After determining minable acreage, tons are calculated by multiplying minable acreage by average thickness and by a volume-tonnage conversion factor. Converting from tons in the ground to tons sold across the scale takes fines and internally used and wasted stone into consideration, resulting in minimum losses of about 10% for limestone and 15% for sand and gravel. A high degree of certainty about thickness, lateral continuity and geologic character defines proven reserves. Assuming continuity of these characteristics defines probable reserves. By using tpa estimations and annual tonnage requirements, the life of a deposit can be quantified. The decision can then be made regarding the necessity of securing more acreage. Some landowners choose to multiply aggregate price, operating income, or a royalty rate by tons to arrive at a value for their reserves. In doing so they probably overstate the value of their land.

This paper presents a review of the grouting works of Line 2 of the Greater Cairo MetroSystem. The Nile River alluvial deposits underlying this ancient city provided for a challenging and sometimes difficult grouting project. Permeation grouting using state-of-the-art computerized grouting techniques, as well as extensive ground treatment by jet grout, was per-formed for soil consolidation and/or groundwater control. During the project, over 425,000m3 of ground was treated, requiring 1.4 million linear meters of drilling and PVC injection pipe, 54,000 m3 of bentonite cement and 230,000 m3 of chemical and mineral grout. In addition, over 70,000 m3 of ground was treated using the jet grout method. Relative to major international transportation projects, the grouting works for Line 2 of the Cairo Metro represent one of the largest worldwide grouting endeavors to date.

In order to keep good air condition in any specific branch such as coal face and/or heading in an underground coal mine, effective factors of all the branches with respect to the specified branch have been investigated, using computer simulation. Main results of the paper are as follows; 1) A branch in a network is classified to one of three classes of effectiveness to increase, to decrease and not to change airflow rate in the specific branch by altering aerodynamic resistance in the branch. 2) Distribution of position of branches, belonging to each class, related to a specific branch is one of the macroscopic characteristic of a network which is the inherent property of every network. 3) A relation of the aerodynamic resistances of any two branches to keep a constant airflow rate in the specified branch is shown as a monotonous curve. 4) Ventilation transition diagram with the rate of airflow in the two branches as coordinates, and for different rates of airflow in the specific branch as the parameter, is found to be straight lines. 5) Existing range of airflow rates In the specified branch is given as a parameter in the enclosed area in the ventilation transition diagram. Moreover, an expert system to assist ventilation control using a transition diagram of airflow rate is introduced in this paper.

The emergence of activated charcoal adsorption as the most popular recovery method for precious metals, has led to numerous innovations aimed at increasing the efficiency of the process. This article describes a change in traditional charcoal transfer methods which will aid in reducing charcoal attrition losses. Studies have shown that significant charcoal attrition takes place during transfer, be it when using airlifts or centrifugal pumps. Tests conducted at Pinson Mines indicated a 4 to 8% loss to the minus 20 mesh fraction of charcoal after three (3) hours of pumping charcoal. Tests conducted while the author was at Jerritt Canyon indicated that charcoal transfer was a major contributor to charcoal losses; a decrease in the amount of coarse charcoal (plus 12 mesh) and an increase in the amount of finer charcoal (minus 16 plus 20 mesh) was noted as charcoal was moved to the head of the adsorption circuit.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950's and 1960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. The US Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the US coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations.

The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned at Cyprus Sierrita in July 1995. This grinding roll is the world's biggest operating unit. It has a roll diameter of 2.4 meters and a face width of 1.4 meters. It is driven by two, 2250 KW (3,000 HP) motors. This paper will discuss the development of the grinding roll at Cyprus Sierrita and what it has done for comminution of Sierrita ore. Maintenance and operating performance will be discussed as well as testwork including size reduction, power input, work index, and throughput.

This paper demonstrates the importance of including a discount rate in the determination of the optimum final depth of an open pit. Without a proper discount rate, a pit will probably end up too deep. Another consideration is future underground mining. If underground mining is profitable, the pit may need to be shallower. Of all of the investments needed, only mining equipment and the underground mine should be included, and amortization and depreciation should not he included in the study.

The lignite surface mines of Ptolemais basin operate according to special environmental terms regarding the concentrations of heavy metals and trace elements in water discharges. Based ?n the results of lab analyses and in-situ measurements conducted so far it is concluded that the concentrations of heavy - toxic metals and other trace elements are low or negligible. The deviations from the upper concentration limits specified by laws and regulations are rare and non-systematic both on their spatial or temporal distribution. The same results prove also the relation between water quality and type and nature of the sediments forming the Ptolemais basin and the carbonated and metamorphic rocks forming the surrounding mountain areas.

The Loveridge Mine, located near Fairmont, West Virginia, has been mining coal from the Pittsburgh Seam since 1958. As the mine develops its reserves it finds itself with increasingly distant hauls from the operating faces to the preparation plant. Initially, the mine was designed with track haulage. The coal was hauled to an underground rotary dump which fed a slope belt, to the preparation plant. As the haulage distances increased, production delays due to the track system's limitations became severe. To resolve this situation, a complete review of the haulage system was undertaken. Simulations of the present system along with future scenarios were conducted to help management effectively plan the haulage requirements of the mine for the remainder of its life.

The spiraling rate in phosphate rock demand during the period 1957 to 1967 led producers to expect a continuation of a high growth rate. Consequently they expanded production capacity to meet the expected demand. Both the domestic and the world demand has shown little growth over the past three years. Florida producers operating at less than 75% of installed mining capacity, produce all that their markets will absorb. We expect that the nest few years will bring only a slight improvement in this condition. An increased demand in the domestic agricultural market will be partially offset by a continuing erosion in the export market.

This paper investigated the airflow pattern in the working face area during a cross-cut development. The study used a 10:l scale face model and a mock continuous miner. Results showed that keeping up the line curtain is essential in order to avoid recirculation and to control respirable dust and methane, in the face area.

In the northwestern part of the Netherlands lies the deepest solution salt mine in the world. The company operating the mine is Frisia Zout bv (part of the K+S group). Extracting the NaCl from caverns at a depth of nearly 3000 m has a lot of challenges. Continuously monitoring, among others, the flows, pressures and salt concentrations is necessary to safely and economically mine the salt. A system has been set up at Frisia to be able to monitor the data from a distance. Data has been put in graphs to monitor the trends daily. All gauges are also continuously monitored to maintain accuracy. With this system a better understanding of the mining process has been made and has led to many optimizations.
