The handling of radioactive waste deposits from factories that produce chemical fertilizers is a difficult problem, but has a great significance for soil quality and for the environment. The Romanian legislation has produced law and normative acts concordant with EU regulations for prevention and protection, and also for environmental contamination control with radionuclides. The soils and agricultural plants in the vicinity of phosphogypsum deposits are radioactively contaminated; the annual variability of the respective radioactivity values is demonstrated by annual records. Residual radioactivity monitoring determines the presence of radioactive ions in the soil and cultivated plants: wheat, maize, sunflower, as well as the spontaneous flora. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that ecological restoration works must be executed for degraded soils due to impacts of radioactive materials.

At the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division of National Lead Company a magnetite-ilmenite ore together with gabbro-anorthosite waste is mined from an open pit by shovels and trucks. The ore from the pits is trucked to ore stockpiles for blending ahead of the crusher and to free the mine from crusher delivery schedules. The ore stockpiles are blended to yield a 16.5 to 17.0 % TiO, crusher feed. This requires mining on an assay cut-off rather than a visual grade cut-off. Highly mineralized ore runs from 20 plus % TiO2 and 30 plus % Fe to 15 % TiO2 and 40 plus % Fe as the ratio of ilmenite to magnetite changes. There are three major ore types in the present pit with magnetite ratios varying from about one to one up to three times as much magnetite as ilmenite. Ilmenite and magnetite together liberate from gangue down to about 10 mesh and this is the basis of the magnetic cobbing. Below 10 mesh the ilmenite and magnetite start to separate and ore cobbing pulleys will not hold the ilmenite.

A prime objective of physical coal cleaning is the separation of raw coal into a clean coal product with the required low ash and pyritic sulfur content and a high ash refuse. The refuse should also contain a minimum amount of combustible matter. In order to be effective, cleaning processes require that the mineral matter in the feed, including pyrite, be largely discrete and free particles, liberated so that the particles are not attached or embedded in coal. Liberation of mineral matter from coal, particularly pyrite, was investigated by Bechtel as part of two fine coal cleaning research programs sponsored by the Department Of Energy (DOE), Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC). Two proof-of-concept (POC) plants, each with a capacity of 900 kg per hour, were installed and tested to evaluate production of ultra-clean coal using microbubble flotation and spherical agglomeration technologies. The plants were designed to produce clean coal with 2 percent ash and pyrite content lower than that achievable by conventional methods. Also, the quality targets were to be attained at energy recoveries above 80 percent. Bench-scale flotation and agglomeration tests indicated that it would be practical to grind the 6 mm top size feed coal to a mean particle size (050) of 10 micrometers in the POC test plant. In this part of the paper, the steps taken in the grinding circuit to maximize liberation of mineral matter are described.

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

The use of explosives in deep rock mining carries conventional blasting technology into a relatively new and unexplored realm. Although bill ions of pounds of explosives are used fairly routinely in mining, quarrying, and construction, almost all of these uses are surface blasting. Most of the in sib processes that are proposed for recovery of mineral or energy resources require the creation of high permeability to provide well defined flow paths in the resource bed. At present there is very little information on the fracturing produced by explosives deep in the earth, and the technology for using explosives in deep rock mining is just evolving. A qualitative understanding of the applicable mechanisms in deep rock fracture leads to some key parameters in the selection of explosives for deep rock mining. The selection and characterization process involves a careful analysis of the field environment and the establishment of tests to determine candidate explosives response to planned and accidental stimuli. The details of this selection and characterization process are given for a few candidate explosives. The use of explosives in deep rock mining must be considered as one of the possible tools for recovery of yet untrapped energy and mineral resources. A basic understanding of explosive deep rock fracture will allow optimum selection of explosive processes or other more appropriate methods for recovery of energy or minerals from a particular resource area. The results of some experimental studies are discussed.

