The Bureau of Mines' Denver Research Center initiated a subsidence research program in 1978. The short ten goals of the program were to determine practical methods and equipment for measuring subsidence and demonstrate these methods by monitoring subsidence at several mines having mining, geologic and topographic variables typical of those encountered in the western United States. Data from the monitoring program would be supplied to cooperating mining companies and used by the Bureau to accomplish the long term objective of developing and validating subsidence prediction techniques applicable to mines in the West. Subsidence monitoring is being conducted at five mines in Colorado and Utah with substantially different mine plans, mining methods, depths of cover, and topography. The monitoring procedures used at each site are similar and include designing the monitoring network layout, installing the subsidence monuments, initial and periodic surveying of the monuments, and processing the survey data. The network layout, surveying methods, and types of monuments vary according to the conditions at the individual sites and the type of data being collected.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of the Fe2+/Fe3+-SO2 (FFS) anode reaction in the copper leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning circuit. The investigation revealed that six process variables, including anode type, Fe 21 concentration, current density, electrolyte temperature, degree of agitation, and manifold injection point were found to influence cell voltage and cell current efficiency. A 47% voltage reduction (0.8 versus 1.5 V) compared to conventional electrowinning with activated lead (ALE) anodes was achieved at a current density of 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) with an industrial electrolyte. Current efficiency was maintained above 90%, and S02 above the cell measured less than 1 ppm when activated carbon was used to assist the reduction of Fe" by S02 in the copper electrolyte. Solvent extraction tests showed that Alamine 336 is a stronger H2SO4 extractant than is needed to extract the excess acid produced by the FFS anode reaction.

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

This paper presents in detail the procedures followed and the results obtained in order to determine the stiffness parameters of the calcareous marls found in the lignite mines in Ptolemais, Northern Greece. Triaxial tests were performed on representative samples of the inner burden marl and the marl which underlies the lignite bearing series of the region. The tests were conducted under drained conditions, with controlled loading (including an unloading-reloading loop), while the axial strain was measured externally as well as with displacement transducers mounted directly on the specimen (Hall Effect sensors). The geotechnical parameters obtained (i.e., cohesion, angle of friction, stiffness modulus, stress-strain relationship), were subsequently used for simulating the triaxial testing with the Plaxis finite element software. Simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting material model can then be applied to modeling the mobility that is expressed during the excavation of the open pit mines.

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Scrapers benched down about 9 m and removed nearly 2.3 Mm of over-burden at pit A. About 1 Mm was placed in a 9-m lift on top of the high-wall at the head of the pit. The shape of particles has a significant effect on the shear strength and deformational characteristics of granular materials. Weathering can change the grain shapes. For example, more weathered sands tend to be rounder regardless of particle size. Particle shape analysis was performed on samples collected from the Questa mine rock piles, a debris flow and the pit alteration scar. In order to increase the validity of the particle shape analysis, 4 persons including 2 geologists and 2 mining engineers were involved in describing the particle shapes. The results of this analysis indicate that rock fragments in the collected samples are mainly subangular, subdiscoidal and subprismoidal. The sphericity and angularity of the rock fragments of the older analogs are similar to those of the rock piles. This suggests that short-term weathering (<100 years) has not noticeably changed the particle shapes at the test locations. Rock piles made of more angular particles are more stable compared to rock piles with rounded particles.

A small size quarrying activity (3 different quarries with an overall production in blocks less than 10.000 m3/year) has been exploiting for a long time the ?Tonalite? deposit of Adamello-Presanella. In 1967, given the outstanding natural beauty of the area, a natural park has been established with the aim of preserving environmental quality and, at the same time, of providing a sustainable development to the area. Because of the potential impacts of a mining activity in such a context, a specific study has been recently carried out in order to define if and how the quarries could co-exist with the park, beyond the ?administrative results? of a classic environmental impact assessment. The paper deals with the process that drove to the conclusion that the activities are not ?a priori? incompatible with the aims of the park. In the opinion of the authors, a responsible quarry management, which must take inspiration from the care given to environment by traditional alpine productive activities (e.g. the use of water, of wood, and of the stone itself), and take advantage of modern technologies in terms of emissions and safety, can be considered not only compatible with the protected area, but even able to positively contribute to the protection of the land and environment (Barisone et al., 2001). A series of specific prescriptions, which have been adopted by the Park Authorities after this study, are also discussed in the paper: only the definition of suitable spatial and temporal limits, the adoption of effective technical practices and a strict control are considered to be able to drive this ?exceptional? activity towards the final goal of real sustainability.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. To address this problem, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is the roof bolting machine. Field studies show that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that roof bolting machine operators would be exposed to, and it contributes significantly to the operators’ noise exposure. OMSHR has determined that the drill steel and chuck radiate a significant amount of noise during drilling. OMSHR and the Corry Rubber Corporation (CRC) have developed a bit isolator that breaks the steel-to-steel link between the drill bit and drill steel and a chuck isolator that breaks the mechanical connection between the drill steel and the chuck. This effectively reduces the noise radiated by the drill steel and chuck and in turn reduces the noise exposure of roof bolter operators. This paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling by 3.7 to 6.6 dB.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. High speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However it has been it has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years for various minerals. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two existing copper operations will be covered to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from the introduction of this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are covered and explained.

