This paper presents several case studies in which a mechanics-based boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, which incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general-purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin-seam or vein-type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from this work show that the LAMODEL program is not as accurate as available empirical subsidence-predictive methods; the expected correlation between the geology and the optimum input parameters is not evident. However, for a mechanics-based program, LAMODEL does provide moderately accurate subsidence calculations, and it is one of a few programs that can even attempt to practically calculate both underground stress and convergence and the resulting surface subsidence.

An emerging technology for sustainable development in mineral development, tailings co-disposal™ is a means to dispose of conventional mill tailings within the void space of a waste rock dump. This method, while not applicable to all tailings systems, can offer a significant reduction in short-term and long-term environmental liability, land disturbance, closure costs, and negative public image. The concept is to dispose of the tailings simultaneously with the waste rock or leach ore, controlling the ratio of tailings to coarse material such that the resulting dump is stable both physically and chemically. The resulting co-disposal dump can be as safe as a conventional waste dump. In the case of alkaline tailings in a potentially acidic waste dump, the acid production can be buffered or slowed.

1984 saw the 30th anniversary of a momentous event in Soviet geology-the discovery of kimberlites in Siberia, an event that vaulted the Soviet Union to second rank among the world's producers of both gem and industrial diamonds. There are many legends associated with this story, legends about those who predicted the discovery and those who achieved it in the field. The story told here unfolded during the field campaigns of the 1940s through 1960s, as witnessed by the authors and their companies of an earlier generation. This story illustrates science, chance, and human emotions at work, resulting in a blend of conviction, courage, bureaucratic sniping, and competition for glory. At the same time, it is an illustration of the workings of the Soviet exploration system. In a broader sense, it is the realization of the Russian image-boundless natural wealth, indomitable ingenuity, and the rigid political economic system that permeates the Russian landscape as well as the people. Most accounts of the Siberian diamond saga begin with statements such as, "This discovery confirmed the predictions of...", or "It was a result of predictions of one of the greatest Soviet geologists, Academician V.S. Sobelov...". These are only part of the truth. It had become apparent even in the 1930s that the Siberian Platform contained one of the Earth's greatest Basaltic provinces, described in a monograph by Sobolev...; and at the end of the thirties, G.G. Moor of the Institute of Arctic Geology found alnoites, similar in many ways to kimberlites. At the same time, the famous polar geologist, N.N. Urvantsev found other kimberlite like rocks in the southern Taymir Peninsula, adjacent to the Siberian Platform. In publications describing these rocks, Moor and Urvantsev mentioned for the first time the possibility of finding diamondiferous kimberlites similar to those in South Africa. Unfortunately, Urvantsev spent little time in the field between terms in concentration camps. Moor was considered by his superiors to be no more than a good descriptive petrographer; they suggested to him that his conclusions should be backed up by more highly regarded specialists. Thereupon, Moor asked Sobolev to coauthor a paper with him and this became the widely quoted prediction about diamonds in Siberia. Another early paper should also be mentioned, an unpublished paper found by M.I. Rabkin in the geological archives of the Norilsk Metallurgical Plant, written by Yu. M. Sheinmann when he worked in the concentration camp there in the late forties. This report placed the probable location of yet-to-be-discovered kimberlites within less than 100 km of their correct location.

Single-row bench blasts at a reduced scale in the field were used to study the effects of delay time on fragmentation. Nine shots with a spacing of 21 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 1.4) and nine shots with a spacing of 30 in. and a burden of 15 in. (S/B = 2.0) were completely screened to determine particle size distributions. Delay intervals between holes ranged from 0 to 45 msec, corresponding to effective delay intervals ranging from 0 to 36 msec per foot of burden. Each shot was instrumented with strain and pressure gages to measure in situ blast dynamics and to evaluate interactions between blastholes. Finer overall fragmentation was produced for shots with delay intervals between 1 and 17 msec per foot of burden. Only for shots within this optimum delay range was it observed that the strains induced by stress waves constructively interacted with strains induced by gas pres- sure from an earlier detonated hole. Coarsest fragmentation resulted at delay intervals less than 1 msec/ft, where stress waves from each hole were observed to interact destructively, and at delay intervals greater than 24 msec/ft, where no inter- action between holes was observed, indicating a condition that can be considered as the firing of single hole shots independently.

The coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been considered as the most serious health problem in the coal mining industry. The development of CWP in a worker lung depends on the average concentration and toxic components of the coal dust and the exposure length. Toxicity studies on coal dust shows the bio-available iron (BAI) in the coal dust plays an adverse role in the CWP development. It is also found that presence of calcite in the coal seams can significantly reduce the CWP cases as evidenced by the significant difference between the coal miners in the western and Appalachian coal regions. Based on this finding, it is proposed to artificially introduce calcite to BAI -containing coals in the effort to mitigate the CWP disease in coal industry. This paper introduces the scientific bases, the main geological factor that makes the differences, the proposed methods to introduce calcite to coal dust or to coal seams. Feasibility for the proposed methods is also discussed.

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

This paper is based on field studies in North American surface mines. The work involved the adaptation of microprocessor-based instrumentation to monitor various operating parameters on-board rotary blasthole drills and mining shovels. Following a review of instrumentation and monitoring methodology - drawing on experience gained under field conditions-the paper will focus on the application of monitoring technology within the framework of an Integrated Equipment Monitoring System. Such a system will permit real-time performance evaluation of key equipment involved in surface mine production. Drill performance monitoring has been demonstrated through work to date, to provide significant input into blast design, reserve estimation, mine planning and production control processes, through an improved facility for ground characterization. Monitoring excavation equipment has been proven valuable in assessing how effectively the input from drill monitored data has been used in the evolution of blast designs. This specifically refers to assessing blast efficiency through measuring associated levels of excavator performance in relation to muckpile characteristics. The medium-term goal of equipment instrumentation and monitoring has been to assist mines in optimizing the overall rock breakage and handling process. Based on the reported results, this has been accomplished. Long-term efforts now concern using a greater understanding of equipment performance and response to varying operating conditions as a foundation for the implementation of mining automation.

As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. A modeling scheme is developed to simulate the hydrogeologic effects of mine design and development in unsaturated rock. Simulations are conducted using the UNSAT2 finite element computer program and hydrogeologic data from the site of a proposed mined-out waste repository at Yucca Mountain, NV. Results of the simulations are analyzed for: •variations in the direction of ground water flow and in the distribution of pressure head caused by the design of the mined out openings; and •mine design variables that affect the predicted rates of mine water inflow. Evaluating the hydrogeologic impacts of mine design and mine development in unsaturated rock is significant in several respects. Characterization of the preemplacement of wastes along the fastest path ground water flow system at the Yucca Mountain site has been a primary research effort. Ultimately, however, the degree to which waste isolation is achieved will depend largely on the post-mining hydrogeologic environment as altered by the mine design and on the radionuclide inventory and resulting heat effects of the repository. Therefore, an ongoing characterization of the proposed mined-out nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, NV, is recommended. Modeling results indicate that: •mined out openings will affect the movement of ground water, both in rate and direction; •hydraulic effects of mine development depend on the hydrogeologic environment and on mine design geometry; •mine water inflow is possible in the unsaturated zone, even for mines developed in hydrogeologically homogeneous rocks; and •mine water inflow can occur at values of down ward flux that are appreciably less than the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the overlying rocks.

