Geostatistics of coal thickness and quality parameters for various coal seams in the San Juan Basin of New Mexico are reviewed. Interpretation of the histograms, variograms, and drifts of the data in the context of depositional environment and post-depositional geological history is discussed. A multivariate geostatistical technique for checking the accuracy of seam correlations is demonstrated.

The depressed economic condition resulting from normal cyclic behavior, a more fundamental structural alteration, or both, is a mandate for change within the mining industry. Although several strategies for change have been proposed, the option of applying high technology processes to this smokestack industry offers the greatest opportunity for regaining global competitiveness and a new vitality. Research and development to secure new technologies require a corporate commitment for substantive change, a tech¬nologically enlightened management, a well¬funded and stable science and engineering effort, and a dedicated and motivated technical team--features in short supply in the mining industry today. However, an alternative to in-house development of frontier technologies is available to this beleagured industry through entrepreneurial, high-tech companies. These entities, with their dedicated focus toward product development, motivated and streamlined teams, high productivity and efficiency, and low costs offer a unique opportunity for large corporations to obtain high-tech products and services. These commodities are available through traditional commercial channels and an array of creative business arrangements. The latter offers notable benefits to large companies including windows on frontier technologies and mitigation of risk. Likewise, entrepreneurial companies profit through manufacturing and marketing relationships and an expanded financial base.

This paper discusses simulation modelling of underground mining operations at a typical mine in the Sudbury mining area in Ontario, Canada. The PC simulation software, WITNESS Version 7 Release 6.0 by AT&T ISTEL, is used to model the drilling, blasting, hauling and ground support operations. Simulation is used to investigate the development mining cycle and determine the capabilities and flexibility of WITNESS to accurately represent the mining system under consideration. The simulation study discussed in this paper provides a first step in determining the successful application of WITNESS in the underground operational aspects of the mining industry.

Early in 1972, Rocky Mountain Energy Company approached MARCONAFLO with a unique request for assistance. They controlled a series of scattered ore deposits in a remote section of Wyoming which had become increasingly valuable despite their relatively small size, great depth and low grade. At the time, MARCONAFLO was in the process of developing a tailings reclaim system which was based on the use of submersible capsules. It appeared that this basic concept might be adapted to slurry uranium ores and pump them to the surface through a bored hole. This presentation will review for you the development of this unique and potentially very important application of MARCONAFLO technology. This first slide (SLIDE 1) depicts the total mining concept envisioned by MARCONAFLO and Rocky Mountain Energy Company. A series of six self-contained mining units would be positioned through boreholes into the ore strata. An oscillating MARCONAJET would direct a high pressure jet stream into the orebody and put it into a slurry which would flow back to a slurry pump. The slurry would then be pumped to the surface and to a collection tank from which it would be transferred to processing. Both the MARCONAJET and the slurry pump would be actuated and controlled by means of a hydraulic power console mounted on the trailer behind the service tower. By means of a high pressure water pump also mounted on the trailer, return water from processing would be delivered to the MARCONAJET to slurry the ore. Tailings would be returned to a backfill unit for redepositing in the mined-out cavities. A drill rig would precede the mining, and it was estimated that this configuration would represent an optimum system for most effective equipment utilization.

The mine environment is dynamic and operating conditions change continually and are difficult to predict. New equipment, variable geological conditions, modified layouts, and different equipment operators make monitoring and control system difficult to apply without continual software maintenance. The paper reports on algorithms that were developed, encoded with Knowledge Craft Tools, and tested on underground coal mine data to adapt to the dynamic environment. The system receives data from sensors in near real time and then identifies patterns in the data. Using a set of mode features the data is automatically checked to determine the present operating mode. When the operating mode changes from the previous shifts, the system automatically learns the new mode characteristics and uses that mode context for further data analysis. The concepts presented in this paper are applicable to a wide variety of mining scenarios, not just underground coal mining.

