Bismuth, "the green metal," has become an important substitute for lead. The uranium industry was never really dead, anti-nuclear activists just wanted the world to think it was. And diamonds are fast becoming a miner's best friend. These commodities and others were discussed in May 1997 at the 47th Annual Minerals Processing Division meeting, held at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The meeting was put on by the SME Colorado subsection and was attended by about 115 people. In addition to the above three commodities, attendees learned more about the state of the copper industry, as well as lead and zinc and gold and silver. The program also included discussions of molybdenum, platinum and project financing. The following is a summary of some of the presentations.

When an economic mineral deposit is first discovered, it is almost immediately defined in terms of tonnage and grade. As exploration and assessment continue, the initial definition is ordinarily qualified by such terms as "proven," "probable" and so on. Even at this stage, the fundamental philosophies of the discoverers may manifest themselves in conservative or optimistic views of the deposit's potential. It is unusual, however, for the philosophies to be expressed in terms of metallurgical performance criteria at such an early stage unless the ore is very unusual in its chemistry or mineralogy. Even before drilling is completed, the first mining plans appear, with or without the benefit of metallurgical test data. This is the point at which management philosophies can have some of their greatest impacts. In ideal cases, where large, uniform ore bodies can be developed and mined according to assay cutoffs, the conventional philosophy of maximizing tonnage while minimizing cost can be followed without much metallurgical difficulty. Given that the majority of mine ventilation operating costs are imposed by shafts, the need to predict the resistance of a planned shaft with reasonable accuracy is important. During conceptual design, shaft resistances are usually predicted by use of published friction factors, k, based upon lining and fitting configurations. More often than not, published friction factors do not directly coincide with "real" shafts, so their use is somewhat limited. For more accurate shaft resistance determination, equations both theoretical and empirical may be employed if there is detailed knowledge of the shaft. These equations treat the shaft resistance as discrete components, with their sum being the overall shaft resistance. This paper describes the basic shaft resistance equations and verifies these equations by comparison to field measured shaft resistances. Several shafts were examined which varied in depth, shape and fitting arrangements. Results are presented and conclusions drawn to show that the shaft resistance equations are accurate.

The dimensions and shape of both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos. These properties include the fibrillar structure, small fibrill widths and distinctive crystallographic faces of fibrills. Criteria for distinguishing amphibole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical proper-ties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters.

The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.

Three types of flotation columns were developed with a column dia of 8.0 cm and a length of 160 cm. The first type consists of an ordinary column fitted with a porous plate at the bottom. The second type consists of two electrodes at the bottom to obtain very fine and uniform bubbles generated electrolytically and the third is a combination of first and second types, i.e. to get both electrolytic bubbles and air from the compressor through porous plate. Three different ores were tested-gold tailings for recovery of scheelite, copper tailings (chalcopyrite) and oxide copper ore. In the case of scheelite and copper oxides, good results were obtained with the first type of column itself, whereas the third type column was found fairly effective in the recovery of chalcopyrite. The variables like the effect of reagent concentration, column height above the feed point, feed flow rate, current density, air flow rate, particle size etc. were examined.

The purpose of this study is to compare estimation methods for lignite reserves at the Amyndeo mine and to provide a map of the estimated thickness of the coal seams. The reserves are first estimated with the method of Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. The second estimation method is based on Ordinary Kriging using the Spartan variogram model. Finally, the reserves are estimated by the mean lignite thickness value of the drill-hole data Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging uncertainty.

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

A stochastic model for evaluating the impact of the reliability and maintainability of shovels and trucks on the operational effectiveness of shovel-truck mining systems is presented. In the model, the Markov modeling technique is used to analyze the operating status of a shovel-truck mining system. Then, simulation is used to study the productivity of a shovel-truck system in a particular state. Finally, the relationship between the effectiveness of a shovel-truck system in terms of productivity and the reliability and maintainability of equipment is established. This relationship may be very useful to mine managers in making decisions in surface mining (e.g., regarding production process control, equipment replacement, and maintenance planning). A quantitative study is given to demonstrate how the reliability and maintainability of equipment affect the system effectiveness and how to pinpoint the parameter that has the most significant effect on the system effectiveness. The quantitative study indicated that in order to improve the system effectiveness significantly, the reliability and maintainability of the equipment need to be improved simultaneously.

Three studies conducted at the University of Utah relating to the effect of scrubbers on face airflow patterns, the resulting dust exposure of operators and the development of a throat scrubber for continuous miners are summarized in this paper. The first study involved full-scale laboratory tests to determine the potential dispersion patterns and transport of dust at a continuous miner face, using different ventilation configurations and a scrubber. Concentration maps were developed and potential exposures at operator positions were examined. The second study involved the development of a 3-D numerical model to predict airflow patterns generated by a scrubber at a continuous miner face. The model was designed to evaluate the role of various face parameters on airflow patterns at a miner face and to complement the full-scale testing. The third study involved the design and fabrication of a low profile hydraulically powered continuous miner throat scrubber. The scrubber uses three hydraulic motors and small diameter fans to draw about 3000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air and uses a flooded bed scrubber to filter dust particles.

