The relatively large amount of phosphorous occurring in many iron ores limits their usefulness aid sometimes renders them valueless under present conditions of nip-iron manufacture. A practical method for removing the phosphorus would be valuable to the iron and steel industry. Gravity concentration has been of little value as far as the removal of phosphorous is concerned, because the compounds of this element are, as a rule, disseminated very finely. Removal of the phosphorous by leaching is not a new idea and has been the subject of some investigation,3,4/ out for data :lave been published. W.R. Crane published analyse of various ore bodies in the Birmingham ham district. The hard or unleached ores a .re much higher in phosphorous than the Soft, leached ores along the outcrops. This fact indicates that as mild a leaching agent as water removes phosphorus effectively if enough time is allowed for it to react. As the forms in which phosphorous occurs in the iron ores are important in the consideration of any leaching operation, much time was expended in devising a method for determining them. According to Professor McVey, University of Alabama, the phosphorous-bearing minerals in the red iron ores of Alabama have not been positively identified by any microscopic methods.

"Abstract Vibrations generated during the driving of piles or sheet piles can affect buildings or installations in the ground. However, observed building damage is not always caused directly by dynamic effects, but can also be related to foundation conditions. The importance of geotechnical conditions is usually not taken into consideration in most vibration standards. This paper describes how building foundations, and in particular mixed foundation types, are especially sensitive to ground vibrations. A method is presented for assessing the risk of settlement due to vibrations in granular soils. Also, a simple concept is proposed for estimating settlements in the vicinity of driven piles.1. INTRODUCTIONUnder unfavorable conditions, the installation of piles or sheet piles can cause damage to buildings or other structures on the ground. Frequently, such damage is attributed to vibrations of the building itself. In many countries, national or international standards are used to assess the risk of vibration damage to buildings. As such standards are often prepared by engineers with little or no geotechnical knowledge, the effects of ground conditions on vibration propagation and damage to building foundations are generally not recognized, and damage criteria based solely on the dynamic response of buildings neglect the importance of damage mechanisms governed by geotechnical conditions. One potentially important damage mechanism is differential settlement below buildings, especially when these are founded on loose granular soils. When seeking guidance in the literature, little or no information can be found regarding methods to assess permissible levels of ground vibrations with respect to risk for settlement.This paper focuses on building damage that can be attributed to foundation conditions. In the case of ground vibrations due to pile and sheet pile driving, differential settlements are of particular importance as the ground vibrations attenuate relatively rapidly from the source. Consequently, settlement below part of the building, which is located close to the vibration source, can be significantly larger than at a distance further away.Piles are often a cost-effective foundation solution for buildings on loose and compressible soil, frequently located in urbanized areas. Sheet piles are commonly used as support for deep excavations. While impact driving is most commonly used to install piles, vibrators are frequently used for driving (and extraction) of sheet piles. It is important to recognize the fundamental differences between impact and vibratory driving. During impact driving, the pile is subjected to stress waves of short duration. The driving process creates vibrations, which radiate from the shaft and/or the toe of the pile into the soil. The larger the intensity of the stress wave, the larger the dynamic force and the intensity of ground vibrations. In addition to the vibration intensity, which often is expressed in terms of particle velocity, also the vibration frequency is important. When the dominant frequencies of the generated vibrations harmonize with the resonance frequency of buildings or building elements, the risk of building damage increases."

With improved methods for designing and detonating shots the potential for flyrock can be significantly decreased, but there are few absolutes in blasting; therefore blasters must learn from the mistakes of others. Blasters must conscientiously employ control measures to minimize the risk of flyrock. The worst case incidents which tend to be widely reported by the media, should serve as a reminder to us all that minimizing the risk of flyrock must be incorporated into the design of the drill pattern and blast design.

The laws of throwing and heaping of engineering blast are important for making use of throwing and heaping of thrown body to form certain shape, such as building dams by directional blast. The article is to apply Ballistic theory of single thrown body to take the throwing course of thrown body as the movement of particle system, and then delimit the total of thrown body into units of thrown bodies, and regard the heaping shape of single thrown body as a perfect triangle, and found a quantitative relation between macro-geometry parameters of perfect triangle and designed parameters of explosives. The theory has been adopted in blast practice and gotten good effects.

