The method developed and used in this laboratory for the production of metallic uranium of such purity that it is ductile and can be cold-worked to fine wire or thin sheet by rolling has already been described1. It consists, briefly, in the electrolysis of potassium uranous fluoride (KUF5) in a molten bath composed of equal parts of sodium and calcium chlorides. The bath is contained in a graphite crucible, electrically heated to about 775° C., the crucible serving as the anode for electrolysis. The uranium deposits in finely divided form mixed with salts upon a molybdenum cathode suspended axially in the crucible. Upon completion of the electrolysis the cathode is removed and cooled, the deposit broken and leached to remove salts. The metal powder is washed with water and dilute acetic acid and dried in vacuo to reduce oxidation. Suitable amounts are then prcssed into pellets and heated in vacuo by high-frequency induction, using a thoria crucible. The uranium melts and flows away from the pellet, leaving a shell, which is largely oxide. In general, this method produced a satisfactory metal, although at times tile uranium was not ductile. The investigations recorded here were made to find the cause of this embrittlement. It was known that the metal generally contained carbon, derived from disintegration of the graphitc crucible in which electrolysis is conducted, in amounts dependent upon the thoroughness of washing the metal powder. Accordingly, analyses of several samples, both ductile and brittle, were made by combustion and absorption of CO² in Ascarite, using air instead of oxygen to reduce the temperaturc and rate of oxidation. Several of these metals were made with special precautions to reduce carbon content. The results show no relationship between ductility and carbon content in the range investigated (Table 1). Microscopic examination of ductile and brittle metals disclosed the presence in the latter of an intergranular constituent, harder than the matrix and less easily oxidizable, which was absent from the ductile material. AMONG others, one of the most important duties of the accounting department is to disclose to the management the cost of production accurately and as quickly as possible after the ore has been produced and treated. A report is issued daily showing man shifts and the cost of labor, supplies, power, and miscellaneous charges to each department of the operation: mining, crushing, milling, packing and loading, and general expense. Mining costs are broken down into stoping, handling, development, exploration, and miscellaneous, and each of these subdepartmental costs are further broken down into the branches making up the subdepartment. Costs of crushing, milling, packing and loading, and general expense are detailed in the same manner. With such a detailed daily report as this, the management is able to keep in close touch with the efficiency of the entire operation. Because no expense items are deferred or spread over a period, and so that the report does not lose its comparative valve, appearances of unusual charges are explained.

Eagle Mountain mine of Kaiser Steel Corp. began production in 1947 when the direct shipping ore contained 51-56% Fe. The high grade, wide ore face and low stripping ratio ores were rapidly depleted and Eagle Mountain required processing plants for upgrading and more efficient mining equipment. During 1970-71 total annual pit tonnage averaged 56 million tons of material ranking the Eagle Mountain Mine as the fourth largest in the country. Ore production averaged 12.5 million tons requiring a stripping ratio of 3.5: 1. During this period mining activities were scheduled for a three-shift, seven-day operation. The present mining rate is about 30 million tpy on a two-shift, five-day schedule.

Although tunneling machines have attained very high advance rates in medium-hard rocks, the need for frequent repairs has slowed their use in very hard rocks. Laser- assisted tunneling is expected to improve tunneling machine performance by improving either specific energy or amount and quality of muck. The beneficial effects of lasing are the initiation and growth of microcracks from differential thermal expansion of grains, and overall spalling in the vicinity of the lased area. Using a constant thrust rock cutting device with disk cutters, the effects of cutter geometry, cutter diameter, thrust, and speed variations on specific energy and muck were explored and the improvement in performance of disk cutters caused by lasing was evaluated. It was found that the improvement depends on beam power and density, beam speed, pattern of heating, and cutting pattern and procedure. A focused beam slightly offset from the cutter path gives the most improvement both when cutting on a smooth surface and when cutting in previously cut grooves.

