Polish power industry is based on brown and hard coal combustion and transferring the heat into electric power. Over 99% of lignite is used as a fuel in power plants. Lignite is mined on in open pits. Therefore very deep (for example 300 m in Belchatow open pit) excavations having great volume are formed. Thus such type of mining has the impact on land degradation. In order to reduce this effect, at the earliest possible moment the cap rocks are dumped in the pit but at the safe distance from the mining face. Due to the big amounts of lignite delivered to the power plant, there are shortages of solids for filling the pit after completing the mining operations. Geotechnical properties of dumped combustion by-products depend on the lignite type, combustion technology and ashes haulage methods. The paper presents lignite combustion methods used in Poland and their impact on properties of ashes and methods of their transport determining the parameters of dumped wastes. Geotechnical, physical and chemical test results concerning transport and deposition of hydraulically active ashes from the Belchatów power plant are presented. The critical role of geotechnical properties in selecting the deposition technology and post mining management of open pit excavations was showed. The importance of filling the post-mining spaces for restoration the useful function of brown fields and for neutralization of negative effects of mining activity, was underlined.

Theoretical research, laboratory tests and practical experience confirm the possibility to stabilise the excavated tunnel front by suitably composed slurries even in coarse ground with extremely high permeability. The fluid assures dependable repartition of the pressure, low torque of the cutting wheel and small perturbances of the original ground structure. Very easy access to the front, for tool repair or removal of obstacles, are other features of the WF-Hydroshield concept. For soft ground, the Hydrojet (excavation by immersed slurry jets) permits still further improvements. Field experiences in very mixed face conditions are related. Measured soil subsidences in homogeneous, loose sands above Hydroshield-driven tunnels are compared to calculated values. Dependable shield tail seals, which are a necessary condition for work without compressed air in the tunnel, and an original repair kit are presented. The aim to liberate shield driving from hazards of narrowly defined soil conditions and to broaden the range of applications led to a series of bentonite shield machines, derivated from the initial slurry type, such as Dense Mud Shield, Earth Pressure Balance Shield or shields with hard rock cutterheads. Similar to these constructions, overall stability of the front was the major concern in developing the Hydroshield. Flocculation of coal fines with varying degrees of wettability was studied under well defined hydrodynamic conditions. In this study, three coal samples were tested with three different flocculant types. The results revealed that flocculation depends strongly on both the coal surface properties and the type of flocculant used. A hydrophobic flocculant was found to be effective for hydrophobic and slightly oxidized coal, a semihydrophobic flocculant was found to flocculate, to different extents, all of the samples except the oxidized cool, and polyacrylimide flocculated all of the coals, which is a clear indication of its insensitivity towards coal wettability.

Abstract - This paper examines the ventilation network problem from a view point of solving a system of B equations in B unknowns, where B is the number o f branches in the network. Based on Kirchhoff s current and voltage laws, the solution to the general ventilation network problem must satisfy B network equations. In this paper, the air quantities and control-device pressures are chosen as variables and are grouped into B dependent variables (unknowns) and B independent variables, resulting in a system of B equations in B unknowns. Based on whether their variables are dependent or independent, the network branches are classified into f our types: five d, non-fixed, p-fixed, and q fixed. The ventilation network problem may include all four types of branches. There are .some conditions under which the problem as defined in this manner does not have a unique solution. To have a unique solution, the Jocabian matrix of the equations m us! he nonsingular. It then follows that: • the number of branches with independent air quantities must be less than or equal to the number of chords with respect to a spanning tree; •the subnetwork of branches with independent air quantities must not contain any cutset; and •the suhnetwork of branches with dependent control-device pressures must not contain any cutset. These three conditions must be met regardless of the values for the variables. In addition to the problem formulation, a solution procedure applying the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method is outlined and illustrated with an example problem.

The Cannon Mine gold project has been perceived as unique for being developed in an area characterized by orchards and suburban residences. The Cannon Mine was permitted and developed successfully in this setting. However, the ability of companies to permit, develop and operate mines in mated areas is becoming more difficult as a result of opposition by residents and increasingly stringent regulation. Definitions and Terminology Classification is defined within this section as the separation of solid particles into size or weight fractions or classes by differential settling through a fluid. It is usually thought of as a size separation, but is actually made on the basis of particle settling rate, and so is affected by any variations in particle density and shape. The fluid may be liquid (wet classification) or gas (dry or air classification). This section will treat only wet classification. There are two basic types of classification; pool and hydraulic. In pool classification a suspension of feed particles is fed into and out of a pool of some kind at such a rate that only part of them¬ the coarser and faster-settling part-has time to settle out. The remain¬der overflows as fines. In hydraulic classification the feed suspension is introduced into or above one or more columns or pockets through which water is rising at a controlled velocity. Coarse particles subside through the pockets and are removed through spigots. Those which settle slower than the rising velocity in any column or pocket are (at least ideally) prevented from subsiding and so must overflow. Hydraulic classifiers or sizers are capable of making far sharper sepa¬rations than pool classifiers. The force causing settling may be gravity, or alternatively may be from centrifugal acceleration as developed in a centrifuge or hydra cyclone. Two things are needed to characterize the separation produced by classification: first, the size, D„ or equivalently the screen mesh at which it is made; second the sharpness of separation. One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.