The Chamber of Mines of South Africa is an association of major mining corporations, gold mines, coal mines, diamond mines and other metalliferous mines. It looks after those interests of its members which can best be handled on a co-operative basis. The Chamber's activities include the engagement of labour; the negotiations of all labour matters, including minimum wage rates, with recognised trade unions and associations; the carrying out of advanced technological research; representing the industry in dealings with the government and the administration of miners' training colleges and rescue training stations. Subsidiary companies of the Chamber handle matters such as the refining of gold and other metals; the processing and marketing of uranium and the marketing of Krugerrands. The thirty-two gold mines members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa produce approximately 694 tons of gold per annum. To achieve this they employ 430000 persons and break about 8400 kilotons of rock per month. The working revenue is approximately 4 225 million US dollars per annum and the annual working profit is approximately 2 050 million US dollars. The electric power consumed by the gold mining industry is 1650 MW, about 20% of the total power produced in South Africa, and the annual costs of this power is approximately 200 million US dollars per annum. It is estimated that about 25% of this power is used for ventilation and refrigeration appliances. Thus the annual power costs for ventilation and refrigeration is approximately 50 million US dollars. The gold bearing reef is a narrow tabular deposit situated at varying depths throughout the gold fields. The weighted mean rock breaking depths and, virgin rock temperatures range from 1 700 - 9 000 ft (520 - 2 740 m) and 68 - 113°F (20 - 45°C) respectively. The maximum virgin rock temperature at which mining currently takes place is 130°F (54.5 C). Obviously at such depths and temperatures and with such a large labour force the provision of an acceptable environment is critical and to achieve this 59 000 000 cfm (28 000 m3/s) of air is downcasted during the main shift and 122500 tons (430 MW) of refrigeration are provided. Legislation in South Africa requires that on metalliferous mines when more than 1000 persons are employed underground during any one shift the manager shall appoint one or more ventilation officers. The legal responsibilities of the ventilation officers are concerned mainly with the measurement and control of dust. In practice, this is not the main part of their work and ventilation personnel perform many other duties such as measuring and controlling the distribution of air, checking the performance of fans and cooling plants, planning air and refrigeration requirements and, more recently, measuring and controlling noise and illumination levels. Ventilation personnel are specialists who provide management with advice on all matters relating to the mine environment. At the present time there are 506 persons engaged as ventilation personnel in gold mines and a further 1744 persons are employed in gold mine ventilation departments in a non-technical capacity, for example as construction workers, filter cleaners, fire patrollers, etc.

IT APPEARS that the phenomenon of ion exchange by which saline water was converted to sweet was known to Moses and Aristotle. However, the credit for the recognition of this process is generally attributed to Thompson (1850) and Way (1850), who reported that when a soil was treated with either ammonium sulfate or ammonium carbonate solution, most of the ammonia was adsorbed and calcium was released. It was later proved by Eichorn (1858) that the adsorption of ions from ground waters by clay constituents was a reversible process. The first attempts to utilize ion exchange phenomena was in the field of water softening around 1906, using natural and synthetic silicates. In 1935 Adams and Holmes in England observed that crushed phonograph records (phenol-formaldehyde and amine-formaldehyde resins) were capable of exchanging ions.

To allow recovery of gold values from ore which cannot be economically processed by the mill, Pinson Mining Company has developed a run-of-mine heap leaching facility. In order to estimate production scale recovery rates, reagent consumption and percolation problems, a series of pilot scale tests were performed. These tests typically consisted of 3,630 metric tons (mt) (4,000 tons) leach ore at a grade of .94 to 1.56 grams per metric ton (g/mt) (.03 to .05 oz.) Au/Ton. Test heaps were loader stacked to approximately 4.3 meters (14 feet) high. Information from these pilot scale tests was employed in the design and construction of the production scale facility. Parameters such as spray rate, leach cycle, sprinkler placement, and barren solution chemistry were determined by the pilot tests.

The fatty acid flotation process has been used to produce phosphate for decades, yet the chemical mechanism involved has never been thoroughly investigated. A basic knowledge of the process is lacking, and as such, industry has had to develop their own guidelines for the design and operation of conditioning and flotation equipment. These guidelines are the result of many trial and error attempts, and are not by any means universally endorsed. There are almost as many opinions about how to operate a plant as there are practitioners of the art. This paper covers the currently recommended rules for design as viewed by one practicing phosphate metallurgist.

Technical co-operation activities of the Department of Technical Co-operation for Development of the United Nations Secretariat have included the introduction of electronic data processing techniques in mineral sector projects for several years; computers have been provided to countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Advisory services are provided to interested developing countries at their request concerning applications for various uses in mineral sector activities. They include advice on appropriate hardware and software depending upon the requirements of the particular Government. The Department's activities in this area are described. The input from a Group of Experts on this subject convened by the United Nations, and their conclusions and recommendations, are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting batch and small- scale continuous laboratory studies on the biologically assisted removal of selenium from process waste waters. Mixed cultures of gram- negative bacteria isolated from several brackish water marshes are capable of reducing selenate [Se(VI)I to selenite [Se(IV)I and precipitating an amorphous elemental selenium product. Selenium extractions ranged from 80 to 96% regardless of the initial selenium concentration. The conditions for rapid bacterial growth and reactor design for optimal selenium removal have been investigated. The mechanisms of bacterial reduction and the rate of selenium removal for scaleup to larger systems is discussed.

