The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, Ill., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four coyentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade Auorspar.2-3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 19214 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Alines5 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. THE present program of increased production of armament and lend-lease material for mechanized war has created a problem for the shops that must do the machining. They have naturally turned to the steel producers to provide them with a steel that can be accurately machined with the greatest possible speed. The adding of sulphur to steel as an aid to machinability has long been practiced; however, it may cause red shortness in rolling and may result in billets with seams and cracks, which must be removed before rolling can be continued. This conditioning of billets slows down production and adds to the cost of making steel. Experience with various grades of sulphur steel made to different specifications has shown that Bessemer sulphur steels roll better than similar grades made in the open hearth, and also that low-carbon steels that are open or semi-killed as tapped roll better than completely deoxidized or killed steels. This has led to the belief that oxygen plays an important part in the rolling qualities of sulphur-bearing steels. It is generally held that the red shortness of sulphur steels is due to the low melting point of the sulphide compounds that separate out at the grain boundaries when the steel solidifies. At the rolling temperature of steel these sulphide compounds melt and cause cracking. ADDING SULPHUR AS A SULPHITE These difficulties can be avoided if sulphur is introduced into the steel by means of an anhydrous sulphite, such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite, which-upon decomposition-forms sulphur dioxide. It is assumed that, in this case, the oxygen of the sulphur dioxide forms part of the sulphide inclusions in the steel, and raises their solidification temperature enough so that the formation in the steel of a low-melting eutectic is prevented. The result is the prevention of hot shortness and a more uniform distribution of inclusions. Fig, I shows photomicrographs of steels made with sulphur, while Fig, 2 illustrates the structure of steels made with sodium bisulphite. These samples were cut from the steels as cast-that is, before rolling and were polished and lightly etched to bring out the grain boundaries. Fig. I shows that sulphide inclusions segregate more or less at the grain boundaries, and it can be seen how the continuity of these low-melting inclusions would cause red shortness. Fig. 2 shows that the sulphide inclusions are more or less uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. This arrangement of inclusions has no apparent effect on the rolling qualities of a steel. This statement has been substantiated by the observation of the rolling of over 6000 tons of steel made with a sulphite addition. IT is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.1-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.1-6, It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by the use of acute dies.2 The actual stress distribution in drawn .tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7-9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process: Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal.1-10 MATERIALS AND PREPARATION The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.‡ This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2 -in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during sinking, as previously observed 4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The reductions mentioned throughout this investigation do not consider this fact, but are reductions of the outside diameter. For the evaluation of the residual stress two fundamentally different methods were used. The approximation method1,11 of splitting a certain length of tubing was employed to obtain a bird's-eye view of the effect of various drawing conditions on the circumferential stress measured by the diameter change occurring on splitting. The converting of lead matte is not a general practice at lead smelters, therefore a description of the methods used and developments made during the past 20 years in converting both lead and copper matte at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. in Utah may be of interest. The Tooele converting plant consists of five electrically operated stands in which are used 96 by 150-in. horizontal, barrel-type converters each of about 10 tons capacity. The main converter building is served by a 60-ton electric traveling crane and the casting shed by a 30-ton crane. Copper matte is tapped from near-by reverberatory furnaces into launders that deliver into 8-ton ladles on the converter floor. Lead matte is brought from the blast furnaces, about li mile away, in 5-ton ladles mounted on trucks, hauled by electric locomotives. As the Tooele copper plant has never been a producer of much copper, and has been Irregular in its operation, the original converting plant with its small converters has been adcquate, although decidedly out of step with large, modern plants. Tonnage figures in this paper are for comparison with each other only, as they are not at all in line with prevailing tonnages at larger plants today. The reasons for the changes made in converting practice at Tooele, as well as the improvements in the results obtained as these changes were perfected, are given in the following pages. Lead-matte Converting, 1914 to 1927 In 1914, Oscar M. Kuchs wrote a paper for the Transactions,' describing in detail the lead-matte converting methods at Tooele up to that time. The method perfected only a few months before Mr. Kuchs' paper was written consisted, briefly, of blowing the lead matte alone, without the addition of siliceous fluxing ores, to a point where the lead and zinc were largely eliminated by volatilization. IN a paper read before the Institute of Metals, Rosenhain 1 described a new type of furnace designed primarily for the thermal analysis of metals by the inverse-rate method and used by him in the metallurgical department of the National Physical Laboratory with considerable success. In his discussion of this furnace, Rosenhain pointed out some difficulties met with in its operation, such as uniformity of rate of heating or cooling being inadequate for the degree of accuracy aimed at. To overcome this difficulty, he suggested, in place of motor propulsion, a gravity drive controlled by a"hydraulic cylinder with a relief valve whose width of opening can he regulated to allow of any desired rate of motion." The authors, in constructing a thermal-analysis furnace of Rosenhain's type, have therefore followed this suggestion and also added certain features that increase somewhat the convenience and simplicity of its operation. Requests for information regarding this furnace and the highly satisfactory results obtained from its use, it is believed, justify describing its construction and operation in sufficient detail to make possible its duplication or improvement. Description of Furnace.-The details of the furnace construction are shown in Fig. 1, which is drawn to scale. The heating tube is of /4 in. (6.35 mm.) wall "alundum" heated at the upper end by seventeen turns of 0.52 mm. platinum wire, which is coated with "alundum" cement supplied for this purpose. The cement coating is essential when a high temperature (over 1000° C.) is required, as it prevents hot spots with the resulting burning out of the heater. This platinum-wire winding, unlike "nichrome," is entirely satisfactory for temperatures of at least 1000° C. It has been maintained at that temperature continuously for 2 months and shows no signs of deterioration. This temperature is maintained by a current of 5 amp. drawn from 30 volts potential, so its necessarily continuous operation is quite economical.

