IN CIRCLES where mining men are wont to fraternize, a statement often heard is: "Yes, I spent six (or two, or ten, or thirty) years down at 'Chuqui.' " This means Chuquicamata, the site in Chile of what in all probability is the world's largest deposit of copper ore. One hears similar remarks regarding Braden and Andes, and, in fact, regarding a score of other big mines in South America, Africa, and elsewhere, but Chuqui seems to lead the others as the locale of engineers who have done a stint in foreign countries. One reason probably is that it is the Anaconda Company's premier foreign operation. Because of its unusual size and the diversity of its operations a great many men are needed. It is a sort of training school for young engineers; but, also, Anaconda has sent down a great many mature members of its big organization for special assignments like metallurgical research or plant construction. Chuquicamata is about 150 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at an elevation of 9,500 ft. It is in an almost rainless desert country where the wind (it is alleged by some) blows most of the time. However, the copper mining entrepreneurs have done their best to make up for what nature has neglected to do in creating a pleasant environment for the people who operate the mines. These include about 160 "foreigners" of whom 86 are from the United States, most of them accompanied by their families. There are 165 Chileans on the staff. Comforts, conveniences, and many luxuries are provided to offset in some measure the disagreeable features of the climate. Nevertheless, as I have implied, engineers at Chuqui generally jump at the chance to become "alumni" when opportunity offers. At the same time, they appear to take pride in their alma mater.

The new geophone described herein was developed by Charles H. Hull, instrumentmaker of the Colorado School of Mines, and the writer. The first geophone was invented during the war for the purpose of detecting enemy sapping or underground mining operations and for locating enemy artillery. It is based on the principle of the seismograph—a heavy lead mass suspended by one or two diaphragms, which are clamped to an air-tight case. When the ground vibrates during the transmission of sound waves, the case moves with it while the so-called steady mass remains practically motionless. Attached to the top of the casing is a hose leading to an earpiece shaped like a stethoscope. When the mass and the diaphragm move up and down in the case, the air is compressed and rarified in the inside; thus the vibration is communicated as sound wave to the human ear. The geophone combines a surprising simplicity of construction with an extreme sensitivity. Other listening instruments were developed during the war, adaptations of the telephone and the microphone—that is, instruments operating through the medium of electricity—of which the so-called seismicrophone, an adaptation of the carbon-granule microphone receiver, probably has found the greatest application, but such instruments apparently have not proved as useful as the simple geophone despite obvious advantages arising from the use of electricity. The carbon receivers were more subject to extraneous noises and to what is called "frying," and they did not offer the advantage possessed by the geophone; namely, the simultaneous use of two receivers, which makes it possible to determine the location of the source of sound. During the war, the U. S. Bureau of Mines made a study of the geophone and of the propagation of sound waves through rock. These studies have been continued, as the earlier results proved the possibility of using the geophone in various non-military ways, principally in mining, and the results of these studies have been published.'

DURing the summer and winter of 1918 eleven standard rigs were erected in the United Kingdom to test the petroleum prospects of- ten structures, eight of which were in England and two in Scotland. By the fall of 1921 ten of the wells were completed; the remaining one, the D'Arcy in Scotland, was stopped some months later. The tests were deep ones, five of the wells being 4000 ft. or more, the rest varying in depth between 1810 and 3918 ft. The total footage drilled was 40,047 ft. The holes were put down with standard or cable tools purchased in the United States (except the boilers). The larger sizes of casing, 10-in. and above, were also from America, while the smaller sizes were secured in Scotland. The Hardstoft well in England found a small production of high-grade oil and the D'Arcy well also encountered what is reported as a favorable showing at a depth of 1810 ft. The Werrington and West Calder wells had to be