The McLaughlin Mine is based on a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of northern California, about 1 12 air km (70 air miles) north of San Francisco. Owned and operated by Homestake Mining Co., the McLaughlin deposit contains about 18 Mt (20 million st) of gold ore at an average grade of 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st), or about 93 t (3 million oz). The area was identified as a gold target by Homestake in early 1978. Drilling confirmed it to be a commercial deposit by 1980. The mine was then planned, engineered, built and brought into production by March of 1985. The deposit was historically a part of the Knoxville District. It was mined for cinnabar, which was used to produce mercury for use in recovering gold and silver in the Mother Lode and Comstock districts. At that time, the mine was called the Manhatten and later the One Shot Mine. It was worked for more than 100 years, producing about 76,000 flasks of mercury without any awareness of the presence of economic concentrations of gold. By 1978, the site was largely disturbed and entirely unreclaimed.

Equity investments and loans are made in oil and gas and mining projects by the World Bank Group (WBG) as one piece of a multi-faceted quest to reduce poverty. The Bank mandate to reduce poverty through private sector investments has been contested by civil society organizations, so the Bank has established an independent review, entitled the Extractive Industries Review (EIR) www.eireview.org. The EIR is reviewing, from the perspective of affected stakeholders, the impacts and benefits of WBG development policy. In this paper, we review the indicators used by the WBG, academics and others to measure the effectiveness of investments. We argue that currently used frameworks and indicators do not capture local or regional data sets, and instead focus on available and easily aggregated information at the national level. A case review of the WBG?s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Insurance Guarantee Agency (MIGA) investments and loans in Sub-Saharan Africa provide material data buttressing the argument. Poverty studies in the extractive industries have a long way to go toward measuring and accounting for dollars spent and invested. The paper concludes with a call for project level and regional indicators to track poverty alleviation. Data gathered for this research was funded in part by the Extractive Industries Review.

This paper describes the techniques implemented at Randfontein Estates to develop twin-haulages at 'high speed'. An operation which culminated in the world record advance for twin-end multiblast cyclic development in hard abrasive quartzites. A major expansion project was planned for the mine, with the sinking of a third twin-shaft system (to be known as Cooke No. 3), to raise the level of ore production from 3 500 000 to 5 000 000 tonnes per alumm. Subsequent redesign of the proposed shaft system as a single 9 m brattice wall shaft took place, reducing the planned shaft sinking period by 12 months and saving an estimated R 250 000 (U.S. $ 330 000) in sinking costs. The advancement of the Cooke No. 3 Shaft sinking and development programme necessitated a rapid excavation schedule for two interconnecting twin-haulages from the existing Cooke No. 2 twin shaft complex to provide a second means of egress. An early holing between the two shafts would provide significant financial and technical benefits. Pre-development and equipping of shaft pillar excavations would enable a rapid shaft production build up and blocking out of at least one year's ore-reserves.

"""Operational excellence"" provides a sound foundation for RWE Power AG's three strategic pillars (innovation, expansion and organic growth). The maintenance and development of operational excellence in lignite mining operations at RWE Power is supported by the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) ""immer:besser"" (getting better). Obtaining cost reductions with the aid of the CIP as a kind of value-adding self-renewal process to ensure competitive lignite mining operations and lignite-based electricity generation forms the basis for further increases in profitability and growth. Since the beginning of the 1990s, RWE Power has carried out a multitude of re-engineering projects focusing on the efficient shaping of processes with the assistance of external consultants to enable the Company to cope with the considerable need for change by swiftly implementing major efficiency levers. These also include the required adaptation and development of the organization. Since 2004, the Continuous Opencast Mine Improvement Process (""KVT"") has enabled the mines to tap significant cost reduction potential by virtue of their own strength. But there is another issue that has come into focus: the development of performance enhancement options. In 2006, the ""KVT"" process, piloted in the opencast mines, was included in the RWE Power-wide immer:besser (i:b) programme (Figure 1)."

Semiautogenous (SAG) ball mills are being increasingly used today for the coarse grinding of a range of ores, including gold, copper and iron. Larger mines are demanding mills with larger throughputs. This has led to some remarkable developments in mill diameters and installed powers. Conventional design principles - mills with trunnion bearings - have reached their limitations. This article describes one SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement and Krupp Polysius' Combiflex twin drive. In August 1997, the world's largest SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement was commissioned in Queensland, Australia, operating as a wet mill. The inside diameter is 10.4 x 5.1 m (34 x 17 ft) effective grinding length. The 1.36-ktlh (1,500-stph) SAG mill is driven by two Combiflex drives (twin drives with 2 x 5,500-MW or 7,375-hp installed motor power) in conjunction with a girth gear (outside diameter 11,890 mm or 468 in.). Commissioning of the SAG mill was completed with no notable technical difficulties. The plant runs continuously except for planned maintenance stoppages and process-specific reasons. As this article is written, the machine has been in operation for about 8,000 hours without major problems.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