It appears that the competition for increasingly scarce international mining investment capital will continue among developing countries. Indeed, there is growing evidence this competition may be on the verge of becoming destructive and cutthroat in nature. While this may be viewed as good news by short-term, speculative investors, it could have dangerous repercussions for international minerals producers over the long-term. It seems there has been a continuous parade of traveling foreign delegations touting the virtues of mineral investment in one country or another. These pitches all contain the politically correct key words, such as macro-economic reform, political reform, privatization, liberalization of laws governing mining and related investment incentives, reconciliation of ownership and right-to mine issues, and tax reform specially tailored for the minerals sector. Unfortunately, some of the information being trumpeted is based on plans, concepts or hopes for change rather than actual reforms approved by all necessary governmental entities. In yet other situations, the information provided consists of half-truths at best. Too often, potential minerals investors, faced with metals and minerals prices hovering near their recession lows and the need to offset old, high-cost operations, desperately want to believe all they hear about investment alternatives cast in a near-utopian setting. However, the virtues being proffered for mining investment abroad do not eliminate the need for careful scrutiny of subtle variations of traditional risks associated with foreign investment that can drastically affect the economic viability of mining projects.

A three-way research program, facilitated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Generic Institute funding, conducted by Hecla Mining Co., Spokane Research Center of the Bureau and the University of Idaho, shows that a cooperative effort to solve difficult mining problems should be considered. A five-year plan to change an overhead cut-and-fill mining system to a longwall undercut-and-fill involves more than twenty people from three organizations. The investigations will eventually include, ground stress, stress analysis, fill selection placement and compaction, ground and fill support, underhand mining and materials handling, access, ventilation, equipment selection and synthesis and operations and cost simulation.

The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone deposits, near Beatty, NV, have a combined drill-indicated reserve of 15.8 Mt (17.4 million st) of ore. Average grade is 3.5 g/t (0.103 oz per st) gold and 8.2 g/t (0.24 oz per st) silver. The deposits occur in Miocene volcanic rocks that underwent large-scale movement within a detachment-faulted terrane. The principal host to gold mineralization is a strongly welded rhyolitic tuff that experienced brittle deformation during plate movement. Open space fractures and breccia were filled with quartz, calcite, and adularia accompanied by lesser pyrite, gold, and acanthite. Gold occurs as micrometer-sized particles within and adjacent to the low-angle fault and along associated listric-normal and tear faults. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone are volcanic-hosted, detachment fault-related, epithermal quartz calcite stockwork gold deposits. Bullfrog's minable reserve is 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of ore grading 3.8 g/t (0.11 oz per st) of gold. At Montgomery-Shoshone, 2.7 Mt (3 million st) minable tons at 2.5 g/t (0.072 oz per st) are present. Preproduction stripping has begun at the Bullfrog ore body. A 7.7-kt/d (8500-stpd) carbon-in-pulp (CIP) mill is under construction. In 1990, Bond Gold expects to be producing about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz per year) of gold.

On December 2, 1942, a scientific team lead by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi first initiated and controlled a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This historic event occurring beneath the stands of the University of Chicago football stadium instantly created an entirely new and tremendously broad area of technology. Indeed, the event probably changed the course of world history and considering the curret energy shortage, it probably came none too soon. Following many technological breakthroughs in the ensuing years, this event led to the first full scale nuclear fueled electric generating plant. In December, 1957, the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant became operational and the United States had entered the era of the nuclear fueled electric generating station. Today, only fifteen years later, there are some thirty-five operating nuclear power plants in the United States with another 56 under construction and 116 on order. Still, we are only scratching the surface of this tremendous energy source. In 1970, less than one-percent of the total electric generating capacity in the United States was nuclear fueled. By 1985, it is projected that 45% of our generating capacity will result from nuclear power plants. These projections are based upoa statistics of six months to a year ago and considering the current energy shortage and recent attempts by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAEC) to speed the licensing process and encourage standardized plants, the contribution of nuclear power to our total generating capacity may be even greater. In summary, it is obvious that nuclear power is now, and will continue, playing an important role in our future. Those factions of government, industry and the professional community charged with fully developing this tremendous energy source must deal with it rationally, logically and expediently. The various environmental considerations in nuclear plant siting play an important role in the overall plan.

In the USA many highway tunnels were built during the 1930s through 1960s. This indicates that these tunnels have exceeded their intended design service life. Based on the initial tunnel inventory conducted jointly by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), more than 526 highway tunnels have been identified in the USA. For understanding the condition of the tunnels and risks associated with deteriorating conditions, comprehensive condition assessments are necessary to mitigate risk and remediate works as required. Monitoring the condition and rate of deterioration of tunnels is vital for timely tunnel maintenance and rehabilitation to avoid sudden tunnel collapse. This session will explain the necessary steps for tunnel inspection and review some of the state of the practice information on tunnel inspection techniques.

