A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology. A brief review of part of their theory can be stated as follows. Let A' be an isolated particle, and let us consider a group of two scanning points h is the vector joinlng these points, h its modulus, and a its direction. Let us also define a boolean function, k(x), whose value is 1 if x lies inside the particle and 0 if it 1s outside. The total number of events in which both points are inside A' IS the covariance Ii',(h): is the measure of the intersection of A' with the particle ALh obtained by translating A' of -h Obviously K,(O) is the volume of the particle A', or its area if A' is a two-dimensional body. Sublevel stoping has been used in Finland since the 1930's and today more than ten under- ground mines have adopted it as their main stoping method (Fig. I). Approximately 80% of the total underground tonnage is mined by sub- level stoping (Table 1) The first mines to introduce the sublevel stoping method in Finland were limestone mines. The development of sublevel stoping was very slow up to the mid 1960's when the switch to trackless mining started and the increase of mechanization lead to higher capacity and productivity. The method itself has been almost the same since the 1950's when long hole drilling was introduced. According to a future prognosis sublevel caving will give way to sub- level stoping; on the other hand, open pit mining will at the same time grow rapidly with some new mineral orebodies, which will he brought into production. Most Finnish orebodies are, however, only marginal ores and they could not support mining with more expensive methods than open pit mining or sublevel stoping. The future of sublevel stoping seems relatively bright. GEOLOGICAL AND ROCK MECHANICAL BACKGROUND The rock mechanical conditions in Finland are in general relatively good and the rocks firm. The compressive strength is normally 40 - 150 Mpa and modulus of elasticity 40 - 200 Gpa. Low values are common in altered and fractured rocks and near the ore contact Rock stress measurements have been carried out already for 20 years for mine design and monitoring purposes. The results of these measurements show that relatively high horizontal stresses seem to be common (Fig. 2).

THE mechanism of the martensitic transformation has been the subject of a remarkable number of papers in recent years.' Because the task of evaluating all the available theories is a formidable one, the authors will confine themselves merely to the presentation of results of an experimental investigation of the habit orientation, lattice relations, magnitude and direction of average transformation shear strain, and orientation of subband markings for a single variant of the possible habit systems in an 11 pct Mo-Ti alloy. It is hoped that these data will assist in the establishment of a rigorous theory for the mechanism of the martensitic transformation. Experimental Procedure Specimen Preparation: A sample, approximately 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/4 in., was cut from a double arc-melted ingot composed of commercial-process A titanium and high purity molybdenum (nominally, 11 pct Mo). It was capsuled in evacuated Vycor at 10.-3 mm Hg subsequent to a double argon wash and homogenized for 48 hr at 1100°C. After a direct quench into H2O at room temperature, a large-grained specimen resulted, which, by X-ray diffraction and metallographic means, was subsequently shown to be in the body-centered-cubic phase, ß. Two adjacent, approximately perpendicular faces were polished and the ends of the specimen were ground parallel in a V-block. Fiducial lines were inscribed at 45" to the common edge of the polished surfaces in order that they would be perpendicular to the habit traces of the subsequently formed a plates.2 The specimen was then compressed between the ground ends in a Buehler press to stress induce the transformation ß to a'. Experimental Measurements: The habit-plane orientation, the orientation of subband markings, the orientation relation between the parent ß and the product a', and the transformation strain for the same plate were determined. To further establish the nature of the subbands, one surface was repol-ished and etched. The bands in the a' were still visible and were found to be optically anisotropic under polarized light. Back-reflection Laue patterns were obtained from the ß matrix and from a region comprising both a' plates and adjacent ß matrix (a Cu target was used). By superposition of the two X-ray diffraction patterns, it was possible to obtain a tentative orientation relationship between the two phases. This result was confirmed by a pattern taken after the specimen was rotated to make the basal-plane pole of the hexagonal a' phase strike the film. This necessitated cutting the specimen to expose the a' plate in the new position relative to the X-ray beam. Approximately 90% of all potash produced is employed as a fertilizer, either directly or with nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining 10% is utilized in the manufacture of other chemical products. The original source of potassium was wood ash, however, today the term potash refers to all commercially important salts of potassium. The world's first potash mining operation commenced in Strassfurt, Germany, circa 1860, and since that time the industry has grown steadily to its present annual output of about 30 million tons of potassium chloride products or 18 million tons of Kg0 equivalent, potassium chloride or "muriate of potash" being equivalent to 63.1 % pure KPO.

