The technologist who has devoted much attention to the foundry-business will perhaps have noticed that the present scientific development of foundry-practice is in a condition similar to that of the steel-business some twenty years ago. In many cases chemistry is looked upon with suspicion, and the old cutand-try-methods are still in vogue, especially in the smaller foundries. The larger works have laboratories and more extensive means for applying science, and have devoted considerable time and attention to the improvement of foundry-practice. This is more especially true in the East, although in the West there are numerous firms devoting considerable attention to improving their metllods through the application of chemistry to work in the iron-foundry. It is hardly necessary to dwell extensively upon the effects of the different metalloids associated with iron, in pig- or castiron, in the way they are given in most text-books. The writer has thought proper to consider more particularly new developments in eupola-practice, particularly those pertinent to the discussion of the physics of cast-iron. In this connection some new ideas which recent practice has developed will be mentioned, and some results of practical tests along the same line will be described. Yet it has been deemed advisable also, by way of introduction, to outline the effects of the metalloids as they are described in most text-books, without going into detail. The question is sometimes asked, What is the most important element governing the quality of cast-iron 'for any particular purpose ? Largest uranium deposit in the Northwest is Dawn Mining Co.'s Midnite mine on the Spokane Indian B Reservation. The orebodies lie along the contact of granite and metamorphosed sedimentary rock and are controlled by faults and shear zones near the granite contact. In the oxidized zone the deposits consist mainly of the secondary uranium mineral meta-autunite; sooty uraninite and primary uranium minerals are known to occur at greater depths. Elevations in the mine area range from 2500 to 3500 ft. The rolling hills and low, rounded mountains are covered with grass and evergreen trees.

MICROCRACKS are often introduced into commercial metals during fabrication processes such as swaging, cold rolling, deep drawing, and welding. These microcracks act as strain concentrators and may be capable of causing premature catastrophic failure of a component or weld. The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether high-temperature annealing treatments may be capable of reducing or negating the detrimental effects of such existing microcracks. Internal microcracks, ranging from 0.1 to 0.85 mm in length and averaging 0.23 mm, were introduced into polycrystalline Fe-3 pct Si tensile specimens (0.155 mm grain size) by the cathodic charging of hydrogen.1'2 The typical appearance of such microcracks and their associated strain patterns (made visible by the technique of dislocation etch pitting3) is shown in Fig. 1. The stress fields of the dislocation loops formed during plastic relaxation stabilize the microcracks so that, when the internal hydrogen pressure is removed: the microcracks stay open, rather than disappear as perfectly elastic cracks would be expected to do.' As shown in Fig. 2, such stopped microcracks cause a 36 pct decrease in the macroscopic cleavage fracture strength at -196°C.

An analysis of the relationship between the deformation and recrystallization textures in face-centered-cubic metals is presented. The analysis assumes that orientations of the secondary as well as the primary textures are related to the deformation texture. The effect of alloying elements on the recrystallization texture of copper-base alloys is also discussed. ROTATIONAL relationships based on prior orientations have been used to derive both the primary and secondary recrystallization textures."" This similarity suggests that, if the secondary texture arises from grains formed during primary recrystallization, as proposed by Dunn: and if primary recrystallization derives its lineage from the deformation structure, then the orientations obtained in secondary recrystallization .as well as those obtained in primary recrystallization should be related to the deformation texture. The application of computers to the control and study of mineral processing operations such as grinding, classification and flotation has created an interest in simulation studies of these operations with mathematical models. Evidence of this interest is confirmed by papers presented at the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium held concurrently with the Fall Meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers in Salt Lake City, September 17-19, 1969. Proceedings of this symposium, entitled A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry. were edited by Alfred Weiss and published by SME. Two sections of this book are devoted to computer application and simulation of mineral processing operations. In the area of comminution, several papers were presented at the International Computer Symposium. The size-discretized batch grinding model was described, and its application to the simulation of batch grinding, locked-cycle grinding and closed circuit grinding were discussed1. Freeh, Horst and Kellner2 approached simulation using a steepest ascent parameter-fitting technique, while Schoner3 considered the dependence of the elements of the mill matrix and classifier matrix on operating conditions, especially the feed rate.

