In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

The concept of mobile crushers is not new. Since their introduction about twenty-five years ago, mobile crushers have continued to gain widespread attention. Mobile crushers reduce minerals in the open pit mine to sizes which can be transported by belt conveyors thereby reducing or eliminating the need for truck haulage. Truck haulage is costly, often representing as much as 50% of the total mining cost. More than 80% of the cost of truck haulage is for fuel and lubricants, tire replacements, and operators' wages, and it can be anticipated that the cost of these items will continue to increase at a steady pace. Compared to truck haulage, transportation by belt conveyor is more energy-efficient, less labor-intensive, and less subject to inflation. Therefore, mobile crushers, used in conjunction with belt conveyor systems, offer one of the most effective available methods of reducing energy consumption and mining costs,

In this study, the conditions of raw materials and fuels were simulated for Bayan Obo iron ore concentrate by adding pure calcium fluoride (CaF2) in various concentrations to Australian iron ore. The mechanism by which the fluorine (F) content of the lattice influenced the reduction swelling properties of the iron ore briquettes during various stages of the reduction process was investigated. The results provide insight into the mechanism governing the reduction swelling process in Bayan Obo ore briquettes, which could be used to direct real?world production practices, particularly those related to the rational utilization of Bayan Obo ore resources.

"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

Dewatering of the fine clean coal fraction, - 28 mesh (595 microns) represents one of the most difficult and costly separations in typical plant circuits. Since 1969, the Screen Bowl Centrifuge has offered an economical alternative to filtration/thermal dryer combinations. The performance of Screen Bowl Centrifuges has been continuously modified and improved to dewater not only coarser coals, but also today's variety of ultrafine material. Actual test comparisons with alternative methods show the Screen Bowl Centrifuge to be most cost effective and efficient when all factors are considered.

During the past several years, more frequent reference to Wollastonite has appeared in print, both in this country and abroad. The reason for this is the apparent growing interest in this mineral as it approaches commercial maturity. Twelve years ago, wollastonite was available in only limited commercial quantity. In 1933, a deposit in California was worked for a short time to provide a calcium silicate raw .material for the manufacture of mineral wool* It was not until the spring of 1953 that Cabot Corporation put into operation a modem commercial plant to produce this material in a variety of grades. These grades covered both a range of particle size and of particle shape. At that time, applications for wollastonite were largely speculative, although a few commercial applications in glass frits and welding fluxes did exist, For all practical purposes, it was a new material for which few commercial uses had been fully proven.

During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d'Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex multiple seam mining geometries there has been an increased demand for higher design standards in ground control safety and stability within the mining industry. For the past 20 years, NIOSH has developed and validated a number of software tools to aid in the development of safer mining environments with respect to improved roof support performance, pillar stability in longwall and room and pillar mines, formation characterization, the prediction of roof conditions, etc. These tools are available, free of charge, to the mining industry as stand-alone software packages. As cloud computing gains momentum, there is a definite need to develop internet based applications for mine design that would be easily accessible to any user at any time, including underground where permitted. This paper introduces a new web-based product which will allow for faster and easier access to existing ground control designs, on-the-fly calculations in the field as needed, and instant online collaboration between operations personnel and planning engineers. It is expected that the industry will rapidly embrace this product and, as it is common with all new innovative technologies, it will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. INTRODUCTION Since its release to the public in the late 1980's, the World Wide Web has drastically changed from a collection of static HTML web pages to a dynamic vehicle driving e-commerce, collaborative working relationships, and the mass distribution of information and media (Offutt, 2002). Recent developments in Internet capabilities, such as Cloud Computing and Software as a Service, have begun a migration away from desktop-based software in adoption of the web application (Hayes, 2008). Web applications, or web apps, are designed on the client-server architecture paradigm in which the client, or user, can interact with an application through web browsers without disrupting or installing software on potentially thousands of client computers (Nations, 2015). Currently, web-based software applications are being utilized in all business sectors and markets from commerce, finance, media, and even engineering. In fact, the Alabama Department of Transportation has developed a web-based geotechnical geographical information system (GeoGIS) for the management of and access to geotechnical and subsurface data for transportation projects across the state (Graettinger, et al., 2001). Similarly, Dyno Noble has developed a service application for explosive engineers. The Explosives Engineers' Guide application equips users with a full range of product information as well as on-demand blasting calculations for powder factor, airblast prediction, ground vibration, etc. Through the incorporation of a web server, one is able to utilize the functionality of the desktop-based software through a web browser located on any personal computer, tablet, or Smartphone (Vaughan-Nichols, 2002)."

