In the days of increasing environmental and safety awareness many efforts have been made to prevent losses of both an evident economic nature and also less obvious losses. These losses could be associated with damages due to negative impact on the environment and also people coming into contact in a broader sense with any toxic chemical. This paper deals with how cyanide can be applied in a responsible manner at a modern gold mine. Responsible application is achieved by minimizing losses of reagent and avoiding negative impact on the environment as well as adopting a Responsible Care philosophy to the application of cyanide. It becomes evident that this is quite a complex system with a greater commitment than avoiding reagent losses for economic purposes.

An adaptive process control system was installed in Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant in Nevada. The installation, commissioning, and testing of the system took approximately 80 manweeks, but final test results show that the system paid for itself through increased throughput within two weeks of commissioning. Both crisp and fuzzy rules are used in the expert rule base which is also integrated with continually adapting neural network models. The expert rules and models are used by predictors, and optimizers to allow the control system to provide optimum process performance under continually varying feed conditions. The selection, installation, rule and predictor configuration, and statistically verifiable testing of the control system in the Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant is described in the paper.

The problem of surface subsidence over abandoned mine lands is becoming more common due to the development of housing in suburban areas of abandoned mined lands. Subsidence can induce damage to estate properties, engineering structures and the environment. Houses, buildings, roads and utility pipelines may be fractured or broken or may collapse due to subsidence. The ground surface may be depressed and sink gradually or suddenly. The surface and subsurface water flow may be disrupted causing a change in flow pattern or depression of the water table. However, techniques for predicting abandoned mine subsidence are not yet well developed. Presently, one cannot predict when and where mine subsidence will occur. People have to wait until it occurs and then apply a suitable measure to remedy the damages.

The Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited (REGM) operates three metallurgical complexes for the recovery of gold from the Witwatersrand Gold Reefs at the town of Randfontein, 40 kilometers west of Johannesburg. Mining operations in the. area commenced in March 1889 and ceased temporarily in 1965 when the viable ore reserves had been depleted. Exploratory drilling in the 1960's indicated viable deposits of gold in the Elsburg reefs, south of the Witpoortjie Horst Block, _which formed the Southern limit of the previously exploited areas. Three shaft complexes have been established to exploit this area, known as the Cooke secti'on. In 1983 the Doornkop shaft was sunk to the north of the Cooke section to mine Kimberley reef and the South reef.

The decision to hold parallel conferences dealing with hazardous waste and mining waste grew out of the conviction that there were advantages to having personnel serving the two groups talk to each other, as both groups develop cost-effective and environmentally-protective solutions to present and future waste-disposal problems. There has been a certain amount of "reinventing the wheel" which could have been avoided by a better dialog between the two groups. The intent of holding the two parallel conferences is to allow for networking, to minimize future needless redundant effort. The opening session panel speakers represent expertise from both industries; I feel honored to speak as one with a history of serving both groups as a specialist in the subsurface behavior of heavy metals.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic has always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries and production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Due to these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processes for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored. A few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180° to 200° C or 356° to 392° F) and pressures (2.75 MPa or 400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs.

On November 1991, Homestake Mining Co. completed the installation of a $5.7-million, 2.7-kt/d (3000-stpd) flotation circuit into the flowsheet of the McLaughlin Mine in California's coastal mountain range, about 113 km (70 miles) north of San Francisco. This addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low-grade refractory reserves over that expected from direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate that is used to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit. The McLaughlin operation started in 1985 as the first pressure oxidation plant for treating sulfide refractory ore. During the mine's short history, efforts have been made to reduce costs and increase production through process development.

The bauxite deposits on the Pocos de Caldas Plateau in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were formed by the differential weathering and leaching of alcaline rocks in a ring structure. Their action on steep topography formed heterogeneous ore posture and chemical grades. Variographic analysis of several of these deposits show nested structures that are probably related to ore genesis. Kriged ore reserves estimation are presented with emphasis on the data pro cessing method that was employed. Programs were written in APL. Its intrinsic use of matrices contributed to faster programming and less computer time. In many cases looping was eliminated. The high resolution graphic resourses of APL. workspace facilitated programming of variogram analysis, fitting, and regularization. APL sub-routines are presented for variogram calculation and kriging.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. Slags generated by the ferrous-metals industry can be used to produce high-tech ceramic materials. The properties of these ceramics can be controlled by judicious choices of composition, additives, and processing parameters. Standard methods of materials handling, such as comminution and mixing, are as applicable to slag as to any other mineralogic raw material. In this study, foundry slag was ground, homogenized, melted and formed to produce a glass, and then heat treated to crystallize it into a high-strength glass-ceramic. The product shows promise as a low-cost wear-resistant tile material which can be custom cast. This and similar materials, made from slags and natural rocks, are candidates for use as construction materials, acid-resistant piping, shock-resistant sheathing, rot-proof pilings, and, when foamed, even as pontoons.

