In a recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchlerl gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. Six years of laboratory study, followed by three years of mill operation treating more than 10,000 tons of ore, have established the flotation of oxidized zinc ores with fatty amines as an efficient process. Recently the method has been applied with success to partially oxidized sulphide ores. In this paper the authors give an account of their research and the milling results obtained in Sardinia since 1951. CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite. It is well known' that smithsonite can be collected with fatty acids, but as the predominant gangue constituents, limestone and dolomite. are floatable with the same reagents, fatty acids are difficult to use. Gaudin has shown,' on mixture of pure minerals, that smithsonite can be floated with higher xanthates, or better, with higher mercaptans. Another procedure, briefly mentioned by Davis," consists in sulphidizing the ore, activating the zinc carbonate with copper sulphate, and floating with ordinary xanthates. This process was attempted in the writers' laboratory in 1946, but results were erratic. It has since been taken up by Italian engineers and is in operation on certain types of ores. Two other research projects should be mentioned. In 1942 Erlenmeyer and others' floated synthetic mixtures of smithsonite and gangue minerals with hydroxyquinoline, an analytical reagent for zinc. On the other hand, Bunge, Fine, and Legsdin published in 19465 Some interesting results obtained on Missouri oxidized zinc ores. With sodium oleate as a collector and a combination of sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, and citric acid as a limestone depressor, they secured, after four cleaning operations, a good grade of concentrate. With many ores this reagent combination lacks adequate selectivity. In 1939 M. Rey initiated a program of research on this important problem. Work was pursued first at the School of Mines in Liége, Belgium"' and later in Paris in the laboratories of Société Miniére et Mbtallurgique de Penarroya and Société Minerais et Métaux. Reagents used in the beginning were higher xanthates and mercaptans, later fatty amines. Sulphidization with sodium sulphide was found necessary. These conditions make possible the flotation of zinc carbonate and zinc silicate. Two milling plants were put in operation in Sardinia in 1950 and several others are now contemplated." INTRODUCTION ACID mine-water drainage is a serious problem with many mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district. Particularly is this true when large volumes must be considered in unwatering old mines that have refilled with water which has dissolved the products of oxidation and has become chalybeate in character. The experiences discussed in this paper have to do specifically with the unwatering of a comparatively small area west of the town of Baxter Springs, Kans., where the pumping job was complicated by water of this type and where the extremely high sulphate content particularly effected that phase of mine drainage having to do with stream pollution. LOCATION, GEOLOGY AND HISTORY The Baxter Springs area of the Tri-State mining field is situated just west of the town of Baxter Springs and is a northeasterly extension of the main mineralized zones of the Oklahoma part of the district (Fig I). The mining area is traversed with well defined shear zones which provide easy circulation of ground waters and the ore bodies are found along these shear zones as localized enrichments wherever the structural conditions are favorable (Fig 2). The ore-bearing strata is Mississippian with an overlain capping of shale of Pennsylvanian age. This shale strata carries much pyrite and marcasite at its base and undoubtedly was a contributing factor to the subsequent high iron content of the water. The area originally contained a sulphide water which discharged as an artesian flow in springs within the town and gave Baxter Springs its name. These springs were famed for many years for their mineral water. This original sulphide water was first removed about 1917 and active mining was carried on west of the town during subsequent high metal price periods. Many small mines were opened, with each localized enrichment becoming a separate mine. During the depression mining ceased and all mines in the west Baxter area were allowed to flood. No serious effort was made to again unwater until higher prices caused from the demand for metal for World War II once more focused attention on this part of the field. ORIGINAL MINING RESULTS IN OXIDATION As plans for unwatering progressed, it soon developed that the mine-water pools had become strongly acid in character and carried large amounts of sulphates in solution. This occurred in the following way. When the original sulphide water was removed, shafts sunk, and mining carried on over a number of years, ferrous sulphate was formed by the spontaneous oxidation of the pyrite beds in contact with air admitted through churn-drill holes and mine openings. These products of oxidation can be seen today in the old mines of the district as crusts of crystalline sulphates

