As I have attempted briefly to show you, gentlemen, the present position of the mining and metallurgical industries of this country offers in several respects most important indications of radical change. This is an epoch for more than one branch of these industries. We are commencing again to export copper; we have shifted the main production of lead from the Mississippi Valley to the far West, besides developing a new production of that metal in Missouri; we have seen the price of quicksilver go up, and the price of iron go down to such an extent as to affect profoundly, on the one hand, the great business of extracting silver by amalgamation, through the Washoe process in this country and the patio process in Mexico, and, on the other hand, the various manufactures employing iron as a raw material; above all, the manufacture of steel. But the epoch which has occurred in the relative value of gold and silver, in consequence of causes which I shall attempt to explain, and among which the extraordinary increase in the silver product of Nevada is not the least; this epoch is, perhaps, the most striking feature in the review of our situation. Since my official duties in connection with the mining industry of the Pacific slope and the Great Interior Basin have led me to pay particular attention to this subject, I have thought it not inappropriate to lay before you a somewhat extended account of its history. It is a topic of peculiar interest, because of the general use of these two metals as standards of value in the exchange of commodities. THE following presentation of the more important accumulated facts and probabilities involved in copper ore deposition is based on my experience in examination work and study of the extensive litera-ture of the subject; to make personal mention of all sources of information would require the naming of a small army of able geologists and other investigators who have contributed to, building up the science. I have tried to present the salient features of the subject in logical order and condensed form, and to point out the relative importance of processes involved. Doubt-less many geologists could suggest some changes and many additions. ORIGINAL SOURCE The original source of all copper was in the earth's interior; it has been brought to the outer part of the earth, within reach of man, in three ways: (1) By intrusions and flows of basic igneous rocks containing copper in minute quantities, presumably as silicate or sulfide. No orebodies have been formed by this method. (2) As segregations within intrusive igneous rocks, the copper minerals having solidified at the same time as the rock itself. The few deposits known to have been formed in this manner have been of little or no importance. The oft quoted Sudbury nickel-copper deposits are now known to belong to the class following. (3) By gaseous or liquid aqueous emanations from ,large deep-seated masses of intrusive molten rock. These emanations, or mineral solutions, ascended through zones of connected openings in the earth's crust and dropped their load at points far above their source. Deposits formed in this manner were the primary source of nearly all, if not all, of the world's copper production.

Sanitary land filling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Knowledge of ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for natural limitations at a particular site. Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites; (2) site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources; (3) research on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills; and (4) formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers. Throughout history, man has disposed of unwanted materials by dumping. As urbanization has increased, haphazard dumping practices have given way to disposal under more controlled conditions because of increasing congestion of population and production of waste and greater concern for public health and environmental amenities. Many states and communities have already outlawed open dumping and open burning of refuse. The only practical methods of disposal of large volumes of refuse, therefore, are contained, high-temperature incineration, or burial in a sanitary landfill. In Illinois, regulation of solid waste disposal has been delegated to the Environmental Protection Agency. Each session of the legislature since 1965 has passed increasingly strict laws regulating waste diposal. As a result, the work of evaluating sanitary landfill sites has increased significantly for both the Department of Public Health, now the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois State Geological Survey, which advises the Agency on matters of ground-water geology and pollution. In fact, our ground-water staff spends as much time on studies relating to waste disposal, primarily sanitary landfills, as on ground-water resource studies. Many other geological agencies are experiencing similar demands for increased assistance in solving waste-disposal problems. This paper summarizes some of the salient features of the sanitary landfill concept, describes activities of the Illinois Geological Survey in ground-water and engineering geology relating to landfills, and suggests policies that need consideration. A sanitary landfill is located and operated in such a way that vermin and pests, nuisances, and