A technique using propellants has been developed for producing multiple fractures about a wellbore. The use of propellants having a range of burn rates permits precise control of combustion gas release and thereby of borehole pressurization. The pressure rise- time is the key variable governing fracture behavior. The peak pressure attained is of secondary importance and appears to be a function of in situ stress and loading rate. The fracture geometry is governed by the in situ stresses and pressure risetimes. The major fractures occur along the principal planes of stress and along apparent planes of maximum shear stress.

A prospecting project for deep-seated sulphide ore bodies will be expensive and means a considerable economic risk. The high costs depend on the demand for extensive drilling. It is therefore important to find effective methods to estimate the outcome of different prospecting strategies. The results from a preliminary study of the possibility of using mathematical methods for this purpose are presented. We have found that mathematical methods, especially simulation technique, might be an important tool in such exploration work. A mathematical model of an ore field and of a drilling procedure has been constructed. A set of parameters describes the geometry, the size distribution and the intensity of ore bodies. Another set describes the geometry and the intensity of drill holes. Some preliminary results are given of Monte-Carlo simulations and probability calculations.

Data given in this paper indicate that certain relations exist between different characteristics of sandstone. These relations are not rigid, for all sandstones are more or less heterogeneous. Not every increment of a given horizon follows exactly the relationship; however, studying a reservoir as a whole from a large number of samples, definite trends are found to exist. Apparently nature's processes of sedimentation and diagenesis are such as to give some degree of uniformity. Average relationships are valuable because electrical measurements in a borehole comprise a considerable volume of rock near the hole. Also, it is desirable that a given producing reservoir be studied as a unit. In a permeable reservoir whose pores are filled with a saline solution, it was found that the total porosity and the type of sandstone influence the relationship between its electrical resistivity and the RO and the resistivity of the brine R,. The relation can be expressed by the following empirical equation, Ro = R10O— [i] where 0 is the porosity expressed as a fraction and the numerical value of the exponent lies between 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones, and is about 1.3 for clean, unconsolidated packs. This equation indicates that an appropriate electrical log can be used to estimate the porosity of a saline water-bearing reservoir when Rw and the type of rock are known. The fraction R0rw, is called the "formation resistivity factor." It reflects the effect of the nonconducting rock structure on the resistivity of the salt water that fills the tortuous paths through which the electricity must pass. The formation resistivity factor F is found to be related to permeability k. In this case the type of rock plays an important role, as shown by the relation F = ak-b [2] where the values of a and b must be determined experimentally for each horizon. Therefore Eq. I rather than Eq. 2 is used when it is desired to determine the value of F, because small changes in rock structure particularly in the pore size are not critical. Another useful relation, R = R0S- [3] where R = resistivity of rock when partially saturated with brine and partly with oil or gas, S = fraction of the pore space filled with brine, and n equals approximately 2 for both unconsolidated and consolidated sandstone, shows that the connate water of an oil or gas reservoir can be estimated in situ from a resistivity log. Equation 3 shows that in order to estimate the water content of a reservoir a knowledge of R and Ro is essential. The first value can be obtained from the electrical log when all factors influencing the resistivity curve can be properly taken into account. The short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relatire strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in. in diameter. Apparatus The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, 1/2 in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grams per minute. Pulley friction and bending resistance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neglected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20" C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere. In making the measurements, the furnace was brought to equilibrium before being used, and the temperature was measured with a platinum platinum-10 per cent rhodium thermocouple and a high-resistance pyrometer before and after all the tests at one temperature. Latouche, or the Beatson plant of the Kennecott Copper Corpn., is located in the Prince William Sound district of Alaska about 80 miles west of Cordova and 60 miles from Seward. Ore was discovered and claims located on Latouche Island in July, 1897. The mines were worked in a desultory manner until 1910, when the property was acquired by the Kennecott Copper interests. The first shipment of ore was made in 1904; only the higher grade ore was mined and no attempt was made to treat the ore until it was taken over by the Kennecott company. Since that time the mine has been developed to produce 1500 tons a day and a mill has been erected for treating this tonnage, using flotation entirely. The orebody is more or less lenticular in shape with a maximum width of about 280 ft. and a length of about 800 ft. The southern end of the lens is split by a horse of waste for about 400 ft. The hanging-wall limit is a well-defined fault associated with a band of pyrrhotite, having an average dip of 60". There is no defined foot wall, the value of the ore governing the limits of the mining; in one part of the mine, however, it is defined by a minorfault. The orebody is in a shear zone of the country rock of graywacke and slate. The principal mineral is chalcopyrite associated with pyrite and quartz. The mine is situated a few hundred feet from tidewater; the mill is on the beach and the ore is hoisted direct from the mine through a vertical shaft into the mill bins. Until the past year practically all the mining had been conducted in open pits. During the past two years, the ore above the 200-ft. level has been developed and a system of stoping devised to recover this ore; however, this system has not been in use long enough to give any definite results as to costs or efficiency. It consists, principally, of dividing the orebody into stopes, across the full width of the orebody, 70 ft. wide with a pillar 30 ft. wide between the stopes. Raises are driven through the stopes at intervals of about 60 ft. and all the ore is broken by drilling from these raises; in other words, similar to a shrinkage stope, doing the drilling from the raises instead of setting up on the broken ore as is customary. Titanium with up to 7.5 pct Al forms single-phase a alloys that are work hardening, not heat treatable, and ductile as welded. The high aluminum Y phase alloys are not usefully ductile, despite their low hardness, but they have excellent oxidation resistance and hot hardness. LITTLE has been published on the effect of aluminum on the mechanical properties of titanium, despite the fact that two of the first four commercial alloys released by titanium alloy producers contained aluminum as an important alloying ingredient. These were both a-ß type alloys, one containing 4 pct A1 and 4 pct Mn and the other containing 3 pct A1 and 5 pct Cr. However, neither of these alloys reflects the true alloying nature of aluminum, since each contains important amounts of the ß-stabilizing addition, manganese or chromium. In a previous publication on the constitution of Ti-A1 alloys,' the authors showed that aluminum had a high solubility in a titanium and was strongly a stabilizing in nature. About 25 wt pct A1 is soluble in a titanium at room temperature. With as little as 5 pct added aluminum, the a transus temperature is increased from 882" to 970°C, and the correspond- ing ß transus to 995°C. The first intermediate phase in the Ti-A1 system is the ordered face-centered tetragonal TiAl phase, which extends from 34 to 46 wt pct Al. The present paper presents hardness data over the entire titanium-rich region of the system, through the TiAl phase, and mechanical property data on the alloy range capable of being fabricated. Methods of Investigation The materials used and general preparation of alloys, as well as experimental techniques used in the investigation of Ti-A1 alloys, have been adequately described.' Briefly, the preparation consisted of arc-melting the desired amount of high purity aluminum (99.99 pct purity) and iodide titanium (maximum hardness 100 Vickers, as deposited) together on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial pressure of argon. The resulting button ingot was of such form that it could be fabricated without further treatment. All work was done using ingots weighing 10 to 15 g, which were hot-rolled to strip form whenever possible. Tensile samples were 3.25 in. long, 0.5 in. wide, and 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1.25 in. long by 0.250 in. wide. The gage length used was 1 in. Electrical strain gages mounted on the

