Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

"Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in deep unmineable coal seams can enhance coalbed methane (CBM) recovery as well as effectively and permanently store the CO2. Enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery and CO2 storage capacity can be improved by altering injection parameters including the injection well locations, number of injection wells, and the time and rate of the injection. A sensitivity study was performed with sixteen different injection scenarios on a coalbed methane field in Buchanan County, Virginia to understand the influence of the injection parameters on methane production, CO2 storage and the extent of the CO2 plume. History matching was done for the gas and water production period prior to injection based on field data from an active US Department of Energy funded pilot project. INTRODUCTION The coal structure is a combination of the coal matrix and cleats. In a CBM reservoir, the methane (CH4) is stored in the matrix under adsorption properties, not as a free gas. During CH4 production, the reservoir pressure is reduced and gas is released from the surface of the coal, diffuses through the matrix and transmits to fractures (man-made or natural) via the cleat network. Fractures and cleats are the major parameters that influence gas flow capacity because deliverability of the CH4 to the production well is controlled by the cleat permeability. As gas production continues over time, CH4 desorbs from coal, and coal matrix volume starts to decrease. This volume decrease in the matrix opens up the cleats, matrix shrinkage, which leads to a permeability increase. Several emprical (Harpalani and Schraufnagel 1990a, 1990b; Harpalani and Chen 1995, 1997; Harpalani and Mitra 2010; Pan et al. 2010; Liu et al. 2012; Mitra et al. 2012) and analytical (Palmer 2009; Liu and Harpalani 2013) studies have reported this relationship between pressure and permeability. Those studies showed that permeability is an important parameter in CH4 production performance. Furthermore, during gas production, water is produced through the cleat system as well, therefore gas-water relative permeability must be also considered in evaluating production performance (Gash et al., 1991). In the CO2 injection scenario the opposite occurs because CO2 has a higher adsorption affinity than CH4. CO2 replaces CH4 in the matrix of the coal and increases the volume of the coal matrix, matrix swelling, and results in a permeability decrease. Harpalani and Mitra (2010) concluded in their experimental study that swelling of the coal matrix due to the CO2 injection is two to three times more than the sorption of CH4, resulting in large permeability changes during CO2 injection."

The coal industry in the United States has undergone significant economic changes during the past six years. The price of coal remained relatively constant from 1950 to 1969 (See Figures 1 and 2). Steam coal prices tripled and metallurgical coal prices doubled from 1969 to 1974. This price structure has created a new economic environment for coal preparation. Contributing factors to these price trends include: ? Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 ? Mid-East oil embargo of 1973 ? United Mine Workers of America contract agreements ? Productivity decrease (tons per man-day basis) ? Environmental Protection Agency regulations The increased value of coal justifies additional capital investment in cleaning facilities to optimize yield. Current trends include recovery of existing slurry ponds and recleaning of refuse. Coal preparation plant product yield and quality must be evaluated in terms of the amount of capital expended and cost of operation. Therefore, it is advantageous to optimize the plant product based on clean coal selling price and rate of return on investment.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. An airborne dust cloud is an ensemble of particles of varied size, density, shape and states of aggregation. An understanding and quantifying of the dispersion and deposition of the dust generated in mines is essential to the development of measures for reducing worker exposure to dust. In coal mining, the major portion of the dust is generated during the cutting of coal using either a shearer or a continuous miner. The major phenomenon affecting ambient concentration is the deposition of dust. Particle deposition may take place due to the effect of gravitational, inertial, electrostatic, and thermal forces, and mechanisms such as Brownian and eddy diffusion, and inertial impaction. The three major mechanisms of deposition in turbulent flow in mines are diffusion (Brownian and eddy), sedimentation and inertial impaction. The mechanisms determining particle deposition are size dependent.

Cyanide (CN) is used to recover gold from its ores in many locations worldwide. In spite of the established history of gold mining in Alaska, modern cyanidation methods have been used at only one location, the Ryan Lode Mine at Ester Dome, near Fairbanks. Ore was processed by heap leaching between 1987 and 1989, when permitting issues caused operations to be terminated. Those issues have since been resolved, and plans to reopen the mine are currently being discussed. Plans are also proceeding to develop several other ore deposits in the state, all of which include the use of cyanide for gold recovery [6]. Since tailings and effluent water produced from these mines will require treatment, it is important to develop detoxification methods suitable for the Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions found in Alaska. Several methods exist for removing cyanide from mining wastewater. However, most industrial users prefer chemical treatment systems, and typically use sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, or sulfur dioxide/air/copper to oxidize free and complexed cyanides [9]. Biological treatment has been used successfully at two sites in the United States [30,32] and field tested at several others [20,27,28]. In addition, one mine uses "natural processes", which include natural oxidation, photodegradation, and degradation by naturally occurring bacteria [33].

