The advanced cryogenic treatment is a post-manufacturing metallurgical process that involves subjecting off-theshelf materials to extremely low temperatures, significantly improving wear resistance and reliability. These case studies explore whether the claims of Enrich Bits & Tools benefit metals and their specific in-field application to drill bits in the blasting industry. This paper reviews the application of the treatment to button drill bits for enhanced wear resistance in two operations. The first is a civil construction project with highly abrasive rock. To confirm the remarkable benefits of the treatment, a second case study was performed. This case study utilized measure-while-drilling technology in consistent rock characteristics to reduce variables in the field study.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. Reducing the contribution of heavy- and light-duty diesel-powered equipment to concentrations of aerosols and gases is essential to industry’s efforts to improve air quality in underground mining operations. The results of this study demonstrated a potential of control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and repowering existing systems with advanced power packages to reduce contributions of diesel-powered vehicles to concentrations of diesel aerosols and criteria gases in underground mines. The implementation of viable exhaust aftertreatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental in the underground mining industry securing a clean, economical and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

It's a pleasure to be included with this group. I am not here to sell my services, but rather to share with you some ideas and considerations on using environmental consultants. Environmental consultants have developed some problems as well as created new costs for companies that are as legitimate as engineering costs. Each day the mining industry is becoming more affected by the proliferation of environmental regulations and their interpretations by federal and state agencies. How does a modern mining company cope with all the demands for environmental consideration by regulatory agencies and special interest environmental groups-- yet produce a product and make a profit? One way is to make efficient use of environmental consultants. But, as everyone here knows, this approach has been fraught with seemingly inherent frustrations, difficulties, and much justified criticism.

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means of controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers built a unique physical model called the longwall instrumented aerodynamic model (LIAM). The LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel. It has an 8.94 by 4.88 m (29 by 16 ft) footprint with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob and mining machinery, and scaled to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

Salt cavities have been proven to be a suitable structure for underground storage of various matters in gas, liquid or solid form. Since the technique of underground storage was developed mainly through field experiences in solution mining, a wider use of solution cavities for storage of gaseous and solid matters requires evaluation of three basic rock mechanics problems; cavity instability, boundary rock failure and surface subsidence. Cavity instability is due to the non-linear long-term creep properties of the surrounding ground media which are sensitive to cavity pressure changes associated with the storage. The cavity boundary rock failure is caused by the loss of effective confining pressure to the boundary rock media in the process of storage of gaseous and solid matters. Surface subsidence is the final outcome of the stress envelope originated around a cavity, eventually reaching the ground surface. The rock mechanics processes of instability, failure and surface subsidence are explained by using various field examples in salt domes and bedded formations. Methods of solving the problems are discussed including stress relief, stress control and computer optimization of design.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

To determine the effect of flux crystal size on the production rate and strength of sinter, batch sintering tests were conducted on samples of both dolomite and limestone of various crystal sizes. In addition, calcination tests .were performed on the dolomite and Limestone to determine the effect of crystal size on calcination rate at various temperatures normally attained in sinter beds. The results indicate that flux crystal size does not affect sinter production rate or sinter strength.

"Gold-mine effluents are often characterized by high concentrations of copper, ammonia and cyanide derivatives (mostly cyanates and thiocyanates). While not acutely toxic to birds, this water can be acutely toxic to fishes and invertebrates. In many jurisdictions, the effluent requires further treatment in order to pass a mandatory requirement to be nonlethal to species like the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) or Daphnia magna. Using actual mine water, it has been demonstrated that aerated moving bed biofilm reactors will biodegrade the ammonia, cyanides, cyanates and thiocyanates, thereby removing the toxicity associated with these components. By removing copper by precipitation the water can be made to pass acute toxicity tests. Tests have demonstrated that the process is stable between 4 and 25°C, with no significant changes in the treated water composition. Once the biomass is acclimatized, the process is resistant to upsets and requires very little inputs except for phosphorus and air. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that an anoxic reactor can be added downstream of the aerated reactors to remove nitrates if required.IntroductionThis paper will demonstrate that gold-mine effluents, which are toxic to fishes and invertebrates, can be made nontoxic by using a combination of chemical precipitation and biological oxidation.The typical composition of gold-mine effluents will first be described. The applicable legislation will then be introduced, with its requirement that the treated effluent be nontoxic. The toxicity of a typical untreated effluent will then be confirmed, and the sources of the toxicity identified. After that, a number of toxicity reduction treatment methods will be presented, and the selected method will be described.The lab tests that confirmed the efficiency of the treatment method will be presented, with three phases of testing as the understanding of the process gradually improved. Toxicity test results showing that the water is nontoxic after treatment through the temperature range will be presented."

