Large quantities of gasoline are lost each year by evaporation from bulk-storage station tanks. The rate of evaporation from bulk-station tanks is influenced by two principal factors: First, the vapor pressure of the gasoline in the tank; and second, the amount of "breathing" of the tank. The vapor pressures of the gasoline govern the amount of the gasoline vapor in the air-vapor mixture above the gasoline in a tank at a given temperature. This is one of the principal factors in determining the total pressure of the air-vapor mixture within the tank. The "breathing" of the tank is caused by the inflow of air from the atmosphere during certain periods of the day and the expulsion of the air-vapor mixtures at other times, caused by atmospheric variations. The pressure built up within a tank and the amount of gasoline in the air-vapor mixture are both a direct function of the temperature existing within the tank. Therefore, two of the most common methods for reducing evaporation losses from bulk-station tanks are: (1) The use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with relief valves and operated at 1 or 2 ounces of pressure and about 1/2-ounce vacuum; (2) reducing the temperature of tanks and their contents by painting them a light color, by insulation, and in some instances by using water sprays. Water sprays, although effective, usually are too expensive to operate economically. In order to determine and compare the effects of various colors, insulation, and pressure in reducing the evaporation losses of gasoline held in storage in bulk-storage tanks, the Bureau of Mines made observations from May 29 to October 15. 1930, on five horizontal tanks of 12,000-gallon capacity each, which were erected at the plant of Black. Sivalls and Bryson Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo. This report gives in detail the results of these evaporation tests.

This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. Terrestrial heat flow has been determined for four boreholes in the Montreal area. The mean value of the results (uncorrected for glacial effects) is 0.790 ± 0.053 x 10-6 cal/ cm2/sec (95 per cent confidence limits). Thermal gradients were determined using a thermistor probe and d-c bridge, and also by a new method using a probe-contained phase-shift oscillator, the output frequency of the oscillator being a function of probe temperature. Thermal conductivity determinations were made on core from the boreholes, using a divided bar apparatus. INTRODUCTION T HIS paper concerns the terrestrial heat flow in the St. Lawrence lowland of Quebec, as determined from measurements on four of the numerous boreholes drilled in this region for gas and oil. We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.

The flow in a hydrocyclone classifier is highly turbulent complex nature of multi-phase structure, which has led designers to rely on empirical mathematical models for predicting the performance. A number of classifying cyclone models have been developed and successfully used in mineral comminution circuit simulators over the past four decades (Plitt, 1976 and Nageswararao, 1978). However, most of the mathematical models currently available to describe hydrocyclone classifier performance are based on single average mineral density component behavior. In industrial comminution circuits, the feed to the cyclone composed of a mixture of particles of varying degrees of liberation and sizes. The behavior of multi-component particles in a hydrocyclone is poorly understood and unaccounted for in most of the mathematical model equations available in the literature. There is evidence from a number of experimental data sets indicating the significant influence of the multi-component particles on measured cyclone performance. A concept for modeling the performance of hydrocyclones based on multi-component behavior is proposed in this paper. A set of semi-empirical model equations for cut-size, sharpness of separation are presented and the corresponding model parameters evaluated from the measured data are given.

Six new IsaMills were installed for the George Fisher flowsheet in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to produce a product P80 as fine as seven microns. The objective was better liberation of galena and sphalerite. The IsaMill commissioning was completed by the end of 1999. The six new IsaMills were running to the metallurgical specifications almost immediately after start-up. This paper reports the performance of the George Fisher IsaMills in the zinc circuits and some of the latest development in the IsaMill designs and maintenance during George Fisher commissioning.

The surface roughness of unfilled rock discontinuities has a major influence on the deformational and hydraulic behaviour of discontinuous rock masses. Although it is widely recognized that surface roughness is comprised of a large-scale (waviness) and small-scale (unevenness) components, most investigations of surface roughness have been restricted to small fracture surfaces (< 1m2). Hence, the influences of the large-scale components of roughness are often neglected. Furthermore, these investigations typically focus on analyzing roughness in terms of two-dimensional profiles rather than the complete three-dimensional geometry, which can lead to potentially biased estimates of roughness. This contribution demonstrates the use of a new optical digital measurement system, based on the principle of triangulation, to digitize a large-scale natural rock discontinuity surface at both outcrop-scale (~6m x 2m) and lab-scale (~100mm x 100mm). Subsequently, the digitized surfaces are systematically analyzed using the three-dimensional roughness methodology proposed by Grasselli to investigate the dependency of roughness on sample window size and measurement resolution.

In 2018, the German Federal government decided to phase-out the energy production using coal-fired power plants and to terminate lignite mining completely by 2038 at the latest. This decision will impact approximately 60,000 jobs. It will have an enormous impact on the socioeconomic development especially in all German lignite mining regions. To avoid economic and political friction, it is of utmost importance to achieve a sustainable transition towards a post-mining era and to offer residents in the mining districts perspectives for a good future that include adequate job opportunities. In this context, the German government is providing massive structural aids early on. As previous closure experiences from the German hard coal mining industry have shown, it takes at least a generation to overcome the effects of a strategic closing decision of this magnitude. Therefore, the planned closure process appears to be a long time at first glance. In fact, however, it is not.

Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool which has been used to evaluate mineral separation circuits during the preliminary design phase. Traditionally, the LCA methodology uses the analytic circuit solution to determine the relative slope of the circuit?s partition curve. This value is then used as an indicative performance measure suitable for the comparison and ranking of alternative circuit configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. In most mineral systems, this material represents a small portion of the initial feed (due to liberation) as well as a small portion of the revenue potential (due to the incremental value). Respecting these limitations, the authors have developed new separation performance indicators which may be derived from the analytical circuit solution and used in LCA problems. These indicators inherently reflect the separation potential of pure material, providing a better indication of lost revenue due to misplaced material. The complete methodology has been integrated with prior software to produce the Heuristic Optimizer for Resource Separation Economics (HORSE).

Crown ethers are gaining importance in separation technology specifically for rare earth elements (REE, La to Lu plus Y) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir) due to their specific binding ability, metal complex stability and high extraction efficiency. The selectivity of crown ethers in extraction of these metals depends on different factors, including the cavity diameter and nature of a donor atom of the crown ether, size and charge of the metal ion, diluents and counter ion. Demand for strategic REE and precious metals are consistently increasing in the world while the separation of these metals is most challenging tasks. In this paper, the use of crown ethers in separation of REE and precious metals, reaction mechanisms and simplified process flowsheets will be elucidated. New reagents with high selectivity for the separation of these metals are further expected to produce high purity metals.

This study focused on determining the stability of thin shotcrete fill fences at a hard rock mine in northwestern Ontario during increased pour rates of paste backfill. Determination of the stability of the fence is needed for both personnel safety and to avoid failure of a fence. Failure of a fill fence during backfill activities would have severe impacts on production and potential hazards to nearby workers. Approved fill fences at the mine are a slender design of 10.5 centimeters of shotcrete applied to a rebar framework with burlap lined ?bedspring? backing. Approved mine standards dictate that fill rates may not exceed 1.5 meters of paste depth per 10-hour shift when pouring behind a flat fill fence. To decrease the backfill cycle time the study looked at fence stability during increased pour rates of 2.5 meters paste depth poured within a 10-hour shift. An instrumentation design was developed including pressure cells, strain gauges, and tilt-meters that were built into experimental fences to observe the effects of increased pour rates on lateral wall pressures, strain development in the rebar and shotcrete reinforcement, and physical deformation patterns along the face of the fence. The data was analyzed for overall stability.

This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller:5 Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer&apos;s deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone.

These reagents are those with a molecular structure comprising a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a. highly molar or hydrorhile group in such manner that ionization is nearly complete in dilute solution and the resultant ionic grouping has a very considerable hydrophile-lipophile unbalance in the structure. As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.

"Carbides and nitrides of iron are being considered as magnetic materials for high-density recording due to their chemical stability and high-saturation magnetization values (> 100 emu/g). Iron carbides and iron nitrides with magnetic properties suitable for magnetic media were synthesized by employing a novel synthesis procedure based on fluidization of powders in reactive atmospheres. Fluidized-bed reactors of laboratory, bench, and pilot scale were employed for the synthesis of iron carbide, FeSC2, by reducing and carburizing U-Fe203 in the temperature range of 300 to 550 ºC. A temperature of 400· ºC and a reaction time of 2 to 3 h are found to be optimal for the synthesis of iron carbide. When the carburization was carried out in a reducing and carburizing atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, nucleation and growth of FeSC2 occurred directly from Fe304 with no intermediate phases such as FeO or Fe. Longer carburization times resulted in the deposition of carbon on the surfaces of FeSC2 particles due to Boudouard reaction, and higher temperatures favored the formation of a mixture of carbides such as FesC2 and Fe3C. Iron nitrides were synthesized by reducing u-Fe203 in the temperature range of 350 to 550 ºC, followed by nitriding in the temperature range of 350 to 550·ºC. The powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer.IntroductionRecent demand for high-quality recording of optical, electrical, and audio signals generated interest in magnetic tapes with high-recording densities as compared to the conventional magnetic tapes based on U-Fe203. At present, commercially available magnetic tapes contain maghematite, U-Fe203, as a magnetic material with a saturation magnetization of90 emu/g and a coercive force of 400 Oe. Recording of signals at a higher density per unit volume of magnetic material demands magnetic materials with high-saturation magnetization and a reasonable coercive force. Although metallic iron particles possess a saturation magnetization of 130 to 150 emu/g and a high coercive force of 1000 Oe, the gradual oxidation of iron-to-iron oxides (of lower saturation magnetization) prevents the use of iron particles for high-density recording. In contrast, iron carbides such as FesC2, Fe7C3 and iron nitrides such as Fe4N and Fe3N possess excellent magnetic properties coupled with good electrical conductivities and high hardness. The carbides and nitrides of iron have generated significant interest as magnetic materials for the next generation of magnetic tapes due to their unique magnetic properties and relatively greater oxidation resistance as compared to metallic iron particles [1-4]."

In most mineral enterprises, what is the progress, and shift in responsibilities, as the young engineer advances in the corporation? You are all familiar with the normal pattern-in mine production from level boss, to shift boss, to superintendent to manager; in milling from test engineer, to shift boss, to foreman, to superintendent and then manager; in engineering from surveying on to Chief Engineer; and all then aspire to the corporation presidency. Note the shift-from purely technical jobs, say in the first five to ten years in the profession, to administrative positions for 30 to 40 years. What is the average preparation given to mineral engineering students, who can look forward to about 30 years of administrative work? From the catalogs of 21 institutions, offering 36 curricula of four years length, in mining and/or metallurgy, requiring the equivalent of about 150 to 160 semesterhours for graduation, the following results were obtained: Average number of semester hours of economics, 3 hr. Range of requirements, 0 to 8 hr. Thirteen curricula do not require any economics. Accounting and business law, average: 1 semester hr, 26 curricula do not require business law or accounting.

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.