abandoned on account of drilling difficulties. The Apedale well encountered great thicknesses of ash in the Carboniferous and had to be abandoned on account of depth. The results might be summarized by saying that of the ten structures drilled upon, two yielded encouraging showings; three cannot be considered as having been adequately tested; and five produced dry holes, although in some of these small oil showings and gas were met. The total cost of the work amounted to about half a million pounds sterling, which sum includes the cost of all equipment, subsequently sold by the government. The work, under the superintendence of V. L. Conaghan, took place for the most part in the period immediately following the war—a period of high prices, labor and transportation difficulties, and unsettled conditions generally; factors tending to retard the work and affect the costs. This plant is situated in the borough of Pottstown, on the banks of the Schuylkill river, between the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on a plot of about 125 acres, most of which is reserved for future extensions. About 45 acres are to be used for houses, 40 of which have already been built. The accompanying plan will give a clear idea of the general arrangement of the works. Beginning at the lower or eastern end, the first building is the basic-cinder grinding-plant. At present, it consists of a 2000 mm. Jenisch ball-mill (Kugelfallmühle) similar to those used so extensively for grinding basic cinder in Europe. It was built by Herman LÖhnert, of Bromberg. The mill is very simple in design, and efficient in execution. About 13 horse-power is required to run it, and the average output is 20,000 pounds in 10 hours. The best work we have done is 29,000 pounds in 10 hours, with perfectly dry cinder. From 95 to 98 per cent. of the product will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch, while from 70 to 75 per cent. will pass through a 150-mesh sieve. The mill has been in service since last March, part of the time on double-turn, and the renewals and repairs have been very slight. The product of the plant is sold as a fertilizer. It runs from 18 to 24 per cent. in phosphoric acid, about 14 of which is reverted. The merits of this fertilizer were explained by Mr. W. H. Morris, at the Baltimore meeting of February, 1892 (Trans., xxi., 232), and by Mr. W. B. Phillips, at the Birmingham meeting of 1888 (Trans., xvii., 84). The results obtained by its use in Europe, where over 600,000 tons were used last year, are well known. Near the cinder-grinding plant will be situated the new machineshop, which is now being erected. The next buildings contain the brick-making plant and ovens.

The discovery of a Carlin-type gold deposit at Cortez, Nevada, in 1966 can be attributed directly to the use of geochemical exploration techniques. Most mineral deposits owe their discovery to geologic concepts, geologic analysis, and luck, but at Cortez, geochemistry as an exploration tool played the clearly dominant role in discovery. Of course, the economic significance of the discovery had to be determined by exploration and development drilling. The story of the discovery began in 1959 when field work was initiated on a new project, "Geochemical Halos Utah and Nevada," by R.L. Erickson and A. P. Marranzino for the US Geological Survey. The Cortez district was selected for geochemical work because it was an area with good geologic control where we could address the problem of how to prospect in barren outcrops for concealed ore deposits in potentially favorable structures (buried thrust zones) or favorable host rocks in the subsurface. Geologic mapping of the Cortez 15-min quadrangle, just being completed by Gilluly and Masursky (1965), showed that the quadrangle contained excellent exposures of both the upper and lower plates of the Roberts Mountains thrust fault, a major structural feature of north-central Nevada. Roberts (1960) had noted that a number of mining districts were associated with windows in the thrust. In 1959, Erickson and Marranzino did some reconnaissance rock sampling and spring-water sampling in the siliceous clastic rocks of the upper plate of the thrust. Results of this reconnaissance prompted a full-scale sampling program in 1960 in the upper plate rocks on the west flank of the Cortez window. Results of the investigation showed that anomalously high concentrations of metals occur in the upper plate rocks, and further, that the distribution of metals is fault controlled and shows a pronounced zoning pattern (central copper zone; intermediate zinc, copper, and lead zone; and outer arsenic zone). The anomalies were interpreted as primary leakage halos