"THERE is nothing new under the sun." All over the world, mineral-dressing engineers are working at their problems, no two of which are alike. Each encounters equipment and process problems. Many devise simple ways and means of overcoming their difficulties. Many of these problems are quite common in the industry, yet, since no one human being seems capable of thinking of everything, these problems at some plants often are looked upon as necessary evils. The purpose of this symposium is to gather together, from competent engineers, devices and practices that have been useful to them. Most of the ideas contributed are not new, yet there is no plant operator, old timer or youngster, who will not find some idea herein that will give him a suggestion for improving his operation. Space does not permit a complete elaboration on all of the contributions offered. Each item is summarized, but this will be ample for those skilled in the art of mineral dressing. A list of contributors appears at the end of the paper, and the superior number at the end of each item identifies its source. GENERAL EQUIPMENT A signal light to show that a steel bin, containing relatively fine, moist ore, is full, can be made by suspending a copper rod in the bin to a sufficient depth to ensure ample contact with the ore. One wire of a 32-volt circuit should be attached to the rod and one to the side of the bin. Sufficient current will flow to make the signal light burn. A 110-volt circuit could be used, but 32 volts ensures safety.10 Fig I shows a circular bin for crushed ore. It is a concrete structure footed on the ground, using no supporting columns. Tailing from the sink-float was used for aggregate. Cross conveyors for discharging ore are not required, nor is a tripper for filling. Segregation is minimized by drawing from different gates. An exhaust fan on top of the bin eliminates condensation due to temperature of the ore.21 A beam with an adjustable point of suspension near the center permits rigging rolls for removal in a very few minutes. This makes unnecessary the lacing of the cable through the hub bolts on one side, around the shaft on the other, and the trouble of balancing the load.8 The ratchet handle on a Symons crusher may be replaced by a drum with a cable wound on it. When the cable is pulled by a crane or hoist it causes the drum to revolve and thus screws or unscrews the bowl. INTRODUCTION The stabilization of slopes is not a design problem. A slope is designed before it is made. For a slope to be stabilized it must already exist. The basic problem has existed for a long time. It started with cuts in soil and rock made in the 18th century during the construction of the canals which were developed at that time, and continued into the 19th century with the development of the railways, and in the 20th century with motor roads and lately open pit mining. It is not difficult to stabilize a slope, but certain questions must be asked and answered. These are: i) How much stability is required? ii) For how long is it required? iii) How important is the cost? These three questions indicate the basic problem of Civil Engineering, which is that the solution to any problem is a compromise between safety, cost and time. Stabilization of slopes is no exception. If the slope exists why is stabilization a problem? There are many possible reasons, for instance, a neighbouring and similar slope may have failed, or it may be necessary to change the conditions of the slope, steepen it, increase its height, put weight at the top, or construct a building at the foot in which case added security is required, or guarantee its stability for a longer time. MECHANISM OF FAILURE In order to pick the correct method of stabilization the mechanism of failure must be understood and the immediate cause of failure known. Often to remove the cause is the best remedy. The mechanism of failure has been studied over a period of many years in landslide problems. Pit slope failures are very similar to some types of landslides. (1) (2) (3) (4) In one sense there are many causes of landslides. Terzaghi lists 19. This means that there cannot be a standard solution to a stabilization problem. In another sense, it can be said that there is only one cause, which is gravity. CERTAIN alloys of iron and nickel, when rolled and annealed, possess a preferred crystal orientation: (001) in the rolling plane and [loo] in the rolling direction, when recrystallized at 850" to 1050°C after approximately 98 pct cold reduction. Since the preferred orientation makes a direction of easiest magnetization coincide with the rolling direction, these alloys, especially a 50 pct iron in nickel alloy, have found wide application in the electrical industry' for choke coils and special types of transformers. The rate of the recrystallization reaction was studied at temperatures ranging from 500° to 600°C. The heat of activation for the reaction was calculated from the observed rates, and crystal orientation determinations were made before and after re-crystallization. A vacuum melted iron-nickel alloy* analyzing 49.6 pct nickel, 0.018 pct carbon, and 0.30 pct manganese was used for the experiments. The alloy was cold-rolled 98 pct into strips 1/2 in. wide by 0.002 in. thick. Specimens 1 in. long were sealed under a vacuum (approximately 10-8 mm Hg) in 1/2 in. ID pyrex glass tubes. For heat treatment these tubes were fastened to Nicrohm wires and submerged in a molten salt bath controlled to ±2°C. (The maximum measurement error was within 3°C.) The time at temperature was varied logarithmically from one sample to