The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

The use of Alyavdin's equation Y(x,t) = 1-e(-bt) for describing the effect of grinding time on size distribution is discussed. The equation transforms into linear form by expressing it as log-log reciprocal (1 - Y) versus log t. For plotting, specially divided grids are available; Rosin-Rammler or Weibull charts may be used. The data of Herbst and Fuerstenau are especially useful for illustrating the Alyavdin-Weibull chart in two applications: (1) presenting data (which are relatively unaffected by experimental scatter) and comparing them with theoretical predictions, and (2) as a test for the zero-order kinetics production hypothesis. The chart based on the Alyavdin-Weibull equation is suggested as a useful aid in the analysis of kinetic data (/ versus f), though not as a procedure in its own right. Proposed applications are (1) displaying data with excellent clarity, since it avoids the kind of congestion inherent in some other plotting methods, and (2) as a test for assumed kinetic relationships. Sometimes, equation 1 describes the data quite closely, and in these cases the parameter values appear to be related to certain operating conditions.

The main, though rarely mentioned advantage, is likely to be the standardisation of best practice and product. In a batch process conditions vary cyclically, but with a continuous process they would, at least ideally, remain the same for long periods of time. The other main advantages of continuous over batch processes are likely to be reduced operating and capital costs, the improved possibilities for automatic control, and more consistent product quality. Recent developments are surveyed for ironmaking and steelmaking with reference to blast furnaces; solid-product and molten-product direct reduction; the trough-type processes of Thring, Worner, the Japanese National Research Institute for Metals and Glinkov; basic-oxygen furnace (LD) variants; spray steelmaking; continuous casting and vacuum degassing; rolling; and coating. Encouragement in the devleopment of continuous processes may be drawn from the way unexpected difficulties, such as trouble with sulphur and refractories, were tackled and overcome to achieve the float glass process

The conductivity of a solution is often used industrially to control the salt concentrations of reacting systems, normally using electrodes made of glass fitted with platinised platinum electrodes. When a standard platinum conductivity electrode was used to control the acid fed to the leaching circuit for an ilmenite flotation concentrate at Titania, Norway, a deposit of calcium sulphate (containing some calcium phosphate) covered both the platinum electrode and the external glass fitting, rendering the electrode inefficient in the course of a few minutes. A new electrode consisting of a casing, two measuring tubes and an electrode stem is described and illustrated. A significant advantage of its design is that the useful range of conductivity measurement can be adjusted by adjusting the concentration of the electrolyte in the electrode. It has been in use at Titania for about four years with an electrolyte consisting of 0-1 n HCI. It is robust and demands little maintenance.

In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst's bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). "The developments of the 1950s and 1960s have seen Canada become an international source of iron ore, trading in all geographical areas and hemispheres. Canada's production will significantly increase in the next decade. However, although the outlook is bright, iron ore producers cannot be complacent. Instead, we must weigh the factors that have brought about the development of the Canadian iron ore industry and examine the probable changes for the next decade that will affect its growth.Looking ahead in the 1970s, competition will be severe. Pressure on prices will continue as new sources of supply bid for long-term contracts and as steel producers continue to develop mines around the world. Rising costs will make these pressures more severe. We must balance the growth of the world's steel makers with the emergence of new supplies of iron ore. The iron ore industry is now part of a new era in which demand and supply are intermeshed, and the developments around the world are acting on the Canadian iron ore industry's future."

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

The adsorption mechanism of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) on mercury in potassium fluoride solutions at natural, near neutral pH was investigated. Difler-ential capacity combined with electrocapillary measurements on a dropping mercury electrode were found to provide a sensitive and reliable approach. A shift in the electro capillary maximum (or the point-of-zero-charge) towards positive polarization of the surface due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion for mercury surfaces. The amine was shown to adsorb competitively with potassium ion on mercury. Through correlation of the adsorption density of the amine, calculated from the thermodynamic analyses of the electrocapillary curves, and of the diflerential capacity curves, the adsorbed state and the orientation of the amine at the interface were considered. The similarities and the differences in the adsorption behavior of the amine on mercury and on such ionic solids as quartz, silver sulfide, and silver iodide were evaluated. With the promise of flotation providing a cheap and large-scale process for the upgrading of low-grade ores and magnetic concentrates, the iron ore industry has made a sustained search over the years for a flotation reagent of general applicability and high selectivity. Having shelves full of commercial reagents already on hand and anticipating more, both the users and the suppliers are in need of an experimental approach sensitive enough to differentiate the individual characteristics in each group of reagents. Therefore, the adsorption behavior of various flotation reagents on mineral surfaces from aqueous solutions has been a subject of much investigation. The current view of adsorption based on the electrical double-layer theory is formulated on the assumption that certain ions in solution act as potential-determining ions. Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

