INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. Phase I is scheduled to be completed by the end of 1991 at a total cost of around $250 million (US) plus 250 million

The Research and development review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The competitiveness of the US mining industry in a world market depends on many factors. The introduction of new and innovative methods, though, can have a significant, long-term impact. As industry cuts back its own long- term research and development efforts, the federal government continues to provide the major support for mining and minerals research. The US Bureau of Mines works with the mining industry and the academic community to develop innovative concepts for the mining and processing of non-fuel minerals. The Bureau’s research focuses on exploration and mining technology, minerals and materials science, processing technology, health and safety and environmental technology. Mine design A conical caving system, being designed by the Bureau, would allow the development of low-grade ore bodies, early startup at lower initial capital costs and increased safety and versatility in development and production. This method is a form of mass caving that allows the ore to be drawn from a central loading point at the bottom of the cone- shaped caving zone (Fig. 1). A simulation laboratory model and computer analysis show initial promise for predicted performance. For tabular, flat-lying ore deposits, the Bureau is investigating a version of the Finnish slot-and-fill system. For this total extraction method, a pattern of rectangular panels is laid out. One panel is extracted in a series of parallel slots and is replaced by alternating-row pillars of backfill. After one panel is mined, equipment and operations are transferred to another panel. By transforming this rectangular layout to a curvilinear geometry, one continuous spiral can be mined without re positioning equipment. Instead of parallel slots and pillars aligned in a rectangle, the slots and pillars are arranged in a spiral.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

An analysis of an iron-ore processing plant showed that its performance was affected by seasonal temperature variations, resulting in reduced grinding efficiency during the winter months. Laboratory and pilot plant studies were conducted to determine the cause of the observed loss of efficiency at lower temperatures. Two types of experiments were performed: drop tests and wet grinding tests. Drop testing was performed to determine the effect of brittleness and frozen pore water on the breakage characteristics of the ore. The wet grinding tests were divided into laboratory tumble tests and pilot-plant tests. The combined results of drop testing and wet grinding were used to make predictions on the performance of plant-scale autogenous grinding. From the drop tests, it was determined that dry iron ore, basalt and sandstone did not change in brittleness over the temperature range studied (-25º to 25ºC). However, when the rocks were water-saturated, the highly porous sandstone became considerably more fracture-resistant upon freezing, due to "grouting" of the pores and preexisting cracks by ice. This effect was not seen for either the iron ore or the basalt, because they were considerably less porous than the sandstone. Tumble tests on both laboratory and pilot scales showed that both the addition of fines to the test charge and a reduction in temperature caused a decrease in the amount of new fines produced. This reduced fines production was the result of increased slurry viscosity when either the fines content increased or the temperature decreased.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

The first vertical shaft lime kiln operating according to the parallel-flow regenerative principle was developed and built in the nineteen-fifties by Schmid-Hofer in Austria. Upon proving this concept of calcining or "burning" limestone to be very energy efficient for the production of good quality lime, Maerz Ofenbau AG of Zurich, Switzerland was in 1965 licensed for the design detailing and construction of these kilns. The first regenerative shaft type lime kiln outside of Austria was built in 1966 and through close co-operation with customers and their operating personnel, the advanced technical developments of today's kiln designs were accomplished. At present approximately 190 kilns of this type in capacities ranging from 60 to 700 short tons per day have been built or are under construction throughout the world in highly industrialized as well as less developed countries.

INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1988 the Joint Venture of Freeport-McMoran Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc, and Homestake Mining Co. was awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 9372. This was one of eleven leases awarded to the Joint Venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, a program of delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 67 million long tons. Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 39.4 million barrels and 7.2 billion cubic feet, respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project by the Joint Venturers in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and given fast- track status immediately. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began JOINT VENTURE The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of thirteen joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has subsequently changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. and Texasgulf assigned their interests in the three leases they participated in to their parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This Joint Venture was the first of its kind; created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Minerals Management Service announced a lease sale date of February 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the thirteen leases the Joint Ventures bid on, eleven were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Limited Partnership, and Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases. The Main Pass joint venture percentage ownership is: 58.33 Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners 25.00 IMC Fertilizer, Inc. 16.67 Homestake Sulphur Co. 100.00 The Main Pass Joint Venture paid $3,401,757 for the Main Pass lease and will pay a royalty of 12.5 percent of production value to the MMS . LOCATION The Main Pass mine complex is located in the Gulf of Mexico, in U. S. federal waters, about 27 kilometers (17 miles) east of Venice, Louisiana or 140 kilometers south east of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is situated in about 63 meters (210 feet) of water. HISTORY The Minerals Management Service (MMS) of the United States Department of the Interior administers the mineral properties of the United States located in federal waters. Periodically the MMS holds lease sales of blocks under its jurisdiction. Prior to the offshore discoveries of sulphur associated with salt domes leased for hydrocarbons, the MMS leased blocks with all minerals including hydrocarbons awarded to the successful bidder for the block. Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

Environmental experts face large and rapidly-increasing volumes of raw data obtained from environmental monitoring stations. These professionals must compile and analyze the data in a systematic manner to cost-effectively understand and minimize the impacts of mining. The shift toward desktop computing, combined with the downsizing of company staffs, has now more than ever created a demand for a modern, PC-based application for the storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation of environmental data. This paper discusses the general requirements of such a system, and points out specific ways in which such industry-specific software can provide convenient and useful access to the data. The software used to illustrate these features is the HydroDat program, developed by Western Water Consultants, Inc.