Manganese imparts numerous beneficial mechanical properties. Hence it finds extensive application in iron, steel and non-ferrous sector. Prevalently, it is incorporated in the form of master alloys i.e. 'ferromanganese'. In India, ferromanganese is mainly the inexpensive and paramount source of availability of manganese. Various conventional and non-conventional techniques of ferromanganese production have been adopted in past and present. However, these techniques have demerits viz. high refractory, energy consumption, losses of valuables in slag and fumes. Also geographical co-ordinates of the plant restricted the manufacturer to prefer an appropriate process. Accordingly, the industrially implemented methods had reliance on availability of infrastructure, energy, mineral resources, grade of raw material, outlay of labor, environmental compatibility of technique etc. In view of the liberalized economy and the gap scenario in the supply and demand of ferromanganese, the authors felt it indispensable to explicitly bridge up this vacuum by initially designing a simple energy conserving, eco-friendly, low capital investment technique for decarburization of ferromanganese. Measurement of the data involved studying the impact of rate governing parameters on the process kinetics. Technically competent, skilled and efficient people are often promoted into management and leadership positions, climbing through the ranks to senior positions without training or direction in soft skilling. These soft skills are what really motivate teams to achieve business goals. This paper looks at the three key soft skill areas that compel teams to follow leaders, namely manners, mentoring and motivation. Our manners control our behaviour and attitudes and operate at a subconscious level. The manners that æmaketh the manager worth followingÆ are discussed with the express purpose of bringing these to our consciousness. When we recognise those behaviours that alienate or inspire we can consciously behave in ways to lead our teams towards our goals. Our attitude to mentoring and developing people around us speaks of our commitment to our people and our industry. Surprisingly, the more we give the more we get. Mentoring gives us an opportunity to leave a legacy, inspire commitment and build support within the mining community. How do we as managers provide mentoring within our teams? What are the mentoring behaviours that inspire learning and commitment to a managerÆs goals? When managers can identify an individualÆs unique mix of motivational drivers, they can understand how to motivate them. And motivated people are more likely to be retained and work towards the managerÆs goals. The soft skills used to understand and motivate within the three core motivation drivers (competence, expression and treatment) are presented. This paper is designed to share straightforward soft skills for managers who have tread the technical route.

DURING the last 10 years, several grain-growth studies have been made using zone-refined metals with controlled amounts of solute to elucidate the interaction of solute with moving boundaries. In all these studies, it was more or less implicitly assumed that the alloys used were, after recrystallization and grain growth, homogeneous within the grains with respect to solute and lattice defects. This note deals with observations made on microstructures originating from solidification of dilute alloys and from grain growth. Briefly, the experimental procedure used in these studies was the following: zone-refined cadmium and master alloys were melted and cast in Pyrex under vacuum to produce bars 14 mm in diam and about 150 mm long. These bars were cut into 8-mm-thick slices which were mechanically and chemically polished. The specimens were then deformed 30 pct in compression and given a 1-week anneal at 260°C in argon. After this anneal, a second deformation produced completely recrystallized samples 4 mm thick. The time-temperature controlled anneals were carried out in a bath of silicone oil. After the grain-growth anneal, the specimens were polished in Gil-man's' solution (33 g CrOs, 6 g NazSO, in 100 ml of water). Several etches were used depending on the alloy investigated, but mostly a mixture of concentrated HC1 and HNOj (98:2 vol) was employed. In all the alloys examined, the ease with which substructures could be revealed depended strongly on the crystallographic orientation of the surfaces of the grains. However, very frequently the microstructures to be discussed here etched up over broad areas comprising several grains. Fig. 1 is a micrograph of a Cd-0.05 at. pct Mg alloy annealed for 100 sec at 270°C. Different substructures are seen in this photograph. A denotes the now existing grain boundaries. The well-defined lines and points marked B are the remains of a solidification substructure. The lines are boundaries between cell colonies, and the points are nodes located on regular two-dimensional cells. This cellular structure has the same appearance as that found by weinberg2 for rapidly quenched Zn-Au alloys. The "ghost boundaries", marked C, are very similar in appearance to a grain boundary array in a polycrystalline sample. Repeated polishing and etching showed that all the substructures observed were three-dimensional. To date, the ghost boundaries have been clearly observed in all samples containing 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 1 at. pct Mg, and in samples containing 0.01 at. pct Zn. Attempts to outline these ghost boundaries in cadmium alloys containing 0.01 at. pct Ag and Au were only partially successful. In these alloys, parallel lines, having a resemblance to the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Mg and Cd-Zn alloys, were observed, but it was not possible to obtain complete arrays of ghost boundaries which extended over several grains. It is possible that a different etch than that presently employed would reveal the ghost boundaries in the Cd-Au and Cd-Ag alloys as clearly as in the Cd-Zn and Cd-Mg alloys. A close examination of the ghost structure showed that it consisted of linear etch-pit arrays, Fig. 2. The ghost boundaries were resolvable even in grains which showed over-all faceting due to the etching, as seen in the corner of Fig. 2. The general appearance of the ghost structure suggests that it originated during grain growth. This is supported by the observation that the mesh width in the ghost-boundary array generally increased with increasing final grain size. To test whether the ghost structure was formed during the long homogenizing anneal or during the grain-growth anneal, some as-cast samples were deformed and given a grain-growth anneal. The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow in by the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

