The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.'-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. X-ray powder patterns showed no oxide and otherwise agreed with those found by Haraldsen7 for iron sulfide with 50.00 at. Pct

A detailed description of the smelting and refining operations of the Amax-Homestake Lead Toller's smelter at Buick, Missouri. This is one of two completely new lead smelting and refining operations to go into operation in the United States in over forty years. Incorporated into the operation are the new methods and equipment which have been developed and lend themselves to the particular metallurgy of this plant. The text, as well as the statistical data presented, represent actual current practice after 22 months of operation, and although the metallurgy is considered to be relatively simple, several metallurgical problems unique to Missouri concentrates are discussed.

Perhaps this Index is the most useful volume the Institute has ever published. At least, it is likely to be referred to more frequently and by more people than any other single volume. It covers the contents of 27,058 pages of TRANSACTIONS in addition to special volumes, MINING AND METALLURGY and sundry pamphlets (T.P.'s) that were not subsequently included in the TRANSACTIONS. In the 54 years from 1871 to 1925 the Institute published 72 volumes; in the following ten-year period covered by this index it published 57 volumes, including TRANSACTIONS and special publications sponsored by the Rocky Mountain and Seeley Mudd Memorial Funds. These include the complete series for the Institute of Metals, Iron and Steel, and Coal Divisions, and all of the volumes on Petroleum Development and Technology. Indexing is an exacting task at best; it is something of an art. And a composite index like this, covering a wide range of subjects contained in volumes appearing over a period of ten years, presents added problems. Miss Katharine Lovell developed the system of indexing as the years went along, and did most of the original work. Mrs. Harriet K. Broughton, under Miss Lovell's direction, sorted and organized the accumulation of 33,000 cards on which the entries were made. For five years the Institute has needed a cumulative index badly; but until this year the Directors have not felt justified in authorizing publication. The delay has caused much inconvenience in the past; but to some extent this will be compensated by the great advantage of being able to find items covering the entire ten-year period in a single volume.

Estimation of local recoveries is an important issue in a selective mining operation. Two techniques, probability kriging and multigaussian kriging, are applied to estimate local recoveries at Jerritt Canyon. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in light of the results. Both methods provide simple and satisfactory solutions to the problem of estimating local recoveries. Consequently, they can be useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

The United States Bureau of Mines established at Bruceton, Pa., in 1909, an experimental mine, for the purpose of testing the means of preventing and limiting mine explosions. During the last ten years numerous explosions have been caused to originate in this mine for investigative purposes and the rate of propagation of the explosion wave, the pressure developed per unit of area by the explosions, and the general results of the explosions have been carefully recorded and studied. Means of preventing mine explosions or of limiting them to the areas in which they originate have been developed. A great deal of valuable information has been derived from the work in this mine and much more useful and Valuable information will be obtained in the future. The writer would plead, not for the opening of experimental mines in all the important coal-producing fields in the United States, but for the opening of demonstration mines, or mines in which experiments could be made with the various details of coal mining. The United States Department of Agriculture has established, in nearly every state, stations that undertake experimental work for the benefit of the agricultural interests. In addition, small demonstration plats are set aside, in suitable locations in the farming districts, where various crops are grown under scientific direction, so that the faimers in the neighborhood can note the results obtained and profit thereby. Something like this should be done for the coal-mining induatry. If experimental or demonstration mines were established, methods of working adapted to local conditions could be worked out. Owing to competition in the same markets, small capitalization, or low profits, it may be an utter impossibility for any one company to try a new method of mining. Labor conditions may prevent the trial of a new method of working. It may be impossible or inadvisable to disturb existing working conditions for fear of causing trouble among the miners through real or fancied changes in the scale of wages. The first and most important investigation to be undertaken in these demonstration mines would be the trial of various methods of working coal mines until a satisfactory plan had been demonstrated for each

