Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world's largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

Changes in our energy, national security, and commerce needs have necessitated identification of new sources of minerals, such as rare earths, lithium, copper, silver, aluminum, titanium, and the minerals on the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) list of critical minerals (USGS, 2022). With the need to domestically produce these minerals, more mining will be required within the U.S. Some of these critical minerals deposit with naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), therefore, mining these minerals may concentrate NORM to the point that some states may require licensing and radiation protection programs. NORM is not regulated by the Federal government; it is regulated by the individual states. Consequently, overall national state of NORM regulation is chaotic with each individual state either choosing to regulate or not regulate NORM, and, if a state chooses to regulate NORM, then that state develops its own unique regulations. Further complicating the regulatory environment, states utilize a wide variety of strategies for regulating NORM, which sometimes results in inappropriate regulations, inconsistencies with specific radionuclides that are regulated, and inconsistencies with specific NORM types that are regulated. This paper will review the nature of NORM regulations, identify regulatory traps, and provide general guidance for identifying NORM and potentially avoiding regulatory jeopardy. Because of the chaotic nature of NORM regulations nationally, seeking guidance from qualified professionals with relevant expertise is recommended. Also, contacting the appropriate regulatory agency to gain a complete understanding of the NORM regulatory environment is useful for maintaining compliance.

The Electroslurry TM electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes: The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, Electroslurry TM electrowinning and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

The fly ash from coal combustion often has a high unburned-carbon content. This can make it unusable as a cement admixture, which is the major fly ash utilization market. As a result, high-carbon fly ashes currently disposed of by landfilling, at sometimes considerable expense. In this paper, the use of froth flotation to remove the unburned carbon from fly ash is described. Three different fly ashes were studied, which had Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) values of 6.79, 6.90, and 11.11 %. It was found that the use of an alkanolamide/oil mixture as a froth-conditioning reagent could greatly reduce the amount of collector needed, by increasing the affinity of the collector for oxidized carbonaceous surfaces. For each of the three fly ashes, froth flotation reduced the LOI of the ash to less than 2% which is well below the ASTM specification of no ' more than 6.0% LOI for Class F fly ash. Increasing carbon content of the ash tended to increase the quantities of reagents needed in flotation.

Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts in northern Chile the soils often contain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potassium, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and triggers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geo-membrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more differential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will undergo a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geo-membrane with suitable flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load conditions to tolerate the predicted settlement. (This paper was previously published for Randol Gold Forum 1996 [Ref. 6]).

This paper reviews the procedure used to quantify the conveyor frictional resistance on a 3.9 km (2.4 mile) long overland conveyor belt. Field torque measurements of the three drives were used to help fine tune a computer simulation of the conveyor. This enabled the prediction of the effect on various conveyor components that cold temperatures will have on increasing the throughput tonnage.

For at least five decades, a plume containing acidic metal-bearing water has been moving through the shallow alluvial aquifer along Pinal Creek in the Globe-Miami area. Two chemical facies of water are distinguished in the alluvial aquifer: (1) a metal-rich acidic plume with gram per liter concentrations of metals (primarily iron) and pH values between 3 and 5 and (2) neutralized water with a pH greater than 5, low concentrations of metals, and high concentrations of sulfate and manganese. Historically, the acid plume has moved through the aquifer at an average velocity of 0.6 m/day, ten times slower than the average pore velocity of groundwater in the aquifer calculated using the Darcy equation. The rate of migration of the metal-rich plume is retarded by pH-dependent chemical reactions between acid water and the aquifer matrix. As acid water is neutralized by reaction with calcite, rising pH conditions in- crease the oxidation rate of iron and decrease its solubility resulting in the precipitation of ferric hydroxides. The formation of ferric hydroxides is a proton releasing reaction which main- tains acidic conditions. The acidit of the plume and the neutralization capacity of tKe aquifer are best assessed in terms of the iron content of the water and not the hydrogen ion activity computed from pH measurements. The parameters controlling plume migration are: (1) the calcite content of the aquifer (2) the iron acidity of plume water, and (3) the rates of acid neutralization and ferrous iron oxidation. A numerical solute transport and reaction model based on the concept of iron acidity effectively simulates the historical development of acidic conditions, predicts the behavior of the plume, and was used as a management tool to identify the most efficient and cost effective remedial strategy.

