A study was conducted to investigate the use of flotation in combination with dense-medium cycloning utilizing ultrafine (-10 um) magnetite, as an integrated process for high-efficiency cleaning of fine coal. The objective was to produce a high-quality (low-ash, low-sulfur) coal, while reducing the amount of non-magnetic material that would need to be removed by magnetic separation. Three dense-medium cyclone tests were performed using different underflow diameters to produce feed material for the flotation separations The use of different underflow configurations caused a variation in the pulp and solids splits, which changed the clean-coal yield and the magnetite-to-coal ratio of the cyclone products, and hence, the composition of the flotation feed. Flotation was used to separate the clean coal and to recover the magnetite contained in the cyclone overflow stream. Any ultrafine refuse material, which may have reported to the cyclone overflow stream, was also removed in this step, further upgrading the product. In addition, flotation was used to improve the overall yield by recovering a middlings fraction from the cyclone underflow stream. It was found that flotation was very effective in separating the coal (or middlings) from the ultrafine magnetite, even under variable feed conditions. Magnetite recoveries approaching 99% were possible using rougher-cleaner separations in a laboratory flotation cell. This paper presents the results from this study.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) provides for the unparalleled ability to ensure the safety of the workers, the public and the environment. Although small spatially, the system can vary the airflow from 31.2 to 217.1 m3/s (66,000 to 460,000 cfm). The system can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and they can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote-monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based real-time mine-ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

Mining is one of the oldest profession and second after agriculture. Unfortunately Mining is not so familiar in the society. Due to lack of recognition in the society, existence of mines in remote places and in dusty and humid working conditions, led the poor response for mining engineering. Mining engineering programs have been increasingly less attractive to the student population over the years due to negative image of mining industry. After graduating in mining engineering, there is not much problem of employment at present. In the last 10 to 15years most of the mining engineering graduates have joined software industry. Even those joined in mining industry also left with in 2 years of service. The main reason for this is not being satisfied with job, it is not only working conditions but also work environment, work culture, remote location of the mines etc. Though many were trying to leave mining profession, the recent economic slow down has prompted some of them to incline towards job safety and retained to mining job. At this juncture a systematic study was taken up to analyze the job satisfaction of mining engineers in India.

In 1981, a gas outburst accident occurred in the Yubari Shintanko coal mine, the only expectant mine in Japan, it caused 93 deaths. As a result, Yubari Shintanko closed in 1982. This major disaster was a turning point for sustainability of Yubari City, the largest coalfield in Japan. Finally, Yubari City was bankrupted in 2007. This paper aims to explore how miner’s children experienced this disaster and felt about region, family, and themselves, and to explain the relation between region declining and children’s lives. The data of this paper are the archived 600 essays, written by the junior high school students at the time of the disaster. There are three findings. First, the children who lost their father were the most shocked. They faced profound sadness. But they expressed that they had decided to overcome their sadness with surviving family. Second, the children who didn’t lose their father were also influenced. They were anxious about the future of Yubari, their family, and themselves. Furthermore, they decided to strive for their future. Third, they understood the disaster as a turning point of Yubari declining and looked ahead their future outside of Yubari. In conclusion, this disaster created their hopelessness to Yubari region and, as a result, promoted the decline of the city through their migration to other city. Furthermore, it is important to clarify that Yubari City has to continue the struggle to the regeneration.

Computer techniques for open-pit limit analysis were introduced into Kennecott Copper Corp. (KCC) during the early 1960's. The first computerized approach used block matrix mineral and economic models, and a removal increment mining simulator. A detailed description of the approach was published in the May issue of Mining Engineering (Carlson, et al., 1966) and also in Chapter 30.3 of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Pana and Davey, 1973). Since then, many refinements have been made to improve the system and the resulting pit limit design. The fundamentals, however, generally remain unchanged. Computerized open-pit limit analysis is presently used by Kennecott's open-pit copper properties and by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corp. The system and the fundamental evaluation techniques it represents are cornerstones of all open-pit mine planning activities within KCC. This case study describes a typical example of open-pit limit analysis within KCC. The case involves a copper sulfide porphyry deposit with additional minor amounts of molybdenum, gold, and silver. The ore-grade mineralization within the pit design will be mill feed for a sulfide ore concentrator, and subore grade mineralization will be classed as waste and placed on dumps. The contributions to production and profits from dump leaching are insignificant, having minimal effect on the pit economics and design, because the material responds poorly to leaching solutions.

Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are. the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread- sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin.

Two low water flux test covers were placed on acid generating waste rack dumps at the Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia The climate is semi arid with distinct wet/dry seasons. The present study was initiated to develop a cover system to restrict infiltration. The design of the cover required optimization of water storage and evapotranspiration. Instrumentation was installed on both dumps to measure infiltration, moisture conditions and climatic parameters. Field measurements over the last three years indicate that both covers are performing satisfactorily. Selection of the final cover for closure is described on the basis of these results.

A series of laboratory based push and pull tests were carried out to investigate how surface profile influence the load transfer mechanism of bolt/resin interface. Tests were carried out in both 75 mm and 150 mm long steel sleeves. Three types of bolts were examined, they were bolts most commonly used for strata reinforcements in underground coal mines in Australia. The bolts had near equal core diameter but of different profile configurations. The change in the length of the encapsulation sleeve was examined in light of the small number of profiles encapsulated effectively in short 75 mm long sleeves. The results showed that peak loads and displacements were directly related to the height and the spacing of the bolt surface profiles. Profile spacing appears to have greater influence on load transfer capacity than the profile height.

The coal mines monitoring should be based on the usage of simple and evident models, letting in the total unity to reflect a structure of organization of mine, system ability of its construction and specific character of its functioning. Such models are offered to create on the basis of extracted hierarchies of objects of mine. All objects of mine are broken on levels of technological hierarchy. For objects of each level of hierarchy there are made balanced models of entering and leaving material flows. Then these balanced models are coordinated among themselves by the help of the inter hierarchical relations. So the structured-qualitative characteristic of the object of monitoring, reflecting in a kind of the table structure of formation of material flows on mine, their intensity and measure of transformation is formed under transition from one level of hierarchy of mine to another. An example of real us- age of hierarchical balanced models on mine is given. The mathematical models of coal mine monitoring should reflect objective laws of their structural organization and functioning. Therefore under the constructing of mathematical models it is important such a way to reflect a structure of the mine organization, that in totality the models has been reproduction of system ability of its construction. The knowledge of the separate parties of functioning of mine, reflected in particular mathematical models, should "to be packed" in combined unity. Or else, they should be connected in system, convenient for recognition by the person. Considering the mine, the expert allocates multi-dimensionality of the objects of making its elements. He always has the knowledge of laws of development of mining work that is connected with pithy stratification of researched object. In dependence of sparial-temporary level of abstracting there are allocated the horizon, wing of a mine field, layer, panel, extracting face, longwall in coal mine. The human thinking on each of these levels operates with a set of concepts peculiar to him, characteristics, definitions.