another, and runs were made at 500°, 525", 550" and 575°C. A molten lead bath was used for a run at 600°C which was controlled to the same accuracy. To determine the extent of recrystallization after a particular time at a given temperature, a method was used suggested by the work of Decker, Asp, and Harker.3,4 This method employs an X-ray spectrometer whereby X rays are diffracted from crystallites whose diffracting atom planes are parallel to the rolling plane of the specimen. The intensities of the diffracted rays are measured by a Geiger counter. The counter can be rotated through a range of angle, and can be motor driven through this range at a speed of 2" per min. The measured intensities are plotted vs. angle by a potentiometer recorder. In a 50 pct iron-nickel alloy it was found that only (200) reflections were obtained from the rolling plane with recrystallized material, and that only (220) reflections were obtained from the rolling plane with unrecrystallized material. No other reflections were obtained under these conditions over a range of Bragg angle of 0 to 45" using either type of specimen. As a consequence, the intensity of the (200) reflections from the rolling plane was taken to indicate the amount of recrystallized ma-terial present in a specimen, and the corresponding intensity of the (220) reflections was taken to indicate the amount of unrecrystallized material present. To insure flatness and proper alignment of the reflecting specimen in the spectrometer, the sample was laid in a slot 1/2 in. wide x 0.001 in. deep which was machined in a 3/4x2x1/2 in. steel carrier. The specimen then was taped down with cellophane tape. This steel cradle was mounted vertically in the specimen holder of the spectrometer so that the bottom edge of the carrier rested against a horizontal shoulder. Intensity data used in plotting the percent of recrystallized material vs. time at temperature were obtained by directly counting the diffracted beam of nickel filtered copper Ka radiation used throughout the work. The X-ray spectrometer was employed also in obtaining pole figure data to be used for orientation determinations. At the beginning of this investigation a transmission pole figure holder was used." As a thickness of 0.002 in. of this alloy was found to be opaque to the copper Ka radiation, it was necessary to reduce the thickness of the pole figure specimen. INTRODUCTION THE flotation process for the concentration of ores is a method by means of which one or more of the minerals in the ore (usually the valuable ones) are picked up by means of a liquid film and floated at the surface of .a mass of fluid pulp. Here they are separated from the other minerals, which remain immersed in the body of the pulp. In general, the minerals which are floated are sulphides of metallic luster, but some other minerals of metallic luster such as graphite and some sulphides with adamantine luster, such as sphalerite and cinnabar, are amenable to treatment by the process. The importance of flotation lie's in the fact that it is primarily a "slimes process" by means of which the particles of valuable mineral, too fine for efficient gravity concentration, are saved with a high percentage of recovery. Recoveries in the mills treating low-grade copper sulphide ores have been advanced 10 to 20 per cent. by the installation of the process and similar increased savings have been accomplished by the same means in mills treating sulphide ores of zinc and lead. When finely ground ore containing sulphides mixed with a siliceous or earthy gangue is brought gently onto the surface of a body of water, in a direction forming an acute angle with the surface of the water, a considerable portion of the sulphide constituent of the ore floats on the surface of the liquid, while the gangue sinks. This is the so-called film flotation, exemplified by the Wood and Macquisten processes. When gas bubbles are introduced into a fluid pulp composed of finely ground ore and water, to which has been added (1) a small amount of certain oils, or (2) a small amount of certain acids or acid salts, or (3) a small amount of certain alkalis or alkaline salts, or (4) a small amount of a mixture of oil with acid or alkali, the sulphide particles in the ore are brought to the surface on the gas bubbles. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work has been done concerning the onset of convection in liquids as a result of interm1 density gradients. This work, which has been doue in many different fields, is reviewed here and extended slightly to give a rrlore quantitative understanding to the probletrz of conzection in liquid metal dlffusion experinletzts. In liquid metal systems the capillary reservoir technique is currently used, almost exclusively, to measure diffusion coefficients. In this technique it is necessary that the liquid be stagnant in order to avoid mixing by means of convection currents. Convective mixing may result from: 1) convection produced as a result of the initial immersion of the capillary; 2) convection produced in the region of the capillary mouth as the result of the stirring frequency used to avoid solute buildup in the reservoir near the capillary mouth; 3) convection produced during solidification as a result of the volume change; and 4) convection produced as a result of local density differences within the liquid in the capillary. The first three types of convection have been discussed elsewhere1-a and are only mentioned for completeness here. This work is concerned only with the fourth type of convection. Local density differences will arise within the liquid as a result of either a temperature gradient or a concentration gradient. It is usually, but not always, recognized by those employing the capillary reservoir technique that the top of the capillary should be kept slightly hotter than the bottom and that the light element should be made to migrate downward in order to avoid convection. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of work, both theoretical and experimental, has been done in a number of different fields which bear on this problem. This work is reviewed here and extended slightly in an effort to give a more quantitative understanding of the convective motion produced in vertical capillaries by local density differences. The Stokes-Navier equations for an incompressible fluid of constant viscosity in a gravitational field may be written as: %L + (v?)v = - ?£ + Wv - g£ [1] where F is the velocity, t the time, P the pressure, p the density, v the kinematic viscosity, g the gravitational acceleration, and k a unit vector in the vertical direction. A successful diffusion experiment requires the liquid to be motionless, and under this condition Eq. [I] becomes: where a is the thermal expansion coefficient [a =-(l/po)(dp/d)], a' is a solute expansion coefficient [a' = -(l/po)(dp/d)], and the solute is taken as that component which makes a' a positive number. Combining with Eq. [3] the following restriction is obtained: Since there is no fixed relation between VT and VC in a binary diffusion experiment, Eq. [5] shows that the condition of fluid motionlessness requires both the temperature gradient and the concentration gradient to be vertically directed. Given this condition of a density gradient in the vertical direction only, it is obvious that, as this vertical density gradient increases from negative to positive values, the motionless liquid will eventually become unstable and convective movement will begin. The classical treatment of this type of instability problem was given by aleih' in 1916 for the case of a thin fluid film of infinite horizontal extent; and a very comprehensive text has recently been written on the subject by handrasekhar.' It is found that convective motion does not begin until a dimensionless number involving the density gradient exceeds a certain critical value. This dimensionless number is generally referred to as the Rayleigh number, R, and it is equal to the product of the Prandtl and Grashof numbers. For the sake of clarity a distinction will be made between two types of free convection produced by internal density gradients. In the first case a density gradient is present in the vertical direction only, and, since the convection begins only after a critical gradient is attained, this case will be called threshold convection. In the second case a horizontal density gradient is present and in this case a finite convection velocity is produced by a finite density gradient so that it will be termed thresholdless convection. Some experimentalists have performed diffusion experiments using capillaries which were placed in a horizontal or inclined position in order to avoid convection. These positions do put the small capillary dimension in the vertical direction and, consequently, they would be less prone to threshold convection than the vertical position. THE magneto-optic method of analysis had its origin in experiments1 which were designed to detect and measure a time lag in the Faraday effect and later to study this time lag as a function of the wave length of the light.2 Faraday discovered in 1845 that a beam of plane polarized light, when passed through a transparent, isotropic medium traversed by a magnetic field of force parallel to the direction of the light, suffers a rotation. The direction of rotation is reversed with the reversal of the magnetic field and its magnitude depends upon the strength of the field, the length of the path of light in the substance and the nature of the substance. This phenomenon of magnetic rotation is known as the Faraday effect. A question which had been of some interest for years was whether this power of a liquid to rotate polarized light is acquired instantly with the application of the magnetic field, that is, whether it is a case of instantaneity or whether there is a very small interval of time which intervenes between the application of the magnetic field and the consequent rotation of the light by the liquid; in other words, whether there is a time lag in the Faraday effect. Efforts to measure such a lag previously had met with failure. It was recognized at the outset' that since a time lag had escaped detection it must be extremely small, if to a measurable extent it exists at all. It became necessary therefore to adopt a timing device capable of making measures of almost infinitesimally small intervals. The velocity of light served as this timing device, a modification of a method originally employed by Abraham and Lemoine3 being adapted to the requirements of the problem. Since light travels about 30 cm. in a billionth of a second and since settings in our observations may be repeated with deviations not exceeding 3 mm.,