that originated from metal occurrences in the thrust zone or in carbonate rocks below the thrust and moved upward along normal faults that cut both upper and lower plate rocks. Erickson gave a talk about these anomalies in the summer of 1961 to the local AIME Section in Reno, Nevada; two short reports were published that year-" Geochemical Anomalies in the Upper Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1961) and "Hydrogeochemical Anomalies in Four Mile Canyon Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson and Marranzino, 1961). These releases prompted blanket staking in the area by several small companies. In 1963, geologic and geochemical mapping were started by the USGS in the lower plate carbonate rocks of the Cortez window west of the quartz monzonite stock at Mount Tenabo and north of the old townsite of Cortez. The results of the work showed anomalously high concentrations of arsenic, antimony, and tungsten in jasperoid, fracture filling, and shear zones in Silurian and Devonian carbonate rocks. The anomalous area was about 1.6 km (I mile) long and 300 m (1000 ft) wide. A brief report, "Geochemical Anomalies in the Lower Plate of the Roberts Thrust Near Cortez, Nevada" (Erickson et al., 1964a), was published in 1964. During this same time period, 1959-1964, several exploration or mining companies were active in the general area (chiefly mapping geology and acquiring property). In 1964, American Exploration and Mining Company (Amex) concluded that the entire Cortez district was worthy of an extensive exploration effort involving drilling as well as geologic, geophysical, and geochemical studies. To carry out the program, Amex formed a joint venture group with the Bunker Hill Company, Vernon Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources. Their early efforts were directed to the upper plate rocks and to the lower levels of the old Cortez silver mine. The group also drilled some shallow rotary assessment holes adjacent to the area of the arsenic, antimony, tungsten anomaly in lower plate carbonate rocks described in Erickson et al. (1964a). Assay results from these holes offered little or no encouragement to the joint venture group. Splits of these drill samples were made available to the USGS. FIG. 1 shows a volute aging break which developed spontaneously in a hardened and tempered steel helmet between 19 and 38 days after it had been tested ballistically. A similar break, shown in Fig. 2, developed spontaneously in a similar helmet about 40 days after the ballistic testing. In this case the rupture occurred abruptly and with a loud report. The path of rupture in this second case, though much the less regular, is the more interesting of the FIG. 1. Several weeks later, after the photograph for Fig. 1 was taken, a similar doubling of the volute crack occurred in this helmet, starting from the end of the eyelash crack near A and spreading thence to the left contra-clockwise for about ½ in. The negatives from which these pictures are made have not been touched up in any way, save writing the letters on them. The paper describes the lead refining process operated at Norddeutsche Affinerie (N.A.). Incoming materials are different grades of lead with varying percentages of impurities: Cu, Te, As, Sn, Sb, Bi, precious metals. The facilities are designed for charge-wise operation. After drossing, generally Te, As, Sn and Sb are removed substantially by the Harris Refining Process using fused NaOH. A certain selectivity during refining is achieved by controlled addition of NaNO3. Another refining step is decopperizing by means of elemental sulfur. Complete separation of Te, As, Sn and Sb is accomplished by chemical methods in a leaching plant. A Howard Press is used in the Parkes Process for desilverizing. After vacuum dezinking in kettle, Bi is removed, if required, by means of Ca and Mg. In an end refining step Ca, Mg and Zn are removed by having the lead melt treated with NaOH and NaN03. The refined lead as such, or in the form of special alloys, is cast by an ingot casting machine into 50-kg ingots. Zinc which is used as a precipitant in the Parkes Process is recovered by distillation from the high grade Ag-Zn-Pb crystals in Faber du Faur retorts while the Pb/Ag alloy is fed to the cupellation furnace. Ca and Mg are removed from the Ca-Mg-Bi crystals formed in the course of Bi removal, and the Bi-bearing lead is cast into anodes. The electrolytic lead refining facilities at N.A. are operated largely for the purpose of separating Pb and Bi. These facilities are also used particularly for the refining of Bi-bearing lead which had gone through the above process, but from which Bi has not been removed by Ca and Mg.

