Minerals: When man first picked up an appropriately shaped stone and fastened it to a stick of wood to create a primitive axe or hammer he started down the long road of mineral dependency that has continued until today (Fig. 2). Though he did not realize it, that man and his stone axe created an extremely simple form of mineral economy. The struggle against extinction from that day has been fought with minerals. In addition to providing himself with a means to fight for survival, he also exhibited an increase in intelligence. As his curiosity was stimulated, his ability increased to provide himself with better mineral and metal weapons and tools. Today, when we examine the artifacts of past civilizations, we measure the degree of development that had been attained by the variety of metals and minerals possessed and how they were used. The metals employed are so characteristic of the level of intelligence that we have named the various stages of human progress by the metals that were most commonly utilized. Thus, mall went through the Stone Age, the 13ronze Age, the Iron Age and now has reached the Steel Age. The first period of mineral development, the Stone 4ge, began during late Pliocene time. In this first mineral age, prehistoric man began to shape stones by chip- ping off small pieces until the stone assumed the crude form he wanted. Some twenty years ago the author of a book,* by which, for the first time, molecular action was made to account for nearly all phenomena in hydrodynamics, began his preface as follows: " It is contrary to all experience, that any branch of science should suddenly cut short its own line of reasoning, and drop all connection with its past, and yet as quickly re-establish itself on an entirely new basis. It is, therefore, not without justification that this book should be met with caution and even distrust." When the newly-discovered natural facts and laws presented in this paper were, in 1891, first laid before the officers of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, they might have been preceded by a preface to the same effect; and the expression would have found its justification by the actual experience these facts and laws met with. OPERATIONS at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hydroseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the manufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. [t] About 3130 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and 100 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. Up to the present time, the corporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modified-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Redding, Calif., the total demand being 5.800,000 bbl. of cement. The past year has been another year of vigorous fundamental research in mineral processing as evidenced by the active publication of results, particularly in Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States and USSR. It was also noteworthy for several significant meetings and conferences. The Basic Science sessions at the AIME Annual Meeting continued to attract an increasing audience and the sessions were especially notable for the active discussion of papers. The third Engineering Foundation Conference on Particulate Matter Systems,1 chaired by F. F. Aplan, was held in Milwaukee in August and attracted over 100 experts from five continents. Sessions at this week-long conference covered comminution, particle characterization, separation of fine particles, fluid-solid separations as applied to pollution control, flotation kinetics, particle-particle interactions and particle agglomeration. This popular conference will be continued under John Karpinski of Bethlehem Steel Corp. as 1968 chairman.

During the last 15 years much attention has been given to the " contact-metamorphic" ore deposits which mainly occur in limestone close to intrusive contacts. In general, these deposits are characterized by the association of magnetite and simple sulphides with the so-called L'contact-metamorphic" silicates. These silicates comprise garnet, epidote, vesuvianite, tremolite, wollastonite, diopside, hedenbergite, ilvaite, and many other rarer forms. The contact-metamorphic zones contain also in places minerals with boron, fluorine, and chlorine, like axinite, tourmaline, danburite, fluorite, and scapolite. There is also more or less quartz and coarsely recrystallized calcite. The simple sulphides embrace pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, zincblende, more rarely arsenopyrite. On the whole, sulphantimonides and sulph-arsenides are rare. Deposits of magnetite or chalcopyrite or of both are most common. The deposits have an irregular or rudely tabular form, following main contacts, dike contacts, or stratification planes; they rarely extend for more than 1,500 or 2,000 ft. from the contact; far more commonly they only reach a distance of a few hundred feet from that surface. The deposits are usually formed by replacement of limestone, or allied calcareous rock. Apparently they are found both in relatively pure and in impure carbonate rock. The deposits are geoiogical bodies of a chemical and mineralogical character differing greatly from the adjoining intrusive rock and from the unaltered limestone. They are rich in silica and iron, with more or less of lime, magnesia, alumina, sulphur, and rarer metals like copper. The so-called contact-metamorphic silicates which form the gangue usually are coextensive with the metallic minerals, though of course not necessarily with the merchantable ore. All opinions agree in holding the deposits of epigenetic origin, later than the inclosing limestone. Regarding the origin of the metals and the genesis of the ores there are several opinions. 1. THE failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where, weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement, therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable; easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem in-volves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration, products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,1 which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion, which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard` mortars.