Over the recent years there has been an increase in the application of retreat mining on longwall faces as mine operators strive for ever greater productivity. The purpose of this paper in then to review current practice as a starting point and then move forward to discuss the future geometry's that a longwall face may take. Single and double production zone three roadway faces are assessed. All possible configurations of three roadway faces are defined. Unsuitable configurations are rejected after analysis of broad ventilation issues. The remaining configurations are then assessed on an operational basis, this includes: limits on retreat synchronisation, structure of centre gate, floor bulging and equipment installation. The remaining viable configurations are then further assessed on ventilation issues, this includes: provision for gas control/gas fringe, face climate and balancing of face flows. Possible face climate is assessed using numerical simulation of the various configurations, the predicted dry/wet bulb temperature and predicted levels of heat stress indices are given and discussed in detail, along with face flow balancing. The necessary conditions required for the successful operation of a double production zone three roadway face system are formulated, together with conclusions as to the possible level of application.

Introduction The Bulk Handling Technology has already started its transformation to the Industry 4.0. Having some of the harshest working and environmental conditions of the industry, the possibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components seems a perfect target to focus on. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era during last years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts. However, these big parts of the installations rely in smaller parts that have been left aside for a while, mainly due to the difficulty to adapt them to IoT (Internet of Things). The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers whereas all the other components of the conveyor belt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stop of the whole conveyor, due to the possible damages to the belt, thus the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers, facing all the problems until its final installation in very different demanding conveyors, from the Australian extreme heat to the freezing cold Norway. All the tests done under actual working conditions, in real installations, have given a valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solution and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system. Background and Current State The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers long or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. As in many other industry products, the condition of rollers can be recognized measuring key parameters like the temperature of the bearings, the vibration level etc. The traditional way is to use the characteristic noise of a failing bearing, but this method usually implies to change several rollers because the maintenance team is not able to identify a single source of the noise. In recent years different attempts to measure the temperature of the bearings have been made, but the result is not accurate enough due to the proximity of the rollers in the idlers

Raises are widely constructed underground in hard rock mining for ventilation, material transport or emergency escape. The four major raise excavation methods, Drop Raise, Conventional, Alimak and Raise Bore can be divided into two categories from ground control point of view, one ground support can be installed during excavation, the other not. Excavation method must be chosen carefully to keep the raise wall in stable state during excavation and make sure enough rock stand-up time to install ground support if needed. If rock quality is permitted and there is no strict space limitation, raise bore method which is the only method that ground support can not be installed after the whole excavation is finished should be considered first because it is faster, cheaper, safer and less disturbance to the hosting rock. Support may or may not be needed depends on the purpose of the raise and rock quality. In high quality hosting rocks, if the raise is only for ventilation or material transfer, support may be not needed. If it is for emergency escape or escape and ventilation, which provide or require personnel access, the whole raise must be supported either in high or low quality rock. Based on on site data collection, construction and raise utilization, this paper gave out the rule of thumb how to decide an excavation method. After purpose of the raise, required raise diameter (size) and raise site options being known, geotechnical data collection is the next important step in a raise project.

INTRODUCTION Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. is an Evansville, Indiana based heavy construction contractor engaged in projects for both the public and private sectors of the underground construction industry. General Project History The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining various navigation and impoundment structures on the nation's inland waterways. Maintenance involves both the work required to maintain the structure in fully-operable condition and the ongoing work required to maintain a positive impact on the environment. John Day Dam is located on the Columbia River approximately 95 km (60 miles) upstream of The Dalles, Oregon. It was constructed to: provide electric power to the Pacific Northwest; provide Locking for up-and-downstream bound commercial and private watercraft; act as a water impoundment structure to control flooding conditions; and to provide a source of irrigation water

Introduction Groundwater resource evaluation has historically required extensive field investigative work, usually at great cost. More recently, the advent of the microcomputer has made difficult aquifer and groundwater evaluations comparatively simple and less expensive. A groundwater model is a numeric solution to a set of equations that calculates the water level in an aquifer or other types of water bearing strata. A computer will execute the solution of the set of equations rapidly and thereby permit evaluation of large amounts of hydrogeologic data rapidly. Computer modeling of groundwater resources is very often used to forecast the effects of multiple uses of a single groundwater resource. Modeling of heavily used aquifers has proven to be beneficial for averting problems arising from competitive use of a groundwater resource. This paper describes the work tasks performed in order to evaluate a large alluvial aquifer and thereby predict the hydrologic impact of additional groundwater withdrawal. Purpose and Scope Neyer, Tiseo & Hindo, Ltd. (NTH) was retained to evaluate the groundwater supply potential of the Missouri River alluvium underlying the Fairfax District in Kansas City, Kansas (Figure 1). The proposed groundwater supply is being considered for industrial use as non-contact process water and a heat exchange medium for plant climate control. The anticipated peak groundwater demand is estimated to exceed 30 million gallons per day (MGD) during the summer months, with an average daily demand of nearly 25 MGD. The proposed groundwater supply was to be developed from 15 large-diameter production wells located at positions that would minimize potential interference.

