Three rock fracture parameters define three points along empirical cumulative size (of rock fragments) distribution curves at Inspiration copper mine. These parameters are: rock quality designation (RQD), longest piece of intact rock and % of +1 inch. The RQD and the longest piece are actually measured on drill hole cores whereas % of +1 inch is visually estimated on the same cores. These size distribution curves are then utilized in a variety of engineering applications such as; slope instability analysis, blast design, copper recovery prediction from heap leaching, etc. The three rock fracture parameters for two dominant rock types (porphyry and schist) in the pit had to be estimated separately due to different rock fracture characteristics.' Both ordinary kriging (OK) with measured hard data only and soft kriging (SFTK) with hard and soft data were used to estimate each parameter. The cross validation of 100 measured sample values served as the-basis for evaluating the potential benefits of SFTK over OK. Use of subjective information during SFTK required obtaining (prior) probability distributions for all three rock fracture parameters. These distributions were obtained from the typical rock fracture parameters observed in drill hole cores falling inside the geologically interpreted structural domains with varying degrees. of fracture intensity and also through direct mapping along the exposed bench faces. Two different types of soft information were developed for this study; namely, Type "A" and Type "K". The former is based on sample distribution of fracture parameters whereas the latter is based on two step estimation designed to narrow the range of variation observed in data Type "A". The results of the cross validation were analyzed using a linear regression of actual values versus estimated values. The results confirm an improvement on the estimates made by SFTK with hard and. both types of soft data over those produced by OK with hard data only.

The oil shales in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado occur in the Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation. The oil shales were deposited in a unique environment of deposition which caused the mineral nahcolite (NaHC03) to be precipitated within the oil shales. Post-depositional tectonics resulted in extensive fracturing of the Middle Zone of the Parachute Creek member, and to a lesser degree portions of the Lower Zone, which allowed percolating ground waters to dissolve the nahcolite in the fractured portion of the oil shale beds which is characterized by broken porous oil shale, certain beds of which have collapsed into rubble and debris. The extent and porosity of the Leach Zone aquifer is dependent upon the percentage of kerogen and nahcolite originally deposited in the oil shale. Any oil shale development program in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwest Colorado will need to be preceeded by an extensive study of the Leach Zone in order to determine the effects on a mining program.

In Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking, dust emissions are collected in a baghouse to prevent their escape to the Environment. This fine dust, predominantly iron oxide, also contains oxides of various other metals introduced into the EAF from the scrap charge. For example, mixed or galvanized scrap brings with it zinc, lead, and small quantities of cadmium which preferentially accumulate in the collected off-gas dust. Stainless steel scrap brings chromium into the charge, some of which also makes its way into the baghouse dust as hexavalent chromium-containing oxides. Because many of the contained heavy metal oxides are water-leachable, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has listed EAF dust as a hazardous waste which, as of August 8, 1988, cannot be 1andfi11ed without first being treated. Moreover, beginning August 8, 1991, all dusts with zinc concentrations of 15% or greater will be required to undergo high temperature thermal treatment to remove the heavy metals prior to any further disposal. This deadline represents several EPA-granted time extensions to the original requirements; extensions which were granted to allow for further development of process technologies.

The safe and economical storage of tailings generated by modern day mining operations is possibly the single largest challenge faced by miners today. By nature, tailings are a waste product that have little to no economic value. Yet, their physical and chemical contents can pose incredible environmental hazards if not stored correctly. The variety of factors that are met when designing Tailing Storage Facilities (TSFs), means that in most cases, a low-cost solution is sought to accomplish storage, meet environmental regulations, and adhere to industry best practices. TSFs can be large dam face structures or smaller structures like retention/evaporation lined ponds. Water management is potentially the single largest factor that miners and designers must contend with when constructing a TSF. Water is a necessary component in the process of extracting ore but can be difficult and expensive to remove once it is mixed with solid tailings particles. As a result, the most common disposal of these water containing tailings, called a slurry, is to simply discharge into an embanked TSF (Vick, 1990). These structures, just like any other water retaining dam, can breach releasing contents downstream. Despite modern advancements in TSF design, there have been numerous dam failures that have resulted in tragic loss of life and ecological devastation. Most notably in the last decade, the Brumadinho and Mariana Dam disasters in Brazil killed 278 people in downstream communities when TSF dams failed in 2019 and 2015, respectively (Rotta at el., 2020). Similarly, in 2014, the Mount Polley tailings spill in British Columbia was the second largest tailings spill on record and caused extensive damage to adjacent watershed ecosystems when the TSF embankment was breached (Byrne at el., 2018). While there were indeed numerous unique and underlying factors present in each of these structural failures, a shared element in the devastation was the large-scale release of unstable liquefied tailings

Since 1993, Newmont Mining has been growing through the development 'q of three major foreign mining operations with a fourth under construction. The first project, Yanacocha in Peru, began operating in October 1993. This occurred at a time when political and business risk in that country was considered high. In 1995, Newmont began operating the Muruntau joint venture in Uzbekistan. It is the first mining project of its kind in the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). In early 1996, Newmont started operating the Minahasa Mine in Indonesia. In early 1997, Newmont began construction of a $1.9-billion project in Indonesia. The company is also completing a feasibility study with its partner for the development of a gold operation in Mexico. All of these projects have been considered "risky" by most standards. Newmont has been successful in all of them through risk mitigation programs. These programs include using strong and successful in-country partners, concentrating on developing a strong national workforce with minimal expatriate employees, using World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and International Finance Corp. (IFC) financing and building and maintaining strong ties with host governments.