The hydrometallurgical application of thiourea in processing precious metal ores and concentrates has reached the development stage. This paper reviews recent technical literature covering the process development of thiourea leaching. In addition, recent fundamental contributions are discussed. Most of the interest in thiourea leaching has involved treating high grade concentrates that have sufficient value to just the use of thiourea as a reagent. An important development in thiourea technology is the addition of SO2 to the leaching solution. This procedure effectively reduces the decomposition of thiourea and eliminates the problems of passive surface layers that limit the leaching efficiency. Results for the thiourea leaching of a bulk sulfide concentrate and a residue from the autoclave leaching of a smelter flue dust are also reported. As determined by a standard bottle roll cyanidation test, the bulk concentrate was extremely resistive to cyanide leaching yielding only 16% gold and 2% silver extraction in 24 hours. Leaching with a relatively concentrated thiourea solution (1MCS (NH2)2) resulted in 83% gold and 75% silver extraction in four hours. With the treated flue dust residue, gold extraction was about 60%. Gold and silver extraction with cyanide was sensitive to both cyanide concentration and oxidizing conditions. Cyanidation resulted in 59% gold extraction and 77% silver extraction in 24 hours.

The indicator cards shown herewith were taken by the writer in June, 1877, from the water-pressure blowing engine of the Longdale Iron Co., at Lucy Selina Furnace, Longdale, Virginia. A description of' this engine with figures, and some indicator cards, was published by Washington Jones, Esq., Superintendent of the I. P. Morris Co.,* in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1877, to which those desiring a full account are referred, but for convenience the principal dimensions, etc., are given below. The machine consists of a pair of horizontal direct-acting blowing engines, connected at right angles to a common fly-wheel shaft. The blowing cylinders are 4 ft. diameter by 5 ft. stroke; the water cylinders were 18 in. diameter by 5 ft. stroke as built. Both water and blowing cylinders are double acting. The water valves are balanced piston valves, 18 in. diameter, moved directly by eccentrics on the fly-wheel- shaft. On the 6th of February 1684, Dr. Martin Lister mentioned at a meeting of the Royal Society1 that "brass is magnetical," and promised to give an account of that assertion at some other time. He repeated his promise but never fulfilled it, and it was left for William Arderon2 to show, in 1758, that brass could be made magnetic by hammering and that it would retain polarity after magnetizing. Twenty-seven years later Caval103,4 examined the matter in great detail. Working with cast calamine brass, he showed that it could be made magnetic by hammering and nonmagnetic by subsequent annealing at a red heat. He found that annealing at a very high temperature caused the samples to lose their magnetic quality permanently, even after subsequent cold-working, but that remelting and cold- working restored it. He encountered some samples of brass that could not be rendered - magnetic by any treatment. Experiments in which these were remelted with iron additions gave negative results, and Cavallo concluded that iron impurity was not the cause of the magnetism. He worked with 50-grain (3-gram) samples melted under the blowpipe, hence cooled very quickly. Bennet5 made whole crucible charges from copper and zinc, and found _ the resulting brass ingots to be magnetic only when iron had been added and then only after cold-working. All these observations applied to material in the cast condi- tion, in which coring would produce a continuous spectrum of composition and cooling would result in varying degrees of precipitation. This knowledge of the subject seems to have been forgotten in the nineteenth century. The older brass was made by the calamine process and frequently contained iron in amounts of 0.5 per cent or more, absorbed from the impure ore with which the copper and