With the advent of acid rain legislation included within the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, a great deal of uncertainty with regard to price, source and production quantities has been cast into the coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward, South American coals move into the northern markets, states propose legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries, while some utilities question the long term availability of eastern compliance coal. Any major coal producer must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place; several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves while others have invested in technology to compete as a low cost producer. This paper discusses some of these options in light of the uncertainties of the market place, from an eastern coal producer?s viewpoint.

This paper discusses a practical method for enhancing the performance of mining work crews. The method, described as the Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM), seeks to define performance variability within similar tasks of an underground work crew. Key components of the WCPM include: •job definition through task analyses, •the ranking of job elements by perceived cost consequence, •observational techniques to establish performance baselines, and •cost linkages between adherence to task procedures and measures of consequence for noncompliance. The components of this model emphasize a reliance on learning from a veteran work force and using that information to reinvest in strategies to enhance safety and efficiency. These strategies are not limited to technological efforts but include consideration of the so-called "soft-skill technologies, " aimed at reducing variability in individual performance and at effecting a continuous improvement in overall system effectiveness.

The Carajás Hills are in Brazil's Eastern Amazon, between the Araguaia and Xingu rivers, and parallels 5° and 7° Latitude South. A location map is given in Fig. 1. It is an area of low mountains (maximum altitude 900 meters), covered by the Amazon rain forest. Annual average temperature is 25°C, ranging from 31°C (maximum) to 19°C (minimum). Annual rainfall averages 2,000mm. Although it rains throughout the whole year, heavy rains occur from December through March. At the beginning of the 20's, Brazilian explorationists made brief geological descriptions of the area. Due to the thick soil, scarce fresh rock outcrops and the tropical forest covering a completely unpopulated area, detailed geological studies were difficult and reconnaissance expeditions were limited to the river margins.

The modern drilling fluids industry is a dynamic, evolutionary environment. It is continuously striving to satisfy and anticipate the ever-changing needs of the oil and gas industry. The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

"This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative tunnelling method named the Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which is conducted by the Ring Pipe Jacking Machine (RPJM). The RPJM consists of a double ring shell which forms a ring section where small interlaced cutter heads or several micro tunnelling machines are assembled to cut soil. Similar to the conventional pipe jacking method, the RPJM also needs a thrust system, a slurry transport system, and a control system. To satisfy the need for large/super large or special section tunnels in future, the RPJM is designed to reduce sharply the excavation face to the annular section, thus enhancing the face stability. Part of the innovation is that the RPJM uses modular cutter heads or micro-TBMs which can be reused. The typical double shield shape can be easily changed by reinstalling the modular cutter heads. Modularity allows the tunnel to be cut in any cross-section shapes, ranging from a circular tunnel to a rectangular one. INTRODUCTION The demand and requirement to utilize urban underground space is rising with the rapid social development in recent years. It is necessary to reduce excavations of the urban ground surface to ensure smooth traffic in cities. Therefore the conventional open cut construction method for underground tunnels can no longer satisfy the need of practical engineering, and it is taken over by trenchless technologies .The Pipe jacking method is an important trenchless technology and is used more and more frequently to install underground pipelines, but the present pipe jacking method still has many problems. For example, it is not suitable for installing large-diameter tunnels and it also has difficulty in construction of short radius curved tunnels. This paper presents a conceptual design of an innovative pipe jacking machine named the Ring Pipe Jacking machine (RPJM) and introduces the correspondent Ring Pipe Jacking Method (RPJ) which can be applied to construct large-diameter tunnels. Furthermore, technical characteristics and superiority of the ring pipe jacking method are analyzed in this paper."

