Bacterial leaching of copper and uranium is practiced under acidic conditions in environments furnishing sulfur and iron. However, many mineral deposits do not have these conditions; the chalcocite and native copper deposits in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are examples. Species of bacteria and fungi isolated previously from samples taken at the White Pine Copper Co. tailings pond and mine, were screened for solubilization of copper from chalcocite ore and flotation concentrate and from native copper jig concentrate. Certain Penicillium species solubilized significant amounts of copper under neutral to slightly acidic conditions in a carbon and nitrogen-enriched medium. Leaching apparently was accomplished by release of metabolites which chelated with the copper. The copper yield was highly dependent upon the medium composition and the concentration of copper in the source material. The standardized procedures which were developed in an attempt to maximize copper yield in leaching times of three to five days are described. This preliminary research indicates a biological leaching process for copper which is different from those in use, but whether it can be applied economically remains to be determined.

Three new transfer functions relating the time response of the amount of floatable mineral in the under flow to time-dependent changes in the amount of floatable mineral in the feed to the cell are presented. Using experimental stimulus-response data obtained from the flotation of -200+325-mesh glass spheres in a rotor-stator-type cell, the new transfer functions are compared to the only transfer function to be presently found in the literature by nonlinear least-squares fitting in the frequency domain. The new mathematical model based on the amount of available bubble surface area and its rate of introduction is quite promising. The transfer function which allows for a distributed first-order flotation rate constant also gives good results. Simultaneous sodium chloride tracer and glass bead stimulus-response tests show that the mixing conditions in the cell were nearly ideal. It is felt that the new transfer functions presented offer excellent alternatives for use in the design of automatic process control equipment for the continuous mechanical froth flotation cell.

THE lead deposits of Missouri may be divided into three districts, the southwest, middle, and southeast. As too much time would be required to devote a detailed account to each district, only a description of the modes of occurrence of the lead ores in the southeast district will be given. The lead mining region proper of Southeast Missouri is embraced in an area of about twenty-five miles in width by about one hundred in length. The country embraced in this district is very broken, and traversed by ridges from one hundred to three hundred feet in height, with an occasional knob rising higher. Porphyry forms almost the entire substructure of the region, with here and there outcrops of granite. The crystalline rocks were eroded into ridges and valleys before the deposition of the limestone took place. These porphyries are older than the Silurian limestones, and "belong (according to Pumpelly) to the Archaean (Azoic) formation, of which they may be the youngest member in Missouri. They are the near equivalents, in point of age, to the great iron-bearing rocks of Lake Superior, New Jersey, and Sweden."12/02/2007

IT has been shown' that in the absence of heavy metal salts, the nature of the alkali used to promote differential flotation-whether caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate-is unimportant. The hydroxyl ion is the active depressant upon which differentiation depends, and the pH value determines whether a film of collector forms on any given mineral surface. Even when sodium cyanide is used in conjunction with alkalies, it is the pH value and not the nature of the alkali or its concentration that is important, for upon the pH value alone depends the fraction of the added sodium cyanide that is present as cyanide ion, which is the true depressant. When heavy metal salts become dissolved from partly oxidized ores, or are added intentionally as activators, conditions are different, and metallurgists have found that lime and sodium carbonate do not give identical results, even when added in amounts sufficient to produce the same pH value. In the few instances in which we had attempted to confirm this view, we had failed to do so, for, with nothing to guide us, we had inadvertently chosen solutions that gave contact curves of a "standard type," which correspond to conditions of ready floatability. Now, however, we find that, in the presence of copper salts, and within a restricted range of reagent concentrations, the nature of the anions present is important, and that sodium carbonate does influence the results, apart from the usual effect due to its influence on pH value. With the recognition of this anion effect, and with the control of temperature already introduced,2 it appears that the factors of major importance in connection with this set of reagents have been taken into consideration, and that the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from contact tests will be of more immediate value to the operator. SUMMARY A detailed analysis of nickel, copper, and cobalt recovery from manganese nodules shows simple rates of return of 9-15% in 1985. A sulfur dioxide roast process yields a slightly better return than an ammonia leach technique. Nodule tonnage predictions tend to be over-optimistic and more conservative forecasts show that market penetrations are only significant for cobalt and manganese. However, cobalt prices are unlikely to fall to the level of nickel. Between now and 1985, cobalt is expected to be in balanced to tight availability. INTRODUCTION Deep-ocean manganese nodules are one- to two-inch concretions which cover 2040% of large areas of the ocean bottom. Commercial targets far these black, potato-like nodules are located in the North Pacific at water depths of 5,000-6,000 m. in a belt roughly midway between Hawaii and Mexico. However, good grade nodules are not solely limited to this belt as areas southwest and northwest of Hawaii, as well as in the Indian Ocean, contain concentrations of acceptable grade manganese nodules. Some 90% of the nodules are found half-buried on the deep ocean bottom. A siliceous-ooze host soil combined with low sedimentation rates, certain ocean currents, and possible geo- thermal effects are favorable factors far nodule formation. Electrical double-layer properties of the silver sulfide-solution interface in different electrolytes and the influence the properties exert on the adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) were studied using an electrochemical titration technique. The flotation behavior of silver sulfide was observed using DAA as collector and the results were correlated with adsorption measurements. Silver and sulfide ions were identified as the potential determining ions and their adsorption densities were measured as functions of the pAg and of the ionic strength at two different pH values. The point-of-zero-charge (PZC) was observed to be at pAg 10.2, the value being independent of pH and of the nature and concentration of the electrolyte used. The surface charge of silver sulfide in these electrolytes was positive for pAg values less than 10.2 and was negative for pAg values greater than 10.2. The adsorption of amine on silver sulfide surfaces at pH 4.7 was found to be strongly dependent on the pAg. A shift in the PZC towards a lower pAg due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion towards silver sulfide surfaces. At pH 9.2 a strong adsorption of the undissociated amine molecule was indicated. The PZC shift towards a higher pAg and the adsorption of the amine was virtually independent of the interfacial electrical conditions.

INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD's and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. But if the deposit is comparatively wider and the broken ore around the middle part of the deposit cannot be extracted, several drawing drifts are driven to the deposit and in order to minimize dead ore at the final stage of operation, the

The gas-lift method of flowing oil from wells is the outstanding feature of petroleum technology today. Its forerunner, the air-lift, was used successfully first, in the Baku fields of Russia, in 1899, and later in the Gulf Coast fields of Texas and Louisiana and the Kern River field of California. It is still used to a limited extent in certain oil fields. The use of compressed natural gas for lifting oil from wells has supplanted the air-lift method in a measure in those fields where a sufficient quantity of gas accompanies the oil to make the gas-lift possible, or where natural gas is plentiful and inexpensive. We find, therefore, in California, that natural gas is used at practically every well where a gaseous medium is employed to flow the oil. The use of natural gas has many advantages over that of air. It is possible to recover and save the gasoline from the gas that accompanies the oil to the surface. This gasoline would be wasted if air were used as the lifting medium. Also, certain proportions of air and gas form an explosive mixture that cannot be handled safely by compressors. Another advantage that gas has over air is that gas under pressure is more soluble in oil. Gas in solution in oil reduces the viscosity of the oil that is being produced and causes it to flow more readily through the tubing and flow lines. The gas-lift has made it possible to recover many thousands of barrels of oil from deep wells in California that could not have been produced otherwise. It would not have been economical, had it been mechanically possible, to produce such wells as the world's deepest producing oil well (Miley Athen's No. 6, Rosecrans field, California) by any other method of pumping known today. At this well, production is obtained from between 7305 and 7591 ft. and 11 months after completion of the well, production was being maintained on the gas-lift at approximately 2000 bbl. a month. The crookedness of the hole, or its diameter and depth will not prevent the successful application of gas-lift pumping when other conditions are favorable.

THE following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal students. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbituminous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual -analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses.

Better understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra

The problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenh?ttenleute at D?sseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Diisseldorf meeting: " The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in using ore briquettes, is the cost of production of a ton of iron." Impingement attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally. Impingement Tests Early in 1929 the apparatus was built. The samples were disks of 1-in. dia., cut from sheet metal. They were eleaned with fine emery cloth and set in holders, as shown in Fig. 1. A stream of water pumped directly from the river impinged on the surface of the sample. Compressed air was injected into the water stream through an air duct. IT IS obviously impossible to design a copper smelting plant which could be considered, ideal under all conditions. For example, a plant properly designed to smelt the concentrates resulting from the treatment of porphyry ores by flotation would not be the kind of plant that one would design for the treatment of a coarse pyritous copper ore. The smelting of flotation or other fine concentrates is generally accomplished in a reverberatory plant, although occasionally the concentrates are sintered and then smelted in blast furnaces. On the other hand, coarse self-fluxing ores, whether pyritic or semi-pyritic, are generally smelted in a blast-furnace plant. Even this statement is only- approximately true, since the choice will be influenced by many factors; for example, the kind of fuel available (coal, oil or coke), the value of power (electric or steam), the uses to which waste steam may be put (heating, drying, etc.), the cost of refractories (silica and fire brick), the permanence and continuity of the ore supply and the relative first costs of the two types of plant (the reverberatory plant is generally more expensive to construct and to shut down), the contour of the site on which the plant is to be built (rugged, rolling or flat), the intelligence and character of the labor avail-able, and many other factors. From these remarks, it is evident that no copper smelter can be ideal for all conditions of ore and locality, and inasmuch as most of the copper now being pro-duced comes from fine or flotation concentrates and these are generally smelted in reverberatory furnaces, I shall confine my remarks to this type of smelt-ing plant.