Although the Sagasca deposit has been known for 76 years, the property was never put into successful operation because of various adverse factors including low market price for copper, legal entanglements, unsuccessful financial arrangements, and an inadequate metallurgical process. Late in 1963, Continental Copper & Steel Industries, Inc., obtained legal control of this property. Since that time there has been a concentrated effort to complete the necessary mine appraisal, process development, and engineering design, and to solve the legal and financial problems to bring this property into production.

It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the sensitivity of three selected input parameters in the operational control of continuous bottom fed thickeners used for the treatment of coal refuse slurries. The three variable parameters were "Feed Flow Rate," "Feed pH," and "Feed Solids Concentration." These three input parameters were studied under three cationic-anionic polymeric conditions. For each polymeric condition, two mathematical models were developed, one for overflow response and the other for underflow response. The combination polymers produced the best quality of overflow and underflow. For this polymeric condition, change in the feed solids concentration was the most sensitive factor in the maintenance of the overflow quality, and the feed pH was the most sensitive factor for the maintenance of underflow quality. The mathematical models generated a set of plots that would allow an operator to control and/or adjust any of the three variables to achieve optimum conditions.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. For many years, pulverized coal (PC) boilers in utility power plants have been the dominant market for domestic coal. Today, two new coal utilization technologies challenge the PC boiler's dominance. Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) and "coal gasification/combined cycle" (GCC) stand on the verge of commercial demonstration in the utility environment at a scale of 100 MW. Developed over the past decade, these technologies respond to the demands for cleaner ways to burn coal and for more flexibility in fuel supply. In the near term, these are the "clean coal" technologies most likely to have a significant impact, because they are ready for commercial application. As for environmental acceptability, consider that just a few years ago one of the environmental slogans was "no coal in California." Indeed, the only large quantities of coal above ground in California at that time were in transit on the way to Asia. Today, thanks to new technology, we can point to two operational coal-burning plants in California and one in the works: * Cool Water GCC demonstration plant (100 MW) * California Portland Cement AFBC commercial cogeneration, near Riverside (190 000 lb/hr steam) * Energy Factors AFBC commercial cogeneration at Stockton, to be operational 1988 (44 MW)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION History The most striking feature of mining in the United States has been the infrequent use of longwall systems. This system, which accounts for the majority of coal production in Europe, Japan, and other countries, is only recently growing out of its infancy in the mining of normal coal seams and is still untried in the mining of thick coal seams in the US. Its use in the mining of metal and nonmetal ore bodies has been virtually ig¬nored, except for isolated instances in trona, copper, and uranium. Longwall mining is believed to have originated in Shropshire, England, towards the end of the 17th cen¬tury (Laird, 1973). Although the method used would be considered primitive by today's standards, many of the basic concepts have remained unchanged. Longwall mining of coal in the US was first introduced before the turn of the century, but it never gained acceptance as it did in Europe. Historically, longwalling was a cyclic method where a single cut of coal was removed from the face on the producing shift each day, and the work of building stone packs in the gob and manually moving roof support was completed on the off shifts. Due to the amount of dead work, productivity was extremely low. In Europe, however, longwall methods were required despite the high costs involved, because only by this method could coal under heavy depth be mined with any reasonable degree of recovery. Reserves of coal lying under shallow cover, and therefore minable by room¬and-pillar methods, were long ago inadequate to supply most of Europe's coal requirements. In the US coal min¬ing has historically proceeded laterally