Detailed oil yield, lithologic, and mineral distribution data are presented for core and drill-cutting samples from the Western Oil Shale Corp. Project Utah EX-1 Corehole (WOSCO EX-I), drilled to sample a deeply buried oil-shale sequence in the Green River Formation of Utah's Uinta Basin. Drilling of this corehole was part of the evaluation of this site for possible oil-shale development by nuclear explosion. Sections sufficiently thick for nuclear development average 15 gallons per ton or less and consist predominantly of low-grade shales. Some properties of low-grade shales may be advantageous to a nuclear experiment by facilitating breakage, fracture development, and in situ retorting. The formation correlates precisely with the well-studied oil shales 25 miles east near the Colorado border. A 235-foot mineralized section containing nahcolite, shortite, and searlesite whose bottom lies 300 feet above the Mahogany zone is described.

Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology's financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. 1. Introductory Some members may recall that at the Annual Meeting two years ago I read a paper, 'The Future of the Mining Industry in Canada." Discussing this large subject it was possible only to outline the facts and inferences leading to ?the conclusion that Canada is a country endowed with enormous mineral wealth, of which the fringes are yet scarcely touched. In the present paper, I wish to examine in somewhat fuller detail the evidence, both direct and inferential, concerning the mineral wealth of the greatest physical and geological feature of Canada-the Precambrian Shield. Many, if not most, of these facts are already familiar to you. But, since they will form the basis of the reasoning employed, they will be recalled for explicit reference. First, let us review very briefly the position and extent of the Shield. The area of the entire Shield is given in textbooks as 2,000,000 square miles, of which perhaps 10 or 12 per cent. is exposed in the south-easterly part of Canada's Arctic islands. The remainder occupies roughly two-thirds of the North-west Territory; the north-east corner of Alberta; one-third of Saskatchewan ;two-thirds of Manitoba; three-fourths of Ontario; and nearly ninety-five per cent. of Quebec.

Introduction That the coal industry has entered a new phase in its development is now evident. Coal, besides being the chief source of heat and power, has become a potential raw material for many industries. Rapid progress has been made in the methods used in the mining and preparation of coal, and in the equipment for the burning of coal. Data of a fundamental nature relating to the composition of coal and to its transformations? during combustion and processing have also been revealed. Research, the key which has opened this new era, has already accomplished much, but it has only begun to show what it may and should be able to do. New developments of coal burning equipment, super-power plants, carbonizing and briquetting plants, hydrogenation and synthetic chemical processes, will undoubtedly have a marked influence in the post-war years on the economic welfare of many coal producing countries. Until comparatively recently, however, there has been in many branches of the coal industry a tendency to regard research as something abstruse and something which had little or no value to those managing such branches. But the fact that coal has suffered as a source of heat and energy through inroads of oil, natural gas, and water power, has made it plain to the industry that, if it is to maintain its present markets in this competitive world, much less increase them, the whole industry must be willing to follow the example of other industries and plan for the future.

Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute, at Spokane, have been sent to members in the Special Circular of May 8, 1909, and for convenience a summary of the additional information is given later in this announcement. In spite of the present small number who have joined the party, final arrangements have been made to complete the itinerary given in the circular. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the special courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. . For those who cannot take the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving the Yellowstone Park. In order to make the necessary arrangements, however, the names of members and guests contemplating this partial trip should be sent at once to Mr. Theodore Dwight, .39 West 39th St., New York, N. Y. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago September 16. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals (luring the entire trip, except while taking the tour through the Yellowstone Park. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. WE got our chance to talk with Arthur J. Blair at the Annual Meeting at the Pennsylvania Hotel. By two o'clock Wednesday afternoon things had quieted down enough so we had our interview in the foyer to the Ball Room. There were the usual questions. Where were you born? In La Salle County, Ill., on March 26, 1885. Where did you go to school? Northwestern University, B.S. degree in 1906. Where did you start work? For E. J. Longyear right after leaving school. One's ability as a geologist was measured by one's ability to wield a brush hook and ax. He stayed on the job as geologist for three years and then got to thinking about the advantages of a warmer climate. The advantages stacked up favorably, so off he went to Birmingham, Ala., just about the time U.S. Steel took over the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co.

The Lomas Bayas copper property is located93 km (58 miles) east of Antofagasta, Region II, Chile (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1880. The deposit produced intermittently until 1992. Production at Lomas Bayas took place in high-grade veins and breccias mined underground. During 1991, Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos SA (EMMB) optioned the property from Compania Doña Ada SA. Doña Ada maintained the right to continue mining the ores by open-pit and block-caving methods and hauling the ore to its plant located60 km (37 miles) to the north. EMMB conducted exploration and column test programs. On May 9, 1994, Compania Minera Gibraltar Ltda.(CMGL) signed a purchase option agreement to acquire the Lomas Bayas property. CMGL conducted 8,612 m(9,490 ft) of reverse-circulation drilling, 2,028 m (6,650ft) of diamond drilling, a series of metallurgical tests and geologic mapping. The company then decided to exercise its purchase option.