The Benedict-Webb-Rmbin equation of state was used in digital computer programs to make rapid determinations of natural gas equilibrium phase compositions. Mixture components were the nine hydrocarbons, methane through heptane. Comparative tests were made with data from field separators, plant exchangers and literature sources. For most tests made, the B-W-R equations predrcted component K-vallles, mixture enthalpies and phase aensities within tile accuracy of available correlations for rune-component mixtures: significant deviations were noted when mixtures contained components heavier than heptune. INTRODUCTION Rapid, accurate methods for calculating the properties of hydrocarbon mixtures are needed for predicting the behavior of natural gas processes. For example, because of the common use of two-phase separation methods in gas proccssing, calculations must be made for the density and composition of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases. In addition, predictions must often be made for the temperature and pressure changes associated with the flow of single- and two-phase natural gas fluids through heat exchangers, chokes and turbines. The complex nature of non-ideal mixtures makes rigorous calculations for these natural gas properties difficult and time-consuming. Natural gas properties have conventionally been determined with generalized data correlations. These correlations, such as the K-values presented in the NGAA Equilibrium Ratio Data Book, are usually based on some average property of the mixture and have proven to give satisfactory estimates for the properties of most oil and gas systems. Digital computers, however, have not only increased the utility of these correlations, but also have made practical the use of equations of state for calculating the properties of natural gases. Potentially, if basic pure component data are available, all the desired thermodynamic properties of mixtures can be derived from a single equation of state describing the mixture. Currently. the best equation of state for describing the behavior of pure, light hydrocarbons over single-and two-phase regions, both below and above critical pressure, is that of Benedict. Webb and Rubin.' The equation contains eight constants which are determined by empirically fitting the equation to pure-component PVT data. Benedict and his co-workers presented the clevelopment of their equation as early as 1940.2 The B-W-R equation is a modification of the Beattie-Bridgeman equation of state and gives better PVT predictions than the Beattie equation at densities above the critical density. Benedict et al. made the equation applicable to mixtures by relating the mixture constants to composition and the constants for pure compounds. These authors, in a serics of articles in 1951,' showed the accuracy of the B-W-R equation when applied to light hydrocarbons and their simple mixtures, and demonstrated the equation's utility for making vapor-liquid equilibria calculations. Since its inception, the B-W-R equation has been the subject of many papers. Numerous additions and modifications have been proposed,'-',"'-':' the purpose of most being to improve the equation's ability to predict PVT properties of specific mixture systems. In 1959, Opfell, Pings and Sage summarized much of the work on the B-W-R equation in their book on equations of state." Since natural gases are primarily mixtures of light hydrocarbons, the B-W-R equation is a natural choice for an equation of state to compute both phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of natural gases. COMPARED with the equipment used in most industrial processes, the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. This discussion of the physics and chemistry of the individual refractory materials will keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" CAUSES OF FAILURE The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance : 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. Spalling. 6. Mechanical breakage. Reaction with Iron Oxides and Slag. Reaction with iron oxides and slag is by far the most important cause of failure. Liquid iron oxide comes near to being the "universal solvent" sought for by the alchemists. Among the materials commonly used in the open-hearth furnace, magnesia has the greatest resistance to this liquid and fireclay the least. The relations of iron and oxygen at high temperatures are illustrated in Fig 14-18. The liquid iron oxide that forms wherever iron is in contact with air or combustion gases cannot be given a definite formula. The percentage of oxygen at steelmaking temperatures may range from 21 to 28 (iron 79 to 72), depending upon the temperature and the oxygen pressure and also upon whether or not the liquid is in equilibrium with metallic iron. Localized open pit slope failure was avoided as an apparent result of a practical rock mechanics program conducted at the Twin Buttes copper operation. The key to the program was the application of cable bolting, a technique that artificially supports open pit slopes using properly installed post-tensioned cables. As a result of the research and testing program, extensions of the cable bolting principal became significantly apparent. • The economics of artificial stabilization appear to be overwhelmingly favorable, and • Best practical applications are "final" pit slopes, slopes beneath permanent structures and potentially slope failing areas. Success of this research is manifested by the fact that similar stabilization systems are presently under consideration for Twin Buttes as well as other open pit operations.