Pachuca tanks are used widely as reactors for treating gold slimes, and for alumina digestion and uranium leaching. In some designs, slurry mixing in the tank is achieved by introducing air at the base of a draft tube, which is the full height of the tank. A buoyant air-slurry mixture rises in the draft tube and is discharged at the top. The slurry flows back through the bulk of the tank volume. Little information is available to predict the relationship between slurry flow rate in the draft tube, and the volume of air added at the base of the tube. Most current designs are based on the energy balance proposed by Lamont 25 years ago. Recent two-phase flow theory is used to develop a momentum balance for the flow in the draft tube, and a new, accurate design equation is derived. Bubble slip, frictional (wall) losses, entrance losses, and acceleration effects all contribute to the pressure gradient in the draft tube. None of these factors may be neglected under typical operating conditions. The new design equation accounts for all of these factors, and finds good agreement with Lamont's experimental example. Also, the new equation demonstrates that it is uneconomical to operate the draft tube with high airflow rates.

SUMMARY THE possibility of colloidal deposition of cinnabar has been neglected. In opalite deposits cinnabar exists in particles within or near the colloidal size range. Colloidal processes have been admitted to be operative in hot springs and low-temperature deposits similar to most cinnabar deposits. Mercuric sulphide sols are stable to elevated temperature and pressure, and in nature probably are chiefly affected by the electrolytes in solution, dilution of colloid, and presence of protective colloids as silica. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols to electrolyte is measured, and shown to be greatly increased by dilution and by the protective action of silica. Mercuric sulphide sols follow the Schulze-Hardy valency rule, therefore the precipitating power of complex mixtures of electrolytes can be computed roughly. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols is shown to be greater than the equivalent precipitating power of the electrolytes in a hot spring depositing mercuric sulphide. It is concluded that finely divided or earthy types of cinnabar are colloidally deposited. POSSIBILITY OF COLLODIAL DEPOSITION While colloidal solution has been suggested as a means of transport for a number of minerals, such as the sulphides of antimony, arsenic, and iron, it has been neglected in connection with mercury. This is surprising because there exists positive evidence that cinnabar is present in certain deposits in particles of colloidal or near colloidal size. Colloidal transport could result from either the rapid dilution or neutralization of alkaline sulphide solution bearing mercury coming in contact with deep ground waters, or from colloidal solution near the original source and subsequent flow to the point of deposition unchanged. That the dilution of a mercuric alkaline sulphide solution will precipitate mercury sulphide in colloidal form has been demonstrated a number of times and is easily confirmed. The dilution hydrolyzes the alkaline sulphide Na2S to the corresponding hydroxide and hydrosulphide NaOH and NaHS, and the diminution of the concentration of alkaline sulphide reduces the solubility. It is not the contention of this writer that colloidal deposition is the mode of transport of mercuric sulphide in all mercury deposits, but that the stability of a mercuric sulphide sol, as demonstrated below, in waters that are similar to those that have deposited mercuric sulphide necessitates consideration of this possibility in many deposits, especially those of the hot-spring and so-called opalite type. EVIDENCE OF COLLOIDAL DEPOSITION Ross1 has shown that most deposits of quicksilver are formed at low temperatures and pressures, and probably by solutions that have relatively simple chemical compositions. In most cases the solutions are probably similar to those observed in hot springs, and in two instances-at Steamboat Springs, Nevada, and Sulphur Bank, California-hot springs have been reported by Becker as actually depositing cinnabar.2 Opalite deposits were believed by early investigators to be surface phenomena

Some form of longwall mining is generally used in Continental Europe; also in Great Britain where the coal is weak and friable, or the coal bed provides material for pack walls and filling, or where the bottom is soft and squeezes up easily, or the roof is pliable, or the bed is thin and brushing provides building material, or the thick multiple seams are mined in layers, such as the 24-ft.seam at Weymss, Scotland, or the 10-yd. pitching bed near Coventry, England. Pillar methods have been retained in British fields where the coal beds are from 5 to 9 ft. (1.5 to 2.7 m.) thick, and free from thick partings or binders or without draw slate, which would provide waste rock for pack walls, or where the roof is hard and requires shooting to bring down, and also the bottom or floor is comparatively hard. The room-and-pillar system, by which probably 95 per cent. of the coal of the United States is produced, is now found in only a few mines in Wales, where it is known as the pillar and (single) stall method. The American room-and-pillar system is not equivalent to the bord-and-pillar or stoop-and-room system. The essential difference between the bord-and-pillar and the average American room-and-pillar system is probably due to natural conditions. The majority of the coal mines in the United States have a depth of less than 700 ft. (213 m.). The bulk of the coal mined in Europe comes from a depth of more than 1200 ft., while the deepest mines in Great Britain, Belgium, and France reach 3500 to 4000 ft. In deep workings wide spans are impracticable, even with the use of abundant timber; accordingly, as the mines in the United States become deeper the rooms will become narrower and the pillars thicker, and the bulk of the coal will be extracted on the retreat. It is generally conceded, without reference to the cost of production, that the larger the pillars left on the first mining, the more thoroughly can the coal be extracted. In Europe complete extraction is generally compelled either by the lessors or by the governments; whereas in this country it has been more largely a question of competitive cost of production, or the support of the surface in the flat farming districts of the

MEASURES appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-19 has accumu-lated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors-the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Con-trol of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious air-borne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables.