Methane drainage methods can be broadly classified as surface or underground. Surface methods make use of vertical and slant holes. The underground method discussed in the present paper involves horizontal drilling from shaft bottoms and from locations along the periphery of mines. Every foot of hole drilled in coal from under- ground locations is productive and gas flows increase as hole length increases. Therefore, underground techniques have a great potential for producing large-volume flows of methane. Pumps to dewater the horizontal holes are not necessary because gas pressure forces the water out of the hole. Methane can be recovered through the use of a simple and inexpensive gas-water separator. Hydraulic fracturing, which has been used successfully to stimulate gas flows from vertical holes, has not proved practical in the case of horizontal holes.

The upper Animas River watershed is affected by metal-rich drainage from abandoned mines and by natural weathering of mineralized bedrock. To investigate the importance of natural metal sources, surface waters were sampled in a minimally mined but intensely altered area of the watershed. Water chemistry was strongly controlled by the degree of bedrock alteration. Propylitically altered rocks, which contain calcite, produced neutral waters with low metal concentrations, whereas quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration was characterized by acid-sulfate type waters with high metal concentrations. Extensive deposits of high-calcium limestone occur in the Upper Mississippian Warsaw and Ste. Genevieve Limestones in the region of the lower Cumberland, Tennessee, and Ohio Rivers in western Kentucky. Analyses of foot-by-foot samples from 20 quarries and cores in 8 counties show variations between the chemical composition of high-calcium deposits in the 2 formations. Knowledge of probable variations in composition should aid in prospecting for high-calcium stone for a specific use and in evaluating potential deposits. High-calcium strata in the Warsaw consist of bryozoan- and crinoid-rich bioclastic limestones, and in the Ste. Genevieve, predominantly oolitic limestones. Values used for comparison were obtained by averaging the foot-by-foot analyses of each high-calcium deposit, 10 in the Warsaw and 15 in the Ste. Genevieve. Average MgCO3 and Fe2O3 contents are generally lower in the Warsaw than in the Ste. Genevieve. Average SO2, S, and P contents are- generally higher in the Warsaw. No characteristic differences are apparent between the average CaCO3 and A1203 contents of the two formations. The higher S and P contents of the Warsaw are believed attributable to the predominance of biogenic material in these limestones. Within the Warsaw Limestone, higher average S and A1203 contents and lower average Fe2O3 contents were found in deposits in the northern half of the region. In the Ste. Genevieve, vertical variations in composition occur within individual high-calcium deposits containing oolitic and nonoolitic limestones. Lower average CaCO3 contents and higher average contents for the other constituents were found in the nonoolitic intervals.

The Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables of the Mexican government entered into an agreement with the United Nations in 1964 for the mineral exploration of a large area in Estado de Sonora, Mexico. The agreement called for a systematic exploration for copper in northern Sonora based on photogeologic mapping, aerial reconnaissance, and geochemical stream sediment sampling. The UN-CRNNR investigations resulted in the detection of anomalous copper values in sediment from the Arroyo Cruz de Cafiada. The anomaly was followed upstream to its source, which ultimately proved to be the La Caridad ore body (see Fig. 1). Soil copper and molybdenum values were found over a large area, and further detailed geologic and geophysical investigations were instituted of the anomalous area. David Coolbaugh was largely responsible for the follow-up work. An induced polarization (IP) survey found a roughly circular region of "highs" that coincided with a high soil copper anomaly. The circular anomalies ringed the topographic feature that ultimately was found to contain the Caridad ore body. Soil geochemical copper response over the ore body was subdued, because the soils were derived from a leached capping, whereas leaching in fringe areas that contained less veining was less intense. The ore body was also ringed by the typical high pyrite zone, and this was the anomaly detected by the IP survey. The UN began drilling in the fall of 1966. Eleven holes tested the IP-Cu geochemical high, but none were of commercial interest. The project was returned to the Consejo and was reviewed in the field by G.P. Salas and V.F. Hollister. It was found that the leached capping had not been tested by the past activities, and the Consejo elected to explore that area in 1967. The capping was evaluated by Salas and Hollister and drilling by the Consejo began in 1967. Commercial grade ore intercepts were found in the first hole. The Consejo drilled nine holes, of which eight were commercial. At least 90.7 Mt (100 million tons) of 0.8% copper were indicated by the Consejo in eight holes. In order to assist better countermeasures for ventilation control in normal/abnormal condition of mine ventilation network in real time, branch relation table derived from a macroscopic characteristic of ventilation network is introduced in this study. The main results in this study are as follows; 1) One of macro characteristics of a ventilation network, as a relation between airflow rates in two branches chosen arbitrarily, is specified under the change of aerodynamic resistances in a branch. Airflow rate in a branch can be estimated by airflow rate in other branch changing aerodynamic resistance by using empirical formula. The empirical formula by computer simulation of the Horonai coal mine, Japan is considered to be a one-valued function with monotone or extremums. 2) A branch relation table shows the macro characteristics, mentioned above, of all the set of two-branch combinations in a network. Elements in the table give both information of control possibility range of airflow rate and total number of extremums in an empirical formula. 3) It is important that when aerodynamic resistance change in a branch is estimated by measuring airflow rates in two typical branches, the two branches should be chosen from branch combinations with monotonous relation in the branch relation table. 4) A flexible expert system to assist ventilation control in the specified branch in real time has been developed by using a branch relation table for a ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch, such a coal face and an advancing face. A fuzzy reasoning is utilized in the recognition of the safety factor, methane concentration, in the system. And when conviction degree in recognition for methane concentration at the specified branch is too low, the system searches for other branch combinations in the branch relation table stored in the system, to use other ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch. When a needed ventilation transfer diagram is not stored in the system, the expert system asks automatically the ventilation simulation from other computers linked to the main computer automatically. The system repeats consultation until conviction value of safety in the specified branch approached

