Coal preparation for a company having several sources of coal and several contracts for sale of coal was modeled. The objective was to minimize wash loss by selecting the quantity of coal to be supplied from each source and the appropriate washbox specific gravity setting to yield contract quality for a given shipment. constraints inposed by silo and stockpile sizes, plant and rehandling capacities, and varying coal quality specifications were included in the model. Solution is by iterative linear programming on an Apple II.

Coal represents 80% of the fuel reserves of this country, yet only 20% of the fuel consumption. In order to change this ridiculous situation, a realistic coal utilization roadmap needs to be drawn to show how we go from where we are to where we want to be. The completion of the roadways will require the building of research bridges. The research bridges on the coal processing section of the superhighway should be built to process 500pm by 100pm rather than 25pm by 0 raw coal . Particular emphasis should be on middlings processing and total plant performance. The superhighway should be layed out by a team of fuel, coal preparation and mining engineers.

With the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) on December 29, 1970 and the formation and growth of the OSHA Agency it spawned, public consciousness of occupational safety was raised. It became accepted that employees had the right to "a safe and healthful workplace". Water movement and water chemistry were monitored in the unsaturated zone at two sites in fluvial tailings deposits along the Arkansas River near Leadville, Colorado. One of the sites was remediated by the incorporation of lime and biosolids into the soil. Preliminary results, based on data collected during the 11 months following remediation, indicate that differences between the two sites can largely be attributed to heterogeneity of the deposits. Remediation has increased the alkalinity in the upper soil zone, but as of yet, there is no indication that soils at depths greater than 30 cm have been affected.

The Coal Mining Section of the National Safety Council has selected hand and finger injuries of coal miners as a major topic for safety policy analysis [Tinney, 19851. So that facts about hand and finger injuries can be used to guide the Committee's work and the work of policy-makers, we present in this paper detailed analyses of the following factors related to hand and finger injuries received by coal miners between 1975 and 1983: occupations of the injured miners; activities of the miners when injured; machines involved; objects, substances, exposures, or bodily motions that produced or inflicted the injuries; principal physical characteristics of injuries; and events directly resulting in the injuries. We analyze hand injuries for underground and surface mines separately because of the remarkably different production methods and hazards evident in these two operating environments. We do not, however, provide information about hand and finger injuries that occurred in surface operations at underground sites (such as yards, shops, or tipples), auger mining operations, culm banks, dredging operations, mill or preparation plants, offices, or laboratories. The most comprehensive information about the safety of coal mining in the United States is assembled by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor. Mine operators in the United States report to HSAC all injuries as required under Part 50, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations (mandated by Section 103 the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, Public Law 95-164). These regulations stipulate that injuries must be reported within ten days of their occurrence on a United States government data collection form, Mine Accident, Illness and Injury Report (MSHA Form 7000-1). HSAC maintains these data primarily to produce federally-mandated reports. Composition of salt in the Permian Flowerpot Shale in northwest Oklahoma suggests that the salt in this formation was deposited in the early phase of solar evaporation. Brine produced through natural dissolution of the subsurface salt has netted very pure brines, with relatively low concentrations of magnesium salts that should result from late-stage precipitation of salt deposits from sea water. Over the last 100 years, extensive studies of sea- water evaporites, in relation to brine density, have been a topic of discussion. The development of evaporation models has facilitated the increased production and purity of solar salt (salt produced through evaporation of brine by the sun's energy). Conversely, this information can be utilized to gain an understanding of how rock-salt formations were precipitated from sea water by analyzing the elemental constituents of the rock salt and of the resulting brine. By evaluation of well-documented, phase-curve tables of sea-water evaporation, a basic theory can be formulated on how the Flowerpot salt unit was formed.

Coal macerals differ widely in their surface properties and in their hydrophobicities. Therefore, it is necessary to study the flotation time dependence of coal macerals using varying concentrations of various frothers and collectors. In the present study, froth flotation is used to explore the possibility of segregating coal macerals based on their relative rates of flotation. Petrographic analysis of the various macerals in the concentrate were carried out, and the results are expressed in terms of the recoveries of various maceral groups and mineral matter. Results show that it is possible to recover a good volume of the reactive macerals without mach loss of calorific value.

An existing coal mine's raw coal 60 inch conveyor system had become productivity bound by a capacity of 3,500 tph. The existing conveyor drives were fixed speed wound rotor induction motor drives installed in 1983. The fast track upgrade installed variable speed medium voltage variable frequency drives to speed up the conveyor to a capacity of 5, 000 tph. The installation took place over a one week system shutdown during Christmas 2000.