Previous bench-scale studies demonstrated that a substantial moisture reduction can be obtained by the application of steam to coal filter-cakes, particularly to those containing a limited amount of minus 200-mesh material. Consequently, U.S. Steel's Applied Research Laboratory conducted a study to determine the feasibility of steam filtration of 1/4 in. by 0 coal on a continuous pilot-scale installation in which an Eimco extractor is used. The test results showed that the moisture content of this coal could be reduced to 5.5% at a steam loading of about 175 lb of steam per ton of dry cake. In terms of steam consumption, this loading is calculated to be 1-1/2 lb of steam per lb of water removed. In some tests, only 1 lb of steam per lb of water removed was required. These levels of steam consumption are significantly less than the actual heat requirements of conventional thermal dryers. The satisfactory moisture reductions were obtained at filtration rates of 125 to 186 lb of dry solids per sq ft per hour. However, the proper design of commercial filters should improve the potential rates that can be attained. These results indicate that steam filtration has considerable economic potential for drying 1/4 in. by 0 coals and also has additional advantages over the conventional thermal drying of coal. The results of the previous bench-scale studies and those published by Burton' demonstrated that a substantial moisture-content reduction can be effected by the application of slightly superheated steam to coal filter-cakes, particularly to those containing a limited amount of minus 200-mesh material. Consequently, US Steel's Applied Research Laboratory conducted a study to determine the feasibility of steam filtration of 1/4 in. by 0 coal on a continuous basis. In the continuous process, the dewatering operation on the filter is conducted in stages. In the first, the bulk of the water in the feed slurry is removed by conventional mechanical dewatering on a portion of the filter before the steam is applied. In the second stage, steam is applied to the cake. The steam condenses and releases its latent heat, thereby reducing the viscosity of the remaining cake water; this reduced viscosity then facilitates further drainage and produces a cake of lower moisture content. Because of the availability of feed coal on a continuous basis and since steam was readily available from a low-pressure boiler, the Applied Research Laboratory selected for the test site a coal-preparation plant that cleans Pittsburgh Seam coal. A slurry of table and flotation coal in percentages as they occur normally was used as feed stock. Typical analyses of this slurry are shown in Table I. DESCRIPTION OF FILTER AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES An Eimco Extractor was selected for the evaluation of steam filtration in a continuous process. This unit was chosen because of its availability and its design features that permit relatively simple hood construction, instrumentation, and operation. A photograph of the Extractor is shown in Fig. 1. In the filter a cloth medium is used that travels horizontally and continuously with a grooved, rubber drainage belt. It is some time since these columns have contained a report to the members on just what is doing in the Society of Mining Engineers. Accordingly, even though it is now a month and a half after the Annual Meeting in Denver, it seems that a report on what transpired at the SME Board Meeting there is in order. First off, I'd like to say that the Members of the Society of Mining Engineers can be justly proud of their representatives on the SME Board of Directors. Of 21 members and officers on the "Old" Board of Directors, 19 were present. President Brower Dellinger chaired the "Old" Board Meeting. Of the 21 members on the "New" Board of Directors, every single one was present. James Boyd, the outgoing AIME President, attended and expressed his appreciation of the support that the Society of Mining Engineers had given him during his year as President of AIME. Members Multiply Robert S. Shoemaker, Chairman of the SME Membership Committee, pointed out that based on figures available, the Society of Mining Engineers had a net gain of 523 members during 1969 while SPE had a 490 net gain and The Metallurgical Society a net loss of 159. This is probably the first time in the last 20 years that anyone has exceeded the SPE net gain in membership. While SME still has a way to go to surpass the Society of Petroleum Engineers in number of members, we did have, on December 1, 1969, 16,369 members. However, 419 were dropped at the end of that month leaving us with a net for the year of 15,950.