At Outokumpu's pyhasalmi Concentrator, a Flotation Expert Display System aids the process operator to make better decisions and provides guidance on the most efficient method of achieving the desired control objectives.

The ultimate recovery in a heap leaching operation is related to the degree of exposure of the valuable minerals in comminuted particles. Recently, high-resolution cone beam x-ray microtomography (XMT) has been used to determine this parameter. XMT technology consists of examining the extent of mineral exposure for each size fraction of ore in 3D, then, by algebraic calculations, the ultimate recovery can be estimated for different particle size distributions (PSD). To confirm the usefulness of the XMT technology for mineral exposure analysis, column tests were performed to determine ultimate recovery using three PSDs for two composites obtained from the copper heap leaching operation at Zaldivar-Chile.

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice. The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The EMEW technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. In particular application of the EMEW cell for recovery of silver offers significant operating and capital cost advantages over conventional Merrill Crowe technology used for cyanide based solutions. The cell also offers process advantages for direct silver recovery from nitric acid solutions. The performance of the EMEW® cell on silver cyanide solutions, producing high grade silver metal in a single step, is accomplished by providing a physical mechanism which presents metal ions to the cathode on a highly efficient and continuous basis. The simplicity of design and operation of the EMEW cell offers the following advantages for silver recovery from cyanide or nitrate based solutions: • High grade product in a single step. • Selective for silver over other metals in the electrolyte. • Wide operating concentration range (100,000 - 5ppm). • Ability of the cell to operated in a variety of acid or alkaline electrolytes. The Colosseum Mine is within the Clark Mountain mining district located approximately 72 km (42 miles) southwest of Las Vegas. Nevada in San Bernardino County, California. Gold mineralization at the Colosseum Mine is hosted in two 150 m by 210 m (500 ft X 700 ft) interconnected. rhyolitic intrusive breccia pipes that intruded Precambrian crystalline basement rocks and over-lying Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Sub-sequent erosion (de-roofing) of all of the Paleozoic section and a portion of the Precambrian section has exposed the pipes to the present level (probably a significant depth in the original breccia pipe system).

INTRODUCTION [A Decade After the 1972 Stockholm Conference] The UN-sponsored Stockholm Environmental Conference held just over 10 years ago was the first successful attempt to achieve global recognition of environmental issues. Indicative of the lack of concrete involvement in environmental protection to that time was the fact that only 15 nations had a department or ministry responsible for environmental affairs compared to today's 143. Many governments were uncertain of what were the most serious or pressing problems in their country. There was obviously a need to both identify those issues and to determine how to manage them once identified. At the same time, the public at large was becoming more critically aware that environmental protection had been neglected by government and often ignored by industry. It soon became evident that large amounts of money would have to be spent to redress some of the more evident problems. However, many developing nations were reluctant to slow down the much-needed industrial growth by imposing costly environmental controls on industry. In fact, some waived environmental control altogether as an incentive to attract industry. In some sectors, it was often stated that industrial development and environmental protection were mutually exclusive activities. The need of an awareness, commitment and dedication by all sectors of society to protect their environment was just beginning to develop, replacing the rather simplistic view that all environmental problems were caused by greedy industry.

In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

The environment for process engineers today is very different from 20 years ago. The ideas and mathematical description of models for a multitude of different unit operations is an ongoing development. The computer tools to deal with the mathematics are readily available and specialist companies have developed, tested and verified their models. The challenge for the process engineer is to know which package to use and to know whether a particular application is the most accurate for the specific process. Metallurgical simulation programs today are well known and proven. Certain programs are specialized while others are broader based. The needs of each user are dependent on the application. Mechanized mining in the underground coal industry has continued to evolve since the introduction of the remote control mining machine. Remote control continuous mining machines without an onboard operator’s compartment are now the norm in the industry. Extended cuts in excess of 30 ft (9.1 m) are commonplace. Unfortunately, machine operator positioning has become an often unrecognized safety concern, particularly when remote control continuous mining machines excavate a turn (turn a crosscut). From January 2001 through July 2004, remote control continuous mining machine operators or helpers have been involved in ten roof fall fatalities and eight machinery crushing fatalities. The machinery crushing incidents occurred when machines were being repositioned or moved to another place. Of the ten roof fall fatalities, three occurred while a crosscut was being turned and a fourth fatality occurred while mining was being conducted adjacent to the crosscut. The operating time associated with turning crosscuts is a relatively small part of the mining cycle. In recent years, however, a disproportionate number of fatal incidents appear to have been associated with this activity. Procedures for reducing the incidence of operator fatalities while turning crosscuts are discussed. These techniques include: minimizing the number of turn cuts, limiting turn cut depth, establishing no work zones and using visual warning devices to designate them, installing more roof/rib support in the vicinity of the turn cut, using notch cuts prior to initiating a full turn cut, and positioning the remote control miner operator in nontraditional locations.