degradation of air and water are kept at acceptable levels. Some of the physical requirements of a sanitary landfill are all-weather roads for year-round access, fences to retain blowing paper, a daily cover of at least six inches of suitable earth material, and a final cover of at least 2 ft of earth material. Dumping into or adjacent to standing water generally is not allowed. Two common operating techniques are used. In the first, trenches are dug, the refuse is placed in them, and the earth removed from the trenches is used to cover the waste. In the second method, area fill, refuse is placed in low ground and covered with earth from adjacent high areas. The hydrology of the site is a prime consideration in locating sanitary landfills. Putrescible refuse, if saturated above field capacity, produces a leachate that usually has a high concentration of dissolved solids.2 As the leachate also acts as an agent for transporting bacterial pollutants, it constitutes a potential pollution hazard. To reduce the production of leachates, the topography of the landfill area should be such that surface water will not flow into or through the fill. Operations that will result in refuse disposal below or near the highest known water-table elevation may be required to take corrective or preventive measures to protect the ground water. In practice, under humid conditions such as prevail in Illinois, locations where disposal can take place above the water table are relatively few because surficial materials are commonly fine-grained, which permits slow gravity drainage and results in high degrees of saturation (100% moisture content) near the surface. At some sites, although disposal has taken place above the water table, ground-water mounds have developed, resulting in permanent saturation of the refuse. The remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combustion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publications have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

The capillary effects in reservoir rock are discussed in terms of the pressures they cause in sandstones and dolomites. Data for the two-phase case (oil-gas or water-gas) and for the three-phase case (oil, water and gas in rock) are used to demonstrate that in one sense the wetting preference of a rock depends on its saturation. The nature of capillary hysteresis is described for partially stable conditions, and the concept is enlarged. Reproducibly measurable pressures include the "capillary pressure," which is the pressure difference between any two phases that are each interconnected; the "threshold pressure," necessary to force a nonwetting phase through partially saturated rock; the "displacement pressure," which is that special case of the threshold pressure in which both phases fully saturate separate portions of the rock. Displacement pressure is equal to the minimum value of the "capillary pressure." The theory of flow including capillary forces is developed at the producing surface of a well to reveal the presence there of a pressure discontinuity in the gas (or other nonwetting) phase that can be controlled to the end that more oil may be poduced from an oil field. Experiments with packed sand-flow tubes having artificial producing surfaces support the theory. Introduction The basic surface quantities acting in an oil field are two: namely, surface tensions and contact angles. These are the quantities, variously expressed, and particularized as spreading forces, adhesion tensions, heats of wetting, etc., which are measured in the laboratory by techniques mostly confined to flat or circularly cylindrical surfaces. Such measurements have not had the extensive engineering application they seem to deserve because in most practical cases they are unavoidably compounded with the complex and unapproached subject of the internal shape of the interstices of rock. In this paper it is intended that the pressure differences developed in rock by capillarity be examined, defined, and given some engineering use in terms of some new measurements that have been made. Such pressure differences—namely, the capillary pressure, the displacement pressure and the threshold pressure—seem to provide a proper contact between the basic molecular quantities and the oil field. While certain modifications of usage will be undertaken, the present effort rests upon the background of work by the U. S. Geological Survey,l by Versluys, and especially by W. 0. Smith, 3,4,5 which has been reviewed recently in papers by Leverett.=s7 The most important concept of pressure difference is the capillary pressure, a function of saturation that expresses the pressure difference between the interconnected phases in a rock. On July 25, the first copper ore From American Smelting & Refining Co.'s Mission open pit nine was sent into the new 15,000-tpd concentrator : three clays later, the first rail cars containing the Mission concentrate were sent north to the smelter at Hayden, Ariz. Thus two y,ears after stripping was started, Asarco's new mine, located south of Tucson. went on stream several months ahead of schedule. The plant, designed and constructed by Western Knapp Engineering Co., is expected to be operating at full capacity about September 1. with present plans calling for the copper concentrate from Mission to be shipped to Asarco's smelters at Hayden and El Paso.

REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania's important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

Commercially pure molybdenum specimens were irradiated in the Materials Testing Reactor for an estimated exposure of 1.9 to 5.9x10 20 thermal nvt. Prior to irradiation, the material was ductile in the tension test; whereas after irradiation, it was brittle. The results of tension tests conducted at various temperatures revealed that the transition temperature for this material had been increased from —30' to +70°C as a result of the radiation exposure. From metallographic studies, it is concluded that the embrittlement is due to submicroscopic changes which raise the flow stress-temperature curve of the material. PRIOR to ten years ago, the bombardment of metals with high speed heavy particles such as protons, deuterons, a particles, and neutrons was primarily of academic interest. These particles existed in extremely small numbers in a few laboratories and only under very special conditions. With the introduction of the nuclear power reactors, these particles are now available in enormous quantities and it has become important from a practical standpoint to learn how well metals withstand severe reactor radiations. The principal radiations of concern in reactors are neutrons and y rays, since the heavier charged particles exist only in limited regions of reactors. Seitz,' in a theoretical approach, has shown that all of these high energy particles, except y rays, have enough energy to knock atoms from lattice sites and that these knocked-on atoms have enough energy to cause additional displacements of neighboring atoms. The result of this process would be a lattice containing many imperfections in the form of interstitial atoms and vacancies. Hence, it would be expected that the properties of metals can be changed by reactor radiations, and such has been found to be the case. Only a limited amount of data have been published in the open literature,2,3 and these data have been for relatively low integrated-neutron-flux exposures. In general, one effect of reactor radiations on the mechanical properties of metals has been to increase strength and decrease ductility. It is now possible to irradiate specimens in the Materials Testing reactor at much higher fluxes and to higher integrated exposures than previously possible.' The data which are being presented here describe the effects of a relatively high exposure on some mechanical properties of molybdenum. Experimental Procedures Material: The molybdenum used in this investigation was obtained from the Climax Molybdenum Co. The two heats from which the material originated were melted under a vacuum of 5 to 30 microns and cast in 7 in. diam water-cooled copper molds. One ingot contained 0.061 pct C and the other 0.066 pct. Both ingots were hot worked by extrusion and rolling into % in. diam rods, after which they were annealed and straightened. The rods were subsequently heated to 1100°C in a hydrogen atmosphere and swaged to ½ in. diam rods at the Research Laboratory of the General Electric Co. The resulting material had an average hardness of 264 VPN, or 99.2 Rb, and had an average of 5000 grains per sq ml in the transverse section, Test Specimens: Substandard-size tensile specimens were prepared according to the specifications shown in Fig. 1. These specimens were used also for hardness measurements. The metallographic specimens were small disks which were polished, etched, and photographed at X1000 prior to irradiation. THE proposition to make pig-iron from magnetic concentrates and cobbed ore with charcoal-fuel weighing from 12 to 20 lb. per bushel is, on the face of it, not inviting; but the successful work that has been done under these adverse conditions warrants a permanent record in our Transactions, especially as it furnishes a comparison with, coke blast-furnace practice under similar conditions. The record of the furnace-practice is briefly summarized as follows:-The charcoal was made of hemlock, pine, spruce, balsam, maple, beech and birch woods. All the concentrates containing from 62 to 65 per cent. of iron would pass in. screen, of which about 34 per cent.. would pass an 80-mesh sieve. The cobbed ore, varying in composition from 32 to 47 per cent. metallic iron and from 23 to 32 per cent. of. silica, would pass through a I-in. ring, of which about 25 per cent. would pass a 1/8 in. screen. The furnace was blown in October 20,1903, with charcoal which was supposed to weigh when dry 18 lb. to the bushel. Some charcoal similar to this was stored in the stock-house for about a year and was then found to weigh 12 lb. per bushel. During the first 10 days of the blast, the furnace produced 362 tons of pig-iron, using 200 bushels of charcoal per ton of iron. From November 1st to 12th, the volume of the blast was increased gradually from 2,808 to 5,460 cu. ft. per minute, with practically no increase of output. The silicon-content of the resultant pig-iron averaged 0.75 per cent., with sulphur about 0.035 per cent. Although it has long been realized that gas recovery from a water-drive gas reservoir may be poor because of high residual saturations under water drive, it appears that only limited infomlation on the subject has been available until recently. This study was performed to show the qiiantitative potential importance of water influx. Results indicate that gas recovery may be very low in some cases: perhaps as low as 45 per cent of the initial gas in place. Gas recovery under water drive appear to depend in an important was on: (I) the prodirction rate and manner of production; (2) the residual gas saturation; (3) aquifer propertie.); and (4) the volumetric displacement effciency of water invading the gas reservoir. The manner of estimating water-drive gas reservoir recovery can vary considerably. Examples are: the steady-state tnethorl. the Hurst modified steady-state method, and various unsteady-state methods such ac. those of van Ever-dingen-Hurst, Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. The Carter-Tracy water influx expression was used in this study. In certain cases, it appears that gas recovery can be increased significantly by controlling the production rate and manner of production. For this reason, the potential importance of water influx in particular gas reservoirs should he investigated early to permit adequtrtr planning lo optirtize the pay reserves. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the economic importance of natural gas production has become increasingly apparent. This has been evidenced by more intensive exploration efforts aimed at gas production, and exploitation of both deep, as well as low-permeability gas reservoirs. Technical developments such as deep-penetration fracturing have made development of such formations economically feasible. Unfortunately, water influx has forced abandonment of a number of gas reservoirs at extraordinarily high pressures. Although reservoir engineering methods for estimating water influx have long been available, it appears that application of these methods to the water-drive gas reservoir has been sporadic.'a Available methods for estimating water influx which can be applied to the water-drive gas reservoir problem include the steady-state method,1 the Hurst modified steady-state method and various unsteady-state methods such as those of van Everdingen-Hurst. Hurst, and Carter-Tracy. Interesting applications of these solu- tions to gas reservoir and the aquifer gas-storage problems have appeared recently.3,12,14 The experimental study of residual gas saturations under water drive by Geffen et al. in 1952 indicated that residual gas saturations could be extremely high. A value of 35 per cent of pore volume is often used in field practice when specific information is not available. The study of Geffen et al. showed that residual gas saturation might be much higher in some cases. Naar and Henderson concluded that the residual non-wetting phase saturation under imbibition should be about half of the initial non-wetting phase saturation. The Naar and Henderson result that residual gas saturation under water influx should be about half the original gas saturation is recommended as an estimate if laboratory measurements are not available. Thus, it is clear that a considerable portion of the initial gas in place might be trapped in a water-drive gas reservoir as residual gas at high pressure. A full water-drive would result in loss of residual gas trapped at initial reser.voir pressure. Consideration of transient aquifer behavior leads to the conclusion that high-rate production of water-drive gas reservoirs could result in improved gas recovery by reduction of the abandonment pressure. However, there appears to be little quantitative information on this possibility. One of the few advantages of water-drive gas production appears to be improved deliverability through water-drive support of the reservoir pressure. There may also be an advantage in higher condensate recovery caused by pressure maintenance for gas-condensate water-drive reservoirs. In view of the preceding, this study was made to assess the potential importance of water-drive in gas reservoir engineering. The Carter-Tracy approximate water-influx expression was used because this equation offers some advantages in hand-calculation which do not appear to have been generally recognized.' However, calculations were performed in the main with a high-speed digital computer to permit evaluation of the effect of water-drive under a large variety of conditions. CALCULATION METHOD Water-drive gas reservoir performance can be estimated in a manner completely analogous to oil reservoir calculations: a materials balance is written for the reservoir, and a water influx equation is written for the aquifer. Siniltaneous solution provides the cun~ulative water influx and the reservoir pressure. When reservoir performance data (gas produced and reservoir pressures) are available, it is usually possible to match performance data to determine the initial gas in place and the water influx parameters —

The economic relationship between steepening slopes and decreasing waste removal requirements ahead of ore mining is one of the most important factors in the design of open-pit mines. The steepness and stability of the pit slopes often spells the difference between ore and waste profit or loss in low cost open-pit operations. Unfortunately, the technology necessary for designing stable rock slopes is still in the early stages of development. Past and current pit-design methods have been, and still are, empirical, with rock slopes frequently made too steep or too shallow. As such, large expenditures are often made for correcting slopes after failures occur, or for unnecessarily removing more waste material than required.

AMONG the genetically interesting iron ores of the United States are those of the St. Francis Mountains near Ironton and Iron Mountain, Missouri. They are specular hematite in porphyry. The Iron Mountain and Shepherd Mountain deposits are generally spoken of as veins and those of Pilot Knob, Cedar Hill, and Russell Mountain as bedded deposits. Iron Mountain has produced nearly 4,000,000 tons of ore and Pilot Knob about 1,500,000 tons. The output of the other three localities has been insignificant. Pilot Knob is no longer worked as an iron mine, but the rock is now being crushed for use as road metal. Iron Mountain has continued as an active producer. Hanna Co. and an extensive prospecting and exploration campaign was undertaken, so that the ultimate production of Iron Mountain will doubtless greatly exceed the figures mentioned. Previous Theories of Origin Descriptions of the deposits and theories of their origin have been concerned mainly with Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob, which represent the two contrasting types of occurrence. The Iron Mountain deposits have been considered of close magmatic origin by Whitney' in 18.54, Geijer2 in 1915, and Spurr3 in 1927. Whitney referred to them as of eruptive origin. Geijer considered them fissure fillings at magmatic temperatures. Spurr called them vein dikes formed from ore magma which was essentially fluid iron oxide. Schmidt4 in 1872 ascribed them to fissure filling by thermal chalybeate waters of meteoric origin. Nason5 in 1892 advanced essentially the same explanation. One of the best

IT is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halske6 reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys.