The use of natural stones like marble is approximately as old as the emergence of human. Marble and natural stone usage of Turkey also dates back to very old times. Marble is produced in Anatolia since the ancient times. The archaeological excavations made in Anatolia indicate that the modern methods that are used for the production of marble blocks in modern world were first used by Anatolian people. Turkey is one of the oldest natural stone producers with its 4000 years of production history, starting from the Marmara Island. Therefore, the territory of Turkey possesses 4000 years of natural stone processing technology and experience. Turkey has fairly richer reserves of marble compared to other countries. This is why the rich and quality marble deposits of Turkey are resembled to the appearance of the Alpine-Himalayan marble belt of the world. Turkey has almost 40% of the total marble reserves (13.9 billion tones) of the world with 5.2 billion tones. Turkey?s marble reserve?s monetary value is worth about 2 trillion dollars. However, only 1% of these reserves are currently being utilized.

This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle's initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

To evaluate the influence of uniformly tensioned roof bolts on roof stability, mechanically anchored roof bolts were installed using the conventional bolter and a specially developed thrust and torque controlled retrofitable box mounted on a bolting machine. Thirteen thousand bolts were installed over 19 crosscuts in a 4 heading development in an operating coal mine. Geological , bolt and mine parameters were recorded at bolt installation, and bolt tension histories, roof sag and other changes evident in the rooms, crosscuts and intersections were recorded over a 2 month period. In all, 24 variables and 11 responses were quantified at 67 bolt clusters. These data were analyzed statistically to determine the significant variables influencing roof stability. As the mine development was safe and stable during the monitoring period, roof sag after two months was used as an index to quantify "stability." The variables of significance were shown to be coefficient of variation of bolt tension, bolt anchorage capacity, roof lithology, roof shape, standard deviation of bolt tension, and dip of roof lithologies. It was concluded that of the variables with which the mine operator has control, bolt tension uniformity was the most significant parameter at this mine. Other variables, such as intersection type and time between mining and bolting , were not significant, whereas, some other potentially significant variables such as horizontal stress or roof joint frequency did not vary sufficiently for their influence on stability to be evaluated.

This report describes a process for tungsten recovery from Searles Lake brines and upgrading its concentration to useful levels. The method consists of a combination of a liquid-solid and liquid-liquid extraction step and results in a product stream containing more than l00g W03/1. This technique is also effective in substantially reducing the concentration of objectionable impurities in the tungsten product. An ion exchange extraction mechanism is postulated.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen's formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. Coal degradation is the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes due to the continuous forces of attrition and gravity to which coal is subjected during mining, handling, and preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine the extent of degradation that a coal slurry experiences when transported through pumps and pipelines. The examination of degradation results for a number of different coal slurries have indicated that the extent of breakage is dependent on the physical properties of coal and the time span of circulation. These results have also indicated that certain size fractions of coal are more susceptible to breakage than others.

The author has seen an increased use of shaft-mounted, right angle drive assemblies. These designs use the pulley shaft as its 'foundation" and can create significant overhung loads. To reliably perform, the pulley and shaft must be designed for these special requirements. This paper will focus on the development of overhung loads and their design effects. Special considerations to maximize performance will be presented and comparisons with other drive options will be made. Experience in heavy mining applications will be used throughout.