The purpose of roasting gold ores is to release for extraction, typically by cyanidation, the small particles of gold which are surrounded by refractory stone. The roasting simply opens up passages for the penetration of solution into the interior of the ore particles. This is accomplished by the removal by volatilization or formation of volatile oxides of certain constituents such as sulfur, arsenic or antimony. Temperature is an important parameter. High temperatures tend to form a dense iron particle rather than a "spongy" calcine. The dense iron particles result in lower gold recoveries. High temperature can cause melting of some components which also results in gold encapsulation. Roasting of refractory gold ore concentrates has been practiced for decades. Multiple hearth, rotary kiln and muffle reactors were first used for roasting. Fluid bed roasting provided a low capital cost, low maintenance technology with better process control and soon became the favored technology. The first fluid bed concentrate roasters were commissioned in the late 1940's. Early fluid beds were "bubbling" type. Environmental considerations did not significantly impact on the design. Feedstocks were highly exothermic and reaction rates were relatively rapid. Roasting today must compete with other technologies for treatment of refractory ores. Ore bodies which are not

The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

The Post deposit is located in Eureka County, Nevada, about 37 km (23 miles) northwest of the town of Carlin. Post occurs on the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of 14 major gold deposits, each containing more than three tonnes (t) (100 000 ounces) of gold. Deposits of the Carlin Trend are epithermal, sediment-hosted, disseminated gold occurrences, collectively containing more than 622 t (20 million ounces) of gold. Three major gold producers active on the Carlin Trend are Newmont Gold Company (NGC) (12.4 t/400 000 ounces of gold per year), Western States Minerals Corporation (WSMC) and Pancana Minerals joint venture (1.56 t/50 000 ounces of gold per year), and Dee Gold Mining Company (1.4 t/45 000 ounces of gold per year). The Carlin Trend has also been referred to as the Lynn-Railroad Mineral Belt. This district is characterized by open-pit mineable, micron-sized gold, hosted in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Six geological subdistricts comprise the Carlin Trend, each characterized by differences in host lithology, structural controls, alteration assemblage, or style of mineralization. The six geologic subdistricts include, from south to north, Bullion (Railroad), Rain, Maggie Creek, Lynn, Bluestar-Goldstrike, and Bootstrap. With the exception of the Bullion subdistrict, which was primarily a producer of base metals, each sub-district contained mineable reserves in excess of 31 t (one million ounces) of gold.

Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

The goal of slope mechanics is to achieve efficient and safe pit slopes. In the case of ultimate mine slopes the objective is to minimize the stripping ratio by steepening the slopes to their maximum stable limit. On the other hand, the inclination of working slopes is normally established by operating space requirements and the function of slope mechanics should be the continuous surveillance of slope conditions to assure long-term stability and to provide timely warning of impending slides so that corrective measures may be incorporated in production planning. In 1956 Kennecott instituted a program to provide the resources necessary to develop and maintain a slope mechanics capability, including technical knowledge, engineers, and instruments. Although the goal has not been fully achieved, very significant progress has been made. Other papers (3, 4, 7, 8, & 12) have described the purposes and detailed results of the most recent study carried out at the Kimbley Pit. The study has provided valuable experience and has given the industry a three dimensional picture of the stability variables that influence a mine slope. The study has better defined those areas which require further investigation and has indicated those design and analytical techniques which can be used with confidence. In effect, the study has paved the way for the next step; that of refining the design process and applying it for profit.

Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. The earliest industrial application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) at comminution was in 1984 in the cement industry. Since then, the equipment has been widely applied in mining activities. Despite the rapid spread across the industry, several challenges are still present in the equipment’s application, especially considering the complex ore breakage behaviour reported for this process. The pellet feed’s HPGR comminution was recognized as fundamental to efficiently increase the particle surface area (e.g., blaine specific area, BSA) at a lower energy and water consumption level (Chapman et al. in J Southern Afr Instit Mining Metall 113:407–413, 2013). The present study considers a novel milling process applying only HPGR as a re-regrind stage after concentration. The amount of successive ground product recirculation into the machine to achieve the required particle size for the pelletizing process was investigated. The study compared the ball wet milling process with the innovative processing technology for hematite–goethite ores. Green pellet balling and induration processes were simulated in bench and pilot scale. The milling results showed a considerably steep increase in BSA after each recirculation step into the HPGR, although compared with the ball-milled product the size fraction <45 μm% increased a modest five percentage points after three recirculation cycles, remaining steady until the last recirculation step. As a result, the green pellet generated presented higher concentration of pellets between 10 and 16 mm (%10-16 mm), with a higher drop number than typically observed when produced with ball-milled feedstock. Consequently, on the induration process, a higher pellet deformation was observed during the pot grate loading. Despite that, the fired pellets still presented an outstanding performance in cold crush strength (CSS) considered suitable to an industrial application.