"Although conventional coal mine designs are conservative regarding pillar strength, local failures such as roof-falls and pillar bursts still affect mine safety and operations. Previous studies have identified that discontinuous, layered roof materials have some self-supporting capacity. This research is a preliminary step towards understanding these mechanics in coal-measure rocks. Although others have considered broad conceptual models and simplified analogs for mine roof behavior, this study presents a unique numerical model that more completely represents in-situ roof conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to conduct a parametric analysis considering a range of in-situ stress ratios, material properties, and joint networks to determine the parameters controlling the stability of single-entries modeled in two-dimensions. Model results are compared to empirical observations of roof-support effectiveness (ARBS) in the context of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) system. Results such as immediate roof displacement, overall stability, and statistical relationships between model parameters and outcomes are presented herein. Potential practical applications of this line of research include: (1) roof-support optimization for a range of coal-measure rocks, (2) establishment of a relationship between roof stability and pillar stress, and (3) determination of which parameters are most critical to roof stability and therefore require concentrated evaluation.INTRODUCTIONRecent studies on pillar design have suggested that the assumptions utilized in traditional methods such as tributary area theory (TAT) (i.e. overburden has no self-supporting capacity, infinite pillar array, and CHILE material properties) are invalid in many geo-mining conditions (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010; Frith and Reed, 2017). Although TAT is conservative with respect to pillar loading, and mine fatalities have steadily decreased since 1990, roof-falls and pillar bursts still occur and injure hundreds of miners per year (Mark, Pappas, and Barczak, 2011). Even though large-scale global mine failure has not occurred in a US coal mine since 2007, the mechanics of global and local stability as governed by the relationship between geologic parameters, mine geometry, and engineering design are still not well-constrained.Numerical methods are a highly effective tool that can be used to gain further insight into these relationships. When using such an approach, calibration to existing empirical relationships is imperative to ensure that numerical model results are realistic. In this study, we utilize the discrete element method (DEM) approach in Itasca’s Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC v. 6.0) (Itasca, 2010).DEM accounts for explicit separation and contact of individual deformable blocks (Jing, 2003) and captures how discontinuities can affect system behavior. Discontinuous and anisotropic rockmass properties are typical features in coal-measure rock which contain various horizontal (bedding) and sub-vertical (joints) fractures depending on their depositional environment, diagenesis, and historic and current stress states."

1. Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. JAMES BOYD 29.1-STAFF-AND-LINE ORGANIZATION Industrial organizations are established primarily to coordinate the activities of many individuals working toward a specific goal. In mining, the goals can vary widely, and the skills necessary to reach them likewise will vary from operation to operation. It is essential to keep in mind the principal point that an organization embodies the necessary skills which supplement each other and achieve a given objective. Those who direct such an organization are grouped together as "management" and accept the responsibilities for the regulation, administration, supervision and guidance of the enterprise. Those who comprise the "administration" and have supervisory authority are referred to as the "executives." In the early days of mining it was common for one executive to exercise virtually complete control over the entire organization, and direct its operation from a central office. However, the science of management has advanced significantly since then. Mining organization administration now allocates increased authority and flexibility to those in direct-line responsibility, and organizes competent people in specialized fields to provide supervisors with guidance where it is needed in day-to-day operations. Few mining companies today are confined to one operation. Therefore, highly developed skills can be provided in the staff which assists management. This is known as staff-and-line organization, illustrated, in general, in Fig. 29-1. Each operation requires diverse skills for the carrying out of specific functions. The acquisition and training of those with such skills is an important operation in assembling organizations. An organization normally is modified to accommodate individuals rather than being a "hard and fast" mold into which people are fitted. The modern manager is inclined to organize to minimize central direction, with delegation to line executives, providing staff whose day-to-day operations, in cooperation with line executives, coordinate a continuing drive toward the organization's objectives. The staff officers, therefore, tend to become what could be described as parts of the president's brain, dealing with specific areas requiring certain skills. They do not necessarily direct operations, but watch them to be sure that the skills which they have themselves developed can be transmitted to line operations by persuasion rather than by direct authority. The elements of management requiring staff assignments are: 1. Planning, which, at staff level, is only a coordinating activity. Planning is done at all levels in the organization. 2. Engineering. 3. Finance. 4. Control. 5. Personnel and industrial relations, which set personnel policies, including salary plans and the means of handling relations with the unions. 6. Research, which, in a modern organization, is essential to progress and needs to be overseen at the top. 7. Legal staff to see that all operations of the company are provided with sound legal advice, and that the company's policies stay within the law.