"CONTROL STRATEGYThe Lake Dufault Division of Falconbridge Copper Limited has been concentrating a complex copper zinc ore since late 1964. An ARL X-ray on stream analyzer was installed in 1966 for process control. A Digital Equip-ment Corporation PDP8 was added in 1968 for more complete control. To improve the system the computer was exchanged for a Moded PDP-81 in 1971.The new computer is time sharing with 8K core memory and 32K disc storage. A new interface was installed to accommodate 14 X-ray streams and additional analog signals for process control. The system gave us additional capacity and flexibility to make changes in operating programs and control strategy while on line. As the computer is used for process control a modified focal language was chosen as the operating language for ease of operation. This language is more suitable for process control than for statistical work.The main components of the control system are(a) Computer(b) Interface(c) Production Control X-ray Quantometer(d) Teletype terminals(e)Reagent feeders(f) Sample SystemThe operation of the system consists in the computer selecting the various streams to be analyzed by a PCXQ Quantometer. When the flowing sample is presented to the X-ray the intensities of the various elements are read by the computer from analog to digital converter, the assays are then computed. From the tonnage and assays the computer is programmed to determine the amount of reagent added to various parts of the circuit. The computer drives the feeders via the interface for the required amount of reagent. After following a certain sequence the computer prints out the performance and control data on an ASR35 Teletype. The data is printed out approximately every seven minutes. Any des¬ired changes in the program or strategy can be made during operation via an ASR33 Teletype connected to the computer."

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

"Research projects towards developing a sound understanding of the factors controlling the performance of gravity thickeners have been conducted by the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy since 1988 through AMIRA International. The current phase of this work, the three year P266D “Improving Thickener Technology” project, has 27 sponsors comprising mineral processing companies, reagent suppliers and thickener manufacturers.These projects have resulted in the development of a range of tools and techniques to address flocculation, thickening and associated dewatering issues. A number of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models have been developed to predict likely full-scale thickener performance under various process conditions, based upon a knowledge of thickener design, plant flows and assessment of the flocculation behaviour of the feed slurry. At the same time, various laboratory and plant studies have been used to quantify important thickener processes, and to provide validation of the CFD models. These numerical and experimental capabilities have been applied to various thickener issues across a broad range of mineral processing operations, leading to significant process improvements and substantial financial benefits.This paper presents an overview of the work conducted during these projects, focussing on the research tools, the nature of the information that has been gained and the implications for thickener performance."