The paper presents results of the mineralogical examination on samples from a bacterial leaching test which simulated in situ leaching for 482 days. Rock fragments (15 to 20 cm) were obtained from the top, the middle and the bottom of a bioleach column. Examination of the samples was carried by electron microscopy and image analysis. The surfaces of the rock fragments were studied to characterize the precipitation products, and cross-section cuts were studied to assess the advance of the bacteria leaching front and the dissolution of the different sulphide minerals.

Consolidation Coal Co. tested the agglomeration of fine coal using a laboratory pellet mill. The principal operating variables examined were feed coal moisture, coal size distribution, and additives to the feed coal. The moisture of the feed coal was found to be critical to both the pellet mill operability and the product strength. Coals, with feed moistures too high to pelletize, could be pelletized if mixed with lime or a water absorbent material. The addition of dry starch binder improved the product strength.

The stability of pillars in old mined-out districts is greatly dependent on the weathering action caused by moisture penetration into the pillar structure. Field observations in old mining districts indicated that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of the stability of the pillar if the coal seam contains parting or binder (layers of claystone or mudstone). The weathering action caused by moisture penetration over a long period of time degrades both parting and coal. However, it has been observed that the structural deterioration is more severe in parting. Moisture-penetration rates in parting and coal are different. The extent of the weathered zone in various layers of the pillar is primarily time dependent. This paper investigates, both in the laboratory and in the field, the effects of weathering action on coal and parting. In the laboratory, slake durability indices and uniaxial compressive strength tests for dry and saturated specimens are compared for coal. In the field, the in situ strength profiles for coal and parting layers are obtained, and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on the strength profiles is studied An attempt was also made to establish formulae for time-dependent strengths of coal and parting.

Titan Group’s environmental policy and Sharrcem’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are the driving forces behind the development and implementation of a comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan at Dimce Quarry, which is the main raw material source for Sharrcem Cement Plant since the 1970’s, located in the municipality of Hani i Elezit in Kosovo. Based on an Environmental Impact Assessment Study and the approved Mining Plan and also on the principles prescribed in the Guidelines on Quarry Rehabilitation, released by the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD-CSI), Sharrcem has adopted a quarry operation and rehabilitation process in line with the best practices in the mining and cement sector. This paper discusses the background for the development of the rehabilitation plan and the results of rehabilitation activities, as have been implemented over the last few years. The main objective of the progressive rehabilitation plan at Dimce Quarry is to restore the depleted pit and return it back to the original land owners for resettlement. To date approx. 3,4Ha of former mining area has been restored by backfilling and levelling of the depleted closed pit and returned back to owners, who have built their houses and turned it into a living area again. This Quarry has turned out to be a real composition and practical example of preserving and returning back the natural resources in a state compatible with the surrounding environment and with respect to the needs of the local stakeholders. The motivation for business to engage in rehabilitation activities in the first place lies in the belief that the development and implementation of a progressive and practical Quarry rehabilitation plan and restitution of the land will deliver significant environmental and social benefits that outweigh the long-term rehabilitation costs, while maintaining the company’s reputation.

Volumetric mass transfer coefficients and gas holdups were measured in a concentric tube airlift reactor designed for the microbial desulfurization of coal. The slurries were comprised of an acidified basal salts solution containing thirteen different weight percents of coal (74 µm Ohio #1) at three temperatures. An enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient, KLa, with respect to that measured in pure solution was found at weight percents of 5 (volume fraction solids, ES = 0.035) or less, the greatest enhancement being as great as 37% at approximately 2 weight percent (ES = J 0.014). At higher solids fractions, the mass transfer coefficient decreased with further solids additions, decreasing by as much as 91% at 40 weight percent coal (ES = 0.315). KLa increased with temperature at all solids concentrations, the greatest increase being 392% at 72°C vs that measured at 30°C. Gas holdup, EG decreased with all increases in solids loading by as much as 65% and increased by as much as 67% with temperature. KLa and EG were correlated with operating conditions separately, and the separate correlations combined to yield overall correlations for the mass transfer coefficient and for the gas holdup. The correlations are suitable for inclusion in system models devised earlier for microbial coal desulfurization processes, and may be used for design, operation and cost estimation for such systems.

Since our time is very limited, I would like to relate to you as best as I can a few important areas that I think may be helpful. 1.) The Real Difference between Dense Phase and Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying: Within the many variations of so called Dense Phase conveying, it is often difficult to determine to what degree a system is Dense Phase or if, in fact, it is a Dense Phase system at all. A system that appears and is generally known to be Dense Phase can under certain operating conditions perform as a Dilute Phase system. If, for instance, a high pressure system, which is generally a Dense Phase system, operates at 60 PSIG, say 4 atmospheres, utilizes enough air volume, the conveying velocity will easily exceed the normal design velocity of a typical Dilute Phase system. Now, on the other hand, a low pressure system which we will term a Dilute Phase system, operating at 15 PSIG; say 1 atmosphere, can convey a given product at well below the saltation velocity, like a Dense Phase system.