While a NIOSH accepted procedure exists for determination of quartz in the respirable dust samples from coal mines, no specific procedure has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples. In this study, the effect of particle size on the estimation of quartz using the infrared technique was evaluated. Several laboratory tests were performed to determine the dependence of the infrared absorbance peak height on the different sizes of quartz particles. The significant dependence observed between quartz particle size and the measured peak height indicates the potential for erroneous interpretation of the quartz in bulk samples depending on how the samples are prepared. A procedure to reduce the effect of size in the determination of the quartz content is suggested.

"THAT WHICH WE CANNOT SEE" INTRODUCTION Often it has been stated that the greatest of all fears is fear itself - fear created only by that which we cannot see or by that which we fail to understand. The elimination or minimization of fear can best be accomplished by a thorough understanding of the underlying causes of the fear. As related to the mining industry the omnipresent fear is the dread of acquiring cancer through accumulated exposure to "that which we cannot see" - radioactivity. The understanding of the resulting exposure effects can best be obtained through acquisition of authentic data and the subsequent analysis of the same by a group of highly qualified specialists. I may point out that the nuclear industry and its source, uranium mining, greatly surpass any other industries in the degree of public awareness as to its potential environmental effects. Public out-cry has always influenced major decisions relating to how industries conduct their operations and much of their effort has resulted in many changes. The issues of health and safety in the mining industry have created considerable public concern, but intense concern to those of us directly involved within the industry. Increasing concern regarding the effect of human activity on the quality of the outer environment of air, land, and water has developed within the past two decades. There is now a growing concern about the health and safety of persons at work in their inner environment, of their working-places in industry. Hearings and investigations conducted in Canada by three appointed "Royal Commissions" have all confirmed that this concern is well justified when focused on the health and safety of workers in our mines. REGULATORY CONTROL OF URANIUM MINING OPERATIONS In Canada, the ownership of mineral resources and the control of their extraction, except for uranium, is vested under the "British North America Act" in the provinces. In all provinces the statutory basis for health and safety provisions in the mining industry can be found in the provincial "Mining Acts" with each province assuming the responsibility to produce its own "Mining Act". In particular, all of the Mining Acts in Canada place upon the management of a mine the responsibility to ensure that provincial provisions are met. The concept of entropy is classical in thermodynamics and information theory. Its potential use as a measure of the ordering of a spatial system is discussed. Although entropy has been discussed previously in the framework of spatial statistics and for univariate distributions, a bivariate data-based estimator has not until now been defined. Different statistical distributions maximize entropy, depending on the univariate, bivariate, or n-variate constraints applied. For bivariate distributions, with a known mean and known covariance, it can be shown that the distribution that maximizes the entropy of the system is the bivariate gaussian. A nonparametric bivariate entropy estimator is introduced, derived directly from the experimental cumulative frequency distribution. Assuming that this experimental bivariate distribution is representative of the population distribution, then a measure of departure from gaussianity can be introduced as a relative entropy estimator. Practical applications for the entropy estimator are discussed, and an example developed.

A PC image-based, on-line coarse particle size analysis system is being developed for the control of crushing and grinding circuits. Initial results had indicated that the system is accurate when tested with irregularly shaped particles which are stationary and do not overlap with each other. Now the system has been successfully tested in the dynamic mode with a moving belt conveyor. On-line size analysis for actual plant operations is discussed and includes: (1) the video system with respect to lighting and data acquisition requirements for a rapidly moving belt and, (2) image sampling, specifically the number of observations needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set.

The price of copper has gone into the tank. So has gold. Environmental regulations are more restrictive. Global warming has world leaders and environmental groups seeking international regulations to keep the planet from heating up - mostly by restricting the use of fossil fuels. And the US Secretary of the Interior wants to make it more costly -prohibitively so for smaller companies - to mine hard rock metals in the United States. By rights, miners should be carrying around a pessimistic attitude about their industry. But miners are an optimistic lot, always believing that things will improve. That optimism was in evidence in Tucson, AZ in early December, when about 620 miners met at the Double- tree Hotel for the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Conference, put on by SME. Attendees listened as a United States congressman commented on the recent tax cut bill, mining regulations and the continuing need for the mining industry to improve its image in the eyes of the general public. Session speakers discussed how improved technology has made their processing operations at Sierrita and Morenci more efficient and cost-effective.