charcoal were heated in making the brass. When metallic zinc became available in commercial quantities, calamine brass gradually disappeared, and with it the knowledge of its curious magnetic properties. Only when sensitive apparatus replaced the compass needle of the earlier investigators could the effects be detected in relatively pure metal. The effect of cold-working in inducing ferromagnetism was rediscovered by Bitter8 in 1930 in a sample of impure copper, and this was confirmed by Lowance and Constant: Honda and Shimizu, l0,11 and others. In the same year, Tammann and Oelsen12 showed that copper-rich copper-iron alloys after certain heat-treatments could be rendered ferromagnetic or made more strongly ferromagnetic by cold-rolling. Kussman and Seeman13 showed that the change of susceptibility of relatively pure copper on cold-working was associated with the iron content, and concluded that actual precipitation of iron was caused by cold-working, which is a satisfactory theory until one considers the improbably high rate of diffusion that this would involve. Of the several interesting physical properties of clay which have claimed the attention of investigators in recent years, none is more important than the behavior of the material when heated to temperatures above those of dehydration. Some of the problems to be solved are: 1. The mineralogical changes that take place in firing. 2. The relation between temperature and change in constitution, shrinkage, porosity, etc. 3. The importance of the time factor, as duration of firing, either in reaching a given temperature, or of exposure to a constant temperature. Mineralogical Changes As a result of fusion, reactions take place between the constituents of a clay, which result in a reorganization of the mass, and the formation of new compounds. Of the new minerals developed, sillimanite is the one usually recorded, and has been referred to by a number of observers.' There appears to be a difference of opinion, however, regarding the temperature at which it is formed. Thus Klein2 notes that sillimanite forms only above 1300" C., while Mellor claims that it can develop below 1200" C., the difference in results being conditioned by the time factor. In Klein's experiments the test pieces were fired in 12 hr., while in Mel-lor's, the temperature rose from 800" to 1180" in 24 hr., and occupied the same time in cooling back to 800".

Foreword The three case histories and the liquid fuels planning scenario presented in this paper span a twenty year period, from the pioneering days of computers in the petroleum producing industry during the mid-fifties, to the energy crisis era of the seventies. Inasmuch as two of the main actors, Ian McKinnon and I, are featured in all three case histories, while I am currently involved in the fossil fuels scenario, this paper provides four related and personal spot readings along an evolutionary path: from the one dimensional technical domain to the multi-dimensional techno-socio-economic domain of computer applications in the petroleum industry. Coincident with this evolution in the direction of increasingly comprehensive and powerful computer applications, the evolution in hardware/software capability and in analytical power are also kept in perspective. The three case histories are: 1. The Bonnie Glen-Wizard Lake Case (Calgary, Alberta, 1955-1957); 2. The TransCanada-Great Lakes Gas Transmission Case (Ottawa-Washington, 1966); 3. The Westcoast Transmission - El Paso Pipelines Gas Export/ Import Case (Ottawa-Vancouver-Washington, 1966-1967). High grade manganese ores are utilized in metallurgical, chemical, and battery industries, whereas the low grade ores are not accepted for these purposes and hence get accumulated at the minehead. In the present study an attempt was made to solubilize the manganese value as its sulfate by roasting the low grade ore with a suitable sulfatizing agent followed by water leaching. The different parameters were determined in the laboratory scale. Based on these, kilogram scale experiments were conducted where an appreciable amount of manganese goes into solution during leaching.

