About 100 mine-waste dumps from past metal exploration and mining in Colorado and Montana were sampled using surficial-sampling methods for laboratory studies of the minus-2-mm fraction. In the laboratory, the composite samples were split into l00g samples that were leached to assess their acid-generation potential and associated release of potentially toxic metals that may degrade water quality in the headwaters of the Animas River watershed in Colorado and the Boulder River watershed in Montana. Two leach methods were studied: a passive leach using de-ionized water, and a more aggressive leach following the EPA-1312 method. The resulting pH values of the leachates using both methods are comparable. The concentrations of sulfate and several, but not all, dissolved or water-soluble metals are higher in the EPA-1312 leachates than in the passive leachates; however, the overall trends of the data are very similar. The passive leach method is less labor intensive and may be more representative of the natural weathering process occurring on the mine-waste dumps, simulating the natural precipitation and snowmelt. Three chemical characteristics of mine wastes studied here provide a relative ranking of mine-waste dumps for the purpose of determining priority for removal or remediation. These characteristics are: net acid production (NAP), sum of dissolved toxic metals (?As+Cd+Cu+Pb+Zn), and dissolved iron in leachates. Ranking can be done evaluating plots of NAP versus the sum of dissolved toxic metals, and NAP versus dissolved iron. These two plots serve as a basis for relative ranking of polymetallic-vein and acid-sulfate mine wastes studied. This ranking scheme may apply to mine wastes from production of other deposit types in other watersheds.

The use of medium-to-high sulfur coals has been negatively impacted by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment (CAAA). In this article, a method is demonstrated that can render these coals competitive and yet compliant with Phase II of CAAA. The method uses strategic mining and optimized preparation plant operation to minimize production costs, and it utilizes advanced coal-cleaning technology and an SO2 allowance to produce a compliant coal. The method is illustrated through an example from southern Illinois. For an annual production of 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) and with a $150/st SO2 allowance cost, it was possible to produce a competitive coal for $0.84/million Btu. The production and allowance costs were $0.608/million Btu and $0.232/million Btu, respectively.

While the Andean belt of Chile contains porphyry copper deposits of considerable economic importance, only one major and several minor deposits of this type have been discovered in neighboring Argentina. There are no obvious geologic reasons for the country's apparent paucity of important porphyry copper deposits. Instead, a lack of exploration because of poor accessibility and past inadequate mining legislation may partly account for this situation. Western Argentina has porphyry copper prospects ranging in age from late Paleozoic to Pliocene. Many of these prospects have host rock and alteration characteristics that are very similar to those of large Chilean deposits. The economic potential of many of these prospects has not been tested adequately by geoehemical, geophysical, or chilling programs. A recently enacted mining promotion law and updated mining code removes some past exploration obstacles in Argentina, and makes in-depth exploration and evaluation of' the county's porphyry copper potential attractive.

A kinetic model for the batch leaching of various metals using different lixiviants was developed. The overall material balances for the reactants and products at the solid/ liquid interface were formulated for various types of heterogeneous reactions at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances are identified analytically, as well as numerically. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using rotating discs or powders are discussed. The metal-dissolution systems addressed include cobalt, nickel and copper in acid, cyanide and ammoniacal solutions.

Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfurcontaining solids that react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects that involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or that utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention is being focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several processes available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to reduce tailings toxicity and to allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of processes available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the processes. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.

Environmental management and planning requires the integration of large volumes of disparate information from many sources and the analysis of this information with efficient tools for assessment and evaluation. Effective methods of communication that allow interactive participation in the planning, assessment and decision-making processes are also very important. The VULCAN software package from Maptek (Pty) Ltd comprises a large number of 3D graphical tools within an interactive 3D interface called ENVISAGE. These tools are designed and developed to help engineers and scientists to identify and solve environmental problems. The combination of VULCAN 3D Software and the I-SiTE 3D Laser Imaging system leads to powerful solutions for environmental management. This paper presents the capabilities of this integrated system and its applications for environmental management.