INTRODUCTION Mobile excavating and handling equipment are important 'tools of trade' in the mining and construction industries. The handling of this equipment must be mastered so that its limitations are learned and its harmonic use with other pieces of equipment is practiced. he sudden growth in mobile excavating and handling equipment type, size, complexity, and application started after the Second World War. This growth has not been accompanied by pertinent human factors research. Investigations into the proper and safe handling of such equipment with due regard for human and machine limitations are lacking. One such piece of equipment is the front-end loader (FEL), which during one cycle of operation excavates, loads, and hauls, (Lotfi and Adler, 1981). The diversity of action by FEL is archetypical among excavating and handling equipment. Front-end loaders are the most rapidly proliferating type of equipment in the industry. Also, front-end loaders are involved in the highest number of accidents involving mobile excavating and handling equipment. In the period 1970 to 1978, FEL's were involved in 27% of all mobile equipment accidents in surface mining (Adkins, 1980). Improving operational safety and efficiency will reduce the frequency of accidents. The performance of the operators can be evaluated and improved by the following steps: first, define the operating conditions and the operator workload intensity (Adler and Lotfi, 1983), second, monitor the operator to evaluate his task performance, and third, make recommendations based on the findings. The stressful nature of the equipment operating task is an acknowledged fact (Field, 1980). However, a systematic measurement of stress evaluation is lacking. In this paper, methods for measuring mental stress and fatigue, are defined, the mental load which caused the stress is outlined, and stress measurement methods are proposed. INTRODUCTION Lesotho is a mountainous area of southern Africa from which water is to be exported in an extensive tunnel system, to industrial regions inland. The related tunnelling project has involved a num- ber of drives using tunnel boring machines [TBMs] to excavate about 100 km of 5 m diameter water tunnels [von Glehn and Bluhm, 1995). This paper describes the ventilation and cooling of some of the tunnel drives from both the operational and design points-of-view with a particular focus on heat generation. There were many common features in all of the drives but this paper is focused mainly on the Hlotse drive which was 18,4 km long. The drives were ventilated using forced ventilation systems to provide appropriate air flow throughout the tunnels and face zones. In addition, the Hlotse drive required refrigeration equip- ment which provided chilled water to the tunnel. While the sec- ondary ventilation systems play an important role in gas and dust handling, the paper concentrates on the primary ventilation and cooling issues. The ventilation of these tunnels was an exacting exercise be- cause: • Rock temperatures and geothermal heat flow were high. • TBMs with relatively high power ratings were used. • Diesel locomotives were used. • Drives were relatively long. • High altitude meant a low air density. An important feature was the simulation and monitoring of the ventilation and heat flow components and the project was characterised by analysis, monitoring and ongoing tactical decision-making throughout the progress. The thermodynamics of the systems were complex because there were many interactive effects and analyses were carried out using special computer pro- grams. The monitoring confirmed the accuracy of the models, and in this manner it was possible to confidently ensure healthy and safe working conditions and still minimise costs. Local ambient climate conditions range from temperatures higher than 35 "C in summer to below -10 OC in winter. Based on available statistical data and the thermal storage/damping effects in the system, design summer ambient conditions were taken as 15 OC/25 "C wet-bulb/dry-bulb. The barometric pressure was 80 kPa and due to the altitude, the ambient air density was only 0,9 kg/m3. The local Authority specified a maximum in-tunnel wet- bulb temperature [at any point] of 32,O OC and a mean wet-bulb temperature [from all locations] of 27,5 OC maximum. The maxi- mum height of ground cover above the tunnel was 1 200 m and the maximum virgin rock temperature was 41 OC; see Figure 1. Diesel dilution criteria specified by the local Authority was a minimum of 0.1 m3/s per rated kW of diesel engine. Other requirements related to gases such as CO, CO2, NOx and CH4 [and the need for intrinsically safe equipment] but these are not of direct relevance to this paper. The actual average face advance was about 30 m/d with good days achieving 60 m/d and good months achieving 1 000 m [23 working days]. The original design tunnelling rate was 50 m/d. DESCRIPTION OF HLOTSE DRIVE VENTILATION AND COOLING SYSTEM The ventilation requirements in the tunnels were dictated by heat and diesel dilution needs. The best ventilation and cooling policy is generally a balance between using increased quantities of fresh air or refrigeration [or both]. In this particular scenario it turned out that, since the diesel emission criteria required large quantities of air, the refrigeration needs were modest. The drive was ventilated using a ducted, forced ventilation system from fans located at the portal. The maximum ventilation requirement was 51 m3/s when the drive was at 18.4 km. From a heat flow point of view, the worst scenario was a heat load of 3.5 MW when the drive was at 7 km. This was cooled by the ventilation air and a supply of chilled water to the tunnel. Refrigeration and chilled water system In the design phase, a detailed comparison was carried out between two general alternatives for providing refrigeration. First, was a system in which refrigeration sets and air coolers are installed on the TBM train; the refrigeration sets are cooled by condenser water piped to and from cooling towers at the portal. Second, was a system in which refrigeration water chillers are in- stalled at the portal and chilled water is piped into the tunnel. The detailed comparison indicated that the capital and running costs of the second system were at least 60 % lower than the in-tunnel plant. There were also many obvious practical benefits for favouring the portal system. The refrigeration plant supplied 23 11s of cold water at a temperature of 10 OC. After providing the cooling effect in the drive, the water returned to the portal where it was initially cooled in open-circuit evaporative pre-cooling towers, chilled in the refrigeration plant and then returned to the tunnel. The cold water flowed into the tunnel in an insulated supply pipe and returned in an uninsulated pipe; the water was simply circulated to the end of the pipe and returned. The cooling effect in the tunnel was achieved entirely through heat transfer from the pipe [long linear heat exchanger] and no air coils or other heat exchangers were required. The cooling requirements were satisfied by the heat transfer to the returns chilled water steel pipe [200 mm]. The pipes were eventually installed to a maximum distance of 10,8 km in what was considered a very practical and cost effective solution.

