The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between the pipe discharge and the face, n subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided some basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that the data are of doubtful application to mine installations, owing to differences in air-flow conditions.]

Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

Nowadays, great interests are rising on aluminum alloys for the applications at elevated temperature, driven by the automotive and aerospace industries requiring high strength, light weight and low cost engineering materials. As one of the most promising candidates, Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys is found to possess considerably high mechanical properties and creep resistance at elevated temperature resulted from the precipitation of a large number of thermally stable dispersoids during heat treatment. In present work, the effect of Fe contents on the evolution of microstructure as well as high temperature properties of Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloys has been investigated. Results show that the dominant intermetallic changes from a-Al(MnFe)Si at 0.1 wt.% Fe to Al6(MnFe) at both 0.3 wt. % and 0.6 wt. % Fe. In the Fe range of 0.1 to 0.6 wt.% studied, a significant improvement on mechanical properties at elevated temperature has been observed due to the precipitation of dispersoids, and the best combination of compression strength and creep resistance at 300°C is obtained in the alloy with an intermediate Fe content (0.3 wt.%) with finest size and highest volume fraction of a-Al(MnFe)Si dispersoids. The superior properties obtained at 300°C makes 3004 alloys more promising for high temperature applications. The relationship between the Fe content and the precipitation of stable dispersoids as well as the materials properties has been discussed.

This paper, one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in mining, crushing, and grinding materials for cement manufacture, deals particularly with the methods used at the Security plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of, total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

The Bureau of Mines devised and demonstrated a portable linear cutting tester that directly measures and records the in situ cutting forces required of continuous-mining machine picks to it coal in underground mines. It requires only two operators to transport and operate the tester, which can be assembled and operated through a complete test cycle within a single mine work shift. This report reviews the factors considered in the design and development of the tester and the results of its system verification testing at coal mine sites.

Preliminary results of an explosive fracturing-solvent injection heavy oil recovery experiment conducted by the Bureau of Mines at a shallow oil reservoir near Bartlett, Kans., are given. Three wells 35 to 50 feet apart were drilled to a depth of 360 feet, and an open hole interval from 300 to 350 feet in the Bartlesville Sandstone Formation was explosively fractured with 3,000 pounds of pelletized TNT in each well. Laboratory tests were made on cores obtained from these wells to confirm the suitability of using an aromatic-type solvent. Injection of a 74-percent aromatic solvent was begun into one well and continued intermittently for approximately 2 months. Crude oil production amounted to 29.6 bbl, or 11.7 percent of the total oil con¬tained within the three-well interwell zone.

The Chairman declared the meeting open and extended a welcome to all visitors including Mr R. C. J. Goode, President of the Institute. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS GENERAL MEETING The Minutes of the General Meeting held on the 26th June, 1969, were read and adopted. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman presented a report outlining the activities of the Branch during the past year. Membership of the local Branch had increased from 80 to 99 during the year. DECLARATIONOF OFFICEBEARERS The Chairman announced that owing to his transfer out of the Witbank area, he was unable to accept the nomination as Chairman for a further year of office. The outgoing committee had elected Mr J. Meintjes Chairman and Mr A. Bain Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. Meintjes then took the chair. Mr J. Meintjes thanked Mr C. G. Sowry for his successful steering of the Branch during its period of inauguration. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Chairman then read the Scrutineers' Report and declared the following eight members elected as Committee Members for the 1969-1970 year: Messrs I. Botha, A. W. Brereton, G. E. Carlyon, B. T. Hosking, E. J. Jackson, B. D. McNeice, P. J. Muller, B. F. van der Merwe. TALK The Chairman then called upon Mr A. Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. In the chloride process to manufacture TiO2 pigment, feedstocks containing higher TiO2 contents (high-grade ores or HGOs) are favoured in order to minimise production of undesirable by-products. Most of today’s HGOs are produced through the smelting or reduction and leaching of ilmenite, processes which consume significant energy and/or produce large volumes of non-titanium materials that may have to be landfilled. In order to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of its TiO2 business, the DuPont Company, working with Kobe Steel Ltd, has developed an innovative process called TiRON for making HGO. Using a rotary hearth furnace, the process reduces ilmenite to a high TiO2 slag and metallic iron granules. The TiO2 slag is suitable for TiO2 pigment manufacture, and the iron is suitable for steel making. TiRON can process sand or rock ilmenite of varying compositions and particle sizes. Fossil fuel instead of electricity supplies the energy for the reduction. Dusts and off-spec materials are recycled. These process attributes, together with capital requirements estimated to be significantly lower, give TiRON substantial economic, environmental, and process flexibility advantages over conventional ilmenite upgrading processes. TiRON has been demonstrated at the semi-works scale, and preparations are being made to bring it to the pilot scale.

"The delivered price of any mineral is the determining factor in converting untapped resources into economic resources. Transporting the minerals from the mine to the market plays a significant part in the total package. The expansion of the Western minerals industry in the last ten years has been paralleled by improved transportation systems to reduce cost, increase accessibility of resources and get the minerals to market in the shortest time possible. A review is made of developments, such as unit trains, complex multi-modal systems and containerized transport, over the last ten years, with specific movement outlined. The total transportation package of land transport, port and terminal facilities, and water transport, where needed, is stressed. As the volume of minerals movement expands, increasingly sophisticated and integrated transportation systems will have to be utilized. The development of solids pipelines and other possibilities is outlined."

