In December of 1999, Newmont Mining Corporation’s Eastern Nevada Operations commissioned its commercial biooxidation facility. The commercial biooxidation facility is a refractory gold whole ore heap process that uses bacteria to assist with the oxidation of sulfide minerals thus liberating occluded gold for further processing by cyanide for gold extraction. Before the commercial biooxidation facility was started, a decade of research went in to developing this state-of-the-art process. During final design and construction of the commercial facility a decline in gold price necessitated cost saving and project scope changes. As a result, the biooxidation process experienced many challenges. Some of the more significant challenges include poor heap permeability due to haul truck stacking, unhealthy bacteria population due to a lack of solution aeration, and insufficient biooxidation time because of limited pad space and high carbonate content in the ore. This paper discusses the many challenges encountered and addressed during the first 2-3 years of commercial biooxidation operation.

Previous research on continuous mining operations has shown that significant interactions exist between dust-control parameter application and the resulting respirable dust levels. However, simply increasing the level of the controls does not guarantee a reduction in respirable dust levels. Full-scale laboratory tests are being conducted to provide information to longwall operators that would assist them in selecting control parameters to reduce dust levels for mine-specific conditions. The interactions between face air velocity, shearer water quantity, drum water spray pressure, external water spray pressure and spray system design were evaluated in a simulated 2.13-m (7 ft) coal seam for two cutting directions. Locations around and downwind of the shearer were monitored to evaluate relative changes in respirable dust levels as a function of each control parameter.

Experiences gained using computers in the mining and geological environment have shown that it is quite rare for a system or the data it stores to be truly stand alone. Just as the mining enterprise aims to have a smooth integration of operations from exploration through mining and extraction to sales, so it should develop all its information systems within an overall framework or architecture which covers the applications and data as well as the computer hardware and communications. This paper discusses methods of achieving such an architecture, and describes some of the benefits it can have on the development and implementation of information systems. The key aspects are the identification of the business functions and the data that they use, and ensuring that the IS plan supports the overall objectives of the enterprise. Hardware and communications policies should be based on the plans for the applications and data, rather than the reverse.

A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., generates a jarosite waste at its Risdon smelter. Since 1974 this waste has been disposed of at sea off south-east Tasmania. As part of a monitoring programme prescribed by the Australian Government, bottom sediments from the disposal zone are monitored regularly. QEM*SEM image analysis complements conventional chemical analysis, having the ability to partition the occurrence of an element between sediment particles of metallurgical and natural origin. The adaptation of QEM*SEM techniques to the evaluation of bottom sediments provides insight into the fate of the particles of jarosite waste.

One of the major objectives of cost analysis is to enable the manager to predict the financial outcomes of decisions. To accomplish this, the future costs and benefits of alternative courses of action must be determined. If care- fully used, information about past financial performance can be helpful in this analysis despite the fact that, by definition, financial reporting information is historical. In many cases, both revenues and costs need to be estimated for decision- making. For the production manager, additional revenue is a result of increased throughput or recovery of valuable material from the stream of mined material. A reduction in operating cost, although similar to a revenue increase in its financial impact, is estimated using slightly different techniques. Generally, the estimation of cost is more difficult than the estimation of revenue. Most cost estimates have two components: an estimate of fixed costs and an estimate of variable costs. As discussed in chapter 5, the total cost of an activity during a specified period can be expressed as: Total cost = (Variable cost per unit of activity) x (Units of activity) + Fixed cost or TC = VX+F

Magnetic, electromagnetic, and radiometric airborne survey data have been used in regional and local (drainage basin) scales. In a regional geoenvironmental assessment of the state of Montana, magnetic and radiometric data compiled from airborne surveys were used along with other digital geologic and geochemical data to prioritize mining districts for potential acid water generation. Probability ratio mapping was done in order to integrate the interpretation of many different digital data sets. On a more local scale, the Animas (CO) and Boulder Basin (MT) watersheds have been studied using helicopter geophysical surveys. The airborne geophysical surveys show many more structural features than the geologic maps. Combined interpretation of the geophysical data sets using the probability ratio method has resulted in identification of areas of alteration. Airborne radiometric data in the Boulder Basin area suggests that rocks with high potassium and thorium also have a high acid water buffering capacity.