For reasons of hydraulic design and constructability, water supply tunnel systems are often located relatively deep, in competent rock. Where the rock lies below a thick cover of water bearing soils, artificial ground freezing offers a low risk, cost-effective method of constructing access shafts. Several examples, in Kansas City, MO and in Brooklyn and Queens, NY, illustrate the use of freezing to provide structural support and ground water exclusion. In the case histories presented, the shafts range from 6m to 12m (20 to 40 ft) in diameter and soils vary from clays to boulder beds with depths in excess of 73m (240 ft) to competent bedrock. Where tunnels for infrastructure are designed to be driven in rock, vertical access may encounter a considerable thickness of overburden soils with groundwater. In such cases, shaft sinking problems are analogous to those confronted by mining engineers over 100 years ago. At that time, newly developed refrigeration machines were set to freeze the ground water and stabilize running sands. Although modern technology has refined our efforts, the basic features of the ground freezing to be described here are the same as those used in the last century. Vertical holes drilled on a circle surrounding the shaft site are equipped with leak-free steelpipes through which a refrigerated brine is circulated. In this manner, a frozen cylinder, seated in rock, is formed when the earth freezes between adjacent pipes. Shaft excavations take place inside a self-supporting, ground-water excluding structure. For mines, no better method of sinking production shafts through deepwater-bearing ground has yet been established. Indeed, major deposits of coal, potash, and salt would have remained inaccessible to this day were it not for the continued use of artificial ground freezing. If mine shaft freezing became relatively commonplace, early applications to civil engineering were few. Mussche and Waddington (1946) mention only five projects between 1892 and 1935; three of these relate to subway or vehicular tunnels in Paris, Antwerp, and (the most extensive) at five locations of the Moscow Metropolitan Railway development. In the United States, the method was used to spectacular effect in 1936, freezing about 3,000 cubic yards of silt to stop a slide

The Concha-Almendra batch-settling treatment for concentrated suspensions of single-diameter spheres has been modified. This modified version is used in the differential equations of simple batch settling of a particle size range of different density materials. The equations have been programmed for a finite difference solution, and a number of test cases have been analyzed. By cutting the settling column at a fixed fractional height, the material below this height can be treated as underflow and the material above as overflow. The predicted partition curves obtained from treating the settling in this way have Sharpness Indices in the range of 0.5 to 0.6, in the absence of dispersion effects. The Sharpness Indices decrease as dispersion increases. When the feed size distributions are of the Rosin-Rammler form, the partition curves (corrected for the bypass fraction) fit the Rosin-Rammler equation with reasonable accuracy. The predicted Sharpness Index of a component of a mixture of two materials of different densities was unchanged from that of the same materials settled alone. However, for the same, feed size distribution and volume fraction of solids in the feed, the heavier material settled faster, and the lighter settled slower, than when settled alone.

During the last ten years Parsons Brinckerhoff has become a leader in the area of tunnel rehabilitation. A significant part of any tunnel rehabilitation program is the control of groundwater infiltration into the structure. This leakage over time, causes deterioration of the structures, and creates numerous operational problems for the tunnel operator. This paper will address current procedures for identification, documentation, and recommendations of repair methods for the control of groundwater infiltration in rail and highway tunnels.