Adaptive management can be described as a structured, iterative process of robust decision making in the face of uncertainty, with a goal of reducing uncertainty over time through system monitoring. Adaptive management is a tool which can be applied to not only change a system, but learn about the system (Holling, 1978). Adaptive management has been used in ecosystem management for years and guidance is provided in a variety of handbooks and publications. Adaptive management can be applied to industrial facilities and mines through the use of an adaptive environmental management plan (AEMP) and associated practices. The goal of this paper is to provide an explanation of how the plans and practices support regulatory agency approvals and permitting, span the life-cycle of mines, manage uncertainty, and assist in addressing mining impact and legacy issues. AEMPs and associated practices are useful tools to address the uncertainties in identifying, evaluating, and managing impacts of proposed new and modified mining facilities undergoing environmental review. Once a proposed project is approved, the AEMP continues as a living document, being informed, revised, and adapted by the operations. The AEMP can serve as an ongoing management tool for describing and evaluating environmental impacts, continuing in operations into post reclamation. If initiated during planning and environmental review of a project (and in some locations such as the United States [U.S.], the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)), the AEMP becomes a basis to identify, monitor, and manage potential project environmental impacts. Development of an AEMP for an operating mine is also beneficial since there are generally developing and ongoing environmental issues at those facilities as well. Over time, the AEMP is adapted to changing requirements and conditions including those anticipated and unanticipated. Ever increasing scrutiny of mining projects and the complexities of the EIS process highlight the uncertainties inherent in impact predictions. In making the momentous decision of initial project approval, these uncertainties can discourage the regulatory agencies? actions and create stakeholder anxiety and controversy about a project. A well-designed AEMP can support the decision to approve an EIS and enable a project to move forward. Additionally, an AEMP can inform financial assurance estimates and revisions over the life of a mine providing all parties including the citizens of the surrounding communities with greater confidence that potential environmental impacts and risks will be well managed.

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

Gentlemen: I'm glad to see the crowd that's here this morning, glad to renew acquaintances with many old friends, and if you'll look at the program you'll see a heading there which states that as President I have the honor and pleasure to be here to address the membership of this meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, this being the 49th regular meeting. The tentative schedule of this gathering lists on the program the "President's Address," and I want to assure you that this will not be an address or a lengthy speech. It's said that a good speaker is one who arises to the occasion and then promptly sits clown, so please be at ease for I intend to sit clown very soon. There are other men here who have spent time writing and preparing papers on subjects that are to come up for discussion at this meeting, which will be, I'm sure, more interesting than what I have to say this morning; so again I'll say, we'll get this part of the program under way promptly.

"Steel wire mesh is the accepted standard for roof and rib skin control at most coal mines in the United States. Wire mesh is delivered to the mine in bundles that are heavy and awkward to handle. The large size, stiffness, and weight of the wire mesh can present a safety hazard in transporting underground and storing on the roof bolter. Installing wire mesh on the roof and ribs with the roof bolter can be a challenge as well.Synthetic mesh is lighter than wire mesh and can be folded and rolled into a safe, manageable size. A single synthetic mesh roll large enough to cover the roof and ribs in a deep cut can be safely handled by two men. The roof bolter is designed to carry and dispense the roll as it advances and installs primary roof support, resulting in a single pass roof and rib ground control solution. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the roof bolter synthetic mesh handling system developed by J. H. Fletcher & Co., Huesker, Inc., and Oxbow Mining.INTRODUCTIONRoof and rib skin control in some coal mines has been an issue since mining first began. Roof and rib skin problems vary from mine to mine. The type of roof rock material exposed after mining; the mine atmosphere; and stresses from depth of cover, over mining, and/or undermining are some of the variables that can contribute to roof skin problems from mine to mine.Potential roof and rib skin problems can be time dependent as well. Some mines have roof skin rock, sometimes called draw rock, that falls when drilling the hole for the roof bolt as the initial roof support is installed. Some roof skins are more stable but can fail over time. The failure of roof skin can even be between properly installed roof bolts with roof plates (Figure 1).Mines have most commonly used a wire mesh that comes in individual panels anywhere from 5 ft x 5 ft (1.5 m x 1.5 m) all the way up to 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) in size. They are typically constructed of 8- or 9-gauge wire welded on a 4 in (102 mm) square pattern. A 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) panel weighs approximately 35 lbs (16 kg). These steel wire mesh panels can make it a difficult and sometimes dangerous task to deliver them from the surface to the roof bolter and then store on the machine. Manipulating the mesh panels from the storage area on the machine to the final installation position on the roof or rib can also be a daunting task (Figure 2)."

This publication by the Federal Bureau of Mines contains the free-swelling indexes for 2,812 samples of coal received from January 26, 1948, to July 15, 1957, and the Hardgrove grindability indexes for 2,339 samples of coal received from June 23, 1947, to July 15, 1957. These data consist of the origin of the sample, bed name, and analysis. Summaries show the high, low, and average values for each bed. The free-swelling index is a relative measure of the caking properties of a coal when burned on a grate, and the Hardgrove grindability index is used to estimate the relative ease of grinding coals. Development and standardization of these test procedures were at a much later date than those for the more familiar tests, such as proximate and ultimate analyses and calorific value determinations. The newer tests are valuable in supplying supplemental information, particularly for assisting in evaluating coals used in certain types of combustion processes.4/ Data from such tests are important to designers of burning equipment, operating engineers, and purchasing agents. Data from these newer tests are scarce and scattered through a number of publications. Special projects were started to determine the free-swelling and grindability indexes, in addition to the regular analyses on the tipple samples collected by Bureau engineers. Since the start of these special projects, all the coal fields of commercial importance have been adequately covered in the sampling program.