One aspect of long-range mine planning in an open-pit mine is first to define the ultimate pit limit, i.e., the projected size and shape of the pit at the end of its life. This chapter is concerned with various techniques that are currently in use today in determining the ultimate pit limits using the computer. Prior to the early 1960's, open-pit limits analyses were entirely performed manually. This manual technique has been well explained by Soderberg and Rausch in Surface Mining (1968). Soderberg and Rausch also explain clearly the need for establishing the ultimate pit limits in long-range mine planning, i.e., location of surface facilities, dumps, etc. Consequently, the need for ultimate pit limit design will not be reiterated here. Nor will the definitions of the most commonly accepted terminologies such as break-even stripping ratio, economic cutoff grade, ultimate and working slope angles, preproduction stripping, etc. be repeated here. Briefly, the objective of the ultimate pit limit design (which is also frequently referred to as pit design in short) is to determine the projected final pit limits of an ore body and its associated projected grade and tonnage, which will maximize some prespecified economic criteria while satisfying practical operational requirements.

The direct recovery of precious metals from a1kaline cyanide solution is frequently accomplished by the well-established Merrill-Crowe process involving zinc-dust cementation. This is particularly true for silver. Plant data from two operations are presented and analyzed in terms of intrinsic reaction features. In such Merrill-Crowe plants a plate-and-frame filter press acts as a semicontinuous fixed-bed reactor with a distribution of particle retention times. For the plants studied, 99Yo of the silver is recovered with a solution retention time of less than 2 min. Differences in plant operating conditions and product characteristics can be related to the nature of the surface deposit of silver which forms on the zinc particles. From laboratory experiments and plant samples it has been found that the presence of lead in the system activates a change in the silver deposit morphology to the dendritic state which affects the rate of silver deposition as well as the filter cake porosity. Finally the plate-and-frame press is considered from an engineering perspective as a semi- continuous fixed - bed reactor to describe the behavior of the system.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. Sealaska Corporation, the Alaska Native Regional Corporation of Southeastern Alaska, was organized under the laws of the state of Alaska pursuant to the federal Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Large areas of Sealaska's 630,000-acre (250,000 hectare [ha]) fee subsurface holdings are underlain by carbonate, and while much of this material is assumed to be common variety limestone and lesser dolomite, at least two areas in the Silurian Heceta Limestone contain high-quality limestone at tidewater. This limestone has many potential commercial uses. On northern Prince of Wales Island, about 90 miles (144 km) north-northwest of Ketchikan, resource development at Sealaska's Calder deposit has established a reserve of 13 mil- lion short tons (st) (12 million metric tonnes [mt]) of carbon- ate rock containing an average of greater than 98 percent CaC03, approximately 0.5 percent MgO, less than 0.5 per- cent Si02, and approximately 0.15 percent Fe203, with insolubles averaging less than 0.5 percent and an average Hunter Brightness of 92.07 for the -150 mesh grind (with a bright- ness cutoff of 90). The deposit is open at depth and to the south. Ultimate reserves will likely be several times those currently established. In 1998, Sealaska began mining the Calder deposit, with about 100,000 st (90,000 mt) produced, and also completed a marine terminal one half-mile (800 m) from the deposit. The terminal can load ships up to 680 feet (200 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. 0 m) in length at a rate of 2,000 st (1,800 mt) per hour. On Dall Island at Breezy Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Ketchikan, Sealaska has identified a limestone reserve in excess of 150 million st (135 million mt) that (based on 18 surface samples distributed evenly over about a section of land) contains about 98 percent CaC03, and less than 0.5 percent MgO, 0.5 percent Si02, and 0.15 percent Fe203. Brightness of the Breezy Bay carbonate is considerably less than at Calder. Five samples of brighter material from Breezy Bay returned brightness analyses in the high 80s and low 90s; average brightness is probably below the mid- 80s. Sealaska has also identified a deposit containing more than 19 million st (17 million mt) of similar rock near View Cove, a few miles south of Breezy Bay.