Before the development of the underground stoping and mining costs can be considered, certain facts about the ore body, the proposed mine, markets, etc., must be known or determined. In the case to be studied, the zinc-lead mineralization occurred with a narrow vertically dipping structure of undetermined length and vertical extent. Exploration completed to date has revealed 6.5 mil¬lion st t of proven reserves. A further 820,000 st of in¬dicated reserves has been outlined and this tonnage is considered capable of being expanded by a factor of approximately four after more detailed drilling. After studying the market conditions and completing a very preliminary feasibility study, it was decided that production would be 730,000 stpy (or 2000 stpd) of ore. First year production would be at the rate of 1500 stpd. The main design criteria for the selection of the min¬ing methods are minimizing surface subsidence, maxi¬mum recovery of the ore body, maximum degree of grade control, maximum productivity, and safe working conditions. Two basic extraction systems are considered capable of meeting these requirements: mechanized cut¬and-fill stoping and sublevel long-hole stoping with filling. The primary development system of the mine has been designed to give maximum flexibility in stoping systems and layout and to permit changes if considered necessary as a consequence of actual production ex¬perience. At the present time, access to the mine is by a circu¬lar concrete lined vertical shaft, 16 ft diam, sunk to a depth of 1380 ft. Two exploration levels have been driven within the ore zone at depths of 165 and 1246 ft below the surface outcrop. The development to date had the objective of sampling the mineralization and produc¬ing detailed information on the outline of the ore body and the distribution and controls of zinc and lead values. In an attempt to satisfy the basic design criteria for the mine, it was decided that production would be best achieved by a combination of 40% sublevel long-hole stoping and 60% cut-and-fill mining. Costs of exploration and capital development of per¬manent underground facilities are normally written off over the life of a mine. Production expenditures, on the other hand, are of a temporary nature and are normally charged as and when incurred as an operating expense. Reasonably accurate predictions of mine production costs can be built up from engineering design and estimates of individual mine activities for ultimate inclusion in the comprehen¬sive data required for financial decision making. The simulated operations can be costed on a detailed basis in the form of a monthly operating budget. The budget format can be generalized or detailed, depending upon the scope of the project. However, ex¬perience suggests that a fairly detailed format has the advantage of assuring that all significant cost items are included. For underground costing it is suggested that the budget structure include five major cost centers (i.e. development, diamond drilling, ore extraction, hoisting/ transportation, and general mine expense). These in turn are detailed under numerous subheadings. The mechanism for compiling an operating budget will be illustrated. Because of its relative simplicity, ore extraction under sublevel long-hole stoping has been chosen for illustration. All other activities, simple or complex, can be estimated in similar fashion. BLOCK AND STOPE DEVELOPMENT Long-hole blocks, used where advantageous, will be up to 250 ft in height, depending upon the vertical con¬tinuity of the mineralization, and approximately 300 ft long. Drawpoints will be at 36-ft intervals and serviced by loading crosscuts driven from a footwall drift parallel to and close to the ore zone. Pillars between the stopes will be 50 ft wide. Stopes will be drilled off with vertical rings of blastholes drilled from sublevels approximately 60 ft apart vertically. This drilling will be done by percussion drilling machines (31/2 in.) mounted on a trackless drilling rig. Load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment will be used to move broken ore from the drawpoints to the orepass connecting to rail haulage systems. On completion, long-hole stopes will be backfilled to prevent caving and to facili¬tate later pillar removal. From a planned stope layout, a forecast of produc¬tion and development is made in Table 1. Table 1. Underground stone mines are vulnerable to karst void formations due to the erosion of carbonate rocks by groundwater flow. The voids or cavities may lead to hazards including ground collapse and sudden outflow of clay-rock sediments during the development of the mine. This study evaluates the effect of karst voids on the strength of pillars in an underground room-and-pillar limestone mine. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were interpreted to map the void boundaries inside a karst-affected pillar. A combination of LiDAR scanning and virtual discontinuity mapping is used to formulate the discrete fracture network (DFN). Discrete element modeling (DEM) helps simulate the effect of karsts and discontinuities in the pillar models with varying stress. It is observed that the cavities may lead to a significant reduction in pillar strength. Apart from posing a hazard to miners and machinery, any advance into these cavities may disrupt mine operations. This research serves as an initial step toward understanding the importance of pillar design in underground stone mines affected by karst voids to prevent local instability or pillar failures.