This mine is operated at 4000 to 4500 tons daily through a single shaft, with one rock hoist and one senice hoist. Latest shaft construction is concrete with wooden dividers. Economics of drifters and air-leg drills are compared, as well as costs of shrinkage and sub-level stoping. Economy of large haulage equipment and underground crushing is shown. THE property of Kerr-Addison Gold Mines is located in the Larder Lake district of Ontario about 3 miles from the Quebec boundary on the highway between Kirkland Lake and Noranda. It is roughly 320 miles due north of Toronto and 365 miles north of Buffalo, N. Y. The property was staked in 1906 and after several development efforts finally came into continuous production at 500 tons per day in 1937. In 1939 the daily tonnage -was increased to 1200 and in 1941 to 2100 tons. At the end of the war, because of the shortage of labor, tonnage was down to 1100 tons per day, rising to 2200 in February 1947. A further plant expansion inaugurated in 1946 was completed by December 1948, bringing the capacity of the mine and mill to a production rate of 4000 tons per day. Current production, with 880 men employed, is 4400 tons per day. Changes in mining methods and equipment, required by the recently completed expansion program, have yielded interesting comparative results, some of which are described in this paper. Hoisting of ore and waste from the mine, as well as all service facilities for handling men and supplies underground, are provided for in a single vertical five-compartment shaft. Ore and waste are hoisted in 12½-ton skips in balance by a 14-ft diam hoist with drums 115 in. wide, grooved for 2?-in. wire ropes. This hoist, with a total rope pull of 85,000 lb, was designed to operate at a speed of 2600 ft per min to a depth of 4000 ft, hoisting 15 tons of ore in each skip. It is amplidyne-controlled and powered with dual drive dc motors of 2250-hp each, through flexible couplings to two pinion shafts, one on each side of the main gear. Each motor has a peak load rating of 4500-hp at point of greatest duty. Direct current power to the hoist motors is supplied from a motor generator set consisting of a 5000-hp synchronous motor driving two 1750-kw dc generators. The loading pockets used so far are at depths of 1500 and 2725 ft respectively. Consequently the present hoisting speed is 2000 ft per min and the skips capacity only 12½ tons. Now that the shaft has been deepened the new pockets at 3934 ft will be increasingly used so that the speed and the skip size will be increased up to original specifications as required. Some difficulty in meeting the required hoisting cycle is expected because of the shape of the skips. As now in use the cross-sectional dimensions of the inside of the skip are 4 ft 6 in. x 3 ft 8 in. To hold 121/2 tons, therefore, they are 14 ft 10 in. deep. Since the skips are the conventional overturning or Kim-berley type, considerable hoisting time is lost in retardation in entering the headframe dump and in acceleration when leaving. It is expected that to obtain the specified tonnage from this hoist when the skip size is increased to 15 tons it may be necessary to resort to bottom dump skips. This type of skip could reduce considerably the present excessive acceleration and retardation times. Analyses of the skip-hoisting operation are made monthly, and every effort is made to reduce controllable delays. For a nine-month period in 1951 such an analysis shows that the hoist was in operation 92.5 pct of the available time, which was allotted as shown in Table I. Overall hoisting costs, cage and skip, for the year 1951, averaged $0.168 per ton of ore milled. PRIOR to the World War most of the barite used in the United States for manufacturing lithopone and barium chemicals was imported. Germany, by virtue of an abundance of high-grade ore and low labor costs, was in a position to dominate the world market. With the cessa-tion of imports and with the war demand for barium chemicals, the barium chemical industry and the mining of barite became well; estab-lished in the United States. This industry has continued to expand because of the increasing use of lithopone. In 1914 the sales of domestic crude barite was 52,919 tons and in 1934 it was 209,850 tons. Barite deposits of economic importance occur in at least 20 states, but the principal producers in 1934 were Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, California and Arizona. The main mining centers are located near the crude barite markets of the three principal marketing districts-the Pacific Coast, the Midwestern area, and the Eastern area. The Pacific Coast is supplied entirely by California, Nevada, and Arizona. The Midwestern area uses most of the Missouri crude and a small amount from the southern states. The eastern market is the chief competitive area. Practically all of the imported crude is marketed there; also the bulk of the southern crude and ground barite. In addition, this area absorbs a small part of the Missouri crude and 80 per cent of the ground barite. Besides the advantage of low delivered costs and purity of product, the imported barite has commanded a price differential because it is soft rather than hard, like many of the domestic ores. The inherent physical properties of the southern ores remain, but the purity can be controlled to a great extent by beneficiation. Simple washing or gravity concentra-tion has sufficed in the past, but in many cases a more efficient process now becomes imperative to remove impurities not amenable to these methods. Certain deposits now being opened are of lower, grade and require more precise milling conditions. In some ores, the kind of impurities has changed as the mining advanced.

The slotted-templet method, which is based on the well-established radial-line principle, has made it possible to construct accurate mosaic maps at a cost comparable with that formerly charged for the average mosaic. It makes possible the securing of these results with far less ground control, which is always expensive. It has expanded widely the possible use of aerial photographs for mapping. Although a vertical or oblique aerial photograph is not a map, most of the information that is necessary for compiling a map is recorded in the photograph. Some ground controls or data are needed, the number and accuracy to be governed by the mapping method to be used and the scale and final accuracy desired in the finished map. Radial-line Control It is essential that the principle of radial-line control in the use of vertical aerial photographs be understood and accepted before any confidence in the slotted-templet method can be gained. A simple sketch and some enlargements showing the Empire Stale Building will serve to illustrate the cause of displacement of an image that is above the datum plane as recorded in the photograph. The top of the tower of the Empire State Building is directly above the base, and when the image of the top is shown almost two blocks away from the center of the base, it is evident that the image of the top of the tower is not the true location, and in this particular case we know where the true location is; namely, over the center of the base of the tower. If the top of the tower were the top of a hill 1250 ft. high, we would have no way of knowing by inspection the true position of the top of the hill, so it is very important to have a method whereby the true location of any such point can be determined, and thereby make it possible to convert the detail of an aerial photograph into accurate information for mapmaking.