In the cyanidation of gold, silver and mixed ores, the solids, suspended in the pulp after fine grinding, primary settling and scries agitation arc subjected to a washing step known, generally, as countercurrent decanta-tion, abbreviated C.C.D The conventional C.C.D. plant consists of a series of separate thickeners—three to five in number—arranged in series on slightly different elevations. Solids settled in the first thickener are pumped at maximum density into the second thickener, where they arc diluted with weak solution overflowing the third. After settling in the second thickener they are pumped to the third, where the process of repulping with still weaker solution is repeated, and so on throughout the system, until they reach the last thickener and are repulped with barren solution or water. Recently there has been developed a new type of thickener, known as the Dorr Washing Tray Thickener, consisting of up to five individual thickeners, which performs in a single unit all the functions of a conven-tional C.C.D plant. Fig. 1 illustrates the essential features. It is a multicompartment tray thickener, in which the trays operate in scries instead of in parallel for countercurrent washing. Feed enters the top compartment via a central, semisubmerged feed well. Strong solution overflows into a peripheral launder. Solids settle to the bottom, are raked to the center and flow into the top of the second compartment, directly below, via an inverted cup and scal. Solids pass downward, compartment by compartment, against a counter flow of wash solution and finally of fresh water. Thus, in accord-:trice with the basic C.C.D. principle, the solids transfer the dissolved metal content to the wash solution and finally are removed by a diaphragm pump from the bottom compartment virtually free of valuable material. Similarly, the wash water, as it flows through the system, becomes increasingly enriched in dissolved metal until it overflows from compartment two and returns to the process.

PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

Gob pressure measurements were made in a Western U. S. coal mine as part of a long-term program to evaluate cave progress and to determine the influence of geological discontinuities on caving conditions, load transfer, and resulting instabilities. Gloetzl cells were selected for the measurements due to their simple, robust construction and a history of being able to monitor pressures in a broken medium. A methodology was developed for the successful installation and protection of the cells and hydraulic lines in the gob as the face retreated. The measurements indicated a cave progress controlled by the frequency of major faults. The pressure-mining progress profile was compared to those observed in other parts of the world. It was concluded that the significant differences in profiles was caused by the thick-bedded strata, the existence of high lateral stresses, and the spacing between faults. Recommendations are given for future applications of Gloetzl cells for gob pressure measurements.