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau's research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. "Three-dimensional geological modelling of coal mines is critical to the sustainable development of the mining industry. On the basis of comprehensively analyzing 3D geological modelling methods, according to the available data of mine such as geological terrain maps, cross-sections and boreholes, we present a 3D modelling method by integrating ArcGIS and 3D GeoModeller. Our motivation is to integrate the advantages of both software modules in processing, converting, integrating and transferring geological information. Special attention has been given to the data structure and processing flow. We build a 3D geological model of the Xieqiao coal mine and successfully extract the geological framework of the strata in the 11118 workface, which is consistent with that of the actual explored geology.Introduction/Background Pertinent impediments such as a lower information degree, the out-of-date information infrastructure and the low level of information management and decision-making make it critical for there to be improvements in mines. Modern exploration technologies favour the construction of digital mine. Digital mine promotes the transformation of the mining industry by integrating information, automation and intelligence to build safe, efficient, high-yield, green and sustainable mines. Three-dimensional geological modelling and visualization of mines are at the core of digital mine. Compared with traditional 2D geological data, 3D models express the various geological phenomena completely, as well as reproduce the spatial distribution of geological units quickly, allowing for the prediction of mining subsidence, better decision-making and improved geological analysis. Modelling methods such as multi-DEM, tetrahedral grid and the generalized tri-prism that are based on borehole estimation and interpolation data are used to construct 3D models of mine geology (Chen 1995,Wang et al 2003, Wu 2004a); nevertheless, these methods cannot fully use multi-source mining data, whereas multi-source integration methods can be used to build 3D models (Kaufmann and Martin 2008, Zhao et al 2009) but require user interaction in model construction and low automation in model updates. During coal production, a plethora of geological data is accumulated. The organisation of discreteinformation under dynamic conditions and the extraction of meaningful information to better service for three-dimensional modelling is a meaningful work (Wu et al 2004b)."

Previous testing was performed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to improve longwall dust control using underside shield sprays with a longwall directional spray system. This testing provided encouraging results toward respirable dust exposure reductions for longwall personnel, achieving as high as 99% dust reduction at some sampling locations along the longwall personnel walkway. Additional laboratory testing was conducted to test these underside shield sprays in conjunction with a shearer-clearer spray system located on the longwall shearer body. The purpose of this testing was to determine if the underside shield sprays interacted positively or negatively with the shearerclearer sprays. Results from this testing indicate that while the shearerclearer system influences where the respirable dust particles are directed, underside shield sprays can still lower respirable dust exposure for longwall personnel.

Work with the users and specifiers of concrete had to be done at its end point of application--in a building, bridge, dam, highway or home. I should like to talk to you today on the less technical side of concrete--what it has been--what it is today--and what it can offer in future construction. Concrete, in many forms, has a long background extending from such notable historic times as the Roman Empire. Here, concrete made from pozzolanic cement from the slopes of Mt. Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. Mining activity in Mexico began in the 16th century when the Spanish realized the mining potential of the new territory. Since that time, mining has evolved into a strong and vital industry for the country. Good professionals in the mining-related fields are fundamental to the growth and improvement of this industry. Since the end of the 18th century, formal education in mining has been available at the University of Guanajuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico. This school created one of the first schools of mines on the North American continent in 1828. In recent times, some other programs have been created at other universities. Universities offering mining related programs Listed here are the seven universities in Mexico that offer mining related degrees. They are the University of Guanajuato, UNAM, the University of Zacatecas, the University of Chihuahua, the University of Sonora, the University of Coahuila and the University of San Luis Potosi. The University of Guanajuato is the only Mexican university that offers graduate studies at the master's level. No PhD programs in mining engineering are offered at any Mexican university. Programs at each university are of different duration. They are: • University of Guanajuato-Five-and-a-half years, divided into five years of classroom instruction and six months in the working place. • University of Zacatecas - Five years of classroom instruction.