Basic procedures in the mining industry have changed only slightly over the centuries since metals and fossil fuels became an essential part of man's economic and cultural life. Mining techniques of the 20th century bear a close resemblance to those of the ancients: exploration, ore breakage and removal, hoisting, and processing. The great advances, however, have been in equipment and machinery of greater size and speed which allow greater efficiency in each of these operations, with a corresponding reduction in manpower requirements. Yesteryear production was measured in pounds per man-day; today a giant and complex, but highly efficient, continuous mining machine can remove as much as eight tons of material a minute from the coal face. If our energy and metal demands of the future are to be met, and at this time it can be assumed that coal will continue to supply a significant part of the energy demand, other dramatic and spectacular technologic advances must be accomplished. Along with mechanization, however, public policy will require the industry to place greater emphasis on health and safety protection, as has been well demonstrated by recent actions of Congress. Together, fossil fuels and metals formed the basis for the industrial revolution-coal to develop power and metals to transform power into useful energy. Strangely enough, however, the mining industry the world over has lagged behind the continuous social changes brought on by the industrial revolution, such as preventive health and industrial hygiene services, and other programs directed to the well-being of the worker. In some countries this resistance, to change may have led in part to the nationalization of the coal industry. Whether this disinclination to social change in the industry of the United States reflects managerial attitudes, inept labor leadership, government neglect, or economic relationship would be the subject of an interesting study. Doubtless the mores of miners and their resistance to change, as well as their geographic isolation from other industrial groups, may have had a strong influence on these factors. In every major coal mining country the accident rate in the coal industry is substantially higher than other industrial groups, and the cost of pneumoconiosis compensation in some countries is greater than the combined costs for all other occupational diseases from all other industries. The high social cost of occupational accidents and diseases may have been a factor in the closing of the industry in at least two countries. Despite diminishing manpower needs, the industry is faced with critical manpower shortages. Miners once reared their sons to be miners; now it appears that the opposite is true. The information which is required for' a preliminary feasibility study and the additional information which is required for the final feasibility study on a new mineral deposit are discussed. The preliminary feasibility study is made from very little information and at a minimum cost to the owner. However, the outline for the preliminary report is similar to the one used in the final report. In this manuscript, it is assumed that the results from the preliminary study are favorable and the owner authorizes a final feasibility study by an outside engineering company. The type of organization for completing this final feasibility study is described. The final reports includes all information and data relative to this new mineral deposit. This information is presented so that it may be understood by financial people as well as by technical people.

The published phase diagrams for the copper-zirconium system1,2 indicate that the solid solubility of zirconium in copper is not accurately known. Studies made on relatively impure alloys by Pogodin, Shumova, and Kugucheva3 yielded a maximum solubility value of 1 wt pct Zr at the eutectic temperature. Allibone and sykes5 reported that an as-cast 0.2 wt pct Zr alloy is single phase at room temperature. Limited results obtained by Raub and Enge14 indicated that zirconium solubility in copper is less than 0.13 wt pct Zr at 940°C. Tn 1960, on the basis of a microstructural examination of several copper-rich Cu-Zr alloys, saarivirta6 placed the maximum solubility of zirconium in copper at 0.15 wt pct at the eutectic temperature, 980°C. The present note describes results obtained during a re-investigation of the Cu-Zr system for the purpose of accurately establishing the solidus and solvus curves and the eutectic temperature in copper-rich alloys. High-purity copper (99.99 pet) and zirconium (99.64 pet) consolidated reactor grade sponge were used to prepare several alloys, containing up to 2 wt pct Zr, by induction melting in graphite crucibles in vacuum and chill casting into a split steel mold. The melting procedure consisted of first melting the copper charge and then adding the bulk zirconium wrapped in pure copper foil. Chemical analyses were made of both the cold-rolled alloy ingots after homogenization at 925°C for 450 hr in evacuated quartz capsules and of small specimens which had been used in the phase diagram studies. 