The brittle fracture behavior of cold-worked sintered tungsten was studied over the temperature range 4.2° to 298°K using a high-sensitivity strain measuring system and electronfractography. Similar observations were made on a swaged electron beam zone-refined monocrystal. In sintered tungsten irreversible plastic deformation was observed during cyclic load-unload tests at stress levels well below the fracture stress for all temperatures, but general microyielding could be detected only down to 202°K. For the zone-refined samples macroyielding occurred at all test temperatures with evidence for twinning below -202°K. The fracture stress of the sintered tmgsten was virtually independent of temperature, while the zone-refined crystal showed a 2.3 times increase over the same temperature range. Electronfractography confirmed the presence of numerous rod-shaped and spherical submicroscopic voids which ranged in diameter from 1400 to 4300A in the sintered tungsten; no voids could be found in the zone-refined tungsten. Contrast effects observed on the replicas in the vicinity of certain voids indicated that plastic deformation could be induced by the local stress concentration. It has been suggested that the presence of these voids may be responsible for the low-temperature brittle failure of sintered tungsten. Based m this suggestim und on the evidence obtained here, a dislocatim model is presented to account for the brittle behavior of sintered tungsten. In this model slip, which is induced by the local high stress concentration in the region at the edge of a favorably oriented void, could cause the void to grow to a microcrack of critical size. STUDIES of brittle fracture in bcc metals have led to the well-known experimental relationships between grain size, yield stress, fracture stress, and temperature which have formed the basis for the various dislocation pile-up1-3 or interaction4'= models for slip-induced microcrack nucleation. While microcracks can be nucleated by deformation twins,6,7 there has been no direct evidence furnished by transmission electron microscopy to support conclusively either the Zener pile-up or Cottrell dislocation reaction models for producing micro-cracks in all "brittle" materials. In addition to the "inverse" grain size relationship for yield and fracture stresses the cottrel14 theory predicts that the fracture stress below the transition temperature should behave in a fashion similar to that of the yield stress above this temperature. Such behavior has been verified for several bcc metals.8-10 With reference to both grain size effects and the tem- perature dependence of the fracture stress below the transition temperature, the behavior of sintered tungsten appears anomalous. Early work by Bechtold and Shewrnon 11 showed no apparent temperature dependence of the fracture stress below the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). They attributed this result to the intergranular nature of the fractures observed. More recent work by Wronski and Four-deux12'13 on considerably purer material did not show any systematic relationship between the fracture stress and temperature below DBTT. The dependence of flow and fracture stresses on grain size is also not clearly established for sintered tungsten. Koo, for example, has shown that the DBTT for sintered tungsten depended chiefly on the annealing temperature and was relatively insensitive to the actual grain size achieved. Using electrofractography and transmission electron microscopy, Wronski and Fourdeuxl3 showed that numerous spherical and rod-shaped submicroscopic voids could be found in sintered tungsten but not in melted tungsten of nominally the same purity. They suggested that these voids could be responsible for the temperature insensitivity of the fracture stress below the DBTT. In the present work the temperature dependence of the fracture stress for high-purity commercially sintered tungsten has been determined. The presence of submicroscopic voids in sintered materials was confirmed, and these were studied in detail to examine the role they could play in nucleating brittle fracture. A dislocation model is suggested which could cause an inherent spherical void to lengthen into a Griffith crack of critical size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercially sintered tungsten rod was obtained in the as-swaged condition from Sylvania. A zone-refined crystal was obtained from the same source. This crystal was grown by giving three zone passes (at 25.4 cm per hr) to a sintered rod of high-purity tungsten. The rod axis prior to cold working was -15 deg from the [110] direction. Originally the zone-refined rod was -6 mm in diam; it was reduced to -3 mm by eight swaging passes, at high temperatures, with each step having about the same reduction of area. The final swaging step gave a 7.5 pct reduction of area at 1050°C. All swaging operations were performed in a hydrogen atmosphere. For the sintered rod a similar working schedule was employed. Metal-lographic examination of the sintered material revealed that the cold-worked structure had an apparent grain diameter of -25 u transverse to the swaging direction (obtained by the intercept method). In the longitudinal direction cold-worked grains were approximately 1.5 to 2 times their diameter. No distinct fiber structure could be observed optically for the zone-refined rod.
