In a paper, " A Study of the Elimination of Impurities from Copper-Mattes, etc.," presented to the Institute at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1898, I gave certain figures which I called the relative slaggability in refining copper. In that paper* will be found the following pertaining to this subject: Relative Slaggability in Refining Converter-Copper. Cu. Pb. Bi. Sb. As. Se, Te. 1 129.5 1.13 7.30 5.22 0.81 and Relative Slaggability in Refining Electrolytic Copper. Cu. Pb. Sb. As. 1 41 9.97 7.13 Since there is a, possibility of misinterpretation of the above values, the following supplementary information may seem justified in explanation. As the contents of impurities in the unrefined or crude copper were unknown, the contents of the refined copper were substituted therefor, merely in order to obtain the two series of figures for comparison. These figures are higher than they would be had I been able to take the correct ones for the unrefined copper. The high figure, 129.5, for lead, in the case of converter-copper, means simply that more lead was slagged from the crude copper than remained in the refined copper; or, in definite values, that to 1 per cent. of copper slagged, the ratio of the lead gone into the slag and the lead remaining in the refined copper is 129.5 : 100. It is possible to approximate the true slaggability much more closely by adding the quantities of impurities in the refined copper to those in the slag, thus obtaining values for the crude copper in which the amounts volatilized are ignored (the latter

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not, include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

A few years later another gazetteer said of Virginia: "The Ouasioto Mountains are 50 or 60 miles wide at the Gap. These mountains abound in coal, lime and free-stone." The Gap was the Potomac River. A NOTABLE feature of the practice of the American mining engineer is the fact that 'his field has been world wide, and the results of his work may be found in all countries. For this reason, the mining engineer is particularly interested in any legislation tending to restrict his freedom in this respect. In their zeal to improve the status of the professional engineer, those responsible for the enactment of the registration laws now in effect in various of the United States may have introduced a practice that will result very much to the detriment of the American mining engineer. He is preeminently interested in the maintenance of the professional "open door," and fame may be the reward of him who calls the first "International Conference for the Limitation of Restrictive Legislation." There is no reason why these United States should be the only country to regulate the practice of professional engineering and, in fact, the movement is spreading beyond its borders. Already, it is necessary for the mining engineer to be thoroughly conversant with the various state laws in order to insure his right to pursue his calling. It may soon be necessary for him to make sure of his status in foreign countries before undertaking work in them.

THE compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and 220°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. The experimental results are presented in tabular form and a number of diagrams illustrating the phase behavior of this system have been included.

In the investigation reported here, calorimetric measurements have been made to determine the heat of formation of the compound AuSb2 and the partial gram-atomic enthalpies of antimony and gold in dilute solution in liquid tin and their enthalpy interaction coefficients. In order to interpret the behavior of antimony and gold in dilute solution in tin, nonzero values are assigned to the energies of bonds between like solute atoms relative to the pure solute state. Sa.mples of the compound AuSb2 were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of antimony and gold (99.999 pct pure) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes, which were shaken vigorously and quenched in water. The ingots were annealed in evacuated and sealed tubes at approximately 700°K for 2 weeks. Metallo-graphic and X-ray examinations gave no indication of second phases or microsegregation. The samples were added from 273°K to tin-rich solutions in a solution calorimeter1 maintained at 623°K. The calorimeter was calibrated with tin; the heat content of tin, H623°K- H273°K, was taken as 4.08 kcal per g-atom.2 In each calorimetric run at least four additions were made. The total concentration of solutes in the bath at the end of any run did not exceed 1 at. pct. The measured heat effect of an addition was plotted against the average of the atom fractions x of Sb + Au in solution before and after that addition. From this plot the heat effect at infinite dilution h,,, and the composition dependence of the heat effect dh/dx in the composition range 0 < x < 0.01 were obtained. The results for the additions of antimony, mixtures of antimony and gold, and the compound AuSb2 are listed in Table I. The heat effect h on addition of a sample of the compound AuSb2 or a mechanical mixture of antimony and gold at 273°K to a tin-rich solution at 623°K can be expressed as:

HE lecture on &apos;Thermodynamic Properties of Blast Furnace Slagso prepared in 1959 and published two years later required revision in one particular before it appeared in print. The activity of SiO, was deter mined through studies of the equilibrium: SiO, (in slag) 2C (graphite) = (in Fe) 2C0 (1 atm) The ratio for each experimental temperature was found from the heat of formation of cris-tobalite, the entropies and heat capacities of the re-actants, by virtue of the third law of thermodynamics. Discrepancies between several kinds of data led to investigations regarding other equilibria involving SiO, on the suspicion that there might be an error in the third-law value of its free energy. In particular the equilibrium: was restudied by Kay and Taylor who Confirmed the earlier results of Baird and Tayloron which their SiO, activities depended. The free energy of Sic was also rechecked4 independently. These and other equilibrium measurements led to the conclusion6 that the free energy of SiO, at high temperatures is in error and requires a correction of about -5 kcal. The exact source of the error is uncertain; it could lie either in the entropy of SiO, or in its heat of formation, but it more probably lies in the latter. Adjustment of this free energy lowers the ratio by a factor of approximately 4. Accordingly it will be necessary to multiply by this factor all of the SiO, activities determined by this method.&apos;,B Referring to the lecture cited, this correction should be applied in Figs. 8, 9, 10, 19, and 20. It applies also to the experimental data of Fig. 13, bringing these as well as those on the ternary system into good agreement with the work of Taylor and associates. The occurrence and distribution of phosphorus is one of the most important questions with which the steel-maker has to do. Large sums are invested in processes for the removal of this element from ores before they come to the blast-furnace, and much greater sums in freeing the pig-iron from it. Mechanical engineers are becoming more and more critical of the amount of total phosphorus left in structural steel, the tendency being to require that it be reduced to the lowest possible figure. The old maximum of 0.1 per cent. is now considered much too high for first-class structural steel, and demands for 0.03 to 0.01 per cent. are by no means unheard of. The first to speak, in a scientific way, of the harmful effect of phosphorus on iron and steel appears to have been Meyer, who, in 1781, made mention of what we now term "cold-shortness," ascribing it to the presence of this metalloid, but not suggesting any remedy. It is, however, doubtful if a clear idea of this subject was possessed by the scientific world until after the invention of the pneumatic or Bessemer process, in 1855-56. One of the chief obstacles in the way of this renowned metallurgist,—one, indeed, the removal of which was the sine qua non of success,—was the phosphorus in the iron blown. The effect of the phosphorus does not seem to have been apprehended until many and costly experiments had been made, and then the required minimum percentage of it in the iron was secured only by the use of low-phosphorus ores. It was not until &apos;1879-80 that practical success was reached, by the Thomas process, in the actual removal of the phosphorus from the iron. We now know something of the effect of the total amount of phosphorus on iron and steel, but very little as to the effect of the condition of the phosphorus. The state of combination in which

(communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Johnson recognizes that connate waters must be driven, outward toward the earth&apos;s surface. He considers the ascent due to the settling and packing of the underlying sediments and to the formation of gas within the rocks, supplemented by abyssal pressures. The origin of the methane in the sedimentary strata probably is not simple. There are three possible modes of origin: (1) as marsh gas formed near the surface and entrapped in the sediments; (2) from abyssal sources; (3) by the decomposition of organic matter buried in the sediments. The abyssal source is generally negligible, and in all cases doubtful. The third origin is the most important in the gas fields. A fourth mode of origin, by the dissociation of liquid hydrocarbons, frequently has been suggested, but it is improbable, because crude oils are exothermic. Therefore they have no tendency, to split or decompose at low temperatures, as do endothermic substances, such as coal, which is geologically by the loss of methane, water, and carbon dioxide. This cannot happen to a hydrocarbon until its temperature of dissociation (" cracking point") is reached, which is over 250&apos;.C. for the most easily cracked hydrocarbons and over 400° C. for others. Engler says that the dissociation of fats and waxes into oils is an endothermic process, thereby unconsciously nullifying his own theory of the dissociation of these substances at low temperatures. However, recently I have found reason to think that heat is liberated by the disruption of the molecules of fats and waxes, as it is in the molecular decomposition of the substances of wood, coal, etc. If this tentative opinion is correct, and Engler wrong, then it seems that the Engler-Höfer hypothesis of the origin of oil becomes not only possible, but even probable.

ONLY a few small pools of oil were found in West Virginia during 1924. The price of oil was so low that there was no incentive for active effort toward the discovery of new pools or the exploitation of reasonably certain productive areas. At present, several encouraging edge-pool developments are being held in reserve in the hope that a more favorable market is not far distant. In the old pools, wells are being carefully tended; there being little tendency toward abandonment. even in cases where production is temporarily unprofitable. In natural gas, however, the total value of which at the well mouth is now more than that of oil, the year has been busy and profitable. , The decline of old pools, together with the increasing demand, has caused the large operators who carry their gas to the consumer to make great efforts to preserve or increase the rate of production; while the small operators, who sell their product to the large companies at the well mouth, have been stimulated toward the same effort by more favorable prices. These conditions brought about the completion of a greater number .of gas wells in 1924 than in 1923. Few pools of gas have been discovered during the year, the principal production having been obtained in old areas and in the unusually large new territory that was revealed as potentially productive by the drilling of 1923. Some of these latter areas are still without pipelines but definite plans for getting most of this gas are now being executed.