INTRODUCTION This method is a variation of cut-and-fill mining where either the wall rock or the vein is too unconsolidated to permit safe mining by conventional cut-and-fill methods. Basic development consists of driving a 2.4 x 2.7-m (8 x 9-ft) haulage heading laterally in the footwall side of the vein. Crosscuts are driven over to the vein at 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Then the vein, at each inter¬section, is mined out to a distance of about 9 m (30 ft ) above the track level. After the installation of an ore chute, scrams or intermediate drifts are driven in both directions along the vein. Mining then starts imme¬diately below the level bounding the upper limit of the stope. A cut varying between 3 and 4.2 m (10 and 14 ft) in depth and mined for a distance of 45.7 m (150 ft )along the strike is taken from the orepass in each direction (Fig. 1). In this mined-out void, the floor of the cut is equipped with 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) caps hitched into the wall with steel saddle hitches installed on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers. Double wood stringers, 152.4 x 152.4 mm (6 x 6 in.), are then installed on 1.2-m (4-ft) centers longitudinally down the length of the stope. Reinforc¬ing wire mesh is also placed, overlying each mat of timber. Directly above the stringers, stulls are installed from hanging wall to footwall to hold the timber in place during the sand-filling operation. Then a cement¬sand mixture in a ratio of about 1:10 weight is poured to a depth of about 2.4 m (8 ft). The entire cycle is then repeated down to the scram drift. Another variation of timbering is illustrated in Fig. 2. There is a vein width of approximately 5.5 m (18 ft) with the same unconsolidated ground conditions. The primary difference between handling this situation and the previously described undercut-and-fill method is that standard timbered sets are installed in each excavated stoping void rather than stulls. Once again the basic method is to work down the ore block from an upper timbered drift to a lower timbered drift. Cuts are taken from a timbered raise with a chute on the stope side. Each piece of ground excavated is essentially two sets high, 5.5 m (18 ft), by two sets wide, 5.5 m (18 ft), by the length of the cut along the strike of the vein. The timbered sets are 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m (8 x 8 x 8 ft). The net result is, therefore, two sets of timber on a top floor separated by doubled-up 76-mm (3-in.) lagging from

The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

Iron Mountain Mines, Inc., (IMMI) ore de- posits are located in the southeastern portion of the Klamath Mountains in the West Shasta copper/Zinc Mining District in Shasta County (Figure 1). The original massive sulfide ore deposits totaled 22,895,000 Mt (25 million st). The remaining ore deposits contain 12,875,000 Mt (14,183,000 st) of proven massive sulfides and 2,769,000 Mt (3,050,000 st) of proven gossan deposits. The addition of magnetite deposits and tailings (now marketable) brings the total of proven and probable reserves to 20,433,000 Mt (22,508,000 st). The massive sulfide ore bodies are generating a natural flow of acid mine water which has been slowly leaching minerals out of these deposits. This flow varies in volume, depending on rainfall, and contains variable concentrations of copper, zinc, iron and precious metals. This mine water has been treated for the past 50 years at the mine site to remove copper. The treatment process, utilizing scrap iron precipitation, continues at a production rate of approximately 54,430 Kg (120,000 pounds) of copper precipitate annually.

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) become more prevalent in the mining industry, new hazards of battery fire and explosion are emerging. Efforts must be taken to ensure that workers are safe from these new hazards, such as batteries undergoing thermal runaway in underground areas that may have explosive methane-air mixtures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated overpressures generated within a sealed battery enclosure filled with an explosive methane-air mixture and a single cell lithium-ion battery driven into thermal runaway using an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC). For both iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion cells, the explosion overpressures remained unchanged with varying percentages of methane concentration in the atmosphere surrounding the cell. It’s likely that the gases released from the battery undergoing thermal runaway caused an inert atmosphere within the sealed canister. The results from this study will help mining equipment manufacturers develop proper measures to keep miners safe while working with lithium-ion batteries in underground gassy mines