'The carbon content of each alloy was also determined and was found to be less than 0.001 wt pct in every case. Metallographic and electrical resistivity measurements were used as the primary methods for this investigation, although some thermal analysis studies were also performed. Heat treatments of all the alloys were carried out with the specimens wrapped in molybdenum or alloy foil (of the same composition as the specimen) and sealed in quartz tubes either in vacuum or under a purified helium atmosphere. Following high-temperature anneals for long periods of time, slight depletion of zirconium from the specimen surface was observed. Therefore, careful preparation of samples for microscopic examination and chemical analysis of the samples themselves was necessary to check the composition of samples used in determining phase boundaries. Points on the solvus curve were determined on quenched specimens by both isothermal reaction after solution heat treatment at 950°C for 8 hr and by isothermal annealing of alloy specimens at successively higher temperatures for times ranging from 24 to 500 hr. Networks of resistors are used as analog computers to obtain relative permeability and resistivity index curves for networks of tubes. These curves have all of the characteristics of those obtained on porous media and, therefore demonstrate the validity of the network of tubes model. INTRODUCTION In paper I' of this series the network model was shown to give information on the structure of porous media that could not be obtained from the bundle of tubes model. The agreement between the capillary pressure characteristics of a network of tubes and those of typical porous media does not prove the validity of the network made. The bundle of tubes model, although it gives less information, also shows this agreement. In this paper the flow properties of a network of tubes are shown to be in agreement with flow properties of porous media. The flow properties of the bundle of tubes model are not in adequate agreement with those of porous media. The dynamic properties of porous media, such as fluid permeability and electrical conductivity, have been found experimentally to be more sensitive functions of structure and pore size distribution than are the static properties such as porosity and capillary pressure characteristics. The network model can, therefore, be best tested by comparing the dynamic properties of a network of tubes with the observed properties of porous media. All static and dynamic properties of a completely valid model must agree with the observed properties. The most commonly measured sensitive dynamic properties are the relative fluid permeability and the relative electrical resistivity. Experimental measurements of these dynamic properties on sandstone, sintered glass, sintered alumina, and soil are reported in the petroleum and soil science literature. These properties were chosen, therefore, for the test of the network model. In the network model, relative permeability is the permeability of the network when some of the tubes are not conducting fluid, relative to the permeability when all tubes are conducting fluid. Similarly, the relative resistivity is the electrical resistivity of the network of tubes when some of the tubes are filled with a nonconductor. relative to the resistivity when all tubes are filled with the electrical conducting fluid. Single Size Tube Network The simplest porous medium is one in which all pores are of the same size. Such media can be approached by packing beds or columns of uniform size particles of sand, glass, or metal. The model of such medium in this study is a network of single size tubes. The rate of dissolution of alumina in carbon-saturated liquid iron has been studied experimentally in a system where alumina was in the form of a cylindrical rod immersed in an iron bath contained in a graphite crucible. Data obtained consisted of the concentrations of aluminum in the melt as a function of time. In the case of static experiments, the data are shown to agree with theoretical prdictions based on the diffusion of aluminum.. The rate of dissolution was greatly increased by the rotation of the alumina rod. It is concluded that the diffusion of aluminum from the alumina/metal interface is the rate-controlling step. In the past, thermodynamic investigations of systems encountered in ferrous process metallurgy have received widespread attention. More recently, considerable work has been devoted to the study of kinetics associated with these systems in an effort to determine their rate controlling mechanisms. The alumina-iron system is of great importance in ferrous metallurgy. Yet information concerning kinetics of reaction in this system is seriously limited. The present study was made in order to establish the rate-controlling step for dissolution of solid alumina in liquid iron. LITERATURE REVIEW A number of papers concerning dissolution of solid metals in liquid metals have been reported in the literat~re. Generally, for these simple systems, dissolution is controlled by mass transfer of the dissolving species. Complex systems involving dissolution of solid metal carbides and oxides in liquid metals and slags have been studied to a much lesser extent. Skolnick5,6 reported on the reaction between liquid cobalt and poly-crystalline cylinders of tungsten carbide, in which the cylinders were dissolved while being rotated about their longitudinal axes at various speeds and temperatures. As a result of unexpected preferential grain boundary attack by the liquid cobalt, large errors in the measured dissolution rates occurred because of loss of tungsten carbide grains to the liquid cobalt. Nevertheless, it was possible to establish that the liquid Co-W carbide reaction was not controlled by mass transfer. In a similar approach, cooper7 was able to show that artificial sapphire rods, (alumina single crystals) dissolving in lime-alumina-silica slags obeyed a mechanism of mass transfer control. Here, again, the rods were rotated at various speeds and temperatures, and the process was followed as a function of these variables. Forster and Knacke8 took a practical approach to reaction between slags and refractories. By blowing argon through refractory cylinders of silica, silli-manite, or dolomite and directing the gas to rise along the slag-refractory interface, it was possible to increase the rate of mass transfer. Although the method was admittedly crude, it nevertheless permitted an evaluation of the relative stabilities of refractories with respect to slag attack. Data were interpreted on the basis of mass transfer control. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Apparatus. An illustration of the apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace consisted of a Morganite recrystallized alumina tube wound with a molybdenum coil. A secondary molybdenum heater was mounted around the upper half of the primary coil to aid in controlling the thermal gradient within the furnace. The primary heater tube was 3 in. in ID and 30 in. long. A reducing mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H was maintained around the heating elements. Thermal insulation was provided by alumina powder. The chamber within the primary combustion tube contained a boron nitride block near the top to assist in controlling the thermal gradient to the furnace and also to provide a bearing surface for the rotating graphite shaft. The outside diameter of the graphite shaft was $ in. A separate threaded graphite specimen holder was screwed into the end of the shaft. The holder contained a tapered hole drilled into the end to guide the oxide specimens as they were pressed into it for mounting. Additional guidance for the rotating graphite shaft was furnished by a water-cooled bronze bushing attached to the top of the furnace. A steel clamp was fastened to the upper end of the graphite shaft and rested on a thrust bearing; the shaft and clamp were driven by a dc motor through a set of gears. Two O-rings located immediately above the bronze bushing maintained a gas-tight seal about the graphite shaft. The lower half of the alumina tube housed the crucible and charge, which were placed on a 3/4-in. diam movable alumina support tube. With this arrangement, charges could be inserted into or removed from the furnace while the hot zone was maintained at or above 1000°C. To control the temperature of the furnace, the thermocouple was mounted inside the support tube and in contact with the crucible bottom. Stray electric fields in the furnace were of sufficient intensity to cause erratic indications by the thermocouple. By enclosing the thermocouple protection tube in a molybdenum sheath and grounding this shield, the problem was eliminated. Output of the thermocouple went to an automatic continuous balance controller. Procedure. A typical run was as follows. IT is popular today to dramatize in a journalistic spirit, some particular factor among the causes of unemployment. Naturally the time chosen for such emphasis is usually when the factor in question is temporarily a particularly active one. A few months ago, in the unemployment then current, we saw largely the results of a healthy acceleration in changes in processes, greater efficiency, a more intensified use of labor-saving devices, perhaps also a change in products. So we have been hearing a great deal about the influence of mechanization on unemployment, the so-called technological unemployment. Many talk as if this kind of unemployment were a wholly new phenomenon, for- getting that it is a constant process in a growing industrialism, though it sometimes becomes more pronounced. At other times one would think that seasonal unemployment is the only type of unemployment, and then again the fashion changes and we hear .about nothing except cyclical unemployment. Every few years there seems to be a different fashion in labelling the germ supposed to be the cause of unemployment.

IN a previous study' of the carbide phase of chromium steels, it was shown that chromium carbide (Cr7C3) is a more stable carbide than cementite (Fe3C) at tempering temperatures above about 500°C. in quenched steels containing from about r1to 7.5 per cent chromium. Below this temperature the carbide phase was found to consist of cementite in all of the steels examined. In the present investigation it was found that a similar change in the carbide phase takes place in molybdenum and in chromium-molybdenum steels at approximately the same tempering temperatures. The approximate ranges of occurrence of the alloy carbides Cr7C3, Cr4C, and Mo2C have been determined in steels containing up to 5 per cent chromium, 1 per cent molybdenum and 0.60 per cent carbon. The experimental steels were made in small high-frequency furnaces from Armco ingot iron, low-carbon ferrochromium and calcium molybdate and were poured into 2-in. ingots, which were forged to 1-in. round bars. Sections of the bars were heated to the carbide-solution temperature and cooled rapidly to induce austenite transformation at relatively low temperatures. The steels were subject to some segregation, therefore comparatively high temperatures were necessary to dissolve all of the carbides. The microstructure of the quenched specimens was examined to verify the belief that the carbides had been dissolved, and also to determine the nature of the nonmartensitic structure of incompletely hardened steels. Ferrite and pseudomartensite were present in some of