The smelter is the heart of a copper producing operation. Its principal function is to reduce and convert raw copper concentrates and/or leach plant precipitates into blister copper before it is refined. In addition to concentrates and precipitates, typical feed to a smelter also encompasses matte chips, flue dust, flux and lime. By nature, the characteristics of these materials are extremely variable, ranging from sub-micron to lumps, from slurry to dust, from abrasive to corrosive and free-flowing to adhesive. Furthermore, as a result of geological formation, most of the world's open pit copper mines are located in a semi-arid zone, where precipitation is minimal. This particular climate compounds the problem of handling these materials.

The microtunneling project for the State of Hawaii's Natural Energy Laboratory (NELH) facility in Kona, Hawaii, was awarded to Nova Group Inc., Napa, California. Nova has developed both microtunnel and deep pile cofferdam experience. Both of which would be required for this project. The project was designed by Makai Ocean Engineering of Honolulu as a continuation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Project (OTEC). The world's first OTEC plant has been successfully operational at NELH since 1982 netting approx 50 kw of usable electric power from a gross generation of 210 kw. A second plant designed to draw 39°F cold water from 3,000 ft below sea level and produce a gross output of 1 mw with a net 500 kw of usable power required 2 - 54 in. finished diameter pipelines. An ongoing problem with earlier offshore pipelines has been the damage to the near-shore pipes within the surf zone. The necessity for a deeper connection between the land based pipe and submerged sea pipeline was obvious. Earlier pipelines had been drilled and shot through the shoreline. This process was only practical at shallow depths. Makai Ocean Engineering and the NELH scientists looked at different methods to get the pipeline through the shoreline at a depth of 80 ft below sea level. Initially, the direction drilling method was proposed as the most potentially practical method. A contract was awarded and various attempts were made to complete a successful

Relatively large amounts of such hydrocarbons as fuel oils are often needed in flotation of low rank coals. The amount of oil can be decreased considerably by using surfactants as promotors. The reagents which are good candidates as surfactants to promote hydrophobicity can also act as emulsifying and wetting agents. Since the physical and chemical variables influence various sub-processes in different ways, their influence on the performance parameters is complex. The results of laboratory tests are presented to show that the dual role of reagents can be judiciously exploited to increase both the recovery and grade of clean coal. The mode and order of reagent addition is critical in enhancing their efficacy as flotation promotors. The results demonstrate the benefits of proper conditioning of the pulp prior to flotation.

The idea that fragmentation for mineral processing results from some tradeoff between increased drilling and blasting and increased load on the primary crusher is well known. In a previous paper (Lundquist and Konya, 1963) the authors reported on the results of a laboratory scale study which attempted to quantify this tradeoff in energy terms. If we look only at the production of new surface area, blasting is 1700 times as energy efficient as crushing. On an energy cost basis, crushing is 57 times as expensive per unit surface produced as blasting with dynamite and more than 700 times as expensive as blasting with ANFO. The comminution process at an open pit operation starts with the drilling of blast holes and ends after the material has gone through the fine grind circuit. Operators usually break the process into several separate operations and do their cost analysis based on this approach. Often drilling and blasting is considered as one system and crushing and grinding are considered as one or two separate and independent systems. Operators will independently optimize each system. The cost for the drilling and blasting system is obvious in operations which use contract drillers to do the drilling and either contract the blasting to a distributor or do the blasting themselves. The cost of rock breaking in this manner is readily available since the contract driller will supply a monthly drilling cost to the operation and either the distributor who is contracting the blasting or the distributor who is supplying the powder to the blasting operation will also supply a monthly billing. In either case, the costs can easily be seen on a monthly or per ton basis. They are not difficult to compute even when drilling and blasting are done entirely in-house.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. He has the right to accept or reject such recommendations, in whole or in part, in the light of the national interest,

The process of magnetic separation is based on the differences among magnetic susceptibilities of various mineral species. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents from a product stream. There are two major catagories to be considered when addressing magnetic separation of minerals. The first catagory refers to particle characterization and relative differences in magnetic susceptibility. The second catagory refers to design parameters and the magnetic field generated by the separator.

The Ireland Mine is located some seven miles South of Moundsville West Virginia, along the bank of the Ohio River. We are mining the Pittsburgh #8 seam. This seam is approximately 60" in thickness, and is immediately overlain by some 10 feet of a conglommerate material. The roof is difficult to control, due to the fact that it frequently is composed of substances not hard enough to be held together with 6-foot roof bolts. In many cases, we must use 10-foot roof bolts, in order to get bolt anchorage in the limestone above the conglommerate. Due to the elasticity of the limestone and its tendency to bend rather than to break, we have been unable to maintain a pillar line. Thus, we have found it necessary to mine by the room and pillar system. Belt haulage is used on room entries to automatic loading stations, thence into 15-ton mine cars, controlled at the loading point by car spotters. The maximum belt length is 2,000 feet. Rail haulage to the slope-bottom dump is by 27- and 50-ton locomotives. The mine produces coal two shifts per day, with 7 production crews on each shift. Mine and machinery maintenance is performed on the Midnight shift. We handle an average of 660 tons per machine shift.