The oil and gas lease is the basic contract of the oil and gas industry; it is the foundation stone upon which the producing industry, particularly, is based. As the industry is precarious and highly speculative, the foundation contract should be of the utmost integrity and certainty. But right there an anomaly exists; the oil and gas lease is the most obscure, most uncertain, doubtful contract in the realm of law today. That is a condition that must be considered when taking oil and gas leases, and when buying, selling, and holding them. It may fairly be asked why should this industry rest upon so insecure a foundation. Why should not the oil industry rest upon the contract that is the basis of all industry, the warranty deed? There are many contributing reasons, but the principal one is business expediency. The Anglo-Saxon idea of ownership of land is that every land owner owns from the center of the earth to the sky—all that is above and all that is below—consequently the oil and gas are owned by the person who owns the surface. That idea is not exactly true with reference to oil and gas, for many states have adopted the doctrine that oil and gas are like wild animals; they are fugacious and migratory and belong to the man that traps them. But, except for that doctrine, we believe that oil and gas are owned by the owner of the surface, wherein we differ from the Latin-American countries where the mineral rights are owned by the government. The United States was settled largely by homesteading. The owners of land were, in the main, farmers, who did not have the means or the faith to drill for oil or gas. The operators or speculators did not want to buy the land on the mere possibility of finding oil; hence a compromise resulted by which the land owner gave the speculator or the operator what he called an oil and gas lease, or a right to go upon his land and drill for oil and gas. What is supposed to be the first oil lease placed on record reads as follows: Agreed this 4th day of July, a.d. 1853, with J. D. In solution-mining of underground salt and similar minerals, using drilled wells for access, it is desirable to monitor the lateral growth pattern of the resulting fluid-filled cavern. Therefore, a process of seismic surveying from the surface of the ground has been conceived in which the amplitudes of waves reflected from and transmitted through the soluble formation are measured. The large acoustic impedance contrast between solid and fluid should produce striking amplitude anomalies, especially if shear waves are employed, since thick fluid bodies are opaque to shear waves. Horizontally-polarized (SH) shear waves are best for preventing conversion to P waves at the numerous horizontal interfaces in the ground. Field tests to date have shown that a truck-mounted, half-ton hammer striking horizontally against the end of a trench produces usable SH-wave energy at lateral distances up to about 850 ft. Horizontally-directed explosive wave sources were effective to about 2000 ft. Conventional magnetic-tape recording and processing were used, but with the detecting geophones oriented to favor SH waves. An irregular solution cavity in bedded salt at 500-ft depth has apparently been located by SH-wave and SV-wave reflections. Further field work is planned to corroborate and extend this result. The Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, is supporting this work. Major deposits of salt in tabular beds lie beneath some 300,000 sq miles of land in the central and northeastern U.S. This salt is a basic source of soda ash and chlorine, and has been extracted as brine from drilled wells for about a century. During the past two decades, the U.S. solution-mining industry, following the lead of European operators, has greatly improved the extraction process through the application of engineering and science.' In 1957, the Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, was formed. This group proceeded to attack certain common problems through the support of research. An outstanding problem has been that of determining the shape and location of the growing solution cavities in the underground salt, so that measures can be taken to maintain operating efficiency. The problem has been partially solved by the Dowel1 sonar mapping service, which employs a pulse-echo device lowered into the cavity through the well.2 However, the working range of this equipment is at present insufficient for large cavities, and echoes are not returned from highly sloping walls nor from behind such obstructions as rock debris. Therefore, an independent means of mapping the cavity, for example, from the surface without interfering with operation of the well, would be desirable. THEORY OF THE METHOD Seismic waves are the only physical agent known to be capable of sufficient resolution and penetration to define typical solution cavities from the surface of the ground. The geometry is unfavorable: cavity widths are generally less than half their depths below the surface; resolution and lateral location of boundaries and channels to within 50 ft at depths of 500 to 3000 ft is desirable. Conventional seismic surveying, as used for petroleum prospecting, is probably not the answer: isopach mapping, for example, is not thought accurate enough to define the cavity by the slight additional delay time it would introduce (of the order of 0.005 sec for a 50 ft-thick cavity in hard Paleozoic rocks). Refraction surveying has also been considered, but seismic specialists see little promise in it for this problem. In 1957, in correspondence with industry personnel, the writer suggested a seismic method based upon careful measurement of reflection amplitudes. As Table I illustrates, seismic reflection coefficients r for typical brine-rock interfaces are considerably higher than those for typical interfaces between different kinds of solid rock. This fact can be utilized in two ways, illustrated in Fig. 1: 1) If the cavity roof is reasonably flat (which it may sometimes be since the unsaturated top brine will be in contact with an insoluble rock stratum), extra-strong seismic reflections will be received from the salt stratum where the solid has been replaced by liquid.

The problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, engineers, and operators matter for serious consideration. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, due largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained ill the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more Revere and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-day as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes. I call attention to two ingots from work done at Pencoyd, Pa., 16 years ago. These ingots were bottom-poured, cast at the same time from the same center-runner, the one being 20 by 24 in. and the other 13 by 16 in. in size. The development of gas fields, oil fields and aquifers for storing natural gas is treated from two main vieu.-points: (I) the volumetric storage capacity for gas in a given situation and (2) the prediction of the number of wells required for the delivery of gas. Other experiences in the design and operation of storagc fields are incluclerl INTRODUC TION Storage of natural gas in underground reservoirs near the terminus of long distance pipelines has been the prime factor in opening the space heating market to the natural gas industry. Storagc has permitted a major. increase in both the load and the load factor of pipe-lines; some are now operating at steady load throughout the year. Thus, underground storage has been responsible for the rapid increase in demand for natural gas in recent years. Three types of reservoirs have been used for gas storage: natural gas reservoirs, oil reservoirs, and waterbearing sands or aquifers. This paper presents the factors to be considered when developing gas storage reservoirs of these three categories. There are two prime considerations tor any storage reservoir: (1) the volume of gas which a given reservoir will store advantageously and (2) the number 01 wells needed to provide the required peak deliverability. These two problems will be considered for the three types of reservoirs just noted STORAGE IN PARTIALLY DEPLETED GAS FIELDS Early storage operations consisted of replenishing the natural gas in a depleted gas field situated adjacent to the market. Today, newly discovered fields near the market may be considered for storage, and this discussion applies equally to both types of reservoirs. For reservoirs originally containing gas or oil, the question of the impermeability of the cap rock nor-mally does not arise. However, such fields are likely to have many wells drilled either to or through the reservoir under consideration. Positive assurance must be obtained that such wells are or can be made mechanically tight. Corroded casings may need to be lined or permanently plugged. Abandoned wells should bc reopened and properly cemented. The volumetric capacity for gas storage depends upon space available in the porous rock as well as pressure and temperature of the gas in the reservoir. The production-pressure decline data on partially depleted gas reservoirs without water drive permit calculation of the reservoir space for gas. Isopachous maps of sand volume and porosity data for the reservoir rock provide an alternate method of calculating the pore volume for water-drive reservoirs. The pressure range selected for the storage cycle depends upon ()) the safe upper limit of pressure. 2) the flow capacity of wells and (3) compression requirements when injecting gas into the reservoir or delivering to market. Normally, gas and oil fields have pressures at discovery in the range of 0.43 to 0.52 psi/ft of depth. Pressures of around 1.0 to 1.2 psi/ft of depth appear to lift the overburden1-3 and invite uncontrolled movement of fluids in the porous rock. Some top pressure is normally selected for a storage reservoir ranging from below discovery pressure for deeper reservoirs to 0.65 psi/ft of depth for shallower reservoirs. Pressures to 0.66 psi/ft have been experienced without difficulty. The lower pressure limit is set by water intrusion accompanying low pressures, reduced flow capacity for wells at lower pressures and compression requirements. Depletion-type gas reservoirs often encounter water problems in the later stages of gas production. Such water intrusion may be due to movement from the surrounding aquifer. Accordingly, displacement of this water back into the aquifer by gas pressure and subsequent surges of water corresponding to the gas storage pressure cycle must be considered. Storage fields often produce in four months a volume of gas equal to its initial content. Rapid decreases in reservoir pressure occur, such as 20 psi/day. Accordingly, closed-in pressure observation wells which reflect the pressure in the bulk of the reservoir are required for following the operation of the reservoir. It has been found that a plot of observation wellhead pressures against gas content, Fig. 1, is very useful in observing operation of the field, checking the inventory and predicting future behavior. The plot is based on a given quantity of base or cushion gas in place. The injection and withdrawal curves may spread depending upon the homogeneity of the reservoir rock. permeability of the rock, well spacing and flow rates.