the specimens, but all specimens were quenched at such a rate that pearlite was not formed, in order to ensure the formation of the carbides at temperatures lower than about 500°C. It had been found previously' that in chromium steels the chromium carbide could be produced by transformation of austenite in the pearlite range above 500°C., and, in order to start the tempering treatment with the carbide present as cementite, the absence of pearlite was considered to be essential. The specimens were tempered for 64 hr. to permit the formation of the stable carbide. After tempering, the specimens were submitted to microscopic and X-ray examination. The carbides were separated either electrolytically in a 5 per cent HCl electrolyte or with an acidified copper-potassium chloride solution. The crystal structure of the carbide phases was determined by the Debye-Scherrer type of X-ray patterns. The X-ray patterns obtained from specimens near the boundaries between two types of carbides were generally weak and diffuse as compared with the other patterns. For this reason, and because the more soluble components may be masked, the boundaries between the phases could not be determined precisely. DURING the past twenty years, a considerable background of knowledge has been built up on the chemical behavior of oxygen in liquid iron. Little is known regarding oxygen in liquid nickel or the effect of nickel as an alloying element on the behavior of oxygen in liquid steel. The solubility of oxygen in liquid iron was determined by Fetters and Chipman' and, more precisely, by Taylor and Chipman.' The Ni-NiO eutectic was placed by Merica and Waltenberg"' * at 1438°C and 0.24 pct 0, and this point has been confirmed by others." O It was reported by von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT that nickel and its oxide are miscible in all proportions at 1600°C, but this report is discredited by observations of others. The melting point of NiO according to von Wartenberg and ReuschV s 1990°C. Approximate values of oxygen solubility at several temperatures were reported by Hensel and Sc0tt.O The data of Krupowski and Balickil0 are inconsistent with those of Hensel and Scott and indicate a solubility less than half that found in the present study. For oxygen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys under pure iron oxide-nickel oxide slags, only the scattered data of von Bohlen und Halbach and LeitgebelT are avail- able. The careful work of Bardenheuer and Brauns" involved silica-saturated slags. The equilibrium between Fe-Ni alloys and iron oxide-nickel oxide slags was studied by zur Strassenu and by Jander and Senf,u but no oxygen analyses were reported. Oxygen in Pure Nickel Apparatus and Nlethod: Samples were taken with a "Taylor sampler" from a bath of molten electrolytic nickel held under an air atmosphere in a magnesia-lined 30 lb induction furnace. Saturation of the melt with oxygen was effected partly by the addition of chemically pure black nickel oxide and partly by the air atmosphere. Samples were taken only when there was a clearly visible oxide phase present. To avoid contamination of this oxide phase, the silica-sheathed Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples, by means of which temperatures were measured, were immersed in the melt for the minimum time consistent with accurate reading. THERE are many kinds and varieties of earth* that are used for the loam compositions for making the moulds for casting bronze, brass, or other metals. Since this is a very necessary thing, you must try to have the best kind and one that resists the fire well. It must be disposed to receive the metals well, must make a neat casting, and must not shrink or break with cracks on drying or baking. Aside from actual trial, I believe that there is little that can help you, since the clay in itself has no color or [77] visible sign that I know of to show how satisfactory it is. Understand that their colors are no less varied than their natures, for, as you see, one is white, one black, one yellow, and another red. Perhaps none will show by its color that it is good for this work, yet it might also happen that all colors are good. But all that I can say about it is to show you by their effects how the good ones should be in their nature; and so by trial you will choose among those that come into your hands. All earths are either sandy or tufaceous, either argillaceous and lean or pasty with unctuous viscosity. The lean ones make the loam powdery and without toughness and hold together poorly by themselves when they are dry. The unctuous and viscous ones shrink and break. Becoming smaller by shrinking, they often twist the forms and they stick together badly. They swell up again in the fire and produce works that are neither exact-a nor neat. Therefore, the good ones must be those that are neither unctuous nor lean, neither wholly tender nor rough, and with a grain that is fine, without pebbles or shells. When applied to a work they easily dry out without fractures and, when dry, hold their own shape well. Above all they must resist the fire well. These are usually of a yellow or red color, but whatever their color may be, the color does not force me to say that the yellow are really better than the black, and the red than the white or gray. Their quality depends on what trial shows. Thus, to summarize, whenever you have to do this work, you must try to have the best clay that you can, because it is to be the foundation of