Crystal-chemical and stntctural properties of sulfide minerals are considered. The information gained is to be used to interpret (I ) freshly broken mineral surfaces, (2) modifications of the mineral surfaces, and (3) reactions at the mineral surfaces. From these basic disciplines, concepts with regard to the changes that surfaces undergo, reactions that might take place, the geometry of the interface, the state of different atoms and ions in the interface, and other physical and chemical properties of an interface must be developed, weighed and applied. The authors first deal with these conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environ men tal-interfacial relationships for several sulfide minerals. Qualitative and quantitative explanation of par-ticulate solid separations are unknown entities because of the lack of adequate models and mathematical relationships to explain the activity occurring between the solid and liquid phases. It is a transitional region in which it is difficult to ascertain the mechanisms of adsorption of ions, molecules, etc., on mineral surfaces, as well as other secondary reactions which occur in interfacial regions. Thus, in this paper the authors deal with conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environmental-interfacial relationships for sulfide minerals. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Interfacial Reactions:Interfacial reactions are the cruxes of flotation schemes as well as other processes such as thickening, filtration and hydrometallurgy. However, as noted by Klassen and Mokrousov: 1 "The problems concerning the surfaces of natural minerals, the laws governing simultaneous adsorption from aqueous solution on these surfaces of a whole series of reagents, the laws of the surface reactions and the properties of water layers separating the minerals, are all known to a first approximation only." An investigator has the privilege of postulating methods of solid-liquid interfacial reactions. REACTIONS WITH WATER - Water consists of hydronium (H3 O 4) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions in the ionized state. That this is so forms the basis for the postulated reaction of the hydrated hydrogen ion with net-negative mineral surfaces as depicted in Fig. 1. In this case water is bonded to mineral surfaces through hydrogen-bridge-type bonds - possibly hydrogen bonds. Although bonding of the van der Waal type may be responsible for this reaction, it is most likely that stronger bonds are involved. Once firmly bonded to the surface, the water layer is known to be quite tenacious. It is further speculated that a shear plane exists at some distance (see Fig. 1) away from the mineral surface. Exact location of this plane is not known, but in all probability it will be positioned across a weak bond of the hydrogen-bond type where the surface-attached water is coordinated to the original hydrated hydrogen ion. REACTION WITH METAL IONS - Klassen and Mokrousov ' state: "The presence of an ion in water leads to an immediate formation around that ion of a highly condensed atmosphere of water dipoles and thus to hydration of the ion." The fact is known that multivalent cations are strongly hydrated, usually by six or eight molecules of water, and that anions are not so strongly hydrated. Conceding the fact that thermodynamics, concentration, pH, and physical considerations are of utmost importance in truly explaining a mechanism of metal ions reaction with a hydrated mineral surface, it does seem logical that the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2 is feasible. In this reaction, the metal ion (M) is coordinated in one dimension - to the mineral-surface hydration layer. Note also that explanation of this reaction requires that the shear plane move to a less stable bond configuration; that is, the shear plane has moved to a position between the metal ion and the other coordinated water molecules which are more free to dissociate. Reactions as depicted in Fig. 2 should cause the formation of an apparent mineral surface which is net-positive. Immediately, it must be noted that measurements of apparent-mineral surfaces serve - within limits - to indicate a degree of ion-surface reaction capability. Probably no more significant change has come into the lives of men in the past two hundred years than their shift from major dependence on plants and animals to major dependence on minerals. From the dawn of history, nay from long before that dawn, food and clothing had been man's main concern. The wandering of the tribes in pastoral ages was in search of grass for their cattle; the patient work of the "man with the hoe" has ever been to supply food for himself and family and if he accomplished so much he had little strength, energy, or ambition for other things. The great civilizations of the past arose in the fertile valleys where food supply was abundant or on shores where by grace of the wind and primitive wooden ships food could, if needed, be imported. Provision for the "seven lean years" by storing the abundance of the seven fat years was long held up as the highest example of statesmanship and the ambitions of the Roman populace did not go beyond bread and circuses, the former the product of a plant and the latter involving essentially contests of men and other animals. Through all those centuries of want, misery, and warfare it was, for example, an axiom that "an army fights oh its belly." Now an army rides to the battle line in trucks; its members stand up and fight with tons and tons of metal and other minerals. Food supply is assumed, and rightly so, for in this modern world of ours shortage of food is chargeable at once to poor organization or deficiency of transport.