INTRODUCTION The increased activity in the Aus­tralian gold industry over the last decade has resulted in a concomitant increase in the use of sodium cyanide, with a projected consumption of 80,000 tonnes in 1991. Growing environmental awareness by government, industry and the public has generated increased interest in the fate of cyanide near gold mine tailings dams and has highlighted the lack of basic knowledge in the area, particularly for Australian conditions. In 1989 the Chemistry Centre (W.A,) commenced a' project, under the auspices of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association entitled "Fate of cyanide in the Enviroment Near Mine Tailings" to investigate some of the issues arising from the management of tailings containing cyanide, The project, which has been supported by thirteen companies has three broad aims:

Since 1991, the Porgera Joint Venture has processed refractory sulphide flotation concentrate by pressure oxidation with subse­quent gold recovery from the washed residue, by a conventional leach/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit. The capacity of the plant has been progressively increased in five stages of development. In December 1995, a third oxygen plant was commissioned, raising the total oxygen production to 750 t/d and thus allowing for an increase in the oxidation capacity of the four autoclaves. The daily sulphur oxidation rate in 1995 was 192 t/d with 99.5% oxidation, as compared to 293 t/d in 1996 with 99.0% oxidation. This paper details the performance of the pressure oxidation circuit through 1995 and 1996, and compares measured plant parameters with the original Sherritt (now Dynatec) process design criteria.

The Australian gold industry currently contributes some $4bpa to the national economy [l]. Some 40% of the total gold is produced in the region centred on Kalgoorlie known as the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. This region is the largest single centre of production with an output of some 100 tpa of gold [2]. In the Eastern Goldfields, refractory arseno­pyritic gold ore is an increasingly significant source of gold, feeding several operations utilizing bio-oxidation as the pre­carbon in pulp/leach (CIP/L) treatment process [1]. This paper desribes an alternative pre-CIP/L treatment option for use in the Eastern Goldfields based on the chlorination of arsenopyrite by chlor-alkali technology [3] using the salt resources available from saline water present in abundance in the region.

Underground water, whether it is a mine seep, in situ leach solu­tion, or a pollution plume, is difficult to track and monitor. Monitoring wells are costly to drill and may be placed in the wrong spot. This report describes a test of an electromagnetic technique to track acid water draining from the Midnite Mine near Spokane WA. The tests successfully mapped the path of acid mine drainage being collected at the mine from two seeps. Several small side branches flowing to smaller seeps and a mix­ing zone where relatively clean water mixed with the acidic water, were also mapped. The study has changed previous opin­ions on the flow of water through the site and will be used as a basis for future site remediation planning.

One function of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center's Ventilation Division is to provide assistance to MSHA enforcement and industry personnel for maintaining adequate fresh air to all areas of an underground mine. In fulfilling this objective, total mine venti1ation pressure-air quantity distribution on investigations are conducted to measure the air pressures and quantities necessary to describe and analyze the existing ventilation systems. Various ventilation parameters are calculated from these measured pressures and quantities. Some of these parameters are: pressure drop in intake and return airways, air leakage, percentages of air reaching active sections, average regulator drops, and fan pressures. The purpose of this paper is to present and compare values of ventilation parameters calculated from investigations at twenty underground coal mines.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 300km to the south of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The identified resource comprises 46 million tonnes at 1. 65g/t using a 1. 0g/t cut-off ( 50 million short tonnes at 0.05oz/st). The resource is open to the north and at depth. Mineralisation comprises easterly dipping sheeted quartz/sulphide veins, typically 10 to 20 millimetres in thickness, hosted by hornsfelled greywackes. The majority of the ore body is primary ore with only 10% classified as oxide ore. Early testwork showed that the ore was not suitable for heap leaching, giving only 50% recovery at a -3mm crush size. Acceptable recoveries were obtained at a P80 of 75 micron. However, the ore is extremely hard.

In a study using butyl diglyme as an organic extractant, essen­tially complete extraction of gold from chloride leach solution was achieved. The extraction kinetics are so fast that the process could be completed in 30 seconds. Except for iron, co-extraction of other ionic species was insignificant. Co-extracted iron species were successfully scrubbed from the loaded organic using 10% HCl solution. High grade, >99.9%, gold was recov­ered from the loaded organic using 5% oxalic acid solution as the stripping agent at a temperature of 70°C to 80°C. Over 99% of the organic-loaded gold was stripped from the organic phase. The butyl diglyme extractant is being tested on a variety of gold-bearing feedstocks. Presented here are results obtained from two gravity concentrates.

In its 110-year history as a mining camp, the Boleo copper district of Baja California has weathered significant changes in its operation, ownership, and profitability, despite an inhospitable environment and unique ore body. For some 65 years, under the operation of Compagnie Boleo, the area ranked as the second largest copper producing district in Mexico, with over 560 km of underground workings. As its ore grade-and profitability-declined, operations continued sporadically and with varying degrees of success. Today, operations at Boleo are maintained -despite the economics -while work is underway to devise a viable metallurgical process. Lab tests on a hydrometallurgical method look encouraging and, though this may end the district's days as a mining camp, the feasibility of the process may result in an 18-kt/d full-scale operation.

Olivine is a name of a mineral group that has a chemical formula of: (Mg, Fe), SiO4. The most important rock for the olivine group minerals is dunite, which can contain olivine up to 95-99%. Dunite can be obtained from chrome enrichment as a by-product. As a result of alteration of the olivine group minerals, several kinds of different minerals can occur. Main consumption areas of olivine are steel and iron industry. Also olivine is used in not only casting and refractory industries but also production of radiator, ballast material and abrasive. North of Bursa-Orhaneli has got more than 5 billion tons reserves in ultrabasic massifs. M.T.A found that olivine has got high quality of using in refractory and casting industry.