R. W. Jones (Senior Exploration Geologist, Standard Oil Co. of California, Box 250, Seattle, Wash.) -Mr. McRae6 and his colleagues are to be congratulated for providing a more coherent structural synthesis of the complex structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area, Cochise County, Arizona, than the "gigantic thrust breccia" concept of Gilluly. 4 However, a few problems of interpretation remain. It is the intent of this note to point out some of these problems, and, drawing on my own work in the area as well as the work of McRae6 and Gilluly, 4 to suggest some interpretations which differ from those previously published. GRAVITY SLIDES In an unpublished manuscript (Jones5) I previously argued that most of the complex structures in the Courtland-Gleeson area can be most reasonably interpreted in terms of gravity sliding caused by uplift and eastward tilting of Jurassic intrusives and associated Paleozoic rocks. Although the field work and drill hole data described by McRae6 provided excellent documentation for two important gravity slides, McRae6 interpreted the basic structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area in terms of major eastward directed thrusting. THE waters of many oil fields have been regarded as buried sea water which has been retained in the sediments since the time of their deposition. The preservation of connate water through geological time has seemed improbable to only a few geologists, but there is room for doubt that buried sea water could remain in the strata during their periods of deformation and during the many subsequent epochs of. the circulation of meteoric ground-water. Some have even suggested that the calcium chloride water in the deep mines of the Lake Superior region is ancient sea water buried in the Algonkian lavas, but it is hard to understand how such water could be derived from the highly sodic and sulphatic water of the sea. It would seem more plausible to connect the calcium chloride with the highly calcic magmas of the greenstones in which it is found. Chemical analyses of waters associated with oil differ widely from the composition of sea water, requiring extensive alteration of the latter, if the former is truly its derivative. The first notable difference is the general absence of sulphates from oil-field waters, but this has been explained satisfactorily through reduction by hydrocarbons and organic matter. Oil reduces sulphates with the production of hydrogen sulphide (or sulphur), water, and carbonates (or carbon dioxide). The second striking difference is in the high ratio of chlorine to sodium. An examination of the analyses of chloride waters from oil fields shows that they contain a large relative excess of chlorine over that in sea water. Moreover, there is difficulty in finding chemical reactions that are probable in nature, by which sea water could be converted into anything like the chloride waters of oil fields. In the latter a large part of the chlorine occurs as calcium acid magnesium chloride. This condition might be produced by the removal of sodium carbonate, which; however, cannot be precipitated in the presence of much calcium or, magnesium.

COLLIGAN*-I can best illustrate my opinions by drafting another five year plan (Table 2). This plan is set up following the same stipulations outlined by Dr. Behre, namely: (I) the student is preparing himself for commercial work as a mining geologist; (2) he is attending an institution with a sufficiently broad curriculum (that is, engineering school and mining school as well as liberal arts college) to furnish the courses listed; and (3) he is not planning to continue his studies through to a doctor's degree before going into commercial work. A comparison of my study plan (Table 2) and that submitted by Dr. Behre (Table I) will at once point up the basic similarity, due to the obvious fact that there are so many essential courses which must be included in any outline of study. However, a more detailed analysis will show up certain differences, which, in fact, are only certain refinements on Dr. Behre's program. These I plan to discuss in order of their importance. The first and most important change is the addition of 12 hr of optional subjects, making a total of 24 hr of optional subjects as against a total of 12 hr under Dr. Behre's schedule. This of course entails the elimination of certain courses, which I shall discuss later. However, I wish to make it clear that I suggest eliminating these courses not because I feel that they are unnecessary, but rather because I feel the optional courses are more necessary to the complete education of the individual. I appreciate that Dr. Behre recognizes the importance of the cultural side of education, but I take issue with his thesis that the student will get it without credit and in his spare time. I do not think that the average college student, and certainly not the college freshman, is mature enough to know what he needs and where to get it in his spare time. I think it must be "spoon-fed"; he must be oriented through specific courses. University life (or should I say "college life") is too full of athletics, fraternity activities, dances, "bull sessions," and countless other enjoyable distractions, all of which contribute to the "full man." I fail to see how the average young American male can possibly sandwich in a necessary complement of "cultural activities" in his spare time. Since these latter activities do not fall within the pattern set by the "group," and show less promise of immediate return in enjoyment, or increased social status on the campus, they are bound to suffer in competition with the more popular, "group" activities. No doubt much of the criticism levelled against arts colleges, namely, that the cultural courses are useless, is well taken, for the culture