with the new mines in virgin areas to replace old mines; in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries, mining must proceed downward to greater depths. The depth of cover for most coal operations in the US is shallow, i.e., 61 to 305 m (200 to 1000 ft). This, combined with large reserves, has made room-and-pillar methods almost universally applicable. However, longwall systems were tried around the turn of the century. Whenever used, it was frequently noted that the opera¬tion was under the direction of men with foreign ex¬perience and was tried under ideal conditions. Some of the mines that were using longwall or had tried longwall prior to 1910 were the Radiant mine, CO; Vinton Coal Co., PA; Cambria Steel Co., Johnstown, PA; Grundy County and Spring Valley, IL; and unnamed mines in Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Kansas. As late as 1961, there was one circular longwall in operation at Centerville, IA. The first modern-day op¬eration to take advantage of European technology and longwall methods was Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine near Price, UT. Due to deep cover and extremely poor roof conditions, combined with a need for in¬creased production, Kaiser management decided a new method was required and turned to longwall in 1961. The first longwall consisted of an Anderson Mavor shearer loader, British Jeffrey-Diamond conveying equip¬ment, and Dowty roof supports with a capacity made up of two and three 27-t (30-st) capacity props. After nor¬mal start-up problems, this unit averaged over 454 t (500 st) per shift (White and Palacios, 1976). During and after World War II, technology in hy¬draulics and controls had advanced to the point that self-advancing supports and hydraulic props were being developed. In 1960 only I % of West German produc¬tion was from mechanized longwall faces. This in¬creased to 37% in 1970 and 63% in 1973 (Kohlgruber, 1974). In 1976 there were 246 coal mines operating in the United Kingdom. Although this is only 50% of those operating ten years ago, the production has increased 42%, mainly through improvements in longwall equipment and methods (Hunter, 1976). In France and other European countries, the devel¬opment of longwall mechanization has been similar in seams up to 2.44 m (8 ft) thick. In seams that exceed 9.14 m (30 ft), a variety of longwall caving has been developed for coal seams with dips of 0 to 1.6 rad (0 to 90°). Those with the greatest success will be discussed later. As noted, the development of longwall mining to its present state of the art has mainly taken place since World War II with substantial gains in the last ten years. Mechanized longwall has been the result of several re¬lated major innovations (Jackson, 1975) 1) Development of the flexible armored face con¬veyor which can be installed along the face and moved forward without disassembly. 2) Development of face machines such as single and double drum shearer and coal plows which operate in conjunction with the armored conveyors. 3) Development of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports which now include chocks, chock shields, and shields. 4) Reliance of caving of the immediate roof based on proper planning and development. 5) Use of pneumatic slowing to enable extraction below overbuilt areas. The most recent developments in the mining of coal by longwall in the US include the introduction of shield supports at Kaiser's York Canyon mine in New Mexico, single-entry longwall development at Kaiser's Sunnyside mine, and Mid-Continent's advancing longwall system in Colorado. Metal and nonmetal longwall systems in the US have included the mining of copper at White Pine, MI; uranium in Utah and New Mexico, and trona in Wyoming.

The precise definition of an ultimate or economic pit has, over the years, received much attention in the literature on the subject of mine planning. Unfortunately, relatively little has been published in the area of pit sequencing and scheduling--an aspect which is typically of much greater economic significance both during the life of a mining operation, as well as in the evaluation of an exploration project. This paper discusses an overall mine planning methodology with emphasis on the design of an optimal sequence of pit expansions or phases. Although the concepts given are not new, it is hoped that some practical suggestions will be made. The paper will also describe graphical techniques which have been found useful in comparing the merits and impacts of alternate planning strategies and production schedules.

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.