Creep activation energies for single aluminum crystals favorably oriented for shear by (010) [101] glide were detemined over the temperature range from 78" to 900°K. Observations of slip bands on the specimen surface were made in conjunction with the investigation. From 78" to 780°K, the activation energies obtained in this imestigation agreed closely with those previously found for creep by (111) [101] slip. Between 78" and 140°K, the activation energy was identified with the Peierls process, while between 260°and 780°K the activation energy was close to that for cross-slip. The coarse wavy slip bands nominally parallel to the (010) plane observed above 260°K were attributed to fine cross-slip. From 800" to 900°K, unusually high apparent activation energies ranging from 28,000 to 54,000 cal per mole were obtained. These apparent activation energies were attributed to re crystallization. AS illustrated in Fig. 1, a recent investigation1 has shown that creep of aluminum single crystals by the (111) [i01] mechanism is controlled by three unique processes, each of which is characterized by a single activation energy which is independent of the applied stress and the creep strain. A comparison of the observed activation energies with theoretically calculated values permits a fairly clear identification of the three operative creep processes. Below 450°K, where the activation energy for creep is 3,400 cal per mole, the deformation is controlled by the Peierls process, the activation energy for creep agreeing well with that calculated by seeger2 for the energy required to nucleate the motion of a dislocation loop against the atomic forces of the lattice. Between 590° and 750°K, the observed activation energy for creep of about 28,000 cal per mole agrees well with the energy necessary to induce cross-slip. Seeger and schoeck3 estimate that the activation energy is about 24,000 cal per mole whereas Friedel4 recently calculated this activation energy to be 28,000 cal per mole. Above 800°K the activation energy of 35,500 cal per mole that was observed for creep agrees well with that estimated for self-diffusion in aluminum.= In this range the operative rate-controlling slip process has been clearly identified as that arising from the climb of edge dislocations. The objective of this investigation is to ascertain whether a single crystal of aluminum favorably oriented for simple shear in the [loll direction on the (010) plane might exhibit uniquely different activation energies for creep from those obtained previously for (111) [101] slip. Whereas the exis- tence of such unique activation energies would constitute incontrover table evidence for new mechanisms of slip, the absence of any new activation energies might suggest that slip of aluminum is confined to the (111) [loll mechanism. Several factors prompted the selection of the (010) [101] orientation for study. First, there are more reported observations of (010) [loll slip than of any other nonoctahe-dral mechanism.8-10Secondly, Chalmers and Martius1l have concluded from considerations of the energies of dislocations that (010) slip is the second most favored mechanism in face-centered-cubic metals. Finally, favorable orientations for simple shear by the (010) [loll mechanism provide the least favored orientation for slip by the (111) [101] mechanism. EXPE-RIMENTAL PRO-CEDURE The high-purity aluminum stock, specimen preparation, shear fixture, extensometry, and experimental technique used in this investigation were the same as those previously reported.' The finished specimen had a central reduced section 0.190 in. wide and 0.590 in. in diam and 1/4-in. grip sections at both sides, 0.690 in. in diameter. The specimen was oriented in the stainless steel grips of the shear fixture with the (010) plane perpendicular to the dumbbell axis and the [loll direction parallel to the stress axis within 2 deg. Creep activation energies were calculated in the previously described manner1 from determinations of the instantaneous change in shear strain rate produced by an abrupt 15 to 20 deg increase or decrease in test temperature. In 1955, the U.S. Army started to experiment in Greenland with tunneling in glacial ice and later in frozen glacial moraine. By 1960, long adits and experimental rooms had been successfully excavated. Full mechanization with coal-cutting machinery was most efficient in ice but drilling and blasting were necessary in bouldery moraine. In 1963, the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, (USA CRREL; redesignated U.S. Army Terrestrial Sciences Center July 1, 1968) started a tunnel in the frozen silt of central Alaska near Fairbanks. The original adit of 360 ft (109 m) was successfully driven in the permafrost by a twin-rotor tunnel-boring machine, the Alkirk Cycle Miner. The workings were enlarged in 1966 and 1967 by standard mining techniques in which jackhammers, steam points, and augers were compared. A mechanical coal cutter was tried to supplement drilling and blasting. In 1968, airblasting techniques were used successfully for breaking out the frozen silt. All mine products were loaded mechanically and hauled by self-dumping shuttle car. Pneumatic methods of transport were tried for both dust removal and for conveying blast products up to 3-in. maximum size. Studies of the effects of natural winter ventilation through a shaft showed that tunnel closure could be reduced by lowering the adjacent ground temperature. It is concluded that underground openings in frozen ground should be cut and maintained at well below freezing temperatures to hold deformation to a minimum. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This chapter deals with aspects of tunneling not previously discussed in the conference papers in this book. The chief differences are that the three tunnels lie entirely within frozen material and are relatively small, since they were constructed mainly for research. First attempts to apply computers for the modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing unit operations date back to almost twenty years. Since then substantial efforts have been directed to the development of computer software for mineral processing. Current literature indicates considerable activities in the development of computer packages for interactive and batch simulation of individual unit operations and integrated plant operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various simulation systems that have been described in the literature along with a discussion of present trends in the development of mineral processing simulation software. Finally, the paper includes a detailed discussion of the desirable features in future simulation packages.