Thiele Kaolin Co. has invested much time and money in achieving and maintaining its IS0 9002 certification. Through a regimen of process control and documentation, routine audits and a commitment to quality management, this kaolin producer is a competitive pigment supplier in a worldwide market. Background In 1987, the International Organization for Standards developed the ISO 9000 quality management system. This series of standards is used as a means to ensure customers that a quality management system is in place. Certification of a company does not mean that an individual product is of high quality. Rather, it demonstrates a supplier's ability to meet its customers' product and service needs. It also shows that a company has documented records to assure product consistency. The ISO 9000 system was begun in England during the early 1980s. During the mid-1970s, the British manufacturing industry was experiencing low quality. In an attempt to boost quality standards, the British government established the BS 5750 standards system. In 1987, BS 5750 was incorporated into ISO 9000. The ISO 9000 series consists of three levels of certification. ISO 9001 is the model for quality assurance in "design/development, production, installation and servicing." This standard applies to companies that rely on research and development to bring products that frequently change to market. ISO 9002 involves "production and installation" only. This standard is relevant to industries that produce a specific product according to specifications - either their own or their customer's. ISO 9003 is the model in "final inspection and test." This standard is the least detailed of the 9000 series. It is also the most applicable to companies that purchase, inspect or sort and resell. The quality system requirements for certification are outlined in the 18 elements of ISO 9002. These include: 4.1 - Management responsibility. 4.2 - Quality systems. 4.3 - Contract review. 4.4 - Design control. 4.5 - Document and data control. 4.6 - Purchasing. 4.7 - Control of customer-supplied product. 4.8 - Product identification and traceability. 4.9 - Process control. 4.10 - Inspection and testing. 4.11- Control of inspection, measuring and test equipment. 4.12 - Inspection and test status. 4.13 - Control of nonconforming product. 4.14 - Corrective and preventive action. 4.15 - Handling, storage, packaging, preservation and delivery. 4.16 - Control of quality records. 4.17 - Internal quality audits. 4.18 -Training. Continuous improvement, though implied in maintaining these requirements, could potentially be included in the quality system requirements in the next revision. Regional radiometric, magnetic and geologic data point to Copper Mountain as an area of general uranium favorability. Sub-regional radiometric and magnetic data direct interest to a specific section of an overthrust Precambrian granite. Detailed magnetic and resistivity surveys in this area show local targets of interest, one of which corresponds to Rocky Mountain Energy's North Canning deposit. On the basis of these data a second and previously untested target was drilled resulting in the intersection of uranium horizons similar to those at North Canning. This integrated geophysical approach can be used for uranium exploration in geologically similar areas.

INTRODUCTION The Northwestern University Rigid Block Model (NURBM) has been extended to explicitly model dilatant behavior of rock joints. By incorporating dilatancy, the resistance to shear displacement and slip, which previously was limited to simple Coulomb friction, along edge-to- edge contacts is now provided by contact roughness as well as frictional resistance. The explicit formulation is based on concepts presented by Plesha (1985) in which a plasticity-based phenomenological approach was used to model dilatant joint behavior. This approach has been modified to allow for joint closure upon reversal of shear deformation. After presenting a brief description of the new joint constitutive relationship, model behavior will be illustrated with two examples. The first involves a simple two-block model to simulate a cyclic direct shear test of a single joint. The second example involves simulation of a large cavern in a moderately jointed rock mass subjected to cyclic excitation. It will be shown that in- creasing joint roughness increases cavern stability by interlocking of adjacent blocks. JOINT CONSTITUTIVE RELATIONSHIP Within NURBM adjacent two-dimensional rigid blocks interact along their common edge-to-edge contact with contact forces transmitted at the contact midpoint. The contact constitutive relationship was originally restricted to a Coulomb friction yield criterion with no tensile stresses permitted along the smooth contact surfaces. The local coordinate system for any contact is described as shown in Figure 1 with the elastic stresses and displacements related by the linear- elastic constitutive law: [ ] The contact microstructure has been modeled as Patton-type saw-tooth surfaces such as shown in Figure 2. Sliding can be active along the right asperity with angle aR and length lR or along the left asperity with angle a and length lL. In general, aR and aL will difkr as will lR and lL but for purposes of this paper it has been assumed that these angles and lengths are identical. By a simple transformation, the microscopic asperity stresses can be expressed in terms of the macroscopic contact stresses [ ] If Coulomb friction is assumed along the asperity surfaces, the plastic slip condition will be [ ] where µ is the friction coefficient with the convention that compressive stress is negative. When F is negative, the behavior is elastic and when F is zero, slip can ensure. The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

This paper describes the development of the underground mining methods employed for narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were the chief underground mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The cut-and-fill methods and the benching methods are briefly reviewed in the paper. The benching methods and technologies have been continually evolving and one of the recent achievements is a multi-lift benching method. The multi-lift benching method is described in detail.