The manufacture of coke in Peru, as practiced at the coalmines of the Quishuarcancha and Goyllarisquisca districts, is intermediate between the primitive coke-heap and the bee-hive oven. The method of coking is quite simple. In constructing the coal-heap, preparatory to burning, the ground is first leveled, and a simple stack of stone and clay is built, giving the bottom, to a height of 6 ft., approximately 6 ft. of external diameter. The size of the stack varies in different districts, but is generally 9 ft. high, and slightly smaller at the top than at the bottom. The walls of the heap are from 12 to 14 in. thick, which allows an inside diameter of from 3.75 to 4 ft. These walls are pierced at intervals by three or more tiers of openings or flues, connected with the central flue. The radial flues have a diameter of about 5 in. and are built with a gentle upward slope. The stack (shown in Fig. 1) is permanent; and in this respect the practice in Peru differs from other primitive practices in which nothing is permanent except the yard. Above the permanent 6-ft. portion of the stack there is added a cap of clay, about 3 ft. high, which contracts toward the top, where it has an inside diameter of about 2 ft. This clay cap is temporary, and frequently has to be renewed after each burning. Before charging the coal, there are first built, from the lowest tier of flues upon the ground, a number of temporary flues, leading from the central stack out to the edge of the coal-heap, and constructed of blocks of coal for the greater part of the distauce, the outer edge alone being of rough stoue. A detailed study of texture developmenf in poly crystalline copper atzd 70-30 brass has been completed. Textural changes as a function of deformation are shoum by pole jigmres and by intensity measurements oF- various rejlectiotzs from the rolling plane and the rolling direction. These examinations were accompanied by measurements of stacking fault frequency, hardness changes, and microstructure. Some of the results were briefly presented earlier. Additional results reported here are consistent with the idea that deformation faulting or slip by partial dislocations is of primary importance in the formation of deformation textures in fcc metals. lo examine the idea that deformation faulting is of primary importance in determining whether the texture is the copper type or the brass type an extensive study of the development of polycrystalline textures in copper and 70-30 brass was initiated. Besides the determination of complete pole figures, the intensities of the various reflections from both the rolling plane and the plane perpendicular to the rolling direction, the peak shifts due to deformation stacking faults, and the hardness of the rolled specimens were examined at various reductions from 10 to 99 or 99.5 pct. Mi-crostructures were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some of the results were briefly presented in an earlier publication.' Since then, additional information has been obtained. This is given in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material and Specimen Preparation. The material used was a commercial electrolytic copper bar 1i in. wide and 2 in. thick and a 70-30 brass bar la in. wide and 1i in. thick. Chemical analysis indicated a purity of 99.97 pct for the copper, with 0.025 pct 0 as the major impurity. The 70-30 brass was of higher purity with 0.0016 pct 0 as the major impurity. Extreme care was taken in the preparation of the starting material to insure uniformly fine grains with a nearly random initial texture. The two bars were first cold-forged and then annealed to eliminate any original texture. The grains were then refined by several cold rolling (approx 30 pct reduction) and annealing treatments. The + -hr anneals were carried out in a salt bath at 390" to 440°C for copper and at 490°C for brass. The resulting penultimate grain size was 0.06 mm for copper and 0.03 mm for brass, and both showed very little preferred orientation. The number of prior cold rolling and annealing cycles was such that the final thickness after various final reductions of 10 to 95 (for brass) or 99 (for copper) pct was the same (0.020 in.). These annealed strips were rolled in two directions by reversing end for end between passes according to the following schedule: 0.006 in. per pass to 0.100 in., 0.003 in. per pass to 0.050 in., 0.002 in. per pass to 0.025 in., 0.001 in. per pass to 0.020 in. Texture Determination. The development of rolling textures was studied by examining complete pole figures determined from the (111) reflection. Specimens thinned from one face of the strip to half thickness (0.010 in.) were used to obtain the central portion of the pole figures, while specimens thinned from both faces to 0.003 in. were used to obtain the peripheral portion. The reflection and transmission techniques have been described previously. In addition to X-rav pole figures, texture development was also studied b; examining the intensity variation of the (Ill), (200), (2201, (311), (331), (420), and (442) reflections from the rolling plane and from the plane normal to the rolling direction, as a function of deformation. The same specimens used for the central portion of the pole figures were used for the intensity measurements of the various reflections from the rolling plane. For intensity measurements from the plane normal to the rolling direction, composite specimens were prepared by mounting sections cut parallel to the transverse direction of the strip. An epoxy resin was used to bond these sections together, and the entire composite was then mounted in a cold-setting resin to facilitate subsequent polishing and etching to remove distorted metal at the cut. The intensities were expressed in units of the integrated intensities measured from an annealed copper specimen having almost no preferred orientation. Stacking Fault Frequency Determination. Following the analysis of Warren: the stacking fault frequency, a, was determined from the change in the peak separation (A%) of two neighboring reflections of a deformed specimen, as compared with the normal peak separations of a fully annealed specimen. To obtain sufficient intensities for the second-order reflections, (222) and (400), composite specimens were prepared from parallel sections cut from the strip at 30 deg to the rolling direction for copper and 25 deg for the brass.