Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary Cordilleran porphyry Cu-Mo districts and their consanguineous Zn-Pb-Ag-Au-W vein and replacement deposits of the Rocky Mountain region comprise one of the largest, best studied, diverse, complex, puzzling, and richest compound metallogenic provinces on earth. A concise space-time definition of intermineral plate, regional and local structure-tectonic frameworks is crucial to deciphering their diachronous metallogeny and enhancing the explorationist's odds of future discovery.

This paper will investigate the historic and present state of the bituminous coal industry within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with special emphasis on surface mining operations. It will address pertinent parameters such as production, markets, quality, number and size of operations, price, and productivity from a statistical viewpoint. When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

The paper presents mathematical model of concealed fire. We consider a porous medium (goaf, coal fissures) through which air flows. The set of equations is constituted by transient, two dimensional mass, momentum and energy balance equations with sources describing oxygen loss and heat generation caused by coal oxidation. Paper presents several examples illustrating the phenomenon of spontaneous heating in goaf areas behind longwall faces.