It has already been said and written many times that the construction of tunnels in urban areas has proved more and more indispensable, if not vital. The subsequent development of tunnelling for 15 or 20 years has brought large and sometimes spectacular improvements in the fiel of execution methods. But, particularly in urban areas, the difficulties to be overcome have been and still remain very important. As a matter of fact, most of big cities, have been settled near rivers or lakes; therefore the geological nature of the subsoil is soft ground and the level of ground water is high. As a consequence, tunnelling is often faced with many well-known difficulties and dangers issued from decompression or loosening of the ground, sometimes accompanied by a lowering of the water table. This may compromise the safety of the excavation itself and of the workers, and also cause settlements which many severely damage nearby buildings or structures. This is the reason why it is always necessary to work out specially adapted methods and even to develop new ones. Cuprex Limited is currently developing a small gold mining operation in Central Australia in the Tennant Creek field. In February 1984, the company undertook a feasibility study on the project and operations commenced in August 1984. Ore reserves are located between 230 and 280 metres (755 ft and 919 ft) below surface and ore extraction required the establishment of a shaft network for access, ore hoisting and ventilation. Zeni Drilling Company from West Virginia, U.S.A. was contracted to blind drill two shafts for the project. Blind drilling was selected for various reasons, including timing which related to cost efficiency. The blind drill shaft technique has proved successful in this application and with enthusiastic and innovative support from the mining industry, will prove an efficient and cost effective means of accessing and operating underground mining projects of all sizes in the future.

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of a fluorite single-crystal internal reflection element has been investigated using Fourier transform infra-red/internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). The application of this innovative experimental technique has added a new dimension to the investigation and understanding of collector adsorption phenomena. It is now possible, for the first time, to measure in-situ and in real time the adsorption density and bonding nature of collector species adsorbed at mineral surfaces. In this regard, oleate adsorption densities were calculated from spectral data, and the equilibrium adsorption isotherms were found to agree quite well with other adsorption isotherms reported in the literature. At low equilibrium oleate concentrations(<10-5 M), monolayer-type cover-age was observed in the chemisorbed region. It was found that in this region the adsorption density increases with an increase in temperature, which sup-ports experimental results from previous ex-situ FTIR studies and thermochemical studies in which it was shown that the chemisorption reaction was endothermic. At higher equilibrium oleate concentrations (>10-5 M), the adsorption density increases dramatically at the point of surface precipitation. The oleate adsorbed in the chemisorbed region has a distinctly different spectrum than the oleate adsorbed in the surface precipitation region of the adsorption isotherm. In the chemisorbed region, the oleate appears to be mono-coordinated at the fluorite surface.

The title of this paper is "Designing Very Large Bio-oxidation Plants". To our knowledge, only one such plant has been designed and built to date, and that is U.S. Gold's Tonkin Springs plant in Nevada. This plant was commissioned in Spring of 1990 and operated for a short time successfully as a bio-leach plant but U.S. Gold did not have the financial strength to overcome the consequences of construction delays and increased capital cost. The plant has temporarily been 1 put on a standby basis. Recently, < > a potential joint venture between Tonkin Springs Gold Mining Company and Homestake Mining was announced. Homestake will operate the mine with the technology and subsequent improvements would be co-owned by both companies. This paper is not a "how to" type publication because we feel that such an approach could be dangerous if used improperly. Rather, we discuss some of the important aspects of process selection, testing and design that need attention, and some of the lessons learned to date. As with all developments, improvements and new knowledge will accrue as more companies use bio-oxidation technology. The Tonkin Springs plant is fair evidence that bio-oxidation has "arrived" as a technology, and that successful design and operation of plants treating greater than 1000 t/d of feed is possible.

