Depletion of coals most suitable for metallurgical fuel has made necessary a general survey of coking coal reserves in the United States. These investigations were begunn 1948 at the joint request of the Munitions Board, Department of Defense, and a number of coal companies. This report, which is one in a series, by counties, describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Harlan County, Ky. From these data it is possible to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke, (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced; and (c) Which coals cannot be considered to be potential sources of metallurgical fuel regardless of preparation.

The Cordero mine is located in the Nevada portion of the Opalite Mining district that straddles the Oregon-Nevada state boundary. The mercury deposits of the district occur along the margins of the broad east-west graben valley of McDermitt Creek. The only other major producers, the Opalite and Bretz mines, on the northern margin of the graben have thus far exploited only shallow deposits within 100 feet of the surface. Through December 1965, Cordero has produced 94,680 flasks of mercury, the most of which came from the large underground cinnabar deposit. Nearly all of the mercury ore deposits in this district have been found in Miocene rhyolitic intrusives, flows, tuffs, and lake beds. These rhyolites have been argillically altered at depth and extensively silicified at or near the surface. These silicified areas or "opalite" masses were the original cinnabar-bearing outcrops.

"The mining industry instinctively follows rule-of-thumb design velocities often based on very simplistic theoretical “economic velocity” optimization calculations to determine airway sizes. Although these are important building blocks in ventilation planning it should be recognized that mines are far more complex and various, often opposing factors, are at play. Therefore, it is important that each ventilation situation be analyzed on a case-by-case basis to determine the best-fit solution for an operation. The ventilation design process should not necessarily be constrained by theoretical optimal economic velocities that become rules-of-thumb. In some cases, this could lead to unrealistic infrastructure requirements and exorbitant capital expenditure. This type of design often lacks corporate support leading to a scenario where no ventilation upgrades are implemented. Economic velocities typically consider the cost of power, development costs and operational risk. These typical rules-of-thumb work reasonably well as a starting off point when considering feasibility of greenfield projects. For established mines that are looking at expansion these rules may not be appropriate due to capital expenditure constraints or geotechnical ground conditions. The theoretical optimum should be reviewed in the case of an established mine where existing infrastructure could perhaps be maximized. For example, the geotechnical risk of large diameter raises at depth may require multiple small diameter raise to maintain the theoretical economic velocity. If a mine has a life of less than 5 years, then the cost of power is an insignificant proportion of the total owning cost. For these mines, operating the ventilation raises at an increased velocity to avoid a complicated and expensive capital upgrade might be the more appropriate option, even though it opposes the traditional rules-of-thumb. Mines which are capital constrained may be better off accepting a higher operating cost for the interim or settle for minor infrastructure upgrades rather than run the risk of the entire ventilation upgrade not being approved at all. This paper explores a number of examples derived from case studies undertaken by the authors for several deep mechanized mining projects in Australasia. The examples explore conditions under which higher than the economic norm would be applicable."

"Several companies targeting Rare Earth Elements (REE) around the world have completed a Preliminary Economic Assessment showing positive project financial results. Although REE ores may contain high REE value, financing these projects remains difficult in part due to the number of processes required to valorize the elements and the relatively low yield of these processes. Direct ore leaching without the production of a concentrate may reduce the capital and some operating expenditures through process simplification, and increase revenues because of REE recovery improvement.A silicate REE ore is used to test various hypotheses regarding whole ore processing and to develop a simplified flowsheet. An atmospheric leach (200 kg/t H2SO4) of crushed whole-ore containing 0,6% REE, followed by impurity removal and REE precipitation recovers 80% of the REEs in a solution containing REE and Th. The high value contained in most REE deposits makes whole-ore approaches worth considering for most projects, given the losses of valuable species typically associated with the production of a REE mineral concentrate from the ore. INTRODUCTIONRare Earth Elements (REE) find applications in modern and clean technologies, whether civil, industrial or military. With China producing more than 90% of the world’s REE, the embargo imposed by this country in early 2010 increased REE prices for a three year period. With prices having shrunk back many-fold from their peak value, projects put forward during the hike are struggling to secure financing. Owing in part to unconventional processes such as acid-baking and solvent extraction, REE plants are high capital cost and high operating-cost units, and present technological risks (Verbaan et al., 2014)."