Minerals for electronic and optical uses divide easily into two sections: 1) quartz and 2) minerals other than quartz. QUARTZ The properties of quartz crystal that make it useful for radio communications were discovered in 1918. Since that time, an in¬dustry for the mining and processing of natural quartz crystal has grown, matured, and been almost entirely replaced by new tech¬nology. The new technology still involves quartz crystal, but ma¬terial that is grown rather than mined. An economic summary of the commercial growing of quartz crystals has a place in a handbook directed to the mineral engi¬neering industry because quartz crystals have long been an impor¬tant commercial mineral, and the raw material for cultured quartz - ¬that is to say, quartz crystals grown through the ingenuity of man - is still natural quartz. Nearly all the natural crystals that have been used for elec¬tronics and optics came from Brazil. The larger pieces which met rigorous standards of quality were used for electronic and, to a lesser extent, optical components. Smaller pieces and fragments were used for vitreous silica. The need for high quality material in quantity led to US government sponsored research and exploration programs in the 1940s. No deposits meeting the very rigid requirements for electronic-grade quartz were found, but other projects resulted in the development of a process for the factory growth of beautiful crystals of prescribed shape, size, and quality. Domestic deposits of appropriate quality were identified to use as raw materials for the quartz culturing process. The development of the cultured quartz crystal illustrates the success that technology can have in adapting a product of the mine to increasingly sophisticated uses. A remarkable achievement per¬haps, but foreshadowed by experiments by Giorgio Spezia (1908), an Italian geologist studying the relative effects of temperature and alkaline environment on the solubility of quartz. Modem radio equipment is most often controlled as to fre¬quency by the presence in the circuit of a separately added crystal¬ - the 1918 discovery responsible for the existence and growth of the quartz industry. The crystal is quartz, but this component is a carefully oriented and prepared slice from a crystal, but not a crystal as recognized by a rock hound or seen in a museum. How quartz operates to control frequencies is not a proper subject for a handbook on industrial minerals, and references should be consulted (Cady, 1964, Mason, 1964). Quartz belongs to a class of materials called dielectrics: those that do not conduct an electric current but permit electric fields to exist and act across them. Quartz shows the piezoelectric effect, which means that when a quartz plate is mechanically deformed against its natural stiffness, one of its surfaces becomes negatively charged, the other positively charged. When the plate is released quickly from the stress, the charges disappear as the plate regains its original shape, but because of mechanical momentum the plate deforms in the opposite direction (to a lesser amount) and the surfaces correspondingly become charged in the opposite direction. By thinly coating the two surfaces with metal and attaching flexible wires, these charges can be brought into an electronic circuit. If the surfaces are suddenly electrically charged by movement of current through the wires, the converse piezoelectric effect occurs and the plate deforms. Carry the thought further and it is realized that an alternating current flowing through the wires responds to the mechanical oscillation. By controlling the thickness of the plate, its mechanical vibration frequency can be varied through a wide range. One type of quartz plate, the AT-cut, has a precisely defined orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the crystal and vibrates on a microscopic scale much as a book would deform when placed flat on a table and the top cover moved parallel back and forth with the hand. At least 17 other orientations have been studied, some of which have preferred uses in various applications (Cady, 1964). The quartz crystal industry is composed of three main segments (excluding fused quartz and quartz used for optical purposes): 1. Natural electronic-grade quartz crystals. Mined quartz suitable for fabrication into piezoelectric units. Zlobik (1981a) esti¬mated the waste to ore ratio at 1:1000 to 1000 000, depending upon the deposit. 2. Lasca. Mined quartz usable as feedstock in the production of cultured quartz. Approximately 0.63 kg of lasca are required to produce 0.45 kg of cultured quartz. 3. Cultured quartz. Cultured quartz is produced from lasca feed¬stock in a process of crystal growth in an autoclave under conditions of heat, pressure, and time. It is estimated that 0.45 kg of cultured quartz is equivalent to 1.4 to 4.5 kg of natural quartz crystal in yield of commercial quartz suitable for slicing into piezoelectric units. Anglo-Rouyn Mines Limited, managed by Rio Algom Mines Limited is a subsidiary of the British-based Rio Tinto-Zinc Corporation Limited. This mining operation is situated in Northern Saskatchewan, 250 miles north of Saskatoon and represents the first base-metal mine of any importance served by this relatively new mining province. The outcrop of Copper-bearing Chalcopyrite was first discovered by prospectors in 1915, but was not mined until 1965 due to the absence of any form of road into the area prior to this latter date. The mine, mill and concentrator were designed to handle 900 tons per day of comparatively hard, abrasive ore containing chalcopyrite with traces of gold and silver. The flow sheet, Figure 1, is, we believe, elementary, designed with low cost in mind and utilises much old equipment from closed¬-down mines. Due to some difficulty in attaining the designed grinding capacity, changes were made in the crusher circuit. This, unfortunately, lowered the crushing rate too much. A series of changes have taken place to re-establish the original crusher capacity of better than 100 tons per hour. In the quest for a better recovery certain modifications have been tested in the concentrator circuit. These steps are discussed in minor detail.