It is applicable when, by its practice, plant cost can be reduced or the value of its products increased by the removal of a barren or lean reject or a high grade final product. This paper attempts to describe cobbing as it is now being practiced, and also the problems that are of concern to the operator and design engineer. In preparation, 16 plants were contacted, all of which were very cooperative with their time and data.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shrinkage or shrinkage stoping refers to any mining method in which broken ore is temporarily retained in the stope to provide a working platform and/or to offer temporary support to the stope walls during active mining. Since ore "swells" when broken, it is necessary to shrink the muck pile a corresponding amount by draw¬ing some of the broken ore out as the stope is advanced-hence the name. Broken ore retained during stoping is drawn out after the stope has reached its limits. The stope may be left empty or may be filled with waste contemporaneous with, or subsequent to, the final draw. Traditionally the method implies conventional overhand stoping methods with miners working between the muck pile and the stope back, in a space which advances updip with mining and is maintained by balanc¬ing "swell" with "shrink." The shrinkage classification is also applicable to so-called "semishrinkage" methods in open pillar-supported stopes where broken ore is temporarily retained as a working platform but offers no wall support; and to various blasthole shrinkage methods which utilize broken ore temporarily retained in the stope for wall support, but which do not require miners to work from muck pile in the stope. The method is generally applied to steeply dipping veins of strong ore between strong walls. APPLICATION Geometry The geometry of a shrinkable vein is described in terms of dip, width, and regularity along dip. Overall strike and dip dimensions and irregularities along the strike generally impose no restrictions on the method. Dip is ideally 1.2 to 1.5 rad (70 to 90°). As dip falls below 1.2 rad (70°), the shrinkage draw begins to strongly favor the hanging wall side, thus leaving a poor working platform for conventional overhand work. This is particularly true in relatively wide stopes. The sup¬port afforded to the hanging wall also diminishes with decreasing dip, reaching nil as the dip approaches the repose angle of broken ore. Dips below 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°) are not generally shrinkable except by open stope "seinishrinkage" methods. Minimum mining width is fixed by working space requirements in the stope-generally about 1 m. Shrink¬age in narrower veins requires that waste rock from one or both walls be broken with the ore and the attendant dilution accepted to achieve the minimum width. Nar¬row stopes are less suitable, encouraging hang-ups and bridging of broken ore, with the attendant problems of erratic draw and incomplete recovery of broken ore. Maximum practical width may be 3 m or less to over 30 m, depending upon the competency of the ore and its ability to stand unsupported across the stope back. This is a vital safety consideration in conventional over¬hand stopes, but is much less of a factor in blasthole shrinkage methods. Very wide veins and massive ore bodies have been mined by transverse vertical shrinkage panels separated by transverse vertical pillars which are either abandoned or recovered later by other methods. Regularity along the dip is a prerequisite of shrink¬age as there must be no serious obstruction to the flow of broken ore downward through the stope to the sill level. Gentle rolls along the dip are acceptable if the local footwall dip everywhere exceeds 0.78 to 0.87 rad (45 to 50°). Off-dip hanging wall and/or footwall splits can generally be mined selectively from a conventional shrink stope as they are encountered without ad¬versely affecting subsequent continuation of shrinkage mining updip on the main vein. Vertical offsets or major rolls along the dip which cannot be "smoothed over" generally require that a sublevel be established with new draw control development. Blasthole shrinkage methods are much less flexible (and thus less selective) in their ability to accommodate any of these irregularities. Ground Conditions The wall rock must be strong enough to stand with the minimal support afforded by the dynamic mass of broken ore in the stope. During active mining, local sloughing from the walls is restrained, but the broken ore affords little, if any, useful resistance to closure of the stope walls. Such squeezing, if present, may bind up the stope and cause the loss of much ore. Pillars left between and/or within stopes are effective in preventing closure but reduce overall recovery. Walls may be re¬inforced by bolting after each stope cut in conventional shrinkage but not in blasthole shrinkage. Ore in place must be strong enough to stand with no natural support across the stope width, although tem¬porary artificial support or reinforcement may be used locally in conventional stopes. Some spalling or sloughing is permissible in blasthole shrinkage as men are never present in the stope. Physical and/or mineralogical characteristics of the broken ore may impose restrictions on stope design and/or operational plan¬ning, and may even preclude the use of shrinkage al¬together. Examples include: ores which, when broken, are cohesive or which tend to pack or cement together under the influence of ground water, wall pressure, and/ or chemical reaction. Such conditions precipitate er¬ratic draw during mining and often result in difficult and/or incomplete final draw; pyritic ores which oxidize very rapidly in the stopes and may generate heat, imposing a fire hazard by spontaneous combustion; sulfide ores which oxidize sufficiently in the stopes to adversely affect mill recovery by flotation; and ores (es¬pecially those containing uranium minerals) which ex¬ude radon gas and thereby impose ventilation constraints on stope design. In most cases these problems can be minimized by limiting the size of stopes, by minimizing the duration of mining activity in each stope, and by promptly drawing each stope empty following comple¬tion of mining.