JOHN LIVERMORE CHRISTIE belongs to that group of metallurgists who entered the industrial field during World War I and have been responsible for many of the important metallurgical developments since that time. He was born in Montclair, N. J., on Jan. 31, 1894. After graduating from Montclair High School he attended Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, received his Ph.B. degree in chemistry in 1915 and that same year was employed by the Bridgeport Brass Co. in its laboratory. Among his first duties was the return to Sheffield Scientific School for two years of graduate work in metallography under C. H. Mathewson; receiving his M.S. degree in 1917. Thus we see him becoming one of that group of eminent physical metallurgists who, with Dr. Mathewson's teaching as a foundation, have done outstanding work in metallurgy.

Bulk density variations can usually be minimized by properly mixing the material before moisture measurement. The measuring of moisture on material being with- drawn directly from storage bins requires some form of bulk density correction. In Bethlehem's pellet plants continuous automatic bulk density correction and uniform feed-rate control are obtained with Bethlehem's patented Bin Level Control System. With this sys- tem a single probe, suspended or inserted in the bin, senses whether material is at the proper level in the bin and automatically regulates filter speed to control the filter-cake discharge rate to maintain this level. The level of concentrate in the filter-cake bin can thereby be controlled to within ± 1/2 in. of the point of contact between the concentrate and the probe. Material thickness on the conveyor does not have to be controlled accurately and mix compositions can vary widely as long as they do not contain variable amounts of water-soluble electrolytes. In sinter plants, errors caused by changes in normal feed rate and bed height are minimized by counter-weights that permit the free-floating to maintain a uniform contact pressure on the mix. Large changes in mix resistance can be taken care of either by resetting the control point or by adjusting the calibration control.

The object of the present investigation was to discover a physical basis for rank differentiation of coals, particularly the coals of the Illinois basin. Vitrainl was selected as the most appropriate coal material to use in the investigation, because of its homogeneity and ease of acquisition and handling. Previous Investigations.—Hoffman and Jenker2 have shown that their index of reflection is a characteristic of coal rank and that the Leitz slit microphotometer may be used in determining the different intensities of reflection. Zhemchuzhnikov3 measured the luster of several Russian coals with a color analyzer and found that the degree of luster was indicative of rank. Luster-volatile matter curves based on data from Sucan and Donetz coals were satisfactorily used for determining the rank or volatile content of other coals after the luster strength was determined. In 1934 Fisher4 reported refractive indices of 1.76 for bituminous vitrain and 1.87 for semibituminous vitrain. Investigation of Angle of Polarization.—Early in the present investigation several determinations of the refractive indices of the vitrains were made by immersing the minus 150 plus 200-mesh powder in oils. It was found that all the samples fell within the range 1.6 to 1.8. However, difficulty was encountered in securing oils in this high index range that were closely enough spaced to separate some of the coals. The writers made a number of determinations of the angle of maximum polarization from the polished surfaces of the vitrains and derived their refractive indices by the procedure described in the following paragraphs. Johannsen5 states the fundamental concepts underlying this procedure as follows: In general, in an isotropic medium light vibrates in all directions at right angles to the direction of propagation, and when it meets with another isotropic medium at an angle, part of the light is reflected and part refracted. Alteration of the electronic distribution of mineral surfaces by light irradiation has been used to modify the adsorption characteristics of flotation reagents. Energy of a few electron volts is suficient to cause the necessary transitions that either enhance or retard the adsorption phenomenon. The adsorption characteristics of potassium ethyl xanthate on galena and marmatite are presented as functions of the energy of illumination, type of semiconductor, and surface oxidation. In dilute solutions, the adsorption differences are readily detected by controlled kinetic measurements. The correlation between the electronic distribution and the adsorption and desorption phenomena at the solid surface is gaining more attention and acceptance. These interrelations have found a practical application in mineral processing since all of the sulfide minerals display semiconducting properties. By varying the