CONSTRUCTION of the long projected Moffat tunnel, on the Denver & Salt Lake R. R., between Tolland and Irving, Colorado, is now actually and actively progressing. This 6.1-mile bore through the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of about 9200 ft., will eliminate 33 1/3 miles of probably the most tortuous standard-gage track in the world, and at the same time will avoid the necessity for crawling over the snow-bound continental divide at an elevation of 11,660 ft Completion of the tunnel within the stipu-lated four years, is expected to nave an immediate effect on the develop-ment of the known coal fields in north-western Colorado, already penetrated at Craig, the present terminus of the road, while it will also enable the railroad to carry out the original designs of its founder, David H. Moffat, for through traffic from farther west. The intention now is to accomplish the latter object by an extension from McCoy following the canon of the Grand River down to a connection with the Denver & Rio Grande at Dotsero. Legal impediments to the financ-ing of the tunnel having been removed by action of the Colorado legislature in April, 1922, the Moffat Tunnel Improvement District issued bonds to the amount of $6,720,000 which have been widely and quickly distrib-uted through a New York banking house. Responsi-bility for the execution of the project has been vested in the Moffat Tunnel Commission, to which a board of consulting engineers has been appointed for carrying out the details of administration. This board includes D. W. Brunton and L. D. Blauvelt, of Colorado, and J. Vipond Davies and J. Waldo Smith, of New York; R. H. Keays, who has managed large tunnel projects in New York, is chief engineer for the Commission.

An experimental study of the process parameters controlling the selective agglomeration of raw coal slurries is described. Particular attention has been paid to the influence of input variables on agglomerate size and process kinetics. These factors were considered to be of paramount importance as they determine the selection and sizing of the process equipment. The variables studied include oil addition, pulp density, agitation rate and particle size of the feed. The results have been qualitatively interpreted in terms of a classical reaction kinetic model.

In 1974, iron pellet production in the Great Lakes region reached the 53-million-tpy level, accounting for more than 88% of the nation's pellet production. By 1978, pellet output from the Great Lakes district will climb to at least 78 million tpy. To achieve this 50% increase in output, the US iron and steel industry is investing at least $1.25 billion in new mines and pelletizing plants, mostly in Minnesota and Michigan. The biggest effort is concentrated in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota, the heart of the US steel industry's major iron ore source: here, plans for two new taconite plants-one by Hibbing Taconite Co., and the other by Inland Steel Mining Co.-and three major expansions of existing facilities are already under way to boost Minnesota's total iron pellet capacity from the current 41.2 million tpy to 65 million tpy by 1978. The facilities being expanded are those of US Steel Corp. (Minntac operations), Eveleth Taconite Co., and National Steel Pellet Co.

At Weed Heights, Nev., precipitation plays a major role in the plant operation. Almost two-thirds of the present copper production is leach-precipitation plant copper. The entire plant complex processes about 135,000 tons of low grade copper ore per week. Of this tonnage, 49,000 tons of about 0.78% sulfide ore are treated in the concentrator. This is handled in the conventional manner of crushing, grinding, and concentration of the copper sulfide by flotation.

When I first went to Arizona in 1925, mining was primarily an underground job. Ajo, Sacramento Hill in Bisbee and Jerome were the only open pit operations in the state. Thousands of men, however, were employed in underground mining at Morenci, Miami, Inspiration, Globe, Ray, Bisbee, and Superior. The grade of ore in the larger operations was about 1-1/2% copper while a few of the smaller ones mined ore better than 2% Cu. In Utah, the Bingham pit was doing well and growing; in Montana, the vein mines of Butte still yielded ore running 6% Cu.