In the course of studies made on the Ti-Cu alloy system,' particles identified visually as TiH were encountered unexpectedly in a specimen of high-purity Ti-0.8Cu alloy. The particles did not appear immediately after preparation, but following-storage in a dessicator for several days. Since the alloy had been vacuum annealed to a low hydrogen concentration (19 ppm by vacuum-fusion analysis), the appearance of the TiH particles was suspected as a surface contamination effect. A specimen of a Ti-0.8Cu alloy had been annealed 2 hr at 790°C and water quenched, to produce the single-phase equiaxed a structure. The metallo-graphic sample was ground through 600X paper, rough-polished on a high-speed wheel with a mixture of alumina and chromic acid, awLhish-polished on a slow-speed wheel. Disturbed metal layers were removed from the final surface by alternately etching with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution and polishing on the slow-speed wheel with fine alumina. The final surface was swab-etched with a 1 1/2 HF-3 1/2 HNO3-95 H2O solution, rinsed in tap water, and dried in a stream of filtered air. The micro-structure, shown in Fig. 1, was composed of equiaxed a grains without any trace of second phase. After storage in a dessicator for 3 days, the appearance of small particles in the structure became evident (see Fig. 2). After 7 days of storage, the particles were more distinct, and in some grains, began to appear as elongated particles. The specimen then was etched a second time (without repolishing) to produce the structure shown in Fig. 4. On the basis of micro- structural observation, the line markings were identified as TiH; attempts to obtain diffraction patterns from the surface for positive identification were not successful. That the structure is a surface effect was demonstrated by grinding with 240X paper to remove the surface layer. The surface then was ground, polished, and etched using the procedures described previously. The same observations were made: the freshly prepared surface was devoid of any second phase, whereas the particles again appeared after several days storage. The same effect has been observed in other a-stabilized titanium alloys, including a high-purity Ti-0.20 alloy containing only 16 ppm H by analysis. The effect has not yet been observed in unalloyed titanium, nor does its appearance appear to be consistent with any particular alloy system. From these observations, it is concluded that certain a-titanium alloys are susceptible to the formation of titanium hydride at the surface of metallo-graphic specimens. Although the Western bentonite industry has grown rapidly, it is facing major challenges to sustained growth. The fundamental penalty of costly overland transportation to both domestic markets and to US seaports is of increasing importance; as both substitute materials and foreign bentonites present more formidable competition in the historic market areas of drilling muds, foundry sands, and iron ore pelletizing; and as foreign demand grows more rapidly than domestic demand. The Western bentonite industry is facing these challenges by altering its transportation patterns, by upgrading of products, and by emphasizing customer service and stringent quality control.

INTRODUCTION A small, independent mining enterprise (SIME) is an independently owned and operated business concern engaged primarily in mineral development, from the exploration to the production stage. A SIME may or may not be listed on stock exchanges. By definition, a SIME is not dominant in its field and has no long-term financial backing. As such, it is not a major producer of minerals, nor is it a petroleum company, a government organization or a subsidiary of such organizations. The survival and growth of a SIME is most often controlled by an independently minded entrepreneur, who not only conceives and carries out new projects, but is materially affected by the success or failure of these projects. Usually, a SIME does not have a large or constant cash flow. Such a lack of long-term financial backing forces the SIME to meet the challenge of finding capital for its activities on a step-by-step basis. Its survival strategy is thus based on finding funds at the right time, of the right type and in the right quantities. The purpose of this paper is to show that the type of venture in which a SIME is involved affects the difficulty of raising new capital and the choice of possible sources of funds. The Small, Independent Mining Enterprise The SIME, also called small miner, junior mining company, speculative mining company, and pennystock mining company, is not a figment of the imagination of financial speculators. In Canada, there are more than 1,800 small mineral enterprises which spend on the average less than $1,000,000 per year on activity which is directed at bringing forth new mineral supply. In the United States, 64 percent of the non-fuel mining operations are conducted by nine or fewer men, and the coal industry is characterized by several thousand smaller independent producers, still predominantly family-owned or controlled. In Chile, 80 percent of the mines can be classified as small mines. In the Philipines, approximately 60 percent of metal mining operations are classified as small mines. The SIME is actively engaged in mining all over the world, and very much so in the Pacific Rim. The Mineral Supply Process The whole process of bringing forth new mineral supply involves a dynamic sequence of activities, ranging from the initial exploration for a mineral occurrence to the production of a marketable product. A typical sequence is outlined in Figure 1. At the grass-roots exploration stage, a series of geological, geophysical and geochemical tests is aimed at locating a mineral occurrence. Especially in the early phases of such activities, the uncertainty (risk) surrounding a venture is high, since only general geological information exists on which to base a judgement of the economic viability of the venture. Such risk is attractive to few investors.