Many of the failures in vocational education are due to the fact that the educational methods were not designed to the capabilities, habits, and environments of those to be trained; rather they were based on the policy that education is education and lessons are lessons, whether for youngsters of fifteen or for men of forty. Vocational education among miners involves, first, a study of the men themselves, their habits, and the use of their leisure time; second, a study of the differences between the methods of teaching required for men and for children. Certain fundamental requirements of training methods for miners are reasonably universal and may be applied with success to any ordinary mining community. The rate of labor turnover is another consideration; it would be useless to design a four-year course for men who remain in one place only a few months. Length of Course The first consideration should be the length of the course. Few mining communities have a sufficiently stable population to make it possible successfully to carry on a course for over a year. While some men might complete a four-year course, the number is comparatively small compared with the number to whom a shorter course would be of service, and it is better to raise the standards of education even a little for a large number than to raise them to a high level for a few. It is perfectly possible to attain both objectives by arranging the courses in small units; all the units, when grouped together, should comprise a fairly complete course, yet any one unit should be complete in itself and of benefit to the workman. It should not take many of these units to make a miner or a timberman out of a mucker; but to do this the course should be short, because muckers seldom stay in one place long. By grouping a number of these units together it Would be possible for a miner to become a shift boss or a shift boss a foreman, and so on. As far as possible the units of the course should not be dependent on those preceding or following. The workman understands the completed job but he is not accustomed to carrying on several jobs at the same time and

MUCH of White Pine's success is due to the mechanization of mining operations and the development of an efficient beneficiation process to extract usable copper from the low-grade ore (averaging slightly more than 1 pct copper content). When the mine was first opened, all ore was trucked to a conveyor system installed in the slope leading out of the mine. But as new mining areas have been opened up at increasing distances from the slope, conveyors have replaced the trucks for much of the haulage. This conveyor program is expected to continue as mining progresses. Here is how the present underground system functions: Run-of-mine ore is dumped into two truck hoppers and withdrawn from the bottom of each hopper by a 60-in. apron feeder 22 ft long (see diagram). Collecting conveyors 54 in. wide and 44 ft long receive the material from the apron feeders and discharge to two main-line 54-in. conveyors, one 2000 ft and the other 2600 ft long. Operating at 312 fpm and handling 1200 tph, the main-line conveyors converge near the bottom of the tunnel leading out of the mine and discharge into two 72x168-in. Vibrex screens. Ore under 8 in. goes directly to the bin beneath. The oversize is fed to two 32x40-in. jaw crushers and after crushing joins the 8-in. material in the bin.

THIS year's Chairman of the Mineral industry Education Division is, like his predecessors, no novice in that field, having been in 1928 Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee which labored so well that it was enlarged into a Division of the Institute's activities . For almost a quarter of a century lie has been a dean in mining and engineering schools, with considerable experience before that as a teacher. A native-born New Englander (June 23, 1881), he naturally went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Bachelor's degree in mining in 1904. Just why a Fitchburg. Massachusetts boy yearned to he a mining engineer he has never explained, but why should any boy ever have to explain why lie wants t? be a mining engineer? Like the old rhyme about the reasons why a man should drink, "any other reason why" is adequate..

The effect of cold work on the electrical and magnetic properties of solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys was studied. The electrical resistivity of solution-treated and of aged Cu-1.7 wt pct Fe samples increased by up to 25 and 140 pct, respectively, follozcing a 55 pct reduction of area. The principle contributions to the increase of resistivity of the solution-treated and aged samfiles are examined. Measurements of the .saturation induction, coercive force, and stacking fault Probability are also reported. 1 HIS paper is the second in a series which examine the behavior of the electrical and magnetic prop- erties of Cu-Fe alloys. The first paper1 was primarily concerned with the effects of thermal treatment whereas the present paper examines the effects of cold work on solution-treated and aged Cu-Fe alloys. The effects of cold work on the transformation of the coherent fcc iron precipitate to the ferromagnetic form2 and the coercive force and remanence3 have already been described, but the unusually large increases in resistivity (up to 220 pct) which occlir with cold work have not been reported previously. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used for alloy preparation, heat treatment, and electrical and magnetic measurements are described elsewhere.1 The specimens, initially 4-in. lengths of 0.0625-in. diam wire, were cold worked by swaging in hardened steel dies. AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