* From texture data, these sections are known to contain a large population of both (111) and (200) planes. Since residual stresses can also cause X-ray line shifts (the direction of line shifts depends upon the sign of the stress), the use of composite specimens consisting of sectioned planes should help compensate for these effects as the residual stresses change sign from the surface to the central section of a rolled strip. For perhaps one hundred years scientists have been engaged in attempts at devising a satisfactory method of classification of coal. During this time many charts, tables and graphs have been proposed, some of which have had considerable merit, but no one system has been found to be applicable to all ranks of coal, nor has any one system received general acceptance. In many of the proposals, water eliminated between room temperature and 105" C. has been regarded as extraneous matter and calculations have been made to the air-dry or water-free basis. Such methods of calculation do not lend themselves to satisfactory grouping of the high-moisture coals.1, 2 A consideration not only of the properties of the high-moisture coals and their behavior on drying but of the generally accepted ideas of the coalification process and the role of water in this process indicates that water is an essential constituent of all coals and therefore should not be neglected. For example, in such low-rank coals as the lignites of the Northern Great Plains' deposits the inherent moisture of the lignite as mined plays a very important part in the physical properties thereof. Freshly mined lignite contains upwards of 30 per cent water and is extremely tough and resistant to shock. Upon exposure to the atmosphere, the lump loses part of its moisture and checks and splits, leaving a friable and broken up residue. So far as we have been able to determine, water is the only thing lost in this process and we are forced to the conclusion that moisture plays an extremely important part in the structural properties of the original lignite. With reference to the coalification process, Mack and Hulett3 pointed out in 1917 the important part that water played therein. They observed that water cannot be removed from peat or coal by pressure alone, but only as the result of chemical reaction, and suggested that peat in its early stages may be largely a hydrosol. Slow chemical changes occur over a long period of time until finally the mass becomes more largely a hydrogel. These views are substantiated to some extent by the experi-

Slovenliness is as reprehensible in words as in clothes. Much writing that we recognize as poor in style is merely sloppy. Just as some students postpone the necessary shave or forget to change their collars, so young engineers in writing drop their articles, definite and indefinite, or omit prepositions where they are required, possibly to compensate for those they use unnecessarily The work will begin [on] Saturday. Influenza seriously affected many mines [during] the last three months. Flotation in America [during] the last two years has made tremendous strides. Construction of the mill started [on] August 12, 1915, at which time 75% of the excavation was completed. The idea I wish to convey is [that] there are mineral deposits to which the present law applies badly. For this reason, if there was [for] no other, the ownership of the ore below and [of] the surface above should go together. When a unit of mapping is furnished, be the unit a claim or [a] group of claims, it is necessary . . . A fully stocked store was started in Park City and all employees [were] sold merchandise on a strictly cost basis. The word "merchandise" is left without government or agreement. 'I suggest: ". . . and merchandise was sold to all the employees on a strictly cash basis." The verb 'be' is serving concurrently both as a principal and as an auxiliary in the following: At first the work was interesting and [was] liked by most of the men. The sulphide ore was more complex or [was] milled at an increased cost. The failure to repeat the auxiliary verb in successive clauses is a common error, as in The filter is filled with liquid allowed to empty, and then ignited.

J. DANA SPERR, Jerome, Ariz. (communication to the Secretary*).¬Very little accurate information has been published about this district. Most of the geological data appearing in the technical press are based on "careful observations" made from an auto stage and a casual glance through the U. S. Geological Survey Bulletins, No. 340 of 1908 or No. 397 of 1909, both by F. C. Schrader. Mr. Schrader's report is still the best publication on the district. A really careful study of this report will uncover only a very few statements which have since proven questionable. This is a remarkable record when it is considered that only a short time was spent by Mr. Schrader in the field and that there was very little development work done at that time. The mining world and especially Mohave County, Ariz., will feel a sense of gratitude to Mr. Schrader for revising his early report. on this

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical prospecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field. Phase Measurements In the most widely used of the electrical prospecting methods, those using alternating current, the time of arrival of the "electrical vibration" at the different observation points can be carried out as phase measurements. The phase angle measured then expresses, in part of one "vibration," or one cycle, how much the electrical vibrations at the observation point are out of step with those close to the source of the field. A phase lag of 45", for instance, means that the alternating field in the observation point is one-eighth of one complete " vibration," or cycle, out of step behind the field at the source. If the frequency is, say, 500 cycles per second, a frequency often used in electrical prospecting, a phase lag of 45' then means that the time required for the field of force to travel from the source to the observation point is 1/8 ' /500 = 1/4000 sec. Since the phase angle can be measured with an accuracy of a fraction, say one-tenth, of a degree, and the frequency can be considerably higher than 500, it is readily seen that the time of arrival can in this way be measured

Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese; but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels. as' well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that high-grade manganese ore will be more and. more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits.