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in underground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Proper designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary to achieve efficient mine haul- age. Two computer simulation models, CMBCS and BELTSIM, available for designing these parameters were compared. These comparisons included modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.

A basic model was developed to help assess methane control needs for the longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending on reservoir and rock mechanical theories, it uses an empirically determined gas emission rate as an input, and it operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid in the determina¬tion of the number, size and location of vertical wells or other methane-control applications that are needed for gob gas control.

"Durability design for underground structures is an increasing focus of designers and owners in the underground construction industry. Many owners have expanded their requirements for durability design, with specific requirements for structure lifecycle and designer certification of structural durability. This paper describes current trends and best practices including: defining the underground structure lifecycle, historically durable underground structures, design methods for underground structure durability built of reinforced concrete, and durability of materials. Criteria to be used for defining end of structure life and owner’s maintenance responsibilities are crucial to lifecycle contract requirements. Current practices of several major owners are presented. Design methods are presented including United States code requirements. Current best practices for enhancing the durability of materials used in underground construction are discussed including: low permeability concrete, steel reinforcement concrete cover, the use of steel fiber, and testing for verification. INTRODUCTION Durability design is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of good design practice. Infrastructure owners recognize that to serve the public interest, constructed facilities must be lasting and durable. The public understands that structures with limited service life result in increased costs and add to their daily inconvenience with frequent repair and reconstruction. Engineers are increasingly asking not only is the structure strong enough but will it last for generations. Durability design requirements are no longer just adherence to some accepted practices, but are based on analytical approaches, with results that can challenge our beliefs in what construction materials and details result in a durable structure. This paper describes current industry requirements and practices for durability design of underground structures, and offers some suggestions regarding future trends and developments. SERVICE LIFE DEFINITION The service life of a structure is the sum of the time to onset of deterioration, called initiation period (ti), and the subsequent time period of deterioration ending when the structure is no longer functional, called propagation period (tp). Figure 1 shows a conceptual service life diagram. These time periods can be substantially affected by the level of maintenance performed during the life of the structure."

"The future of mining will be characterized not only by the application of modern technology, but also by the harmonization of economic, environmental and social issues. These areas set major future challenges which are complex and demand extensive knowledge. As an example, mining of highly complex orebodies for the supply of often critical raw materials, needs to consider technically demanding and cost-intensive extraction issues. The amount of tailings, which need to be stored, increases with the amount of ore mined. Therefore, the negative impact on environment and society increases. Hence mining becomes expensive with regard to all three aspects: economy, environment and society. In view of a sustainable mining practice this challenge should be used as an opportunity. The positive impact should be maximized for present and future generations. The objective is to create and use the mining openings in an optimum way related to sustainability. The approach of Blue Mining, which focuses on energy and ergonomics in the field of Sustainable Development, enhances the closure planning by recommending subsequent usage of such openings for energy storage. The approach fosters among others the implementation of the 7th Goal for Sustainable Development defined by the United Nations with the assurance of access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. The usage of underground storage increases the stability of solar and water power usage, which are otherwise unreliable. Blue Mining embeds these issues in the main planning effort long before groundbreaking. This approach involves experience from past and current projects. This paper introduces the concept of Blue Mining with respect to post-mining utilization of a mine for energy storage. Methods and perspectives are presented with examples covering best-practices and lessons-learned."