A computer program has been developed which will locate the economic limits of an open-pit mine and also designate which ore and waste blocks to remove per period (years or quarters) to maximize the discounted cash flow over the life of the mine. A set of operating constraints was carefully selected so that the following functions are controlled: (1) the removal of overburden by preproduction and production stripping exposes a fixed amount of ore; (2) a constant manpower and equipment usage is insured (except for trucks); (3) the tons of mill ore, concentrate, and stockpiled ore are regulated; (4) the number and extent of shovel moves are minimized; (5) the grindability of the rock is considered as well as the variable haulage cost caused by variable haulage distances and depths; and (6) the size of the shovel working area is regulated. As many as 50 alternate schedules can be produced per computer run. They are arranged in descending order starting with the best solution.

INTRODUCTION Since 1975, Union Carbide Corporation has been conducting uranium exploration in southwestern South Dakota. This program has resulted in the discovery of an ore body about eight miles north of Edgemont in Fall River County. The site which was previously mined for uranium in the 1950's and 1960's consists of 950 lode claims (approximately 20,000 acres) and is within the Black Hills National Forest. Preliminary development plans indicate that fewer than 200 surface acres will be involved in the mining and heap leaching of the ore. The ore occurs in both the Fall River and Lakota formations. The exploration to date has developed something in excess of two million tons of ore averaging -0.1% U308. About 75% of the ore is expected to be mined from underground with 25% coming from five to seven small pits. The surface mining will be extensions of previously mined areas with a disturbance of 35-40 new acres near 35-40 previously disturbed acres requiring a total reclamation of 70-80 acres. Several options for processing the ore including conventional milling by UCC, conventional milling in joint venture with another producer, and heap leaching are under consideration. This paper is concerned with the preliminary assessment of the heap leaching option based on the limited test work conducted on surface samples and on available cores from the deeper ones. The final design for a commercial operation will not be available until an underground bulk sample has been obtained and evaluated. Union Carbide has been operating heap leach facilities commercially since 1973 at Gas Hills, Wyoming and Maybell, Colorado. The Anaconda Co. has two economic uses for the drainage water from its underground mines in the district of Butte, Mont. One is the precipitation of copper, which the company has been accomplishing at the Leonard precipitating plant for many years, and the other is the leaching of the Berkeley pit discard, where millions of tons of leach material have accumulated. The acidic mine drainage water is an ideal leaching medium for the latter purpose, but the solids and colloidal material suspended in the water must be removed before it can be applied to the low-grade Berkeley leach dump. For this reason, it is important for Anaconda to have an efficient means of cleaning mine drainage. Such a means has been found and tested at one mine and is now to be incorporated in a new central pumping station the company is planning at the 3900-ft level of the Kelley mine. This plant is to be activated in early 1967 and will replace the antiquated four-lift High Ore mine pumping plant which was designed and installed before tailing backfill was adopted. The new plant will feature eight pumps with a total capacity of 8000 gpm in a single lift against a total dynamic head of 4100 ft. For the most efficient and economical operation of the plant it is imperative that all possible mud be removed from the drainage water before pumping.

The extensive employment of nonmetallic minerals antedates the use of metals, but only within the last two decades has the production of nonmetals begun actually to keep pace with the complicated activities which characterize the so-called Machine Age. The economic changes ushered in by the Industrial Revolution were reflected first in an increased demand for metals and for fuels. In the modern sense, therefore, the nonmetallic mineral industries are new and afford new opportunities for engineer and economist alike. A certain amount of caution is indicated, therefore, before attempting to apply ready-made formulas to the problems of these industries. Economics is not an exact science. In the field of production technology where the number of variables is fairly well known, the principles of economics are readily applicable, but as the student proceeds through the province of marketing into the unexplored regions of psychology and sociology he must distinguish carefully between scientific reasoning and purely metaphysical speculation, even when the latter masquerades as economics. The present paper attempts to prove no preconceived theorems and is designed primarily to stimulate careful thinking on sundry neglected phases of these industries. An attempt is made to differentiate the general problems into single aspects which afford promise of being comprehended separately; also, some fundamental statistical data are presented, but merely to indicate a method of scientific approach applicable to more intensive studies. Definition Before discussing the economics of the nonmetallic mineral industries, it is appropriate to consider what we mean when we say "nonmetallic minerals." This term, inasmuch as it is merely a negative description, is somewhat loose and ambiguous and gives rise to questions in regard to minerals that, like chromite or bauxite, are alternatively classed either as nonmetallic or as metallic minerals (or ores). Since the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on the south. The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. In the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860 ft. (567 m.)l been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian, Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table I), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term "potash" originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first U.S. patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 20.4 million short tons K2O produced in the world in 1970 (Eilertsen, 1971 ) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K,O, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1 .O% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K,O) . Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and meta- morphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such de- posits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of sea-water or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in [Table 1]. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971).