INTRODUCTION Mine waste monitoring and management is essential when the industry is being required to accept the environmental liability for all generated, stored and disposed solid and hazardous waste. Environmental regulations mandate the operator to minimize waste production while requiring the operator to cleanup existing contamination. Since these requirements are being enforced, many operators do not have a clear under- standing, whether their existing operation will or could be required to adopt remedial plans to mitigate off-site contamination impacts. The following methods, using conventional and advanced geostatistical methods, provide a tool to make appropriate assessments whether existing or potential contaminant issues are present. BACKGROUND Generated solid wastes from mining operations are currently exempt from Solid Waste Disposal Act (SWDA) Sub- title C (RCRA), statutes and promulgated regulations, however, compliance with SWDA Subtitle D statutes and regulations is required. In order for the mining operator to be exempt from hazardous waste regulations, the operator must demonstrate that generated waste does not have hazardous waste characteristics. In many instances the operator will be able to use statistical tools and their existing data to determine whether their site could be a potential hazardous waste liability. METHODS The following statistical and geostatistical methods can be used to determine whether existing wastes could be a regulatory concern. The following presents a brief discussion of standard statistical methods and discusses, in greater detail, how advanced geostatistical tools can be used to define potential waste issues. The following will discuss how data can be screened, "Data Filtering and Reporting"; how data can be evaluated using "Conventional Statistics"; followed by a detailed discussion o f "Geostatistical and Estimation Techniques" and "Statistical Modeling". Data Filtering and Reporting Data filtering is the simplest, but potentially the most powerful statistical tool because data can be easily sorted to meet regulatory reporting requirements. Filtering includes unions and intersections of data such as date, maximum and minimum values of one or several variables. Using the data base presented in "Mine Waste Data Base Management Procedures", Robinson and Hagar, 1987, an example of a filter group is presented.

The Tilden Mine is an iron ore mining, processing and pelletizing facility located on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It has a designed capacity to produce 8 million long tons of pellets annually from 21 million long tons of crude. It is a partnership owned by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Algoma Steel Corporation, LTV Steel Corporation, the Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling Pitts- burgh Steel Corporation and the Sharon Steel Corporation. Cleveland- Cliffs manages and operates the Tilden. The crude ore averages 35% iron and is primarily non-magnetic iron oxide and silica. The major ore mineral is martite. Hematite, earthy hematite, goethite and magnetite are also present. The principal gangue mineral is chert. The ore grains are mostly in the 10 to 25 micron size range which necessitates very fine grinding for liberation. The concentrating process is the most complex one used in the iron ore industry. The unique technology for Tilden was developed in the mid and late 60's. The design and construction occurred in the early 70's and operation of the first phase which was of 4 MLTPY capacity began in October. 1974. Expansion of the facility to the current 8 MLTPY capacity was completed in 1979. Chemicals are the key to the beneficiation process at the Tilden Mine. The flowsheet utilizes selective flocculation - desliming, cationic silica flotation and concentrate dewatering by thickening and filtering. Nine different process chemcals are used. The control of the reagent feed systems is highly auto- mated. The entire concentrator is operated from a central control room. The concentrator flow diagram is presented in figure 1. The plant consists of 12 primary autogenous grinding lines, a common crushing circuit to handle an intermediate product within the primary grinding section, 24 pebble mill lines with cyclones and deslime thickeners, 12 flotation lines, 4 concentrate thickeners and slurry tanks, 8 lines of filters with six machines per line, and 2 tailings thickeners. A pumping system was installed in 1980 to permit the direct return of tailings thickener overflow water back to the reuse water pumphouse.

A number of interactive graphic microcomputer programs have been written that aid in the design process in the academic arena and should also have industrial applications. The programs described include a drag-line cut diagram and production index calculation program, a downslope load scraper cut diagram and volume program, and an overburden volume and coal tonnage sequencing program.

The State of Queensland, Australia, designates aggregate resource areas as Key Resource Areas, which protect the resource and the routes to transport the resource, provide a separation area from incompatible land uses, and indicate the likelihood that the area is free from conflicting social or environmental issues.

The purpose of this paper is to use the material composition of product to show the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

This research came about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small-diameter bored raises (less than 150 cm). Currently, an operator must go down the raise and apply the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small-diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

This investigation is an exploratory study to evaluate a large number of potential pyrite depressants for use during coal flotation. Subsequently, the more promising reagents can be evaluated in detail. Several reagent categories (such as alkalis, lime, oxidizing agents, reducing agents, specific inorganic ions and dispersants) that were found to be effective pyrite depressants are discussed here. Other pyrite depressants will be discussed in Parts II and III.