After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

"The flow field in a rotary kiln, used in an iron ore pelletizing process, was investigated using a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model. The model is isothermal, downscaled and simplified. The objective was to examine the possibility of capturing the unsteady motion of the flame seen in the real kiln. The results from the simulations were compared with recorded images of the real process. The results demonstrate the possibility of quickly getting an overview of the flow field in the kiln. The main, unsteady behavior of the flame was captured. The model may be used as a tool in the ongoing work of improving and optimizing the pelletizing process.IntroductionThe pelletizing process, in which the crude iron ore from a mine is upgraded into pellets, is a process involving large amounts of hot air flowing in complex geometries. Flow control is a crucial factor in this process to maintain high pellet quality. The rotary kiln is one of the last steps in the pelletizing process, and this is where the pellets are sintered to increase their strength and metallurgical properties. The kiln burner produces a flame that supplies the entire pelletizing process with the necessary heat.Kiln burner flames are large diffusion flames arising from a jet of fuel from the burner issuing into a concentric confining cylinder with a surrounding coflow of air, called secondary air. To enable combustion, the secondary air needs to be entrained into the fuel jet. This mixing of the fuel and air is the slowest step in the combustion process and therefore affects the efficiency of the combustion. The rate of entrainment depends on the momentum ratio between the burner jet and secondary air. The higher the momentum ratio, the faster the entrainment rate and, consequently, the faster is the fuel/air mixing.The kiln of interest in this study differs from kilns used in other industrial processes in both geometry and operating conditions. A distinguishing feature is the large amount of secondary air being induced through the kiln hood and then transported to earlier stages in the process as air or exhaust gas. The secondary air therefore has a substantial momentum, implying that the resulting flow field has a significant impact on the mixing and combustion process in general and the flame shape and stability as well as combustion efficiency in particular. A systematic study of the factors influencing the dynamics of the flow field in the kiln, neglecting the combustion, is therefore justified."

Liquid ion exchange is becoming more and more important in hydro-metallurgical processing and recovery of metals. The key to success for this process are reagents which have suitable operating characteristics. One of these important characteristics is a relatively fast phase separation rate in the extraction and stripping circuits, as this greatly affects the size of plant required. A test for measuring phase separation rate is needed to help evaluate liquid ion exchange reagents. Such "a test also would be useful for evaluating carrier solvents that are used for diluting the re-agents. In fact, one standard test method would be very desirable as it would provide a common basis for comparing reagents and sol-vents. The phase separation test described in this paper has been used successfully for several years with the copper reagent, LIX®64N. The test is set up for feed liquors containing low copper concentrations. For other types of systems, modifications in procedure probably would be necessary. However, this test and the associated apparatus could be the basis for a standard phase separation test.

The Gulf Coast States ranging from South Texas to Alabama contain vast resources of lignite ranging in energy content from about 4000 to 7000 Btu/lb (as-received) with sulfur content ranging from about 0.5 to 2 percent. Currently, the strip mining rate is about 35 million tons per year in Texas and essentially zero in the other Gulf Coast states. Estimates of future mining rates are as high as 310 million tons per year by the year 2000 with 240 being in Texas. In this paper, we examine the life cycle of the surface mineable lignice based on the most recent estimates of surface mine recoverable resources with two scenarios. The first indicates that a 310 million tpy rate could be sustained for only 15 years while the second scenario suggests that the 310 million tpy could be sustained for 25 to 30 years. If lignite resources are required beyond those that are surface mineable, the deep basin lignite will be developed. Five strategies for developing deep basin lignite are discussed.

The two most important influencers of cost-per-ton in an underground mining machine are its productivity (tons/hour) and its availability-utilization (hours/year). Operating cost and initial price have far less impact. This paper reviews a cost-per-ton sensitivity analysis for underground mining equipment and discusses benchmarks for measuring its performance. The conclusion is that miner-supplier partnerships and the Information Age are the two most significant trends in cost-per-ton reduction.