INTRODUCTION Construction is underway on a laboratory cavern 713 m below surface at the Soudan Mine, Tower-Soudan State Park, in northeastern Minnesota. The 13.9 in wide by 11.6 m high by 71.8 in long cavern will provide a laboratory space for basic research in physics, in which experiments can be conducted with greatly reduced interference from cosmic radiation. A first generation experiment, called the Soudan 1 detector, is currently operating in a converted drift 591 in below surface at the mine. The initial phase of the Soudan 2 detector will be an 1100-metric ton unit, which will occupy approximately a 19 m length of the cavern. Control and monitoring equipment will be in a prefabricated shop office enclosure erected in the cavern. The location and planned usage for the laboratory cavern present special excavation, lining, and outfitting requirements. Temperature and humidity control, a relatively clean dust-free environment, and a long service life are required. Low cost and risk to the owner were basic requirements due to the nature of the funding. The most common type of site selected to meet these two constraints is either an operational mine or a civil works facility such as a road tunnel. There are often serious problems for such laboratories because of ongoing operations such as blasting, hauling, etc. Most of these problems do not exist for the Soudan 2 laboratory because the mine is used as a historical site with regular tours only in the summer season. Caterpillar and Fortescue Metals Group have moved forward with the delivery, installation and support of a complete Cat MineStar System at Fortescue?s Solomon iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The complete technology suite was implemented for the first phase of Solomon, the 20 Mt/a (22 million stpy) Firetail manned mine, in October 2012. As part of an autonomous mining solution for phase two, the 40-Mt/a (44-million stpy) Kings Mine, eight Command for hauling Cat 793F CMD trucks were commissioned and commenced operations in the second quarter of 2013. The mine plan calls for a progressive ramp up to 45 autonomous trucks during the next several years. In addition, other Cat MineStar System capability sets, Fleet, Terrain, Detect and Health, are being used across the mobile equipment fleet, including support equipment and light vehicles. Working closely with Fortescue and its mining contractor, Leighton Contractors, Caterpillar and the Cat dealer in Western Australia, WesTrac, are providing a full solution for managing, operating and supporting Cat MineStar System and Command for hauling. The greenfield Solomon Mine has brought together the skilled team from Caterpillar, Fortescue, Leighton Contractors and WesTrac to deliver an efficient, cost effective autonomous mining solution.

The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The parameters affecting the adsorption of silver on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of cations and anions as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial silver concentration in the solution and other factors. The recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions was found to be not so effective as the case with gold reported earlier. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rather fast initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

A linear programming model with integer sequencing variables is developed to schedule limestone production for a quarry in Central Japan. The model is used to optimize raw material production from the quarry supplying limestone to cement, quick lime and aggregate plants. Typically, the mining in the quarry takes place in four to six different areas each area having 3 or 4 mining increments. Each mining increment contains different quality of limestone. The limestone production from the quarry is transported to the plants byway of 3 ore passes. Each plant requires a given quantity of limestone per period meeting certain quality constraints. This paper will describe development of the scheduling optimization model and how it is used to schedule production by period within the quarry to meet the capacity and blending requirements of the plants.

Subsidence induced innerburden shearing and stress fields, whether active or passive, frequently contribute to significant ground control failures in overlying seams. In this paper proven multi-seam technology is used on upper seams to forecast and quantify the magnitude and severity of damage and the increased mining risk due to interaction. Increased upper seam ground control problems are demonstrated using hazard mapping which provides a viable technique for utilizing damage predictions in design.

An open pit mining operation can be considered as a production system with at least two products: ore and overburden (waste). A primary mine planning task is to schedule the production of ore and waste over its life span subject to several technical and economic constraints to maximize some objective such as the overall profit from the operation. Two major constraints are (i) the feasible combinations of ore and waste productions and (ii) the limiting function for ore production as a function of mine life. The task in scheduling production and stripping ratio (ratio of waste to ore production) is to find an ore production curve below the upper bound function of ore production, and a stripping ratio curve within the feasible domain of ore production and overburden removal while maximizing the defined objective. Zn this paper, feasibility of developing computerized optimization models to perform such a scheduling process is explored. Two optimization models are proposed for the task. In the first approach, a linear programming (LP) model is employed and in the second, a dynamic programming procedure (DP) is outlined. In these models, in addition to the consideration of the two major constraints mentioned earlier, various other contributing factors such as interest rate, equipment purchase cost and installation schedule, operating cost, and equipment idle cost are incorporated. An example is provided to illustrate the LP model application.