IT has been suggested by a number of people that it would be worth while for some one to attempt to summarize or condense the proceedings of this symposium. This task has fallen to me as organizer and co-chairman. Its difficulty will be appreciated by anyone who attempts to read the whole proceedings. It is therefore with trepidation that I offer the following digest. In recent years there has been a renewal of interest in America on this subject of the cohesive strength of materials, and a growing appreciation of the need for a better theory of cohesion failure. The theories of elastic action and plastic action are well developed, particularly the former. The theory of plastic action is still in the course of development, but it is well along. Plastic action is terminated by cohesion failure and what is needed is a theory that will tell us when to expect the cohesion failure. In the past it has generally been assumed that cohesion failure will occur when a critical value of the maximum tensile stress has been reached. Many experiments have shown that this is not strictly true, and this symposium concerns itself with the failures of this simple hypothesis, and with the efforts that have been made to devise a more satisfactory theory. The most active contributor in recent years to knowledge in this field is Dr. McAdam, and he was asked to open the symposium with a summary or condensation of his papers and views. Undoubtedly it is presumptuous to attempt a still greater condensation, but perhaps it will be useful, because even his contribution to this symposium contains no summary, no concise statement of just what his contribution has bees. This investigation was started with the idea of determining whether copper-nickel mattes might not have a lower flowing temperature than copper mattes, and thus perhaps aid in accounting for the difficulty so far experienced in attempts at pyritically smelting copper-nickel ores. We have used the term flowing temperature to avoid confusion with the usual melting temperature. The idea at first was that there might be a greater viscosity range in the one matte than in the other. In the early experiments it was in our minds to determine the relative fluidity of the mattes at a given temperature. Looking to this end we tried pouring equal quantities of matte at the same temperature down an inclined graphite slab, and comparing the distances traveled. Results from such experiments were not satisfactory. We next tried pouring equal quantities at the same temperature through a drilled hole in an Acheson graphite crucible, timing the flow with a stop watch, the whole operation being carried out in the muffle. The flowing temperatures of the mattes tried in this way appeared to be about the same, and there was no marked difference in their fluidity when well fused. Oxidation gave some trouble. These experiments finally led to the adoption of the following apparatus which we thought at the time was wholly original with us, but which we have since found was described by W. McA. Johnson.l The tray used was a slab of graphite 8 in. long, 2 in. wide and 1/4 in. thick. It had six holes, into each of which sat a cup of Acheson graphite. Centrally in the bottom of each cup was a vertically drilled hole 3/16 in. in diameter and 1/2 in. long. The mattes to be tested were put into the cups, in a solid piece. The cups were covered with inverted Battersea "A" cups. The tray was put into the muffle of a gas-fired furnace. Supports on each end held the tray about 2 in. from the floor of the muffle. Under

IT is well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited' natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of 'a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity, is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of, price, has no exact meaning; and, in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the, quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization. This statement brings us to the examination of amore fundamental aspect of the law of supply and demand as applied to natural resources; namely, that natural-resource reserves are not fixed in size: just as the current supply of a natural-resource commodity is a function of price, so its reserve is likewise a resultant of price. This paper is written as a discussion of the paper, "Buckling of Tubing in Pumping Wells, Its Effects and Means for Controlling It" by Arthur Lubinski and K. A. Blenkarn, which war published in the March, 1957, issue of Journal oP Petroleum Technology. An analogy is drawn between the buckling of tubing in pumping wells and a fiube, fitted with frictionless pistom, linked by an inelastic rod, and which is subject to an internal pressure. A simple derivation shows that the critical internal pressure exerts a hydrostatic force on the pisfon which is close to the Euler load for compression buckling of the same tube. While the results agree with those of Ref. I, the basis of calculations has been changed and clarified. The presence of internal upsets at the pistons is discussed. INTRODUCTION In the Appendix, Lubinski and Blenkarn state that a tube with ends closed by frietionless pistons connected by an inelastic rod (Fig. 1) will behave as a column loaded with a force equal to the tension force in the rod. They note that, while the fluid may not resist a shear force, the moment in every cross section is piston force multiplied by the elastic line deflection (c.f., the loaded column). Since the equations of the elastic lines are similar in the two cases, the solution is carried over from the loaded column. On the contrary it is suggested that while the method of solution remains unchanged from the column case, the actual stress distribution is different, a fact which is taken into account in this note. A simple method of approximating the buckling pressure is given, and their reasoning in our mathematical language is continued. GENERAL EQUATIONS The equation of an elastic line, initially straight in the x direction (Fig. 2), is given by In the case of a loaded column, this may be written: For the pressurized tube it was shown, by analogy with the loaded column, that tion has a solution that, for P, = EI/P, any deflection is stable (a criterion for buckling). An attempt will be made to describe more precisely, the forces acting on the tube, and to analyze the buckling condi,tions. DISCUSSION If the tube assumed a deflected position, the volume between the pistons would increase so that in deflecting, the energy of the fluid would decrease. When the increase in elastic energy of the tube (due to bending) is equal to the decrease of fluid pressure energy, buckling conditions exist. Analyzing the forces on the tube (Fig. 3), two transverse forces, T,, T,, exerted by the pistons, are balanced by a resultant of the pressure elements which are linearly dependent on the local curvature of the elastic line (Fig. 4). Unlike most buckling cases, the forces depend on the shape of the elastic line, a condition that makes a rigorous mathematical treatment difficult. Several approximations may be used to clarify the problem.