The factors involved in selecting, a drive system for a grinding mill, including gearing arrangement, motor selection, and electric-supply system limitations are reviewed. Equipment costs are evaluated on a dollar per horsepower basis and starting performance is analyzed, the latter making use of a recently developed computer program. The present interest in large-diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a 7 to 8,000 hp mill will cost from $350 to $600,000 which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance, and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functionsestablishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance. Large primary grinding mills can represent a major portion of the cost of a plant and the drive system accounts for a substantial part of this cost. These facts justify a careful analysis of the drive requirements and all of the factors involved in ultimately arriving at the best system for the lowest cost. A number of excellent papers have been published on various aspects of mill drives. The authors have used information from these papers in making a study of a drive for a 7600-hp, 32 x 12-ft autogenous mill. This was a broad investigation, including mechanical and electrical design, layout, performance, and maintenance considerations, and overall economics leading to the selection of the optimum system for that mill. This paper was developed from the study and includes information applicable to large mills in general. For a successful and economical application, the drive must be considered as a system and all of the components analyzed to determine their effect on the system. This requires the participation of the mill designer, gear, and other mechanical component manufacturers, motor manufacturer, plant designer, and operator. A careful analysis of the mill torque requirements is first necessary to provide a basis for selection of the mechanical and electrical drive components. Because of manufacturing limitations on the size and capacity of gearing available for these low-speed applications, an evaluation of costs for various gear ratios and configurations in conjunction with motor speeds is required. Consultation with the power-supply company is necessary to determine limitations on motor-starting disturbances and to analyze operating costs on the basis of existing rate structures and low characteristics. Finally, consideration must be given to the drive arrangement and its affect on plant layout, space requirements, and location of auxiliary equipment for the selected process. There are presently three basic schemes for driving a mill. The first is a direct drive by a motor operating at mill speed with no gearing. The second is by a higher-speed motor through a trunnion-connected gear drive. The third is by a motor through the more conventional pinion and ring-gear with the option of an interposing gear box to permit greater motor speed than pinion shaft speed. [(Fig. 1.)] Several manufacturers have or are presently developing motors which drive the mill directly without the use of gears. One arrangement has the motor armature intimately surrounding the mill shell-discharge spout or extension of the trunnion journal. The motor stator is then supported independently and surrounds the shell or trunnion-mounted rotor. Another variation utilizes an independent mill-speed motor connected to the trunnion by a drive shaft and flexible couplings.

A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observation of this property, which often is referred to as "damping. capacity," might be a useful indicator of structural. changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observable. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in fundamental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction os mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is nor well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of itt changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention: The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

The importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.l It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a, new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Ressemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstatten figures.4 Osmond Observed structures in a steel ingot analog-ous to those found in meteorites. THERE have been numerous papers in the literature1 on the subjects of secondary and tertiary recrystalli-zation in silicon steels. Secondary re crystallization is believed to occur in silicon steel by either a surface-energy phenomenon such as in the usual development of cube texture or by a second-phase phenomenon such as in the usual production of cube-on-edge texture, (110)[001]. Tertiary recrystallization in silicon steel is thought to be a surface-energy phenomenon in which, for example, grains having a (110) plane parallel to the sheet grow at the expense of other grains in the matrix including those having a (100) plane parallel to the plane of the sheet. In all these instances, the orientations involve either a preferred (100) or (110) plane in the plane of the sheet. Until very recently, there had been no experimental evidence reported of the occurrence of a texture by secondary or tertiary recrystallization that involves a (111) plane in the plane of the sheet, although Kohler reported that grains having the (111) plane parallel to the sheet surface can also grow by a surface energy mechanism. Stickels observed a secondary texture in iron described as "near {554}(225)" about 5 deg from {lll}(211).3 Mee reported that in a vacuum-remelted commercial 3 pct Si steel {lll}(hkl) secondary recrystallization took place in a high vacuum and in pure hydrogen.4 Recently in our Laboratory, large-grained structures such as shown in Fig. 1 having an orientation near (111)[211] or (111)[2ii] have been observed. The arrows point to areas of relatively small matrix grains of the kind that the much larger (111) grains consumed while growing. It is of interest that the matrix grains of samples annealed at 2000°F were essentially the same size as those in samples annealed at 2200°F, a matrix-grain-size stability that is characteristic of secondary recrystallization processes. A torque disc taken from Grain 4 of the sample shown in Fig. 1 revealed a very flat magnetic-torque curve, as expected, with a maximum torque of 7000 dyne-cm per cu cm compared to the typical 180,000 dyne-cm per cu cm observed for conventional (110)[001] textured material. A back-reflection Laue pattern for Grain 4 is shown in Fig. 2 and indicates a near-perfect (111)[211] orientation. The other six numbered grains in the sample of Fig. 1 had a similar orientation. The small circles next to each number were the target areas for the X-ray beam. The starting material was an 0.011-in.-thick oriented silicon steel, (110)[001] texture, containing 3 pct Si. It was lightly pickled, cold-rolled to 0.005 in., and annealed 4 hr at 2200°F within a nickel box (not gas-tight) inside a tube furnace through which dry hydrogen was flowing. The samples were heated to 1500°F in 1 hr and then at 60°F per hr to 2200°F. There were other

An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB hard disk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this automatic truck dispatching system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites, and three material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the system is fully operational on a realtime mode.

LEASING the Teapot dome to the Mammoth Oil Co. is the culminating anticlimax of the "conserva-tion movement." It is just the touch required to make a full fiasco of the whole affair. If the revered wielder of the "Big Stick" were still with us, we could hear it fall harder than it did on Ballinger. Of all the oil reserves set aside by presidential decree, there was only one which certainly could con-serve much oil for the future. This was Naval Reserve No. 3, on the Teapot dome, Wyoming. After secret negotiations, carefully guarded from the press and from the knowledge of other oil men, we are suddenly informed that this last and only known chance to save much oil for future naval needs has been given away for early development.