"According to research presently being conducted on selective lithium recovery in seawater, inorganic adsorbents with high selectivity and capacity for capturing lithium ions from liquid lithium resources are called lithium ion-sieves (LISs). Their low toxicity, low cost and high chemical stability make LISs suitable for lithium recovery from seawater. In the present study, the ultrathin LMO nanofibers with controlled diameter were successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique with a hypothesis that greater aspect ratio (i.e., smaller diameter) would lead to the enhanced recovery of lithium ion from seawater. Design of Experiment (DOE) and dimensionless analysis were performed to systematically optimize the diameter and morphology of nanofibers. Several complementary techniques including FE-SEM and XRD were used to evaluate the physical/physicochemical properties of the nanofibers. Lastly, the lithium ion recovery was tested for the nanofibers with different physical properties using lithium ion solution. INTRODUCTION Demand for lithium resources is increasing in many industries across the world.1-2 However, the conventional resources for lithium is very limited, and it even gets worse to secure the resources due to low grade and/or complexity of feed materials. Much effort has been, therefore, devoted to obtaining lithium from aqueous lithium resources. Several methods such as solar evaporation3-4, co-precipitation5, and solvent extraction6 have been proposed for recovering lithium from an aqueous lithium source, but there are limitations on its use; It takes a very long time or conditions such as temperature, pH and Mg/Li ratio are severe. Lithium ion-sieve (LIS) materials are considered as a good lithium adsorbent because of their unique chemical structure that can selectively separate lithium ion from brine and seawater.7- 10 Furthermore, their low toxicity, low cost, and high chemical stability make LIS suitable for lithium recovery from aqueous lithium resources. Spinel hydrous manganese oxide (HMn2O4) derived from spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) after topotactically extracting lithium from the spinel structure by acid treatment is most widely investigated LIS.10, LIS materials have been actively studied in various forms for easy handling and high efficiency (i.e. membrane11,12, foam13-14, granular15,16). Among them, the 1-D nanostructure LIS with high specific surface area is excellent in efficiency.9 In this study, we present the part of our recently submitted work17. Specifically, we fabricated systemically lithium manganese oxide nanofibers with different diameter as a lithium ion adsorbent using electrospinning technique through design of experiment (DOE). Enhanced lithium ion adsorption properties of the HMn2O4 nanofibers with different diameter were investigated in lithium liquid resources."

When paraffinic gases (ethane, propane, butane) are used as the gas phase in flotation systems, the initial rate of flotation and recovery are generally increased as compared with air. The mechanism of the effect of paraffinic gases in flotation was studied and it was shown that they co-adsorb with the collector ions on the mineral-aqueous solution interface. The effect of this co-adsorption was interpreted in terms of apparent increase of the effective chain length of the collector by the co-adsorbed gas. Adsorption densities, contact angles and flotation behaviour were studied on the following systems: a) Quartz - dodecyl ammonium chloride - ethane and propane b) Calcite - sodium oleate - propane and butane. The positive effect of the co-adsorbed gases is a maximum at low collector concentrations or where critical conditions for flotation with air prevail.

The Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential. A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch Joint Venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer gas studies, as well as for studies in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources have previously been demonstrated in mines, but this new work details the development and testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds that can be used in passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed, which are PMCH, PECH and PMCP. The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180 day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in understanding complicated ventilation circuits, flow through gob, and leakage. INTRODUCTION The use tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various research projects being perform with Sulfur Hexafluoride (????6) in the past. Perfluorocarbon tracers (PFTs) however are relatively new compared to ????6, which is proven to be useful in ventilation and air modeling experiments along with other PFTs (Watson, Wilke, Dietz, Heiser, & Kalb, 2007). These liquid tracers are characterized by low background presence in air, inert behavior with other gases, high detectability with a gas chromatograph and low toxicity. A design was proposed called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), which initially introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory to meet those requirements. The PPRV works by allowing the gaseous form of the tracer to diffuse through the permeable silicone stopper and evaporate into the open air on the other side. The PFTs inside the vessels are injected as a liquid but instantly begin to convert to their gaseous phases at room temperature due to high vapor pressures (Zhang, H., Cloud, A.,2006). Previous studies have detailed how release rates change based on plug thickness across various temperatures (Jong et al., 2015), but not on the release rate stability based on temperature across multiple tracers. For use in underground mines passive release sources need to be durable, be simple to manufacture, have customizable and reliable release rates as well as a long operating life. The PPRV vessel provides a steady release of tracer gas that is essential for long term passive release experiments, making it a viable vessel for the PFTs being tested. The PPRV design also allows for vessels to be bundled together to achieve release rates at detectable levels and allows for the capability to run ventilation surveys with multiple tracers simultaneously. The ability to conduct ventilation surveys with multiple tracers using the PPRV bundling design and detection of the PFTs makes testing the tracers and design together a promising potential for complex and long term mine ventilations studies."

LKAB's ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of super-grade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. Until 1978 the approximate assay was 71.2 % Fe and 0.45 % SiO2. Since then the assays have been improved by process modifications to approximately 71.5 % Fe and 0.20 % SiO2. Scope exists for still further improvement. In recent years the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.6 % Fe and 0.30 % SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. The Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high-purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1 %.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual's carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man's best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don't need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. "BACKGROUND The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March, 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to begin mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August, 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterwards three rescue team members. An MSHA report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008). An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools; selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, a minimum program requirement is capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses. The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (1, 2, 3). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two-dimensions, for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three-dimensions. This technique involves a dual node – dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now are used in combination. Estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale are possible (4). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

The northern spur of the Bakhuis Mountains contains bauxite deposits on a dissected planation level, a region formerly indicated as the Adampada-Kabalebo area. Iron-rich laterites are ubiquitous on all more or less flat and horizontal to moderately sloping interfluves and planation levels. The known aluminous laterites and bauxites are restricted to those laterites that have relatively leucocratic and silica-poor parent rocks. The whole area is underlain by high-metamorphic Precambrian. In the northern half of the Guiana Shield at least four Cainozoic planation levels can be distinguished. The bauxite and aluminous laterite deposits are related to the oldest, Early Tertiary level. These deposits, occupying the highest positions in the present day landscape, show the destructive influence of post-laterite weathering, erosion and denud- ation; they are erosion remnants and as such are of irregular thickness, grade and shape. Consequently, exact mineable tonnages can only be determined after intensive and detailed sampling and evaluation, taking into account the latest technical and economic parameters. The bauxite potential of the region is negatively influ- enced by the complicated uplift history of the Bakhuis horst, and positively by the presence of suitable parent rock and possibly more than one phase of bauxitization.

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

Safety of mine ramps begins with an analysis of stress that almost certainly must be done numerically to take into account ramp geometry, route geology, rock properties, and pre-ramp stresses. The popular finite element method serves analysis purposes quite well. As a practical matter several obstacles to implementation need to be addressed including collection of rock and joint properties along the proposed ramp route, selection of ramp type, and specification of cross-section shape, size, and route grade. Additionally, stresses along the proposed route must be specified, preferably from in situ measurements. One need not be an expert in numerical methods to proceed to ramp design, although a background in mechanics of materials and rock mechanics is essential, and a first course in numerical methods is quite helpful. The necessary software is easily brought to the design task, more accurately, to the task of design evaluation. This software also addresses other important mine design problems including design of safe (1) main entries in stratified ground, (2) barrier pillars, (3) bleeder entries, (4) inter-panel barrier pillars, (5) room and pillar mines, (6) shafts, and (7) “tunnels” (Pariseau 2022).