ratio of free electron to electron vacancies, the separation of ilmenite from rutilel and zircon from pyrochlore" has been executed successfully. Plaksin et al.' indicate three possible ways of utilizing the semiconductor properties of a mineral. The first one involves the control of the oxidation-reduction potential of the liquid phase, the second one consists of allowing selected additives to diffuse through the mineral surface, while the third one entails a change in the adsorption and chemical activity of minerals by irradiating their surface. The aim of the present work is to consider the effect of irradiation on the adsorption-desorption characteristics of natural minerals. ARGUMENTS and discussions were not lacking either Wednesday or Thursday mornings, when the geophysicists got together. The first session, under the chairmanship of Paul Weaver, was devoted largely to theoretical papers, except for the first one by F. W. Lee, which was a progress report. This speaker mentioned some of the high lights of geophysical exploration during the last year, such as the recently announced extension of the Rand gold fields through magnetic exploration, and the continued activity in the oil fields of this country. Even this brought forth some disagreements, Paul Weaver feeling that credit was being given geophysics where it was not due for the discovery of certain oil fields. In this criticism Everette DeGolyer concurred, and both agreed that geophysicists must lean over backward when it comes to taking credit for discoveries. The troublesome question of interpreting resistivity curves is always being aired, and Lynn G. Howell's paper, presented briefly by the chairman, served to clear up a moot point raised last year by M. King Hubbert's work. By use of Maxwell's theory of images the author calculated that the effect of a thin, conductive sheet placed perpendicularly across the middle of a four electrode system should bring the resistivity curve up to a figure equivalent to the resistivity of the surrounding medium, but no higher. Variations from this he explained as being due to dirt on the surface of the sheet. The difficult question of interpreting three-layer curves was tackled bravely in Thomas Manhart's paper, presented in abstract by S. F. Kelly. The author seems to be attaining some success through dividing three-layer curves into two approximation curves of the two-layer type.

THE name molybdena was employed by Pliny to denote various substances resembling lead. Later this name was applied to galena-the naturally occurring sulfide of lead-or substances of similar appearance. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was applied to graphite and to the mineral sulfide of molybdenum (MoS2) now called molybdenite. This confusion is quite understand- able inasmuch as these substances look and feel very much alike. In 1778, the Swedish chemist Scheele published a treatise in which he pointed out essential differences between graphite and molybdenite. On treatment with nitric acid, molybdenite, unlike graphite, produced a peculiar white earth with acidic properties which he called molybdic acid. Since the same mineral gave off sulfurous fumes on heating, he concluded that it was a sulfide of molybdenum. In 1790, there appeared an account of the isolation by P. J. Hjelm of the new element molybdenum, as a metallic powder, by heating the oxide with carbon. It was not until Bertelius conducted the necessary experiments, about 1818 to 1825, that the foundation of the chemistry of molybdenum was laid. The only recorded use of molybdenum during the first century after its isolation was as a chemical reagent, primarily for the determination of phosphorus. It was not until the last decade of the nineteenth century that the use of molybdenum in steel appears to have been investigated. A

THE gas phase is one of the indispensible ingredients in flotation operations. Flotation depends on the collision of an air bubble and a mineral particle in a pulp and their ability to remain in contact long enough for adherence to take place. Before it is possible to understand the mechanics of air bubble-mineral particle encounter, it is necessary to learn more about the nature of bubbles themselves before collision with a mineral particle has taken place. To date, little work has been done on air bubbles in flotation systems. In 1945 Fahrenwald1 presented a study of the role of frothers on air bubbles and on aeration in flotation, and recently Wark and Sutherland2 discussed the work of Rosenberg3 in relation to flotation. The research reported in this present article was undertaken to investigate systematically the effect of bubble size and the concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficient of single bubbles in distilled water. Most of the work is concerned with the effect of a-terpineol on bubble motion in water, but studies were made with potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium amyl xanthate.