Fluxes are used to promote pyrometallurgical processes that rely on adhesion (soldering or brazing) or fusion (gas and arc welding) to join metallic surfaces. In the adhesive processes, the metal surfaces to be joined are not melted; the join is formed using a filler metal with lower melting point than the base metal. Fusion welding involves use of heat in excess of the melting point of the base metal. The fused joint may be achieved either by simply fusing together metal surfaces brought in contact with each other or by introducing additional molten metal of similar composition to form a fused joint. ADHESIVE PROCESSES--SOLDERING AND BRAZING In order for molten filler metal, solder or braze, to spread in a manner that creates a successful join; the work surfaces on the base metal must be thoroughly cleansed. Fluxes remove stubborn oxide films and other surface contaminants, promote wetting of the work surfaces, add fluidity to the solder or braze, and enhance workability and ease of spreading. Brazing processes involve higher temperatures than those reached in soldering. Brazing fluxes, which must remain active and effective at the higher temperatures, differ from those employed in soldering. Some common fluxes used in adhesive processes are rosin for soldering tin and electrical connections, hydrochloric acid for use in soldering galvanized iron and other zinc surfaces, and borax for brazing. Soldering and brazing are similar processes, the primary difference being the temperature at which the joining operation is carried out. Soldered joints, produced with low-melting-point fillers (solders) that melt and flow at temperature less that 450°C (Althouse et al., 1988) can sustain loads of 1 to 1.7 MPa for extended periods of time (Anon., 1966). Brazing involves the use of filler materials with melting points commonly above 500°C and generally provides stronger joints than those obtained with solder. Both processes require local application of heat to melt and spread the filler so that the molten filler can wet (adhere to) the base metals by alloying and diffusion. Soldering Soldering is a means of joining metals by adhesion using a metallic bonding alloy as the filler, commonly a mixture of lead and tin. However, the adhesion of solder depends more on its ability to be keyed into minute surface irregularities than on alloying. The most familiar application is to provide and secure electrical connections. Soft solders can range from 1 to 70% tin with the remainder mostly lead. However, for general-purpose, soft-solder work, the alloy is commonly 50% lead-50% tin. Higher lead contents provide a wider range in the melting temperature and, for this reason, a 60% lead-40% tin alloy, which yields a mushy mixture, is used for wiped joints in lead sheet and pipe work. Conversely, 40% lead-60% tin alloys are used in soldering tin and other low- melting-point materials for which a narrower range of melting temperature is required. There are numerous other solder compositions such as tin-silver, 95% tin-5% silver and antimony-tin, 95% tin and 5% antimony (Carlin, Jr., 1992). Heat needed to melt and spread the solders is commonly provided by electrically heated, copper-tipped soldering irons or by means of torches; the solder is applied by hand, usually face-fed by means of wire. For wiped joints in plumbing and lead-cable splicing, the solder is manipulated with cloth pads. The molten solder wets the joint surfaces and is drawn, by surface tension, into minute fissures and capillary openings. Other applications involve use of induction heaters and furnaces with pre-shaped solder appropriately placed prior to fluxing and heating. In some processes, the joints are immersed in molten solder. Constituents and Role of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes generally fall into one of three categories: highly corrosive fluxes, intermediate fluxes, and noncorrosive fluxes. These same categories are sometimes designated inorganic, organic and rosin-based respectively (Althouse et al., 1988). Common constituents of each group are discussed briefly below. Corrosive Fluxes (Inorganic). Work with aluminum, magnesium, stainless steel, high alloy steel, aluminum bronzes, and silicon bronzes is carried out at temperatures in the upper portion of the range for solder operations. Soldering these materials requires use of highly active, corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the formation of the especially stubborn, hard, oxide films that form on these materials upon exposure to the atmosphere. The corrosive fluxes consist of inorganic acids and salts that are applied either as pastes or dry. They are active at elevated temperatures and, since they remain active after the soldering is completed, must be completely removed. The main constituent of most corrosive fluxes is zinc chloride with a melting temperature well above the solidus temperature of most commercial tin-lead solders. It is made by the action of hydrochloric acid on zinc. When zinc chloride is used alone, un- melted particles of this corrosive salt get caught up in the joint and weaken it. For this reason, other inorganic salts such as ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or sodium chloride (NaCl) may be added to lower the melting temperature. A mixture of zinc chloride and ammonium chloride is very effective because the excellent oxide reducing properties of ammonium chloride and the protective action of the molten zinc chloride combine to produce a fluxing action superior to that achieved when either is used alone. Rössing Uranium Limited has operated since 1976 a large open pit uranium mine and extraction plant at a remote site in the Namib desert, South West Africa/Namibia. The geology (Berning, I., et al. Economy Geology) and the technical aspects concerning mining, grade control and metallurgy have previously been described (Rössing Uranium, Mining Magazin and Whyllie, R.J.M. "Rössing Uranium reaches rated production", World Mining). The improvement of leach 'extraction has been reported in 1984 (Kesler, S.B. et. al. "Uranium extraction at Rössing") and the installation of a central process control system has been described (Kesler, S.B. et al. "The introduction of a central process system at Rössing"). At the beginning of 1983 a decision was made to develop a computer system for metallurgical plant optimisation which included mass and volumetric balances, analytical assays for up to 5 chemical elements and the costs for the major consumables. Within 10 months this computer system was developed and implemented. A large number of test runs were made and computer studies were undertaken. The metallurgical division now has a scientific tool for production; planning for actual comparison with plant results and for strategic investigations and decision making.