WILKES-BARRE, PA., April, 1871. THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enor¬mous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engi¬neers, superintendents, and others, in mastering the problems which are con¬stantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal¬liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the- periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. It must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupations in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centres, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. It is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above men¬tioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. Hundred-octane aviation gasoiine, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for the needs of aviation and the armed forces, and synthetic chemicals for rubber manufacture again commanded the top priorities of the petroleum refining industry in 1944, the third year of America&apos;s active participation in the war. The objective continued to be to produce more and more of these materials—to keep up with increasingly greater requirements. By the end of the year all of the new installations projected before 1944, with the exception of possibly two or three that will tail over into January or February of 1945, had been completed and put into operation. And with the completion and putting into operation of these various units and the consequent lessening of construction responsibilities and problems, the industry was put into position to concentrate on the new operations and devote much more of its time and effort looking toward maximum output, both as to quantity and quality from the new facilities. Aviation Gasoline Making high-octane aviation gasoline continued to be the prime requisite of refining activities during 1944 as it was in the two previous war years, with the sights at the end of the year set to still higher figures than those which had been previously projected. About July I the daily output had been raised to 400,000 bbl., with some few large plant installations still to be completed and put into operation. Indications were that by December production would be up to all requirements, with good inventories. However, although by the end of the year the industry was turning out something over 500,000 bbl. a day, the estimated requirements of the armed services had been raised by a considerable figure, owing to the greatly increased aerial activities both in the European and Far Eastern combat areas. By the end of the year, therefore, the picture had changed, with the prospect for a much longer continuation of the European war, so that even with the completion and putting into operation in the United States by January 1945 of the last two or three 100-octane units authorized prior to 1944, it was evident it would be necessary to make still greater efforts to increase output of existing facilities to keep safely ahead of the game. Efforts of the industry and the Petroleum Administration for War as well as the Technical Advisory Committee and other research and development groups are concentrated therefore on methods and means of further augmenting the produc. tion of all existing refinery facilities engaged in making 100-octane aviation gasoline and components entering into it. The goal will be reached.

THE Greenwood-Grand Forks area of southern central British Columbia, known as the Boundary District, has a long history of mining exploration and production. At the turn of the century this was the premier copper mining camp in the British Empire, its total production amounting to some 20 mil- lion tons. Most of this ore came from the great Granby mines at Phoenix, but the Motherlode mine at Deadwood camp, 6 miles to the west, and several mines in Summit camp, 5 miles north of Phoenix, made important contributions. The large deposits were exhausted in 1918 and the district since has seen only desultory exploration and salvage operations. The orebodies are mineralized skarn zones in limestone members of a thick series of Upper Paleozoic sedimentary and volcanic strata. Chalcopyrite is the primary ore-mineral. Copper carbonates and silicates occur sparingly in outcrops, but the oxidized zone generally is very shallow. Much of the surface is mantled by glacial drift which in most places ranges in thickness from 2 to 15 ft. In some of the hanging valleys, however, the glacial drift may be as much as 100 ft thick and may assume drumlin-like forms.

Nickel has always been a fruitful mother of problems. Previous to the year 1906 nickel was regarded as an element replacing iron in copper-mattes, and it was believed that the same laws which governed the elimination of iron could be applied to nickel. This conception has lately undergone a complete change, and nickel in all its stages is now regarded as an element replacing copper; in other words, copper-nickel is considered not as two elements, but as one metal. When we commenced our investigations on Monel metal we made a great many experiment* on the conversion of mattes, both high copper and high nickel. We studied closely the composition of the mattes and the changes produced by the blow. We found in all cases certain agreements which me believe are due to some law. Briefly stated, our conclusions are as follows : 1. Nickel is not an element replacing iron in matte. 2. Nickel-copper alloys act in the matte-blow like one metal. 3. Nickel-copper alloys follow, during the matte-blow, exactly the same laws that govern the behavior of copper alone. This brings up the question: What are the laws governing the production of metallic copper, and what are the relations of copper to sulphur and iron during the Bessemer blow?

FLASH roasting of iron concentrate is in the experimental stage at Copperhill. The problem is peculiar in that the iron concentrate is predominantly pyrrhotite; the ratio of that mineral to pyrite being 5 to 1. Results so far indicate that the heat, generated in roasting a material containing 52.0 per cent iron and 38.0 per cent sulfur, requires special handling and for this reason the installation costs per ton of roaster feed may be too great to compete with hearth roasting. Interesting features of flash roasting at Copperhill are: 1. The sulfur dioxide content of the roaster exit gas can be varied between wide limits. Eight per cent sulfur dioxide gas, with 1.30 per cent sulfur in the calcine, has been common practice and gas up to 13.0 per cent sulfur dioxide has been possible. 2. Temperatures of the exit gases are very high. When roasting 60 tons or more of iron concentrate per 24 hr. in a modified Wedge roaster, the temperature in the roaster rises to 2000° F. and the calcine is lowered to 0.20 per cent sulfur. If the entire roaster system could be constructed to withstand such temperatures, ideal roasting conditions would obtain as regards sulfur elimination and tonnage roasted.