The general application of memory cutting technology to shearers is improving the intelligence of the working face, but it has its limitations. It is only suitable for conditions where the environment of coal seam is changing slowly. It compensates for the cutting height by changing the fuselage attitude, and frequently adjusts the height to control the learning cutting trajectory, but due to the problems of shearer control and height adjustment accuracy, it cannot adapt to and compensate for the change of cutting height in a timely manner, resulting in poor cutting accuracy. The thermal conductivity of rock surrounding the airway is one of the most important thermal properties for estimating strata heat transfer into the mine air and for designing the air-cooling strategies. Several laboratory methods are available for the determination of thermal conductivity; however, most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed for determining the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and used for calculating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of different sandstone specimens attains values between 2.37 and 2.59 W m− 1 °C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, are determined and highlighted in this study.

The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. A coal mine located in southern West Virginia recently set a world record for daily low-seam coal production using a Cat automated longwall plow system. In a 24-hour period on April 10 and 11, 2014, the Pinnacle Mine longwall produced 32,411 t (35,724 st) from the Virginia Pocahontas No. 3 Seam, in a seam height of just 1.42 m (56 in.) along the 298-m (980-ft) longwall face. The Pinnacle Mine, located near the town of Pineville and owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., an international mining and resource company, operates a Cat Gleithobel GH1600 Longwall Plow System. A previous record was set by this system at Pinnacle in August, 2012 when 29,423 t (32,430 st) were mined in a 24-hour period. The record was set by the same system, mining its second panel after a comprehensive rebuild was performed by Carter Machinery, the Cat Dealer in that area. The rebuild encompassed a complete rebuild of the headgate and tailgate armored face conveyor (AFC) drive, the headgate and tailgate special AFC pans, the stageloader drives and return end, the complete crusher and all gearboxes for the plow, AFC and stageloader. Carter acquired the rights to sales and aftermarket support associated with the former Bucyrus mining products, both surface and underground, in 2013. ?Supporting and rebuilding a longwall plow system was a new experience for the Carter service team,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Sales and Support Division. ?However, given the record production results attained by the rebuilt system at Pinnacle, it?s obvious that they are up to the challenge of supporting the underground product lines at the same high standards and quality level that they have been delivering for many years on the traditional Cat surface mining products.? Tom Bluth, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Products Division, said, ?Caterpillar congratulates the Pinnacle team for this great achievement. Without their efforts and dedication this record would not have been possible. To safely deliver that kind of output from such a thin seam is remarkable. We have been privileged to work alongside their team to demonstrate the capabilities of Cat longwall mining technology. ?

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a room-and-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the U.S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. But the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining-industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing over-sprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99 percent and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores, such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Flotation of metal sulfide ores has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. It is the relative technical/economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals that has been a major driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply/demand of metals over this 50 year period. It is estimated that 1.6 billion tons of feed sulfide ores are processed each year in the free world based on the froth flotation process, Klimpel (1987) and the manufacture/use of associated chemical reagents is a major portion of the 1.5 billion dollars (U.S.) free world mining chemicals business, Klimpel (1988b). The use of froth flotation appears to be increasing partially due to the ever decreasing feed grades and liberation sizes of the feed minerals. Froth flotation has shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a variety of equipment configurations. Such operations exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the widely used mechanical flotation cell is scalable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required -- pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants -- are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very ample. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic sources having suitable-grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 987 were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process-related industries. In addition, the industrial-scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully on an industrial scale for many years. Thus the industrial process of froth flotation, especially as applied to the recovery of sulfide minerals, poses a dilemma: such a process is widely used, economic, versatile, forgiving, etc. and yet is still not very well understood in a mechanistic sense leading to prediction of results from fundamentals even after 50 years of usage. Primary autogenous grinding has been in general use for somewhat over 20 years. During this period there have been many highly successful plants built on this principle, while some others have had problems such as: 1. Not performing as predicted from test work. 2. Highly fluctuating tonnage rates. 3. Mechanical problems. 4. High liner wear. Many of the problems with commercial autogenous mills have resulted from improper sampling and testing of the ore during the development period. It is recognized that the fully autogenous mill is very sensitive to any changes in grindability which may occur in the feed to such a mill. The semi-autogenous mill is somewhat less sensitive, but large swings in grindability of the feed require adjustment of ball charge and this cannot be easily accomplished in a short period of time.

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)
