There are two distinct coal fields in Kentucky-the Eastern field constituting a part of the Appalachian coal region and the Western field constituting the southern part of the Eastern Interior region. The outcrop pattern of the State is dominated by the Cincinnati arch. Coal-bearing Pennsylvanian strata occupy a low structural position on either flank, preserved thereby from erosion, which in the past has removed these same beds, though a much thinner succession, from the crest of the arch. General geological relationships are shown in figures 1 and 2. On April 13, 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker discovered the first coal recorded in Kentucky. He entered the State through Cumberland Gap (Cave Gap) and found coal a few miles north.

Remote operation of continuous miners has enhanced the health and safety of underground miners in many respects; however, numerous fatal and non-fatal continuous miner struck-by accidents have occurred when using remote controls. In an effort to prevent these injuries, NIOSH researchers at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory examined the workplace relationships between continuous miner operators and various tramming modes of the equipment using motion captured data, predicted operator response times, and field- of- view data to determine causes of operator-machine struck-by events in a virtual mine environment. Factors studied included machine speed, direction of escape, operator facing orientation relative to the machine, work posture, distance from machine, and operator anthropometry. Close proximity to the machine, high machine tramming speeds, a right-facing orientation and operator positioning near the tail all resulted in high risk of being struck. It is hoped that this data will provide an improved rationale for operator positioning for remotely operated continuous miners.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for about 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In some recent years, the number of ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, last year?s Crandall Canyon twin mine disasters, in which 9 miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990?s these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents in the past 5 years. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery. Safer mining technologies have reduced the number of fatal incidents, but some recent failures have underlined the need for careful management of the retreat mining process. On the other hand, more than 400 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports, and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities. Available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting, and inside control roof bolters could dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety. As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

Since its inception in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has been the principal Federal agency involved in ore reserve estimations, using such traditional methods as polygons of influence and variations of inverse distance weighting While adequate for estimating the average are grades in a mining block or section, these methods do mot, however, provide a consistent way of quantifying the reliability of the estimates. This report describes a technique for enhancing ore reserve estimations using geostatistics, the methodology of which combines the spatial and random aspects of geologic phenomena into a formal theoretical framework for deriving the estimation variance of ore reserves. Correctly used, geostatistics enables confidence intervals to be placed around ore reserve estimates calculated from drill hole data. A geostatistical software system was obtained -From the U.S. Geological Survey and installed, aster slight modifications, on the Bureau's Wang computer. System testing and validation was conducted using a simple cast-book-type example. This was then followed by variogram analysis, point kriging and block kriging of data from a previously worked section of a uranium mine.

The world class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Tom Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a Black Pyritic Shale lithology that reacts with Ammonium Nitrate based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material.

This paper utilises 3-D finite-element modeling to study the static and dynamic lateral harmonic response of inclined piles, in a homogenous and a non-homogenous soil, modeled as a linear hysteretic medium. The results of a comprehensive parameter study are presented in the form of dimensionless plots of: (a) static and dynamic swaying and rocking stiffnesses and damping ratios, and (b) distribution of internal forces (bending moment, shear and axial force) with depth. These plots can be readily utilised in practical applications and they offer insight on the role of the inclination in the response of flexible piles.

Kennecott Energy's Colowyo Coal Mine is the largest open pit coal mine in Colorado and produces 5.5 MM tons per year. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven seams of rolling coal ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Draglines are used to strip overburden ranging from 60 to 120 feet thick off two coal seams. These two seams are characterized by soft and fold fractured coal and in past practice cast blasting caused excessive coal damage. As a result, to ensure minimal coal damage and high coal recoveries, the overburden was excavated in two passes. The first pass removed the upper overburden to within 10 to 20 feet of the coal seam. The second pass removed the remaining overburden above the coal. Two-pass mining was effective in controlling coal damage, but also carried significant additional costs.

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

The Nena high sulphidation-type copper-gold deposit is composed of andesitic pyroclastic units with minor interstratified lava flows. Epiclastic sandstone and conglomerate, and siliciclastic rocks consisting of mudstone, shale, lithic and bioclastic sandstone and conglomerate are locally present. Pre-mineral diorite intruded and domed the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Economic copper-gold is hosted by vuggy quartz altered lapilli tuff and tuff breccia. The early hydrothermal alteration stage involved deposition of epithermal banded quartz and chalcedonic silica in localised environments. This alteration stage was locally superimposed by a hydrothermal breccia event. Following the breccia event, magmatically-derived volatiles were channelled through a NW striking dilational fault zone and generated the high sulphidation alteration. The high sulphidation alteration is zoned from a vuggy quartz core with local massive replacement silica through a broad pyritic quartz-alunite halo and finally to a thin illite-smectite zone. This is surrounded by regional chlorite-epidote-smectite alteration. A gangue mineral phase consisting of quartz, alunite and baryte overprinted the zoned high sulphidation alteration and preceded the main copper-gold-arsenic mineralisation. Early sulphide deposition is characterised by marcasite, arsenical pyrite and melnicovenite. Main-stage copper-gold mineralisation involved sequential deposition of hypogene bladed covellite+chalcocite, enargite-luzonite and luzonite+stibioluzonite respectively. The copper sulphides are zoned from bladed covellite-chalcocite in the north (cross-sections 5000 - 5600 N) through enargite-luzonite (cross-sections 4700 - 5000 N) and to luzonite????stibioluzonite in the south (cross-sections 4400 - 4700 N). A late phase of minor acicular covellite and enargite+luzonite overprinted the zoned copper sulphides and associated gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation commenced at the transition from enargite to luzonite, and continued through the deposition of luzonite-stibioluzonite in both stages. Most gold was deposited during the main-stage mineralisation. Yellow native sulphur was deposited in the remaining vugs and defines the waning stage of the hydrothermal system. Post-mineral dioritic intrusives and feldspar porphyries intruded the volcano-siliciclastic sequence. Finally, supergene chemical processes with associated erosion and uplift generated a 40 - 50 m thick oxide-hosted gold cap. The oxide gold cap is underlain by a 35 - 45 m thick blanket of supergene chalcocite+covellite mineralisation which overlies and occurs throughout the main hypogene copper-gold zone. Supergene gold is related to the distribution of primary gold-bearing sulphides. Therefore, remobilisation and redeposition of gold are considered to be insignificant and very localised.