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. "Methane-air mixtures form explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground longwall coal mine gob ventilation systems. Such EGZs have caused a number of fatal mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine, where 29 miners lost their lives. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict EGZ locations. In this paper, a model of a bleeder-ventilated gob system includes two adjacent panels, an active longwall and a mined-out gob. Boundary conditions for the simulations match statutory ventilation conditions for methane concentrations and air flow rates at common measurement points throughout the mine. The modeling results predict the persistence of EGZs in the gob that may compromise the effectiveness of the bleeder ventilation system. INTRODUCTION Mine operators must maintain statutory air flow and air quality requirements at various locations throughout the mine ventilation network. U.S. regulations generally require mine operators to establish bleeder ventilation systems surrounding longwall gob areas (30 CFR §75.334.) Gilmore et al. (2015) documented that explosive gas zones (EGZs) exist within bleeder-ventilated gobs and may extend into the bleeder entries that must be examined weekly, presenting an immediate fire and explosion hazard to mine examiners. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under contract 200-2009-31409, researchers at Colorado School of Mines have developed a tool for modeling gob air quality using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This CFD model is capable of examining a wide range of longwall mine ventilation systems. Marts et al. (2014a, 2015) studied progressively sealed gobs with U-type ventilation and using a back return. Saki et al. (2015) examined the impact of gob ventilation boreholes and face air quantity effects on tailgate methane concentrations. Gilmore et al. (2014) modeled bleeder-ventilated gobs and Gilmore et al. (2015) studied the effects of bleeder regulator settings on EGZ volume and locations in the gob. CFD studies for progressively sealed gobs were generally carried out using 5000 ft (1500 m) panels because the gob atmosphere remains largely unchanged from about 500 m (1,500 ft) inby the face. A modular meshing methodology (Gilmore, 2015) permitted researchers to extend bleeder models to 10,000 ft (3050 m) to include the full extent of bleeder entries. This paper further expands the bleeder CFD model to study the gob atmospheres of two adjacent longwall panels, each 10,200 ft (3100 m) in length, with the active face located 6,700 ft (2040 m) from the startup room."

As in other mineral deposits, variation in bitumen saturation, thickness of ore and discard occurs throughout Alberta's Athabasca Oil Sands deposit. The economic stripping ratio developed here to determine surface mineable limits takes into account capital and operating costs, crude oil prices, quality of ore, thickness of overburden, and thickness of inter-ore waste. The surface mining systems employed to remove bituminous sands (oil sands) from huge mines at depths of 60-70m use gigantic draglines, bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers, and large mobile equipment.

The paper presents a description of the procedures that were used to generate a ventilation criterion based on measurements of ambient mine air exhaust pollutant gases and ventilation airflow quantities. Today's economics dictate that a ventilation requirement be based on actual operating conditions. This will assure optimum economics and a safe working environment at the same time. The paper presents a methodology by which a ventilation requirement is based on the average maximum expected concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) that equipment operators in one of our Southeast Missouri mines will be subjected to. A graph has been generated whereby the expected maximum levels of NO, NO2, CO and CO2 are plotted against the ventilation quantity of a mine stope.

The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

To start my talk, I thought it might be helpful for us to define the term "aggregate", so I went to the dictionary. Webster has several listings under "aggregate", and I found the following: "1. A mass or body of units or parts somewhat loosely associated with one another." Well, I didn't like that term "loosely" so I read on. "2. Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we've already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn't exist without concrete. And you can't have concrete without aggregates,
