Standard testing methods are described that are presently used for the selection of grinding equipment. Correlation between laboratory batch grinding tests and pilot plant continuous tests are established by means of particle size distributions and flotation results. Conventional and autogenous grinding circuits are discussed showing the relationships of the controllable circuit parameters.

Some recent experiments in the use of compressed air for rock drills at higher than usual pressures, up to 150 lb. per sq. in., emphasize the importance of maintaining the compressed-air system in the best condition if the greatest possible over-all efficiency is to be secured. No claim of high over-all efficiency can be made for the compressed-air system of braking that is used on railroad trains, yet the air brake works effectively. Compressed air is not used efficiently in the rock drill, but no other type of machine drilling is yet a serious competitor of the air-driven rock drill.

IRON and steel scrap has again become page one news, as it was during the war. To many this is anomalous because the common concept is that the theaters of war are literally paved with scrap as the by-product of war damage and abandoned materiel. To an extent this is true, the bottleneck being the ferreting out and transportation of this scrap. While you as consumers of the electric-furnace grades of scrap-the premium grades-are concerned primarily in only one segment of the scrap market, I believe you ill be interested in a general discussion of the market with subsequent funneling down to your specialty.

NAME AND OBJECT. SEC. 1. This Institute is incorporated under the Membership Corporations law of the State of New York ; its corporate name is American Institute of Mining Engineers; and its objects are such as are stated in its Certificate of Incorporation. ARTICLE II. MEMBERS. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise four classes, namely 1. Members ; 2. Honorary Members ; 3. Associates ; 4. Junior Members. All members shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, except¬ing that Honorary Members, Junior Members, and Members and Associates whose residences shall be outside of the United States, Mexico, and Canada shall not be entitled to vote. To improve blasting methods it is necessary to know how the explosive force acts and how rock resists this force. Because of the tremendous power developed within milliseconds and the great number of other factors directly affecting the technical and economic results, an analysis of the fundamentals of blasting theory is difficult. But since the rules used for layout design and for calculations of size of explosive charges are based on theoretical assumptions, complete knowledge of blasting theory has great practical importance in mining. Analysis of Blasting Theory: It is interesting to note the opinion of blasting experts with respect to contemporary blasting theories. F. Stussi,' Professor of the University of Zurich, stated: "We do not have enough experience yet to change our army engineering regulations in blasting and base it on new fundamentals. It is our duty to collect more practical data and to do more research in blasting to close this gap." K. H. Fraenkel,' editor of the Manual on Rock Blasting published in 1953 in Sweden and written by well-known Swedish, German, Swiss, and French blasting and explosive experts, said: "To the best of our knowledge no suitable formulas for civil blasting work are to be found in the American, French or German literature."

Direct identification in situ of x and a phase precipitates in stainless steel is possible with the electron probe microanalyzer. Although particles in the 1 p size range are too small to yield absolute percent composition, the relative % Crfi Mo ratio can be used to distinguish the two phases with better than 95 pct confidence. Wet chemical analysis of extracted residues gives Cr/Mo ratios in good agreement with electron probe results extrapolated to the 4 to 5 p size range. INTRODUCTION The use of computers to assist the mine ventilation engineer began to grow in the early 1950s when electrical analogue devices were developed for the analysis of mine airflow systems in Europe and the United States (l,2,3). The need for quantitative planning of airflows in mines had become pressing and analogue computers fulfilled a useful purpose for over a decade. From about 1964 onwards, digital computer programs for mine ventilation network analysis became available (4,5) and, superseding the analogues, spread rapidly throughout the major mining countries. The successful implementations of such programs resulted in further research being directed towards the development of simulation programs to model the quality as well as the quantity of air flowing through underground workings. It is no understatement that digital computers have revolutionised environmental planning techniques in modern mining industries. This paper discusses the complex interaction of natural and mining factors which governs environmental hazards in underground mines and further indicates some of the simulation techniques which have entered practical usage or are at an advanced stage of development. THE PROBLEM OF ANALYSING THE MINE ENVIRONMENT The traditional methods of approaching environmental problems underground were based largely on empirical or intuitive techniques. The reason for this lay in the intricate relationships which exist between the many variables that influence the mine environment - and which limit the use of purely analytical methods to the simplest of cases. RESIDUAL deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. PRODUCTS OF WEATHERING That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown. in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its some-what greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.1