The importance of underground stress instrumentation cannot be minimized. It was Lord Kelvin who said that unless you can assign a number to a quantity,, you know very little about it. Most engineers will agree although this kind of statement is resented by our friends in non-technical fields. Mining is undergoing a revolution from art to science. But how can mining methods be optimized if there is no way of measuring the effectiveness of a given mining method? Do we know how effective a' support is unless we can determine its reaction to the mine structure? How do we assess the need for modifications to existing systems and supports, and how do we measure the effectiveness of such changes? Cut and try techniques are too wasteful of time and energy, and rarely provide solutions to a given problem. The purpose of underground stress instrumentation is to provide answers to some of the above questions -- answers that cannot be obtained otherwise This does not mean that laboratory studies are not valuable -on the contrary. Laboratory and underground studies supplement one another. Rock mechanics had its conception with the study of stresses in homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic models subjected to various force systems. These analyses were valuable inasmuch as they pinpointed possible sources of trouble due to stress concentrations. If the results observed underground did not always agree with the experimental analysis, it was not an indictment of the latter. More probably, the discrepancy could be attributed to the lack of similitude between model and prototype. The more nearly one can simulate underground conditions in a model, the more apt one is to produce results which correlate well-with underground observations. It is impossible to completely simulate underground conditions because all of the significant design parameters have not been recognized and evaluated. What better way can one evaluate these parameters than by underground stress instrumentation?

A full survey of the laboratory and blast-furnace tests on 2 types of acid pellets is given. From the laboratory tests, carried out in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, it appears that type B, produced out of 100% magnetitic ores, has a far better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A, produced from a hematite/magnetite mixture. The swelling index, chemical composition and mechanical properties of both types of pellets do not differ significantly. From the blast-furnace test, carried out with a burden consisting of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter with basicsty ratio about 2.2, and at constant driving rate, it follows that there is no significant relationship between the disintegration value of the pellets and the blast-furnace permeability. If also is concluded that the lower reducibility of the type B pellets leads to a significantly higher coke consumption.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Conditioning is any treatment of an ore with or without reagents which affect its floatability. While it can start in crushing or grinding circuits and continue into the flotation circuit, conditioning will refer here only to reagent treatment in an agitated tank designed for the purpose. Such treatment is often unnecessary with sulphide ores and collectors or with amines,* but it has long been recognized as essential with fatty acid collectors in the flotation of non-sulphide minerals, The requirements can be extremely variable, depending upon ore alteration, the presence or absence of slimes, and 1 the minerals to be separated. The study described here was concerned with the recovery of oxidized molybdenum minerals from an ore containing the element in both sulphide and oxidized form. Flotation of the iron minerals with which the oxidized molybdenum was associated was the basis for the process. Recovery and optimum concentrate grade without desliming depended upon a twenty to thirty minute conditioning of the pulp with flotation reagents at forty to fifty percent solids and at high turbulence. The objective in the study was the determination of design and operating criteria for conditioners in order to permit scaling-up of the results without repeating the entire study on a larger scale.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1 : 100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Seismic methods provide an efficient and comprehensive approach to overburden studies pertinent to mining exploration and development, and to other mining and civil engineering problems such as rock mechanics, slope stability, and foundation engineering. For the purpose of defining geologic units and structural features, these methods are generally regarded as the most accurate, but most expensive, of the commonly-used geophysical exploration methods. Although the accuracy and cost of seismic work are generally affected adversely by rugged topography and complicated geologic conditions, it is in rough terrain and complex geology that seismic methods offer important advantages in overburden investigations. For example, to find the surface of rock underlying unconsolidated overburden at depths of approximately 200 feet, a 50-foot spacing of drill holes along the profile line would be required to yield a degree of resolution and accuracy similar to that obtained from a 50-foot spacing between seismic detectors along the same line. See Figure 1. In cases similar to that shown in Figure 1, a twelve-channel recording seismic system would be used. The main components of such a system would be: 1. detectors (commonly referred to as geophones) which convert the ground movement resulting from seismic waves into an electrical signal. 2. a multi-conductor cable which connects the seismic detectors to the amplifiers. 3. ampliiiers, amplify and filter the electrical signals . 4. oscillograph, records the amplified signal. 5. the blaster and firing line. A typical layout of the seismic spread and the components of the system Is shown in Figure 2.

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Investigated were a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal-extraction side of the longwall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. In laboratory experiments and in a longwall field evaluation, the translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust-control effectiveness for a distance of up to 60 m downstream of the shearer, provided that the mesh barrier remained relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust-control effectiveness in the laboratory and, therefore, was not field tested.

In recent years, the use of shotcrete, a practice familiar to the mining industry, has been on the increase. This research has come about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small diameter bored raises (less then 150cm). Up until now, an operator has gone down the raise and applied the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.