At the turn of the century the keys to industrial success were coal and iron. At that time, Pennsylvania was the ranking mineral producer among the States and close to 90% of the Nations energy output was generated by coal. The growth of this Common-wealth into the greatest industrial State in the nation has been due to the huge resources of easily accessable coal found by the early settlers. It was the development of these deposits that provided the United States with a new source of fuel energy. For nearly a century, the Commonwealth was the chief powerhouse of our nation and the chief source of its industrial blood and bone. In 1928 it was truly said that coal was king in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania that year mined a billion dollars worth of coal. A single train carrying this output would reach more than twice around the world at the latitude of Pennsylvania. Coal formed nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for its four billion dollar iron and steel industry. Coal was the real reason why Pennsylvania although 32nd in size was second and not tenth or fifteenth in wealth, population and industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take-up her heritage as the greatest coal producing State in the union. But the knowledge that coal was present was not slow in accumulating. In fact the Indians were aware of its existence long before the white man arrived. They knew that many of the hills were underlain with black stones that would burn. It is reasonably certain that Arnold Viele, the first white man to cross the mountain in this State saw coal in them in 1692. But awareness was not enough. The population in these days was confined to southeastern corner of the State and the population at this time had little need or interest in the resources further inland. Pennsylvania anthracite was discovered in 1762 but was first regarded only as a curiosity. Commercial productions started in 1820. This stimulated the development of many native industries and extensive canal system and afterwards an elaborate net-work of railroads were constructed at great costs to bring the products of the hard

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. Prospecting in its modern context means simply the gathering of information on which, to base plans for the utilization of our mineral resources. One prospecting system familiar to T. V. viewers is the pan of the old gold prospector which, while he prospected, could produce the wealth which financed him in his search. Present day geophysical "prospecting" systems, which are based on the real or supposed responses of an ore specimen, to various stimuli finder controlled laboratory conditions, are promoted as means of reducing the cost of prospecting. The universal drawback to all geophysical systems is that they yield "soft" data which are only presumed to be analogous to ore mineralization until they can be calibrated, by conventional prospecting systems, to each actual mineral environment being tested. By this time the system usually is no longer cheap. Since the raw data are too esoteric to be used until interpreted by geophysicists, usually in the light of their own personal theories and experience, the certainty of multiple interpretation is introduced. The concept of prospecting, at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Viburnum, Fletcher and Brushy Creek mines in the new Missouri Lead Belt, encompasses surface diamond drilling for preliminary exploration, the sub¬sequent development of ore body tonnages and grades and the establishment of mining parameters. The predominantly flat-lying mineralized formation is mined by room and pillar stoping. In an operating mine, jackhammer holer are drilled in backs and bottoms of stopes, and chip samples are taken for assay, concurrent with mining. Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in arid areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.

In many engineering structures, the mechanical properties of large volumes of rock must be considered. Typically, such properties are assumed to be the same as those of small laboratory samples, although it is clear that the laboratory samples do not contain the joints, faults, and other natural planes of weakness of the rock mass. A cheap, convenient testing procedure is needed with which the engineer can more accurately assess the strength and elastic properties of natural jointed rock. As a first step in this direction, a test has been developed capable of determining mechanical properties of large samples in their natural undisturbed state. In the present paper, some preliminary experiments on relatively unjointed material are described. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the deformation modulus of rock masses with varying degrees of success. Rocha (1), Grimm (2), and Alexander (3) have placed flat jacks in a slot in the rock and measured the pressure required to deform the slot. Bonnechere (4) has grouted large flat jacks in granite masses and performed similar experiments using a variety of strain measuring techniques. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has conducted radial jacking tests in which a uniform radial stress is applied to the inside of a tunnel of circular cross section and radial deformation is measured by extensometers located at various depths in the tunnel fall. Plate jack tests (Rocha (5), Shannon and Wilson (6)), pressure chamber tests, and cable jacking tests (Zienkiewicz and Stagg (7)) have all been used to determine in-situ deformation modulus. Several bore hole techniques have also been used to measure rock deformation. These include bore hole jacks (Goodman (8)), bore hole dilatometers using expandable membranes (Menard (9)) and bore hole penetrometers. Most of the above tests except the radial jacking test have an unknown stress distribution and require considerable approximation to calculate a deformation modulus. These approximations include the use of elastic theory for solutions of rigid plates, thick-walled cylinders, etc., and determination of values for Poissons

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. This study is primarily directed toward providing an understanding of the economic complexities associated with subsidence damage on the surface resulting from underground mining. Some of the pertinent theories on the physical stresses involved are reviewed, and both remedial measures and relevant laws in various countries are discussed. Part I (Chapters 1-3) is an historical overview of various aspects of subsidence problems (theoretical, remedial, and legal) during pre-World War I, between World Wars, and post-World War II, respectively. Part II (Chapters 4-9) presents a comprehensive analysis of the economic aspects of subsidence in relation to the following mining alternatives: (a) carrying out the lowest cost mining method without regard for any surface subsidence, (b) special mining techniques, (c) partial mining, (d) full recovery with stowing, and (e) sterilization or leaving the mineral unmined beneath selected areas. These alternatives are evaluated in terms of their measurable expenses.