The beneficiation of boron minerals flotation with well defined systems has been only slightly, investigated in the literature. The difficulty arises from fact that boron minerals cover a spectrum of solubilities. Colemanite (a calcium-containing, relatively insoluble, boron mineral) and borax (a highly soluble boron mine, have been used to exemplify the flotation of boron minerals. Using sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH), the floatability responses of these boron minerals are considerably different. This has been ascribed to variations in the solubilities of boron minerals and the presence of cations in the lattice structure. Fourteen uranium miners' lungs from Colorado plateau were collected at autopsy and the concentrations of 238U, 234U and 230Th were determined by radiochemical procedures utilizing solvent extraction - alpha spectrometric techniques. The uranium and thorium isotopes are in near equilibrium with average concentrations of 238U, 234U and 230Th being 89.3, 95.2 and 91.1 pCi/kg respectively. The combined average radiation dose rate to lung from these three isotopes is about 24.2 mrad/year at death excluding the unmeasured contribution from the 226Ra and daughters. The average concentration of 230Th is about 65 times higher than the mean concentration of 230Th in lungs of non-miners dying at comparable ages from the same region.

Six-fold, high-resolution, compressional-wave seismic data were acquired across a coal mining property in the Meigs County study area, southeastern Ohio, with a view to differentiating the Clarion Coal Member and a truncating channel sandstone prior to longwall mining without costly drilling. The seismic technique, as is illustrated by our example data, was successfully used to map those areas where the coal is present, as well as those places where it was eroded by incising fluvial streams. Our results demonstrate that the seismic reflection method, using an engineering seismograph, can be a cost-effective way to define discontinuities associated with coal seams.

Any geostatistical study involves (implicit) hypotheses about 1. The distribution function 2. The drift of the data 3. The (underlying) variogram Once these are known, most other results follow from geostatistical theory. However, to date, there have been few theoretical studies on testing these implicit hypotheses. Most of the published studies in this area have dealt with the fluctuation of the variogram or the sampling distribution of the variogram (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978; Davis and Borgman, 1979). Questions regarding these hypotheses regarding a given deposit arise often. Coal geologists often infer channels and washouts on the basis of thicknesses data. Zoning is recognized in a variety of metal deposits. A test as to whether these inferences are valid on just chance occurrences would have widespread application. .It is standard geostatistical practice to "eyeball" fit variograms. In the early exploration phase when just a few pairs are available, the variogram often displays wide fluctuations and there may be considerable doubt about which variogram model to use.

Equipment capacities of a sample of Illinois surface coal mines representing about 60% of surface production in the state were studied. Available equipment capacity was compared with the required capacity, as indicated by coal production and stripping ratios reported. Most mines sampled showed surplus equipment capacity, which if avoided, would result in substantial cost savings. The surplus capacity results mostly from market fluctuations that result in underutilization of equipment. Study findings underline the importance of market assessment at the time of mine planning and of communication between marketing and engineering arms of a coal firm.

The behavior of the immediate shaly roof within a drift mine in eastern Kentucky, operating in the Coalburg seam, was monitored with roof bolt dynamometers. The dynamometers used were capable of providing readings up to a maximum load of 66.72 kN (15,000 lbs), + 0.022 kN (5 lbs). To observe the influence of moisture on the rate and extent of roof deterioration, 57dynamometers were installed on roof bolts anchored in intake and neutral airways. Monitoring was conducted during the period January 1985 through January 1986, in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with seasonal changes. Analysis of the data showed a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used in the paper, plastics, paint, rubber and caulks and sealants industries. The favorable properties of GCC include high whiteness and brightness, low hardness and outstanding rheology in water systems. The quality of calcitic GCC ores, which includes chalk, limestone and marble, is dependent on calcite purity and the nature and quantity of the impurity minerals. Wet and dry grinding are used in the processing of GCC. Ore processed by optical sorting, flotation and/or particle-size classification has higher brightness and lower abrasion characteristics. GCC markets are a function of the product's properties, purity and cost.

Until recently, the application of the Jameson Cell technology in North America has been restricted to minerals processing. Recently, laboratory, pilot-plant and full-scale testing has been conducted to assess the Jameson Cell's ability to effectively treat fine coal. Based on the data, carrying-capacity relationships have been developed. In addition to its operational simplicity, the Jameson Cell has the ability to provide a separation efficiency near the theoretical separation performance on the basis of ash rejection while achieving a relatively high throughput capacity Tie results obtained from the various fine coal cleaning applications in North America is presented in this publication.