The chemical states and ions interaction were significant interest to understanding columbite mineral/acid solution interface dissolution and reaction. The present research work was focus to explore the specific cations ( Nb5+, Fe2+, Fe3+) distribution near the ferrocolumbite mineral/acid solution interface, and determine these cations leaching sequence in sulfuric acid solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy had the potential to provide detailed dissolution information by resolving chemical state and ion distribution of ferrocolumbite during sulfuric acid leaching process. The binding energy decreased in sequence as Nb5+- O < Fe2+- O < Fe3+- O, and increased in sequence as Fe3+- SO4 < Fe2+- SO4 < Nb5+- SO4 which revealed Nb in ferrocolumbite mineral more easily leached comparing to Fe. The ratio of Fe2+- O/Fe3+-O on leaching residue decreased, and Fe2+- SO4/Fe3+-SO4 ratio increased as sulfuric acid contraction increasing suggested that the Fe2+ oxidized to Fe3+ and released Nb from mineral and dissolved into leaching solution. The ratio of Nb/Fe was lower 0.07 with sulfuric acid contraction increasing which meant Nb dissolution promoted by oxidation of iron. The dissolution mechanism of Fe element in ferrocolumbite mineral was Fe2+- O broken and generated Fe2+. Fe2+ was oxidized to Fe3+ in concentrated sulfuric acid leaching solution. The dissolution mechanism of Nb in ferrocolumbite was that Nb5+- O was directly digested by H+, and the released Nb5+ complex with SO4 2− ion formed cation − anion pairs. The coordination of formation Nb5+- SO4 pairs and oxidation Fe2+ in mineral could promote ferrocolumbite dissolution.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more Ti02 than the formula FeTiO3 would indicate, and some Fe203. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates.(l) The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amorphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide, Other studies (2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal processes,(3, 4, 5) Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering, (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived, (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions.

Pig iron nuggets were produced in a laboratory scale furnace at Michigan Technological University. These nuggets are produced from pellets consisting of a mixture of iron oxide, coal, flux, and a binder, which are heated to 1450°C.These pellets then self-reduce to produce a solid, high-density, highly metallized (96.5% Fe) pig iron. During the nugget production process, a separate slag phase forms that cleanly separates from the metal. The physical and chemical properties of the pig iron nuggets are similar to pig iron produced by blast furnaces, which is distinct from Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Selenium is widely present in the environment at usually low concentration. It is mostly present in the environment at higher oxidation states, i.e., as selenites and selenates (+4 and +6 oxidation states respectively). It is rarely present as selenides (-2 oxidation state) and almost never found as the element (0 oxidation state). Selenites and selenates are generally soluble in water, as such they cannot easily be removed from water by precipitation. Selenites can form insoluble surface complexes with metal oxides such as ferric hydrous oxide and manganese hydroxide, and can therefore be removed that way. However, it is not so common to find selenites in natural environments as it will quickly oxidize to selenate in aerobic conditions. Elemental selenium can also be produced from selenites or selenates by using a reduction process; the end product is a colloid that can be destabilized to be removed from water using the right chemistry. Because of their toxicity, selenides need to be handled with care, and if present, it can form insoluble metal salts or, at low pH, be emitted as H2Se, a noxious and highly toxic gas. The most favorable selenium forms for its removal are therefore selenite and elemental selenium. Organo-selenium species play a crucial part in understanding selenium toxicity. There are a great number of these species. Basically, any organic species that contains sulfur has an equivalent that contains selenium. Of particular interest is the substitution of sulfur by selenium in the two sulfur-bearing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, resulting in selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Methylseleninic acid (CH3SeO2H) is another organo-selenium specie which has been detected in water treated by biological processes and which is biologically active.

"It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." &apos;If these blue sky Ph.D.&apos;s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn&apos;t make a lot of the suggestions they do."

Tests were conducted to investigate the effects of cyclone geometry, operating conditions, and particle size on magnetite classification. The effects of these parameters on the partition curve for narrow size fractions were studied using a 25mm diameter cyclone cleaning -150 µ m coal. Additional tests were run to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on the slurry, solid, and water splits. The relationship between the relative density of the underflow stream and the relative density of separation was also investigated. This paper presents the results from this study.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere&apos;s obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.