A commercial deposit of white kaolinite clay contained in the sandy overburden of the Cambrian Gatesburg formation in Central Pennsylvania was successfully mapped by combined SP and resistivity methods and results were checked by drilling. Resistivity minima in the range between roughly 2000 and 3500 ohm-meters coupled with second-order SP maxima of 50-60 mV contrast were found to characterize commercial white kaolinite clay beneath not more than 30-40 ft. of sandy overburden in the area stdied. This investigation supports the hypothesis, established previously, that certain SP phenomena may reasonably be ascribed to diffusion and membrane potentials produced by interaction of clay lenses, sandy matrix, and ground waters. The success of this test proves that this prospecting technique can assist in locating clay deposits in sandy overburden derived from the weathering of sandstones and carbonate rocks such as the Cambrian formations of Central Pennsylvania. In a recent paper, Gross and Moore (1959) described broad self-potential minima above the outcrops of the Cambrian Gatesburg formation. These "first-order" SP anomalies, of 220-350 mV contrast (Figure 7), are related to the peculiar sandy residual soil covering the Gatesburg formation. Small positive ("second-order") peaks of 50-60 mV contrast are superposed on the bottom or flanks of the first-order troughs. They appear to be related to lenses and layers of kaolinite clays within the sandy Gatesburg overburden. Both first-order and second-order anomalies show a characteristic inverse relationship with apparent resistivity profiles in most cases. An explanation in terns of liquid-junction and shale potentials was advanced. According to this working hypothesis, shale potentials are generated: 1) at the contact of the sandy Gatesburg overburden with the more argillaceous soils of surrounding formations; 2) at the boundary of clay lenses contained in the sandy matrix of that overburden. Concentration gradients between interstitial infiltration waters and perched water tables within the Gatesburg overburden are believed to give rise to the liquid-junction potentials. In order to test this hypothesis further, a detailed study was carried out of a second-order positive anomaly on the property of the Woodbury Clay Co. at Mines (Blair County, Pa., Hollidaysburg folio of the U.S. Geological Survey). A second aim was to establish if combined SP and resistivity surveys are suitable as a practical method for delimiting favorable areas in which commercial kaolinite clay de~osits may be found by drilling. Drilling control was provided by the Woodbury Clay Co. PROCEDURES Instrumentation used for SP measurements was the same as described in the paper mentioned. For resistivity surveys, a direct-current voltmeter-ammeter device built by Georator Gorp. of Manassas (Va.) was used in combination with non-polarizing electrodes from the same manufacturer. Power was supplied by one to six 45-volt, heavy-duty B-batteries

Pure iron was inductively melted in small refractory crucibles and optical pyrometer and immersion thermocouple readings were simultmzeously taken. The resulting emissivities of the liquid iron surface obtained were found to be greatly affected by both the gaseous atmosphere and geometrical changes in the physical setup. Quantitative values for these effects are indicated. FOR many applications in both the laboratory and plant, optical pyrometry is still the best means of measuring temperatures in the incandescent range. A prerequisite in evaluating the correct temperature is a good value of the emissivity of the surface. To obtain the emissivity from the tabulated values of the literature can be very confusing and often far from correct. There are many reasons for these difficulties, and it is not within the scope of this paper either to enumerate or to discuss them all. Its purpose is to show quantitatively how several factors affect the apparent emissivities obtained from experimental measurements on liquid iron surfaces. The black body is the reference state for the quantitative values of emissivities and is defined1 as a body which absorbs all radiation incident on it, reflecting none; such a surface emits more radiation per unit area per unit time than any surface which reflects any radiation, and is given a value of unit emissivity. All bodies having reflective power thus have emissivities less than unity and are considered nonblack or grey bodies. The ratio of the radiant energy emitted by the flat, nonblack surface to that of a perfectly black surface of equal area and temperature is the emissivity of the surface. The above definitions are applied to flat, polished, opaque surfaces, very seldom encountered in actual measurements, and for this reason many authors have suggested that the word "emittance" be used for real bodies rather than emissivity. The emittance has reference to the material and its configuration rather than to its properties in the idealized state. Recent observations of molten iron in a small refractory crucible indicate that not only the