In this research, dynamic and static load tests were performed on permanent foundation piles which had a pile length of 30 m, 800 mm in outer diameter and 15 mm in wall thickness. In this site the dynamic horizontal load test on a smaller test pile, 12 m in length, 500 mm in outer diameter and 12 mm in wall thickness, was also carried out. The static horizontal load versus horizontal displacement derived from the dynamic load test conformed well to that measured in the conventional static horizontal load test of the pile with 800 mm diameter. Then an attempt was made to predict the horizontal load displacement of the pile with 800 mm diameter based on the results of the dynamic horizontal load test of the pile with smaller diameter of 500 mm.

The figures and tables referred to herein are presented in the Proceedings; Volume I, Pages 309 through 316. The 61-story One Liberty Place, at 315 m., is the tallest building 1n Philadelphia and was in 1987 the ninth tallest building in the world. One Liberty Place is supported on drilled piers socketed in heterogeneous metamorphic rock. Design load distribution was 40% on the base and 60% by shaft resistance. Drilled Pier G-10 supporting a T13-A type outrigger column was instrumented. There 1s no uplift load on the exterior outrigger columns. This column supports a 53,850 kN compressive load which includes a 13,440 kN windload. Table 4 presents experimental parameters from straight line interpolation of Mohr failure envelopes for the Wissahickon schist. Lowest values of cohesion (12,200 kN/m2) and angle of internal friction (19°) are at a 50° - 59° angle of foliation. Figure 3 presents a typical pier supported by shaft resistance 1n decomposed (D) and coreable (C) rock and by end bearing (B).

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

"Gulf Minerals (Canada) Limited' s Rabbit Lake Uranium Operation is located in the northern portion of Saskatchewan, 198 miles southeast of Uranium City and 134 miles northwest of Lynn Lake Manitoba.This paper describes flow sheet changes to solve operating problems and briefly describes future changes to accommodate the new ""B"" Zone ore.The Rabbit Lake mill was designed to process 1600 dry tons per day of uranium ore, with an average grade of 0.370 percent u3o8. In 1981, the mill processed 2040 tons per day at a grade of 0.231 percent u3o8 . The process modifications and flow sheet changes that allowed this increase in tonnage will be discussed in relative chronological order. Mill feed was introduced on June 10, 1975, the original equipment consisted of an Ingersoll Rand hydraulic breaker mounted over a 24"" square grizzly. The - 24"" ore was fed to a 2011 X 6"" seflli autogenous grate discharge mill close circuited with 20"" cyclones, the mill discharge was screened on a tyler double deck screen with the undersize (8 rnesh) reporting to the cyclones, the screen oversize was returned by conveyor belt to the mill feed chute.The cyclone overflow (28 mesh) was thickened in a 100' diameter thickener to obtain 55 percent solids for the leach circuit.The leach circuit consisted of two slurry holding tanks and five leach tanks."

Mine inspection in Alaska by the Federal mine inspector was somewhat handicapped during 1915,the inspector having to spend a large part of the summer and fall in examining the Matanuska coal field in connection with the designation of the Government reservations and the leasing units in that field. However, in addition to>this work, the mines in southeastern and southwestern Alaska were inspected by both Federal and Territorial inspectors, a considerable number of men near the Federal inspector's officeat Juneau were trained in first aid to the injured and in the use of mine rescue apparatus, the mines of the interior and of Seward Peninsula were inspected by the Territorial inspector, and a suit was brought in the name of the Territorial inspector for the nonreporting of serious accidents under the Territorial inspection law. The work of the Federal inspector was handicapped also by a lack of field assistants. This condition is likely to be serious, as preparations have been made for opening the Matanuska, Bering River, and Nenana coal fields, and a number of permits granting the free use of 10-acre tracts in other fields throughout the Territory have been issued. The need of a comprehensive inspection law and experienced engineers to safeguard the opening of coal mines by operators who are not familiar with coal mining and are using inexperienced help is obvious.

The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.