It is imperative that the hydrogeologic frame- work and the ground water flow systems of a Potential mine area be investigated prior to initiation of mining. Such investigations are necessary so that potential mine water inflow problems can be anticipated and controlled. Obvious difficulties can arise if large inflows of ground water occur in underground workings. Costs of water removal and disposal, if not foreseen and included in economic planning, can severely limit or eliminate profit from a mining operation. Safety problems associated with large inflows are an additional potential problem. The inflow of water into a mine necessarily alters the associated ground water system. The inflow also may impact nearby surface water regimes, depending upon the interaction of the surface water and ground water systems. The inflow of water into a mine inevitably causes a decline in the ground water levels in the vicinity of the mine. This decline may be restricted to a small area or it may extend a considerable distance, depending upon the hydrogeologic properties of the associated hydrostratigraphic units. A decrease in surface flow will result if the area of ground water level decline intersects a stream or spring that is hydraulically connected to the ground water system. Mine inflow problems historically have been evaluated after-the-fact. Premining hydrologic investigations only recently have been initiated. Brown&apos;s (1977)* report on anticipated hydrologic impacts of oil shale mining in the Piceance Basin of Colorado is an example of premining hydrologic planning. Observed difficulties inherent in designing a data collection network and then utilizing the data to predict mine inflow have led us to the preparation of this manuscript. This manuscript reflects a two-phase effort. The first phase describes and develops analytical and numerical techniques for mine inflow prediction. Emphasis in this section is placed on the selection and application of data collection techniques and data analysis procedures. The second phase applies the prediction technique(s) developed during phase 1 to two existing mines. The objective of phase 1 efforts is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water systems and ground water systems that can affect the inflow of water into an underground mine. Subsequently these variables are incorporated into predictive techniques for estimating underground mine water inflow and its effect on associated ground water and surface water systems. The specific objectives of phases 1 and 2 are to: 1) Determine the hydrologic parameters required for predicting underground mine water in- flow and the potential effects of the inflow on surface and ground water systems. The hydrologic parameters represent both premining and past initiation conditions. 2) Outline methods for obtaining the necessary input data for the predictive techniques in pre- mining and post initiation periods. 3) Present existing numerical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow including assumptions Ad required input. 4) Evaluate existing numerical techniques previously tabulated based on their applicability to mine water inflow prediction. 5) Attempt to develop analytical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow. 6) Develop, through modification of existing models, a general mathematical model as a numerical technique for predicting underground mine water inflow and the resultant effects on surface and ground water systems. 7) Apply the predictive techniques to two existing mines selected for this purpose. 8) Compare the predicted inflow rates to measured inflow rates at both mines. 9) Compare predicted impact on district hydrology to observed impacts where possible. 10) Evaluate the predictive technique.

This paper assesses the current status of computing education in ABET-accredited mining engineering programs in the United States. The hardware and software being used are reviewed. The extent to which computer applications are incorporated into mining engineering courses is also surveyed. Today&apos;s capabilities and practices are compared with those of the past to establish, trends in computing education. The concerns of mining educators regarding computers are addressed, as are views on the direction in which mining engineering programs appear to be heading in preparing students to meet the computing needs of industry.