configuration of its surface but the geometrical arrangement of its surrounding and the nature of the surrounding atmosphere have a pronounced effect on the emittance. Neglect of changes in such conditions may lead to errors as large as 40°C at 1600°C. Thus it is suggested that the term "apparent emissivity" be used and that it be recognized that its value pertains to a particular experimental arrangement only. As a result of not recognizing these differences in emissivities, which are obtainable from changes in the physical setup of an observation, many investigators have incorrectly quoted their values as those of the emissivities of particular materials rather than as an apparent emissivity for their particular arrangements. As a consequence, values of the emissivity of liquid iron ranging from 0.3 up to 0.55 are found in the literature. Experiments were performed to determine the effects of mechanical vibrations on ordering in CuAu. The effects of 5, 10, and 15 kc vibrations were investigated over a range of ordering temperatures of 280° to 360°C. A decrease in the rate of ordering was observed at all frequencies and ordering temperatures. THE effects of mechanical vibrations on certain solid-state reactions have been noted by several investigators. In 1930, Mahoux' reported a substantial increase in the case depth of a steel sample nitrided under the influence of mechanical vibrations over that of an unvibrated sample. Similarly, an accelerating effect of vibrations on the diffusion of chromium in steel was noted. Guillet, in the same year, confirmed the results of Mahoux. More recently Schenck and schmidtmann3 studied the effects of low-frequency, alternating loads on the diffusion of carbon in steel. The results of their experiments, conducted at 500 cycles per min and large strain, (0.2 pct), indicated an acceleration of the process. These workers also reported an increase in case depth of a sample vibrated at 430 kc during a carburizing treatment. Effects of high-frequency vibrations on solid-state reactions have also been investigated by Gudzoff and Gavze6 and Fairbanks and Dewez.7 The former reported an acceleration of the age-hardening process in aluminum alloys. The latter noted changes in the structure and mechanical properties of steel annealed under the influence of vibrations. On the other hand, Altenburg4 and Ehringer5 have given some theoretical reasons and experimental evidence as to the improbability of any effect of vibrations on diffusion. Comprehensive surveys of the effects of vibrations on metallurgical reactions are given by Hiedemann' and Bergmann.9 None of the above investigations led to a physical description of the effects of mechanical vibrations on solid-state reactions. In the present study an attempt was made to gain an understanding of the influence of vibrations on nucleation and diffusion. The order-disorder transformation was chosen for investigation since its mechanism has been extensively discussed in the literature. Moreover, the progress of the transformation may be easily followed by observation of electrical resistance changes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The specimens used for the experimental observation of ordering rates were prepared from 50 at. pct Cu-Au alloy wire.* Each specimen consisted of a 0.02-in. diam wire approximately 10 in. long to which two copper potential leads were silver soldered, 2 1/2 in. apart, near one end of the wire. The theory of electrophoresis is briefly outlined and an apparatus which may be used for electrophoretic studies is explained. The results obtained using this apparatus are in agreement with those obtained by other investigators. How to solve some of the complications which occur in the measurement of zero charge and zeta potential is explained. It is believed that the apparatus described in this paper will allow rapid measurements of zeta potential, zero point of charge, electrophoretic mobility and zeta coefficient. For many years the phenomenon of electrophoresis has been studied, and much work has been done in designing an apparatus for better measurements of mobility, zeta potential and zero charge of minerals. Up to the present, most electrophoresis experiments have involved cumbersome equipment and tedious microscopic observation. The modified cell proposed in this paper obviates these drawbacks by using a Rayoscope together with a special system of lenses and filters. It therefore allows a faster and more accurate measurement of zero charge and particle velocity. THEORY Most authors currently regard zeta potential as the potential difference in an otherwise uniform medium between a point some large distance from the surface of the mineral and a point on the plane of shear. Fuerstenau,1 Miaw,2 and Gaudin and sun3 have performed some calculations of zeta potential using Henry's equation.4 Their results show wide discrepancies, probably due to differences in the past histories of the minerals used. The authors have also noticed this difference on determining the zero point of charge of quartz as shown on Table I.