Geographical Distribution 'he most important known deposits in Australia of what are commonly referred to as the beach-sand minerals are along the most easterly part of the Australian coast, between Southport, 17 miles north of the Queensland-New South Wales border, and Ballina, 50 miles south of the border, and most of the production has come from this area (Fig I). Smaller deposits are known to occur farther to the south at intervals for several hundred miles, and beaches have been worked at Yamba, 96 miles south and Woolgoolga, 150 miles south of the border and at Swansea, 60 miles north of Sydney. Important deposits have been shown to exist on north Stradbroke Island and others have been located farther to the north, as far as Tin Can Bay at the south end of Frazer Island. (Fig 2). Table I gives the list of operators with the location of their deposits and workings, their approximate maximum monthly capacity expressed in tons of heavy mineral produced by their concentrating plants before separation into individual mineral concentrates, their methods of mining and concentrating the minerals, and the products obtained. This table applies as of June 1948, but all the operators are remodeling or improving their plants and plant practices will be modified accordingly. In addition, active boring campaigns have been carried out by Alluvial Gold, Ltd., of Sydney, in the Cudgen-Cudgera area, and by Zinc Corporation Ltd., of Melbourne, on Stradbroke Island, and in other places. Physiography Submergence of the order of 100 to 200 ft at the close of the Pleistocene period left the pre-existing hills as promontories and the valleys as deep inlets. Wave action has built bay-bars and sandspits in a northerly direction from the headlands, and lakes and marshes have formed between these bars and the initial post-submergence coast line. These lakes and swamps have been or are being filled in by river-borne sediments or wind-blown sand. Beasley1 has presented evidence that suggests a recent emergence of the coast line of about 10 ft. The evidence for this belief is the presence of a black sand seam 1/3 mile inland and 17 ft above sea level (Fig 3), and although it is not entirely certain that this seam is of beach formation and owes nothing to windblown concentration, other evidence supports the suggestion of recent emergence. Such emergence would undoubtedly aid the formation of bars and sandspits and the easterly progress of the beach front, leaving a series of parallel dunes (Fig 4). This belt of north-south coastal dunes ranges up to 56 mile in width and as many as 15 lines of dune have been counted (Fig 3). The foredune is generally the highest, upto 25 ft high, and there is in many places a flat platform in front of the dune known as the berm. Methods evolved at Kellogg have had primarily in view the safety of workmen and complete recovery of the ore; it is believed that these results have been secured at a minimum cost. The ore in the Bunker Hill mine is of good grade, relatively speaking; much of it is quite rich and no mining method would be successful which did not recover all of the ore. It would be possible to work certain of the orebodies by shrinkage methods, or some form of top-slicing, at probably lower costs than by the methods now applied, but the shapes of the orebodies are so irregular that satisfactory extraction of the ore in all its ramifications would be extremely difficult. In past years, much high-grade ore has been lost in blasting, due to the unskilful use of powder in a galena ore, which, by reason of its brittle-ness and great weight, tends to scatter widely. Any method by which large masses of ore and waste are broken together will result in an imperfect recovery of the ore, and whenever large masses are broken, ore and waste will unavoidably fall down together; ore and waste thus become entangled and, although a pile of broken material may seem to have been well picked over, quantities of ore will inevitably be lost. This fact has been shown by persons reworking the filling in stopes that were mined by methods defective in the foregoing particulars. Safety of the men is secured by avoiding large openings, and by working mainly under timber, and at small faces at close range and easily inspected. In former years the principal source of serious accidents was "falls of ground;" it is now over seven years since a serious accident has occurred from this cause. The most prolific source of accidents during recent years has been "timber and tools," workmen being struck by timbers passed into the stope from the level above; this danger has been greatly reduced by compressed-air warning whistles and the fencing in of dangerous areas. There seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been somet-hing mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-exploaions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The U. S. Geological Survey Testing Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It can, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible to the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude.