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

This paper presents a summary of the differences between paste and conventional tailings thickeners, along with recent examples of full-scale paste thickener installations.

Treatment of bentonite clay with mineral acids yields a modified clay product of high surface area and acidity that exhibits enhanced adsorptive and catalytic properties. A highly specialized segment of the clay industry based on this process has evolved into a worldwide business with a capacity of about 500 kt/a. This paper will present data on the chemistry, mining, manufacturing, and applications for acid-activated clays.

It is well known that the density and viscosity of a mill pulp have optimum levels for grinding efficiency, and sophisticated control loops are employed to control pulp density in industry. However, these control loops rely on a number of plant measurements, and often the input data will not permit effective determination and control of the mill pulp density. The use of a single remote pulp density measurement has obvious advantages, and it is suggested and demonstrated for laboratory batch grinding that mill noise measurements can indicate the effective density of the mill pulp. In addition, the mill noise is shown to indicate the actual effective pulp viscosity in the mill and hence permit the identification of the dynamic rheological regime existing in the mill. It is demonstrated that mill noise increases with grind time and, at any given grind time, with increasing pulp density in the pseudoplastic range. This increase in mill noise level with pulp density is interpreted as indicating a decreasing pulp viscosity. The results show that the transition from dilatant to pseudoplastic conditions within the mill, with increasing pulp density, can be identified by this increase in mill noise. When the pseudoplastic pulp started to exhibit yield characteris- tics, the mill noise fell dramatically. The technique of mill noise analysis is then used to investigate the effect of a grinding additive on the batch grinding of two ores. With a magnetite ore, the additive was shown to increase the mill noise, and hence decrease the pulp viscosity, in the pseudoplastic region and to increase the effective grinding. The molybdenite ore, however, did not show significant noise level changes and did not show improved grinding efficiency.

A combination field and office study of mining districts in Southwestern U.S.A., conducted in 1949 - 1950 by United Geophysical Company, embraced all of the essentials for a successful exploration project including factors such as geology water, transportation and many more. Perhaps the best known of several high priority areas chosen from the study was the Twin Buttes or Pima District in Arizona, however, the Turquoise District also ranked very high on this priority schedule. Following the discovery of the Pima Mine in 1951 and 1952, United initiated additional preliminary geological, geophysical, drilling and claim location work in the Turquoise District, but stopped shortly thereafter, when ASARCO began adjoining competetive activity. During the summer of 1957, sometime after ASARCO abandoned their claims in the area, Minerals Exploration Company began intensive exploration in the Courtland-Gleeson part of the District. This program was terminated in 1958. Later Bear Creek Mining Company supplemented the discovery endeavor with their own program during the period 1960 through 1962. This paper summarizes most of the geophysical work done by all of the groups except ASARCO and is intended to complement the recent paper "General Geology and Some Structural Features of the Courtland-Gleeson Area, Cochise County, Arizona" by Mr. Otis McRae of Bear Creek Mining Company.

Methane ignitions continue to be a major concern to the longwall mining industry. In spite of numerous advances in technology over the past decade, there has not been a measurable reduction in the number of longwall face ignitions. These ignitions will continue to be a problem as deeper and gassier seams are mined, as production rates are increased through numerous improvements in longwall mining equipment, and as the output of the workforce increases due to improved management-labor relations. It is necessary to know methane liberations, emissions, and flow patterns in order to effectively deal with it and to design control technology to reduce the occurrence of longwall face ignitions. A cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) has been established to address longwall methane problems. The initial direction of this work was to look at methane flow patterns during the entire longwall mining process, and more specifically to examine and compare methane levels and flow patterns for advance and retreat methods of longwall mining. Both advance and retreat longwall mining is practiced in the Sydney coal fields in Nova Scotia. In 1986, a study was performed on advancing longwall panels at the Lingan Colliery, and a similar study was recently completed at the Phalen Colliery on a retreating panel. Methane monitors were placed at various locations along the face, intake, return, and bleeder airways. Handheld methane monitors were also used upstream and downstream of the shearer mining machine. This setup allowed a determination of methane sources on the longwall panels, including: liberation from cutting with the shearer mining machine, emissions from the coal seam along the face, emissions from the gob area, and methane already in the intake air. The results from both studies are reported and the differences between the two longwall mining methods compared.