Based on standard population balance models for agglomeration and size reduction processes, a simplified model has been developed to describe simultaneous growth and breakage in the flocculation of agitated suspensions. The results of semi-batch flocculation tests have been used for estimation of the model parameters and empirical relationships have been obtained to describe the effects of process variables and to establish scale-up criteria. Application of the model to the design, operation and control of continuous flocculation processes is discussed.

Chemical dewatering aids for mineral slurries generally fall into two classes: surfactants and flocculants, which can be used separately or together. Current industrial use of both types of reagents is summarized for sulfide and non-metallic minerals, as well as uranium and gold leach residues and coal refuse. Laboratory testing for reagent selection is briefly discussed along with reagent preparation. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique was used to analyze and optimize the design of the dynamic air classifier integral to Raymond® Bowl Mills. Flow patterns and particle behaviors were modeled in the RB Bowl Mill equipped with various classifier designs. These CFD simulations resulted in the development of a hybrid turbine classifier that has now been field-tested, yielding significant improvements to both mill throughput and product size distribution. This paper demonstrates the viability of CFD as a tool for air classifier design and as a technique that can be extrapolated for use with other pulverizer and classifier arrangements.

An air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) mobile system was evaluated for continuous stripping and recovery of cyanide (the AVR process) from process water at a gold plant site. The ASH unit performed exceptionally well as an absorber. HCN was removed from the gas phase in a single one second pass with an efficiency exceeding 99%. HCN concentration in the discharged gas phase was lower than 10 ppm, which provided for a safe working environment. The stripping efficiency, controlled by the Henry’s Law constant, exceeded 40% in one pass.

In May 1998, Hanson Aggregates Midwest, as an outcome of mine planning, offered a 10-acre tract of land containing the famed fossil-bearing Silica formation, to the City of Sylvania, OH. in the form of a 99-year lease agreement. The Olander Park System, and Ohio code park operating within Sylvania Township, was then approved by Hanson and the City to manage and fund the park. All parties signed the lease in August of 1999. In November 2001, local residents voted to fund the park by a margin of 2 to 1. The park will consist of a shallow (approx. 20 ft.) former cement production quarry that is 700 ft. long by 300 ft. wide. Hanson’s motivation and vision for the park was fivefold: 1) the site was located away from long-term reserve access; 2) it would serve nicely as buffer property for the active quarry; 3) it had become an area of illegal dumping by locals in the past; 4) trespassing and safety issues would be limited by allowing supervised usage; and 5) the shallow outcropping contains the world famous, fossil-bearing Silica shale. Hanson will supply shale to the park perpetually via stripping activities in the process of uncovering quality construction aggregate limestone and dolomite reserves. Thousands of enthusiastic fossil hunters have already combed throughout the shale in their quest for “treasures”. The park’s master plan also features nature trails, picnic areas, a fossil-themed play area, amphitheater, visitor’s center and gift shop. Given the natural and people resources that Sylvania Fossil Park will have to offer, Hanson is confident that it will become the premier invertebrate fossil hunting site in the United States. It will also remain a solid community relations vehicle for years to come.

Modeling uranium mine radiation control methods and natural environmental radon variations is an extremely complex endeavor. A number of authors have examined particular facets of the problem and have proposed models for their area of interest. Bureau of Mines personnel brought together many of these individual studies, and from them have attempted to develop a coordinated plan for modeling radon daughter concentrations in the uranium mine environment. This approach is described.