THE term "segregation," as here used, means the separation of certain natural resources into groups, consisting of one or more members, with the idea that when thus segregated, each group may be more easily and effectively administrated. We may, for example, consider surface rights as distinct from underground rights, and stop there; or we may go further, and deal separately with timber, water, and agricultural rights, or, going underground, we might deal separately with such groups as precious and base metals, clay, oil, gas, etc. The present paper contemplates only the separation so far as practicable, for administrative purposes, of surface from mineral rights. "Classification," in this paper, has reference to the groups into which the government has divided, is dividing, or will hereafter divide its natural resources; first, into the broad classes of mineral and agricultural lands; and, second, into coal, oil, phosphate, brine lands, etc., the central idea being the separation into natural groups for the purpose of simplifying administration and for the purpose of encouraging maximum development and minimum waste. The two subjects are in some respects quite distinct, but as my argument develops, I think it will be obvious why they are discussed in the same paper.

Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 are reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr2O3 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO- and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr(VI) and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr(VI) reduction can be represented by the expression -d [Cr(VI) ]/dt = k[Cr(VI)]0.5[R], where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mol (43,000 Btu per lb mol). Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C (428°F). With these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203, is formed. With HCHO, significant reduction of Cr(VI) occurs at about 80° to 100° C (176° to 212° F). The product is an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr203. Solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo(VI) and W(VI) can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels.

During the past year the Committee on Coal and Coke has been collecting data concerning various phases of the bituminous industry about which considerable misinformation has been circulated even, in some cases, through the coal trade papers. The data here presented have been compiled by various members, from the most authentic sources available and, where possible, cover the period 1913-1924. They will enable comparisons to be made within the industry, and of this and other industries, and will explain some of the differences between conditions existing now and in the prewar period. Capacity and Over-development The capacity of bituminous mines is frequently stated at figures ranging between 800,000,000 to 1,400,000,000 tons per year. Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from U. S. Geological Survey sources but partly from U. S. Coal Commission reports. Column 3 gives the mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date, as estimated from the data published by the U. S. Geological Survey. This is calculated for each State by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators (multiplying average men employed by total days worked at each mine) and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method—one that the total number of men employed is used, instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. The first objection is answered by the fact that the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and while this number is always from 12 to 20 per cent. more than are actually working, this condition exists at all times, although it is worse at times of maximum output. Few coal men will agree with the conclusion that the use of 308 days is correct, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate of production as when it is working part time, and the opinion is

This section includes the common calcium titano-silicate, Tiianite; also a number of silicates which contain titanium, but whose relations are not altogether clear; further the titanate, Perovskite, and niobo-titanate, Dysanalyte, which is intermediate between Perovskite and the species Pyrochlore, Micro- lite, Koppite of the following section. In general the part played by titanium in the many silicates in which it enters is more or less uncertain. It is probably in most cases, as shown in the preceding ages, to be taken as replacing the silicon; in others however, it seems to play the part of agaaic element; in schorlomite (p. 510) it may enter) in both relations.

During 1918, the activities of the United Engineering Society, the Library, the Engineering Foundation, and Engineering Council Were deeply affected by the war and much important war work Was done in our building. The endowment of Engineering Foundation was increased to $300,000 by an additional gift of $100,000 from Ambrose Swasey. By bequest of Dr. James Douglas, the American Institute of Mining Engineers received an endowment of $100,000, the income of which Will be expended in the maintenance of its library (now a part of the joint library). The Library Service Bureau has gained steadily; its business for 1918 amounted to nearly $10,000. Indexing of current engineering literature has been undertaken in conjunction With the Founder Societies and the Index is being printed in their publications. This service has been extended to the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Mining Institute. The expense is borne by the Societies. In this connection the American Society of Mechanical Engineers has purchased the Engineering Index heretofore published by "Industrial Management." In June the Westinghouse and General' Electric Co. donated to the United Engineering Society their Patent Con¬trol Library of about 8000 volumes. Other noteworthy gifts Were a collection of 370 pieces relating to patent litigations, from Jesse M. Smith, and Dr. William Paul Gerhard's collection on gas engineering, transferred by the American Gas Association.