"There have been about 42 fatalities in underground coal mines between 1984 and 2015 where the victim was struck, pinned, or run over by a mobile machine (MM) such as a shuttle car, scoop, or battery hauler. MSHA has issued a proposed rule requiring proximity detection systems (PDS) on MMs in an effort to prevent future fatalities. Currently approved PDSs use electromagnetic (EM) technology to detect the presence of a miner and impose machine controls to prevent contact. The disadvantages of an EM-based PDS on MMs include the need for a miner-wearable component (MWC), environmental interferences, EM interferences from other devices, and low localization range and accuracy. NIOSH researchers are investigating alternate technologies that could improve the capabilities of the current PDSs. Many technologies were reviewed, and NIOSH researchers identified RFID, LIDAR, RADAR, ultrasonic detection, and computer vision as candidates for PDS development. The performance characteristics of each technology and its applicability to an underground mining environment will be discussed, along with international developments and implementations, and the concept of sensor fusion. INTRODUCTION PDSs provide safety to mine workers by detecting their presence (and in some cases location) around a machine. These PDSs provide a warning zone, which triggers an alarm, and a stop zone, which halts the machine before it contacts the miner. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued a final rule requiring that PDSs be installed on all continuous mining machines (CMMs) on the working section, with the exception of full-faced machines, according to a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment [1]. The PDSs that were designed for CMMs have since been adapted to other mobile machines. Mobile machines include scoops, which are used as general utility vehicles, as well as coal hauling machines, such as shuttle cars, ram cars, and continuous haulage systems. MSHA has examined all accident reports from 1984 to 2014, and determined that 42 fatalities could have been prevented on mobile machines had a PDS been installed [2]. As such, MSHA issued a proposed rule that would require mobile machines on working sections (with the exception of longwall sections) to be equipped with a PDS. This rule would follow a phase-in schedule for newly manufactured and existing equipment. Currently available PDSs are based on electromagnetic (EM) technology. NIOSH researchers developed a shell-based magnetic flux density distribution model [3] for determining the position of a miner near a machine. A typical system would consist of four generators positioned around the perimeter of the machine. Each generator is a coil of insulated wire wrapped around a ferrite core. The magnetic field strength is proportional to the current running through the coil. Miners working on the section have an MWC, which is a transceiver that measures the field strength emitted by the generators and transmits a data packet over an RF link which contains the field strength reading to the PDS controller mounted on the machine. The magnetic field generators are pulsed sequentially such that the MWC can identify which generator’s field strength it is reading. This type of system utilizes the principle of magnetic flux density: the closer the MWC is to the field generators, the higher the field strength reading. Thus a miner’s presence can be determined once he gets too close to the machine, because his MWC will measure a magnetic flux density beyond a certain threshold. These thresholds are utilized on a per-generator basis to “shape” the fields for both warning and stop zones around a machine, as illustrated in Figure 1."

For the purpose of examining a specific problem, it is important that we look at the context, to obtain an appreciation of the general area of which the particular problem forms a part. It is my task today to speak on a particular relationship between the nations of Canada and the United States of America. What is the background? Almost two hundred years ago we both belonged to a family of nations -- the British Empire. There was a serious family quarrel in 1776 and the United States left the family and set out to make its own independent way in the world. Canada, which was not as grown up as the united States, remained with the mother country, and in 1812 resisted a vigorous attempt by the United States to get it to leave home too. With the passing of the years the bitterness of that family quarrel has faded and, aside from occasional differences, we have been getting along very well ever since.

Phelps Dodge Mining Company operates some of the world’s largest open pit mines. Safely mining in these deep pits requires the commitment to a proactive integrated slope management process. The slope management process also includes the continued look for improved slope design, construction, and maintenance of slope faces. This paper discusses integration of such technology as electronic programmable detonators, 3D imaging using ground-based LiDAR scans, and reflectorless slope monitoring systems in a slope management program.