INTRODUCTION The placing of the monolithic concrete lining of the Bi-County water tunnel illustrates the state of the art in the materials, equipment, methods and productivity available to the industry for this type of construction. This paper describes the management and engineering rationale used by Clevecon, Inc., a subsidiary of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, in developing the concrete mix designs, the design of the specialized equipment, and the methods used in the manufacture, transport, and placing of the lining. Also discussed are the changes to the reinforcing steel design instigated to facilitate its handling and placing, as well as to enhance the quality of the lining. The intent is to bring to the attention of designers the effects certain design aspects have on the construction of reinforced concrete tunnel linings, as well as indicate the areas where research and development effort should be expended to further reduce costs for this type of construction. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Bi-County Water Tunnel West is a water transmission main owned by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission of Hyattsville, Maryland. The facility was designed by A. A. Mathews Division (formerly STRAAM Engineers, Inc.) CRS Group Engineers Inc., Rockville, Maryland. It is to be utilized as the central feeder of potable water for the northern suburbs of Washington, DC, extending some 4,597 meters from a riser shaft at its western terminus to the eastern interface, with a similar tunnel which extends eastward about 5,180 meters; the majority of its length being under Interstate Highway 1-495. This paper discusses the research results of sulphide ore properties with respects on self-heating and the assessment techniques on mine spontaneous combustion for several mines of sulphide ores in China. A group of experimental devices for testing the chemical behaviour of sulphide minerals, the geological structures, the rate of oxygen absorption, the initial self-heating temperature, and the ignition point of ore samples, etc. are also described in detail. These methods have been proved to be effective by several sulphide mines which all have the history of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores. INTRODUCTION A fire disaster from the spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores in a mine can produce large quantities of toxic gases and heat to pollute the working environment, lead to large economic losses and loss of human life, and even compell the mine to be closed. Some mines of copper, lead, zinc, tin and iron in China are of high content of sulphur. It is of great importance to evaluate the potential of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores before beginning to design and mine the ore deposits. At present, the mechanism of spontaneous combustion accepted commonly is that sulphide ores undergo slow oxidation on exposure to moisture air at ambient temperature, with the evolution of heat, gases and moisture. The heat generated, if not dissipated, gives rise to an increase in the temperature of the sulphide ores. As the temperature of the sulphide ores rises, the rate of oxidation increases. If this is allowed to proceed unchecked it can eventually result in the ignition of the sulphide ores. For pyrite (FeS2), it reacts with oxygen and water according to the following equations.

Arizona is a sun-belt growth-region where 13 tons of industrial (nonmetallic) minerals is being produced annually per capita. In 19B5, non-fuel mineral production reached $1.532 billion and consisted of metallic ($1.277 billion-84%) and nonmetallic ($253.5 million-16%) earth materials. Sand-and-gravel value was second only to copper. over 90% of the value of nonmetallics is represented by combined sand, gravel, cement, and lime. The remaining less than 10% ($25 million) was attributed mainly to stone, specific volcanic products (cinder, perlite, pumice), gypsum, clays, salt, zeolite, and others. Current interest in industrial-mineral development in Arizona is high, especially in the geologically complex Basin and Range region.

The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

The ultimate objective of the development work presented in the paper is to devise an appropriate method for relating powered support specification to geological conditions and mining practice, thus enabling the longwall method of coalmining to be successfully implemented throughout the varied coalfields of the world. The paper begins with a review of various methods previously used to determine support rating, each method being analysed with regard to its source, the logic and theory which constitute the method, and subsequent recommendations. An alternative approach is then proposed, the Powered supports being considered to be one of three foundations, sharing load with coal ahead of the faceline which acts as another foundation, and the waste behind the supports which acts as the remaining foundation. The load/deflection characteristics of the coal and waste, which in turn are related to geological conditions and mining practice, are shown to affect the load transfer on to and hence the specification of the powered support. In particular the characteristic of the waste foundation is shown to be affected by the caving mechanism, an alternative form to that mechanism accepted for British conditions being proposed and designated "parting-plane-controlled" caving. A finite element solution for a beam on elastic foundations was used to translate the above concepts into numerical results, these results being compared with data from Indian and Chinese operating conditions. The Indian case study examines the effect of using a conventional chock type of support in a one-web back mode when mining towards a roof break generated ahead of the face, while the Chinese case study compares measured subsidence over a longwall with "blocky" roof conditions with the model results. The comparisons are encouraging, suggesting that the approach used is worthy of further development.

Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in Southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately southeast of Cushenbury Canyon was the most prolific gold producer in Southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II when interest in the Lucerne Valley Limestone deposits was peaked by the construction of the Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, California. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone and Kaiser geologists located claims in most of the limestone deposits. Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon in 1956. Kaiser Cement modernized the facility in 1982 to a four stage preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April, 1988, and through further system modifications have created the most efficient and modern cement plant in the United States.

The recovery of fine coal has historically had limited success due to the intimate clay association on the surfaces of the coal particles. This clay presence has detrimentally affected conventional beneficiation techniques resulting in a recovered product containing unacceptably high concentrations of ash and moisture. An ultrasonically activated tray that operates in a continuous fashion has been developed that separates the clay film from each particle's surfaces. This separation is of sufficient duration to allow conventional beneficiation techniques to be utilized more efficiently.
