillary gravitational equilibrium and subsequently produced in the presence of water drive. The laboratory model of this reservoir was designed to utilize oil and water in a glass bead pack. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. THE purpose of this paper is to describe the installation of the pumping station on the 3314-ft. level of the Carlos Francisco mine of the Sociedad Minera Backus y Johnston del Peru, at Casapalca, Peru. However, so much preliminary work was necessary before the actual installation could be started that some of that work will be described briefly, in order to clarify the discussion of the main subject. The Sociedad Minera Backus y Johnston del Peru, a subsidiary of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation, owns and operates a group of mines in the Casapalca district, of which the most important are the Carlos Francisco and the Aguas Calientes. These two mines, one mile apart, are connected on their 2100 and 2700-ft. levels. These are motor-haulage levels, equipped with 3 ½ -ton Baldwin-Westinghouse locomotives operating from a 260-volt d.c. overhead trolley. A 38-cu. ft. hopper-bottom car is used. Each mine has a 2 ½ -compartment, inclined (70°) winze shaft. The Aguas Calientes shaft, operating between its 2100 and 2900-ft. levels, is used only for men and materials; whereas the Carlos Francisco shaft, between the 1700 and 2700-ft. levels of that mine, is the main operating shaft for the district. All the ore from the Carlos Francisco and the Aguas Calientes mines is hoisted through the Carlos Francisco shaft. The ore produced in these mines is by-passed to the 2700-ft. level, where it is gathered by the electric trains, taken to the Carlos Francisco shaft and dumped into an ore pocket in front of the shaft. The ore is hoisted to the 1700-ft. level in 2-ton self-dumping skips and emptied into a 150-ton loading pocket. There it is loaded into electric trains and despatched to the concentrator through the Backus and Johnston tunnel, which is the main entry from Casapalca to all the mines in the Backus and Johnston group. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM In 1934 the following development program was outlined for the Carlos Francisco and the Aguas Calientes mines: (1) to deepen the Carlos Francisco shaft from the 2700 to the 3400-ft. level, (2) to deepen the Aguas Calientes shaft from the 2900 to the 3300-ft. level, and (3) to connect the two shafts on the 3300-ft. level with a motor-haulage crosscut. Each mine was to be developed also on intermediate levels (2900 and 3100). The three levels were to be spaced 54 meters (177 ft.) floor to floor, measuring from the 2700-ft. level along the incline of the shaft. The Carlos Francisco mine, together with the section between it and the Aguas Calientes mine, produces 10,000 gal. of water per minute. A fault to the north

Experiments on latent hardening were peyformed by compressing single crystals along a direction perpendicular to the tension axis. The slope and length of easy glide in the tension test were found to depend only on prior deformation in the same slip plane. Prior deformation on a different slip plane changes the stress level of the resulting stress-strain curve. The yield points appearing upon reloading after prior extension and unloading were related to the end of easy glide. SEVERAL researchers have studied the latent hardening due to deformation of a crystal by slip on a slip System after prior deformation. These experiments can be divided into those in which the prior deformation was on the same plane as the subsequent and those in which the two deformation processes were in different planes. In the former category are the experiments of Buckley and Entwistle,1 Parker and washburn,2 and Haasen and Kelly.3 The latter case has not been studied systematically; it was the main purpose of this investigation to produce this type of latent hardening and explain the results in terms of the existing theories of work hardening. In general, tension producing slip on a certain slip system can be preceded by tension, transverse compression or longitudinal compression, each with predictable dislocation movement and intersection. The intersection of dislocations can lead to glissile or sessile jogs, Cottrell-Lomer locks and other sessile dislocations. The effect on the stress-strain curve could depend on which combination of the former mechanisms is operating. Haasen and Kelly3 have studied the yield points which occur in aluminum and nickel single crystals upon reloading after prior unloading in a tension experiment. They attributed this effect to the anchoring of dislocations occurring during unloading. As Cottrell and stokes4 have shown that dislocations cutting through the "forest" could only lead to reversible changes, they attributed the anchoring to the formation of sessile dislocations during unloading. However, different kinds of sessile dislocations could be formed during unloading, and it was the purpose of this experiment to determine whether Cottrell-Lomer locks are responsible for the yield effect and for the end of easy glide. The case where a longitudinal compression is followed by tension along the same axis is commonly referred to as a Bauschinger test. This type of effect was studied by Buckley and Entwistle1 on aluminum single crystals and by Parker and washburn2 on zinc single crystals. In such a test, the tension and the compression activate the same slip plane with opposite slip directions. The use of sideways compression in the present experiments permits the activation of different types of slip systems and the study of their effect on the easy glide region and on the transition between the elastic and easy glide region. The theory of seeger5 for the flow stress in fee materials is applied to explain the latent hardening. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE All the single crystals used in this investigation had an axial orientation close to <210>, called the "0.5" orientation. This is the orientation for which the tensile axis is 45 deg from both the slip plane and the slip direction. The single crystals were grown from the melt under a helium atmosphere using milled graphite boats,=at a rate of 8.6 mm per min. The silver used in the experiment was 99.98 pct pure. The single crystals had a square cross section about 0.9 by 0.9 cm and a length of 14 cm. The orientation of the specimen was determined within ±2 deg by the Laue back-reflection method. The specimens were annealed at 940&apos; ± 2°C in a helium atmosphere for 24 hr and then furnace cooled over a period of 7 hr. The specimens were electropolished in a solution of 9 pct KCN in water. The specimens were tested in a soft-type tensile machine (the load is prescribed) up to 3 pct strain. The stress was increased continuously at approximately 30 g per mm2 per min. The strain was measured over a 5 cm gage length with a mechanical extensometer employing an optical lever. The strain and stress were measured with accuracies of i 2 X 10-5 and ± 2 g per mm2, respectively. The remainder of the stress-strain curve up to 20 pct strain was obtained in a hard-type tensile machine (the strain rate is prescribed). The strain and the stress were measured in that machine with an accuracy of ±2 pct. The compression tests were performed in the hard-type machine using accurately machined steel blocks without lubrication. The blocks were used so as to apply a uniform compression over a length of 13 cm. The strains were measured on the hard-type machine and with a micrometer.