This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. It is also probable that the conditions observed in this field will enable accurate comparisons of various well-spacing programs as to efficiency of production and ultimate recovery. Total crude fluorspar reserves in western Europe, containing more than 35 pct CaF*, are estimated at 12 million metric tons, while reserves in the USSR and Soviet sphere may exceed 5 million metric tons. The bulk of these reserves are concentrated in the USSR, Spain, United Kingdom, Western Germany, and Italy. Since published estimates of the tonnages of individual mines and explored deposits are not available for most countries in Europe, the estimates given in Table I for individual countries are necessarily approximate, as they have been compiled from various sources and modified and combined according to the author's judgment. The majority of fluorspar deposits in Europe belong to the late Paleozoic metallogenetic epochs and have been found within or along the borders of the Hercynian massifs. Deposits in the Central and Esterel massifs of France, those of Western and Eastern Germany, Sardinia, the Catalonian coastal range and the Sierra de 10s Santos in Spain, and those of Devonshire and Cornwall belong to the Hercynian metallogenetic epochs. The deposits in southern Norway and Sweden belong to the middle Paleozoic or later, those of northern England to the late Paleozoic or later, those of northern Spain and Greece to the late Mesozoic, and those of northern and probably central Italy and Switzerland to the early Tertiary. Fluorspar occurs typically in veins, lenses, and stringers, but also in bedded replacement deposits and pockets, and may be colorless to white, yellow, green, pink, brown, blue, or purple to almost black. Except for the colorless variety, the only kind which can be used for the optical industry, the color of the fluorspar does not affect its ultimate use,

STRUCTURAL imperfections in crystals, in recent years, have received the attention of metallurgists concerned with single-crystal properties. Certain etching solutions cause local variations in the rate of etching at dislocations.' Dislocations are expected to be preferred segregation sites for impurities' and Dash" has shown that precipitation of copper occurs preferentially at edge-type dislocations in silicon. Diffusion rates along dislocations are probably higher than rates through more perfect crystalline regions.' These and other phenomena which may be influenced by dislocations may be studied by revealing dislocations as etch pits. This study was undertaken to develop an etch solution for silicon crystals to reveal low-angle grain boundaries associated with dislocation arrays and also etch pits with good contour definition. Additional etches have been reported by Dash," Vogel and Lovell.T rystals were sectioned on crystal lographic planes at various angles from the growth direction for microscopic examination of the etch pits. Experimental Crystals of 75-100 g mass and 3 cm diam were oriented and cut on crystallographic planes. Crystals were grown by Czochralski technique from a quartz crucible. Lapped wafers were chemically polished in a modified CP-4 etch for 1 min (bromine was deleted from the etch solution). The polished wafer was then etched* at room temperature for 5 min. The use of larger amounts of H2O and/or CH2COOH slows the reaction. The Cu(NO3),.3H2O was added to increase the reaction rate and give more definition to the etch pits developed. INTRODUCTION Numerous deposits of lead and zinc sulfides, often accompanied by barite and fluorite, occur in carbonate host rocks throughout central and eastern United States. So similar are the deposits in broad general characteristics that they long have been classified as Mississippi Valley type. They differ widely, however, in details such as metal ratios, age of host rock, type of ore-bearing structure, and probable time of mineralization. The theories developed to explain the source and transport of the metals are many and are known to all. The deposits have been termed telethermal on the basis of their presumably shallow occurrence and the attempt to relate the metals to the classic hydro- thermal sequence. 1t is now recognized that deposits of this type can occur at any depth; the only depth limitation is thickness of the sedimentary section. Ideas on the source of the metals also have changed, A rapidly growing body of evidence suggests that the metals were brought by concentrated brines from nearby sedimentary basins. The hypothesis preferred today by many geologists postulates that the metals were deposited during the course of normal sedimentation in depositional basins of miogeosynclinal or orthogeosynclinal type. At some time after deposition of the sediments, the metals were carried out of the basins by migrating brines; the brines moved laterally and upward into structurally high areas; they entered any reservoir-like structure, either primary or secondary in origin, that happened to be available; in this reservoir, possibly in a sulfur-rich environment, the metals were precipitated as ore minerals.

THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy ), and the explanation of those facts (geogeny). The facts to observe are: I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. II. PHYSICAL, such as texture, whether sedimentary or crystalline ; and, if crystalline, whether granitic, porphyritic, amygdaloidal, globular, or concretionary; whether compact or granular; coarse or fine; pervious or impervious; hard or soft; firm or tender; with cleavage or without; massive or thin; the microscopic structure; also whether magnetic or not; soluble or insoluble; fusible or infusible; and the constituent minerals. III. CHEMICAL, that is, the composition of the rocks and of their minerals and their affinities. IV. PALÆONTOLOGICAL, as what kind of fossils are in the rocks,

In the concentrator of Kamioka Mine, lead-zinc bulk differential flotation is practiced. It results in three kinds of thickener over- flow, namely; tailing, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate, which are discharged as wastewater. Since these three kinds of overflow differ from each other in water quality, they are separately recycled to appropriate processes based on their water quality. The tailing and the lead concentrate thickener overflow are directly recycled to their respective suitable processes. However, as the zinc thickener overflow contains Cu(CN)3--, ZnS, CdS, CN-, xanthate and frother, the total zinc thickener overflow cannot be recycled at one time to any one process without creating harmful effects. Consequently, all the ingredients in the zinc thickener overflow other than CN- are floated by Ion-Precipitate-Ultrafine-particle flotation, using Nagahm flotation machine. After this treatment, the zinc thickener overflow, containing only CN-, is effectively recycled to the lead-zinc differential flotation circuit. Thus the integrated recycling of waste-water greatly reduces environmental problems, and in addition it generates a sizeable profit by improving overall mill recovery, and permitting the reduction of reagent consumption.