The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

"When improving a plant a mineral processing engineer would like to know the mineral composition distribution. In order to assess this distribution in particles, as compared to the corresponding distribution in particle sections, a procedure needs to be applied to the observed particle sections. Such a procedure is called a stereological correction. There exists many stereological correction procedures, but one group of such procedures is based on using those stereological equations that do not require making assumptions regarding particle shape or texture. These equations are called geometric probability equations.Davy derived a geometric probability equation to estimate the covariance of mineral composition distributions for particles from both particle sections and linear intercepts. This covariance can be used to measure the variance of the particle composition distribution of each mineral. The equation as presented by Davy requires textural information; however the equation was modified by Gay to be more directly applied to particle sections and linear intercepts. The variance obtained from applying this equation is fundamental to the binary stereological correction procedures developed by Gay and his colleagues; the covariance is fundamental to the multiphase stereological correction.Thus far, validation of both the binary and multiphase stereological correction has been achieved using numerical simulation. This paper shall present results comparing the covariance (and variance) estimates from Gay’s equation with actual three-dimensional information obtained from serially sectioning particles. This involved mounting a set of particles and continuously sectioning all particles uniformly so that the three dimensional structure of the particles could be obtained.The mineralogical data to which the equations described above were applied were derived from two individual size fractions from a hard-rock titanium deposit. Several companies have adopted policies and standards aimed explicitly at increasing ‘local procurement’, recognising that local economic participation has benefits for companies and communities alike. From a corporate perspective, local economic participation is seen as one means of maintaining a social license to operate, as well as ensuring reliability of supply by having a supplier located nearby. From a community perspective, the participation of local businesses in the resource project is a means by which the benefits of resource development can flow into their communities. This paper is based on the research undertaken to produce a good practice guide for the mining, oil and gas sector. Our research revealed that the extent to which the local community will actually benefit from local procurement initiatives is dependent on the capacity of the community to supply goods and services to the project and, even more importantly, on its ability to adapt to the inevitable changes that accompany large-scale resource development. We provide guidance on adapting impact assessment tools to guide planning of procurement interventions.

Outcrop barrier pillars serve to keep mine personnel and the public safe from sudden uncontrolled flows of water accumulated in active and abandoned underground mine workings. When an outcrop barrier fails, the result is an outbreak of water to the surface and is termed as blowout. Mine blowouts are associated with above-drainage mines and can occur through the coal outcrop and sealed portals. A blowout is often catastrophic, a threat to the people on the surface living or working in the path of a potentially large flood. In addition, blowouts can destroy homes, cause landslides and severe erosion and release pollution and acid mine drainage. This paper provides guidance on the planning, design, evaluation and inspection of barriers to address the problem of mine blowouts associated with above-drainage coal mines.

The application of underground pre-concentration technology to narrow vein mining has the potential to change the entire economics of bulk mining methods when used in narrow vein situations. The rejection of waste at or near the face means that a higher-grade ore can be sent to surface. The waste rock can be reused directly as backfill. Swelling of the muck through blasting means that only 60 to 65% can be used as fill. Planning and scheduling of the fill usage is key to the success of this method. Through the use of simulation and system analysis, this paper examines the planning and scheduling implications of underground pre-concentration when applied to traditional narrow vein mining methods (cut-and-fill /drift-and-fill, longhole, AVOCA). It considers the logistical factors that represent potential system bottlenecks that are key to understanding the correct implementation and control strategies.

ABSTRACT: A method (patent pending) has been developed to determine the quality of environmental cab filtration systems. This method utilizes specially configured filter cartridges to remove carbon dioxide from the ambient air with the environmental cab’s air filtration system. A real-time gas monitor is placed inside an unoccupied cab with the filtration system running to time decay the carbon dioxide to its lowest concentration or equilibrium level. The outside carbon dioxide concentration level can be measured concurrently with another gas monitor or with the same inside cab gas monitor during a representative period before and after the inside sampling is conducted. Cab filtration system leakage is comparatively deduced from the difference between the special cartridge filter efficiency and overall cab efficiency. Laboratory trials have illustrated that desirable high efficiency test filter configurations (greater than 99 % efficiency) can be devised, but have air quantity and test time limitations. These trials also demonstrated that CO2 penetration was reflective of controlled air leaks around a high efficiency filter under equilibrium conditions. This report examines the elements of this patent pending method.
