This paper presents a review of halogen solvents used in the processing of precious metals. Reagents of widely varying chemical structures, such as chlorine gas, calcium and sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, iodine and bromine have been used for precious metal extraction. None of these chemicals are a replacement for cyanide: however, each of these chemicals present an opportunity for use in processing a specific type of ore. The ore and chemical must be matched to each other for success. Recovery of metal from the leach solutions also offers challenges.

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.

The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology which results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoids) have been implicated as important biochemical mediators of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dub1 could influence the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500°C and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TxB2) levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 and TxB2 production were markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE2 and TxB2 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in PGE2 and TxB2 production compared to control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 1100°C resulted in eicosanoid levels which were not significantly different from control. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production.

The first part of this two-part article summarizes the result of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program involving operating mining companies throughout the world. The program was aimed at developing a better understanding of the influence of slurry rheology on the performance of mineral/coal grinding circuits. Part 1 presents the basic concepts identified, including typical laboratory results showing the influence on grinding behavior of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals. Part 2, in January, will illustrate typical industrial scale test results on both open and closed circuits using the concepts presented in Part 1. Special emphasis will be placed on identifying some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. Introduction The industrial-scale practice of wet grinding minerals and coals in tumbling media mills (ball, rod, and pebble) is well-known to operating mineral processing engineers and plant design personnel. Over the last century, considerable experience and data has been collected, correlated, and put into rules or guidelines for successful circuit design and operation. Typical factors influencing circuit throughput that have been analyzed in some depth are mill diameter and length, grinding media size and loading, feed and product particle size, mill power use, and the interaction of classifier type and efficiency with the grinding device. Until recently, knowledge of slurry rheology influence on large scale grinding circuit performance has been limited. Even today slurry rheology effects are essentially ignored in plant design. Indeed, in most plant operations only qualitative guidelines are followed. For example, too thick a slurry causes throughput losses and too thin a slurry uses excessive water or causes water handling problems such as pumping limitations. A search of published literature and numerous discussions with experienced plant operating personnel has shown an awareness that changing the percent of solids in the mill influences grinding or the response of grinding involving fine feeds versus coarse feeds. However, most the work identified relative to rheology effects in mineral/coal grinding was qualitative. Even in the few studies that were more quantitative, the scope of the work was usually too narrow to draw general conclusions. Also, the detailed rheological characterization tied to observed breakage and the combination of laboratory to industrial-scale testing that is required to develop a broad understanding of any factor influencing grinding had not been done. In this environment, this detailed program began in 1967. It had three distinct goals: • To develop a basic understanding of slurry rheology influence on breakage characteristics in the laboratory. • To test general rheology concepts developed in the lab on the industrial scale. • To develop a commercially viable chemical approach to controlling slurry rheology that would lead to the use of chemical grinding additives or grinding aids. The goals have been met, at least in part, this year. A small fraction of the extensive laboratory and plant results have been made available in published literature. Much of the research program dealt with identifying and developing chemical grinding aids, but a lot of useful and practical information on percent solids, particle size, and slurry temperature influence on grinding circuit performance also was collected. The purpose of this article is to present a clear and concise sum¬mary of the results of the entire program. The importance of rhe¬ology control in grinding circuit behavior will be demonstrated using a series of carefully per¬formed industrial scale experi¬ments (both open and closed cir¬cuits) that have not yet been reported in general literature. Mining companies participating in the test program on a proprie¬tary basis have found the informa¬tion in this article to be useful in better understanding and improv¬ing circuit performance. Viscosity Effects in Grinding Studies In this program&apos;s previous labo¬ratory studies, it was shown that there is a consistent pattern of change in specific rates of break¬age of both mineral and coal slur¬ries as slurry fluidity changes. Using the net production rate of material smaller than some spec¬ified size-for example, kg/hr of <75 µm (200 mesh)-as an index of mill production in a standard batch mill test (with a given feed material, feed size, mill, and mill conditions such as constant time of grind), the following facts were established (see Fig. 1): • The normal range of low den¬sity, low viscosity slurry (region A) gave no variation in mill produc¬tion. The measured rates of break¬age exhibited normal first order grinding. • Grinding of a somewhat higher viscosity slurry (region B) could give increased production. The higher viscosity was obtained

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker&apos;s exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee&apos;s understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

Oversize boulders in mines and quarries must be broken for waste disposal or further processing of ore. Early methods involved drilling and "shooting" or using a drop ball of sufficient weight to accomplish the purpose. The first "high-energy" hammers for breaking concrete or boulders were pneumatically operated. Blow energy was limited by valving and air pressure. However, smaller boulders of lower compressive strength could be broken. A hydraulic excavator-backhoe type machine was required for either a drop ball or hammer. Standard practice was to break oversize boulders in the pit before hauling to the grizzly or crusher. Generally, quarry boulders were not valuable enough for further processing. Quarry roads were lined with oversize boulders. As safety requirements were advanced, "drill and blast" for boulders was ruled out.

Thiourea is recognized as a technically competitive alternative to cyanide for gold and silver extraction for a variety of ores and concentrates. This paper describes the results of a recent mini-pilot locked cycle test comparing cyanidation with acidothioureation treatment of gold bearing sulphide concentrate. The gold extractability of both methods was similar. The comparative metallurgical operating conditions and test results are summarized. Detailed byproduct solution analyses and environmental toxicity test results are presented and suggest that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Comparative process economics are summarized based on preliminary commercial operating flowsheets derived for the locked cycle case study. Capital and operating cost estimates are shown. The results indicate that cyanidation is more economically favorable within the constraints of the case study. Considerations for process selection between thioureation and cyanidation, for conceptual case studies, are discussed.

In the author's selenium report of 1994 (1), the literature was culled for selenium removal technologies that had a chance of producing effluents with <10 ppb of total selenium. Very few processes could achieve such low concentrations. The EPA dictates such low concentrations. Discharges to fishery waters must be <5 ppb total selenium. The federal max­imum contaminant level ( MCL) for drinking water is 50 ppb. The EPA regulations are for total selenium, not for the species, perhaps because an approved EPA assay method is atomic absorption and it cannot distinguish between species.

The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

Simple observations and tests during drilling exploration can provide useful data on probable water conditions. As the prospect becomes more serious, more detailed investigation of ground water and dewatering needs may be warranted. Ignoring ground-water conditions can lead to costly mistakes.

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

This development, known as the electrohydrodynamic method, is very safe and highly economical compared to other methods of rock breaking. This work presents the experience of Cia. Vale do Rio Doce in using Diagnostic Leaching tests to characterize refractory ores and CIP tailings. With the diagnostic leaching results of the highly refractory gold ore from Maria Preta Mine (Brazil), a process flowsheet was defined for a feasibility study of possible process modification on the existing plant. With CIP tailings from its Fazenda Brasileiro and Caué operations the amount of cyanidable gold was determined to aid plant optimization.

Dunn has written an excellent paper providing a wealth of advice on what is often the most costly consumable in the mineral processing plant. As he pointed out, grinding media selection and quality control can play a major role in successful plant operation. Owing to the economic importance of this topic, there are some important factors related to media sizing that I believe merit further comment. Dunn made reference to a slightly simplified version of the Azzaroni (1981) equation and pointed out its successful use for the Henderson SAG and Climax ball mills.