A high carbon low-grade gold ore, in which gold mainly occurs in carbonaceous matters, is a typical refractory gold ore whose conventional cyanide leaching extraction is only 12.9 %. In this paper, by the process of flotation-roasting-leaching, gold was effectively enriched and extracted. The flotation results showed that the enrichment ratio of gold was relevant to that of carbon, indicating that gold occurred in close association with carbon. A concentrate containing gold 7.26 g/t and carbon 12.37 % was obtained, with gold recovery 83.10 % and carbon recovery 90.24 %. Subsequently, the roasting of flotation concentrate favorably made the removal rates of carbon and sulfur reach 99.81% and 98.79%, respectively. After roasting, the gold in the roasted product was further enriched to 29.70 g/t and the optimal gold cyanide leaching extraction reached 93.66%.

Mining is a major global industry that requires the moving of considerable volumes of earth and rock (overburden) to win the valuable ore prior to mineral extraction and processing. As a result of this process, new landscapes are created, both extracted voids and overburden piles, as well as infrastructure for management of mine operations, wastewater, tailings, other raw materials, transportation and extreme rainfall events. Resource companies must develop and obtain regulatory approval for detailed plans that manage this displaced material through all phases of the life-of-mine and rehabilitate the site at the time of closure (including landform stability, revegetation and ongoing management).Individual mine sites operate in long time frames (ten to 50 years), with several mines often operating in the same region, generating cumulative overburden volumes and heavily altering the original landscape. These impacts are universally framed as a negative consequence of the industry, especially by modern society that values natural (and some agricultural) landscapes as pristine and almost sacred. Overburden and tailings are also seen as a problem, and are a significant business cost to mining practice.This paper looks to investigate perceptions of mining and post-mining landscapes, questioning the aesthetically driven emphasis on the ‘natural’. It proposes instead an opportunity to reframe the way we look at overburden and landscape impacts from mining, exploring the possibility of imagined post-mine landscapes unburdened by traditional aesthetic expectations. These landscapes, to be conceived by regional stakeholder roundtables, have the capacity to be built by regional mining consortia as a foundation for sustainable post-mining economies.Post-mine regeneration offers both the motivation and the basic materials to create an altogether new environment from a blank slate. The treatment process of a low-grade refractory gold ore containing sulfide minerals and carbonaceous matters was studied in this work. The gold extraction of this ore by all-sliming cyanidation was only 11.75%. Hence, a pretreatment was necessary. In this paper, a flotation-preoxidation-cyanide leaching process was developed. The concentrate from the flotation procedure was processed using different preoxidation methods. A concentrate containing 34.08g/t of gold with the gold recovery ratio of 81.20% was obtained by flotation. After roasting, microwave heating or alkaline pressure oxidation, the gold cyanidation ratio reached 82.37%, 81.26% and 71.09% respectively. Roasting was an effective, reliable and mature technique to oxidize sulfide minerals and carbonaceous matters. Roasting and microwave heating both produced dangerous environmental pollutants while alkaline pressure oxidation was eco-friendly.

This bulletin abstracts and reviews essential details of reports on 59 fires in different coal mines in the United States, describes the circumstances of origin and the methods of controlling or extinguishing the fires, and points out the lessons taught. all, the fires caused great damage to property and killed nearly 400 men. The data have been compiled from the records of the Bureau of Mines, which cover most of the major mine accidents in the United States since 1.908. The names of the mines concerned and of the persons connected with the management of those mines have been omitted in accordance with the usual policy of the bureau. The bureau hopes that this bulletin will be of service to all persons interested in lessening the fire hazard at coal mines and to all who may be called on to fight a mine fire.