The vapor pressure of zinc in equilibrium with solid ß AgZn alloys has been measured by the dew-point method. The thermodynamic activities of silver, and the molar heats of formation have been calculated. Similar measurements have been made for the ternary alloys formed by adding gold to AgZn. An apparent particle size effect has been observed for AgZn filings. The vapor pressure of zinc over filings is 15 to 20 pct higher than over the solid alloys. STATISTICAL methods have been used to inter pret the thermodynamic activities of the components of a solid solution in terms of average equilibrium atomic configurations. In some cases, the atomic arrangements can be measured by X-ray methods, and the results are usually expressed in terms of short range order parameters. Only in the cases of Cu³Au and AgAu have there been sufficient X-ray and thermodynamic data to verify the assumed correlation between the X-ray and the thermodynamic measurements. In Cu³Au the agreement is good; negative deviations from Raoult's law are observed and the number of Cu-Au nearest neighbor pairs predicted on the basis of the thermodynamic treatments agrees quite well with the number of such pairs observed by the X-ray methods. The ß brass alloys present a different set of conditions. The ordering is so rapid in these alloys that the disordered state cannot be retained on quenching. In contrast, the disordered state in CuAu is easily retained on quenching. On heating, the ordered ß brass loses its long range order continuously as the critical temperature is approached; in Cuau the order decreases slightly on heating and then drops discontinuously to zero at the critical temperature. These differences indicate that the short range order configurations in ß brass systems may be of a different character than in Cudu systems. However, X-ray measurements of local order cannot be made in the Cu-Zn alloys because of the similarity in scattering factors. The alloy AgZn is isomorphous with CuZn, however, and recent experiments have indicated that there is a good possibility of observing short range order in this system. Another complication arises in the case of ß AgZn. The disordered body-centered cubic structure exists above 280°C. On quenching from above this temperature an ordered structure of the cesium-chloride type is formed. On slow cooling, however, a complex hexagonal structure, the 3 phase, is produced; and if an ordered quenched alloy is reheated the phase begins to form above 80°C. It is thus difficult to study local order by X-ray methods in single crystals of AgZn since the C phase formed on heating does not necessarily return to a single crystal of the original orientation. The district of Catoree, San Luis Potosi, ranks among the first half-dozen silver-producing camps of Mexico. Mining has been more or less continuous there for 150 years. The large producing mines, Mapnni, Mazapil, Palomas, Musquiz, Minas Viejas, now for the most part idle or abandoned, are grouped around the head of two valleys: one, which drains to the west, falls 2000 ft. (610 m.) in 41/2 mi. (7.2 km.) between the main Catorce and the western foot of the range and is characterized by steep canon walls; the other, east of the main town of Catoree from which it is separated by a high divide, heads in a number of steep tributaries above the basin in which lies the town of Potrero and flows nearly north for 10 mi. (16 km.) to the northern base of the range; below Potrero, it has for the most part gently sloping valley walls and a broad valley floor. The Sierra Catorce is the highest range of the region, the summits reaching altitudes of over 11,000 ft. With the exception of a few cliffs of the erosion escarpment of the lower limestone and the canon walls below the main town of Catoree, which is the highest town in Mexico, the gently rounded slopes are characteristic of a maturely eroded mountain range composed of folded sedimentary rocks. As is usual in desert regions, the heavy-bedded limestones are the most resistant to crosivc forces. Folded into anticlines, they form the mountain ranges; and the intermontane valleys and basins, originally carved out of less resistant shales, clays, marls and sandstone?, are covered by debris forming a mantle with surface gradually rising upwards toward the hills. In time, the debris buries, in deposits formed from their own ruins, all but the highest summits of the original mountains: some of this region has already nearly reached this stage. Most of the debris is firmly cemented by calcium carbonate (caliche). Solution of the limestone by meteoric waters afforded the supply of lime carbonate, which has been redeposited upon evaporation of the waters as a cement binding the boulders, pebblcs, and finer detritus. According to tradition, the higher portions of the Sierra Catoree were forested with pines and cedars but none remain within the mining district, although cedar is found farther south in the range. A survey of the literature on bottom-cast practice gives but Scant information as to some of the real