At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. This method is especially suitable for operation under severe winter conditions and has reduced the detrimental effects by a far greater extent than other methods of water control, Spring runoff is handled in open sumps, but all other water from four mines, with flows exceeding 16,000 g.p.m., is pumped all year 'round from about thirty-five wells. PRESIDENT SCOTT TURNER officiated as chairman of the opening session on mining methods, Monday morning, Feb. 15. The first paper was that of Max H. Barber on open-pit mining in the Lake Superior district, read by C. F. Jackson. W. L. Taylor stated that liquid-oxygen explosive had been tried but that the operators are satisfied with the explosives used; lb. of dynamite breaks one ton of rock. Although black powder is considered the most effective explosive, the factor of safety has decided in favor of high explosives. Lucien Eaton told of the Michigan Lime and Chemical Co.'s large L. 0. X. plant at Rogers City, Mich. Mr. Turner referred to this plant, also said that the Bureau of Mines is shortly to issue Bulletin 349 completely covering the use of L. 0. X. from its inception. W. D. B. Motter, Jr., gave some items concerning Chuquicamata, Chile. Twelve years ago the blasts moved 850,000 to 1,000,000 tons, but average shots now move 250,000 to 300,000 tons. One pound of L. 0. X. breaks 3.7 tons, against 3.1 tons by dynamite. Another speaker told of some large dynamite blasts in open pits, one of 360,000 Ib. in March, 1931, and another of 430,000 lb. to be shot in 1932. Tests have been made to determine the effect of large shots on the surrounding country. Mr. Taylor said that 4- and 5-yd. shovels were preferable to those of 8 yd.; their performance is better and cost is lower.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

"Large variability of ore types, escalating variables operating costs and increased throughput require large investment in sensors and systems in mineral processing operations. Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

The annual reports of the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the occurrence, properties, mining preparation, and uses of coal, of which the present report is the seventh,4/ are intended to be brief summaries of progress. They are guides to the current work and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published by individuals and groups of workers on specific problems. The annual reports present the results of tests, often in advance of publication in other forms, but original contributions in research are reserved for initial publication by their authors. A survey of the accomplishments of the Bureau in research and technologic work on coal during the 5 year period 1935-40 has been made available in the form of a bibliography.5/ This supplements a similar bibliography on this subject that covers the first 25 years of the Bureau, 1910-35.6/

If the downturn was the result of unsustainable economic policy, the path forward has everything to do with sustain-ably meeting the demands of more people enjoying higher standards of living than ever before. Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.

In order to best-discuss the met spar industry let me take the liberty to review our involvement, that is, my company's. Our organization has been involved in the fluorspar industry for approximately thirty-five years. We started our activity in Western Kentucky as a mining company and a beneficiator of spar, that is, grinding and grading. After a few short years, the mine became contaminated and rather than invest in a flotation plant, the property was sold and our spar activity was moved, primarily to Mexico. It was decided not to establish ourselves as a Mexican corporation, so, it was necessary to take the position of backer-financier of numerous mining operations. We served in this capacity for quite some time. We also built processing plants on the border in Texas, that is, sizing, grading, etc. in order to market into the steel industry. In 1957, generally speaking, fluorspar for the steel industry was purchased as gravel fluorspar with a maximum of 10% -1/16". The price of this material was $23.50 to $24.00 per ton f.o.b. railcar at the Rio Grande Crossings and about $26.00 or $26.25 f.o.b. barge, Brownsville, Texas. Usually the material was purchased on an effective basis. As you know, 2-1/2 times the silica total, subtracted from the total CaF2 gives the effective calcium fluoride. This was normally the extent of the chemical specifications. Consequently, material was shipped with no regard whatever, to anything other than effective units. The variations in material was absolutely unbelievable. In addition to this, quite frequently, cars were shipped, as they say in the industry, topped. This being, good material placed in the top of cars or barges over bad or low grade. The entire shipment may very well have met the effective unit spec, but the complete imbalance of the sub grade vs. the high grade more or less guaranteed that the consumer was probably using a great deal of low grade and therefore, his usage had to be way higher than it should have been. He came to the conclusion, that because of these conditions and the new technology developing in the steel industry, it was just a matter of time that the entire raw material industry would have to improve. Rather than spend our efforts directed to a substitute flux, we put together a sizing and grading plant in order to ship a controlled crude product, with independent laboratory analysis confirming size and quality. The age of control was started. We began shipping 70 to 72-1/2, 80 and 85 effective with sizing 1/2" by 2", 1" by 3", and 2" by 5" with absolute control on the amount of fines. A material with no fines was a premium product. Incidentally it sold for $24.50 -60 effective up to $28.50, $29.50 for 80 effective.