THE activity and enthusiasm of pioneers still prevail among workers in applied geophysics1.- Within the year, new devices have .been tried out, instruments and technique have been improved and the methods of application to commercial problems have been increased in many ingenious ways. There is still great need for more skillful interpretation of results in terms of geology, but oil the whole geophysical prospecting is making encouraging progress toward finding its proper place and function in engineering and geological practice. Spectacular successes continue to be reported, particularly .from the Gulf Coast, where the race for salt domes has not slackened, and encouraging results have been giined elsewhere in the mapping of structures in the search for oil. In the mining field, however, it can hardly be claimed that the same measure of success has been obtained, for brilliant efforts worthy of wide recognition have been overshadowed to some eatent by the unfortunate outcome of surveys undertaken unwisely without recognition of the limitations of the work. Consequently, hopes were aroused that could not be fulfilled, and it must be admitted in an impartial survey that there are a few regions, chiefly in the far north, where the standing of geophysical prospecting is somewhat doubtful and where the course of public opinion regarding it shows a certain similarity to the history of the market during the past few months. Reliable work, however, is steadily going 011 and it can confidently be expected that the methods will eventually be regarded in many regions as an essential part of the technique of securing geologic data needed for intelligent exploration.

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E. Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics in¬strumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 411 had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft). The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) al¬though it ranges from 73-134 m (240 - 440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by Hemscheidt shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. Recent Federal coal-mine inspections have revealed some good and some definitely hazardous practices and systems for transporting; handling, and storing lubricants in and about coal mines. Improper storage or handling of. lubricants in coal mines has caused disastrous mine fires or, by supporting combustion, has made fires from other sources more difficult to fight. Careless handling of grease and oil around electrical equipment wastes much oil and permits entrance of grit and foreign substances into the working parts, which causes excessive wear and increases the possibility, of electrical ignition.

In this paper it will be my endeavor to trace the development of the marine engine and its appurtenances, and the general progress that has taken place in marine engineering generally during the past fifteen years, rather with the object of attributing much of it to the successful efforts of the makers of iron and steel, thereby rendering my thanks to them for the valuable service they have contributed to my profession, than to recount what has been achieved by the skill, ability and perseverance of my colleagues in shipbuilding and engineering. The engineer has been at all times dependent on the ironmaster, and on more than one occasion his progress has been barred by the inability of the latter to overcome some obstacle to success in his manufacture. But on the other hand, it is equally true that the ironmaster has often been ahead of the engineer, and has been prepared, long beforehand, to supply that which would make a success for the marine engineer if he would avail himself of it.

Copper solubility in SiO2-CaO-FeOx slag equilibrated with copper matte in 10% SO2 atmosphere at 1573K was estimated. Essential parameters are activity coefficients of copper oxide and sulfide, oxygen and sulfur potentials and activity of copper in the slag-matte system. A large number of experiments provide proper parameters to calculate copper solubility in slag, A classical thcrmodynamic model postulating CuO0.5 and CuS0.5 moleculcs assists in estimating copper solubility in slag. Additions of Si02 and CaO reduce copper solubility almost in any condition. Copper loss, that is function copper solubility and slag volume, in the silica saturated SiO2-FeO. binary slag is minimally equilibrated with less than 66% copper matte while copper loss in the 50% FeO.-SiO2-CaO ternary slag saturated with 2CaOSiO2 is minimally equilibrated with over 66% copper matte. This slag composition has potential for continuous copper converting, direct copper production or high-grade matte production.

[For reasons well known to Mining Engineers, fine grinding in the wet form is quite universal inn plants engaged in the traction of metallic values from crude ore In the processing, of non-metallic and industrial minerals, however, fine grinding in dry form is the more common method. The crude materials generally contain less moisture than required for wet grinding, and the products are usually marketed or used in the dry form, most of them as powders. To grind wet would therefore entail the addition of water and the expense for drying the product, which is not justified.