facts concerning this most int'eresting method of steel manufacture, and some of the information available is very misleading. An exceptionally good description of this met,hod of pouring or teeming is to be found in an English publication2 on the heterogeneity of steel ingots. Quoting from this paper: (a) With bottom teeming, the metal rises steadily and progressively in the mold with the minimum possible agitation, the main force of the stream coming from the ladle being broken down or retarded by the down gate or runner. Further, the stream of metal from the ladle, under these conditions of casting, is invariably maintained at a much more continuous rate and is steadier than with top teeming. (b) In view of the facts referred to in (a) it follows that with bottom teeming the metal is not exposed to atmospheric oxidation to anything like the same degree as with top teeming. In this paper it is intended to detail briefly some of the advantages of bottom-cast practice and to discuss the possibilities of iron-oxide control in the basic open-hearth furnace. A description of the type of charge, ingot rnold set-up, etc., is found in detail in an earlier paper.3 Design of Ingot Molds In any kind of steel manufacture, ingot-mold design is important. L. H. The nature of the forces that are important in producing the oil in the East Texas field and the manner in which these forces are affected by the rate of production have always been problems of outstanding interest. These questions are of great interest to the industry as a whole on account of the economic importance of the East Texas field and to the engineers in particular on account of the unique character and behavior of the field. Subsurface pressure data throughout the field have been collected systematically, so that a quite complete history of the reservoir pressures has been kept as the field has been developed and produced. Subsurface samples of the oil and gas have been taken and these have been examined to obtain data on the physical properties of the reservoir fluids under the actual conditions of temperature and pressure. All of these data have been valuable because they have afforded the basis for a careful study of the means by which the oil is produced. It is the purpose of this discussion first to point out several of the important facts revealed by the data mentioned and then to describe studies that have been made concerning the interpretation of these facts. Reservoir Pressure Data and Properties of Oil The reservoir pressure data on the East Texas field have shown conclusively that the pressures are readily affected by changes in the rate at which the field is produced. This can well be seen in Fig. 1, where the average reservoir pressures obtained from time to time are plotted with the daily production rates and the cumulative production of the field. It is noted that the average reservoir pressure has declined irregularly, depending upon the rate of production, from the estimated original value of 1625 Ib. per sq. in. to the value of 1228 lb. per sq. in. observed for Aug. 11,1934. The decline in pressure has been more rapid at the higher rates of production than at the lower rates. In contrast, the average reservoir pressure has increased, on several occasions, upon reduction of the withdrawal rate from a high value to a lower value. Floris Osmond, Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, born in Paris, March 10, 1849, died at Saint-Leu near that city, June 18, 1912. Taken suddenly ill with congestion of the brain while on his way from Paris to his home, he reached it in time to write on the typewriter his last wishes, one of which was that no biographical notice of his life should be published. Holding Osmond's memory sacred, as those who have known him will, is it our duty to conform with his desire ? Shall no mention be made in our Transactions of the beautiful life and great achievements of one of our most honored members? Is it not, on the contrary, incumbent upon us to disregard Osmond's instruction in this matter and to place on record our admiration for the nobility of his life, for his talents and for the importance of his work, that younger men may be inspired by it with a desire to be guided by worthy motives in the path of unselfish pursuits ? I cannot feel that in following this course I am disloyal to Osmond's memory and I am strengthened in this belief by the opinion of men of high honor whom I have consulted before undertaking the writing of this obituary notice. One of them, Professor Henry M. Howe, justifies my decision better than I could do it myself when he writes : " Let us look frankly at the matter. Here we have a most extraordinary life, a life of rare beauty and power of inspiration to the rest of mankind. In my opinion we should not deprive mankind of the stimulating influence of the example of M. Osmond simply because he shrank from publicity. Our young men see every day how greed and vulgar push succeed, and with what material rewards they are crowned. They see too rarely the more valuable crown which comes to self devotion. A permanent and public recognition of the beautiful qualities of Osmond's life cannot fail to appeal to the imagination of young men and to help to deflect them toward leading a noble rather than a sordid life. Therefore I feel that the Revue de Métallurgie and other bodies owe it to the public to give prominence to his career by means of biographical notices."
